By the combination of graphene oxide with multiple "plug-ins", the composite membranes are fabricated for nanofiltration with high water permeance (82 L m−2h−1 bar−1) and ideal rejection rate (99.98%). The membranes based on graphene oxide (GO) have shown vast perspectives in nanofiltration, while the swelling of GO membranes in water environment poses a critical challenge for practical applications. In this study, we report the simple fabrication of stable GO membranes in water environment through intercalating multiple "plug-ins": the filter of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and the crosslinker of trimesoyl chloride (TMC), which can significantly enhance sieving effect and stability of membranes, and efficiently remove dyes and salts. The β-CD possess the cavity range of 6.0–6.5 Å which is larger than the diameter of water molecules, which can introduce extra water passage and hinder the permeation of dye molecules. In addition, the remaining hydroxyl groups on the membrane surface enhance the hydrophilicity, benefiting to enhance water permeance. At the same time, TMC cross-links β-CD and GO nanosheets to reinforce the membrane. The water permeance of the GO/β-CD/TMC membrane reaches 82 L m−2h−1 bar−1, and the dye rejection (crystal violet) is 99.98%. Therefore, GO membranes prepared by the multiple "plug-ins" incorporation strategy are promising candidates for the nanofiltration process to remove dyes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ZnO nanorod arrays with peculiar morphologies were synthesized on (111)-oriented Si substrate and glass via a vapor phase growth. The morphology of the individual nanorod can be flat-headed bottle-like, and needle-like, which depends on the deposition positions relative to the source materials in the presence of a controlling element Se. In addition, the arrays of all the three morphologies exhibit good alignment and high coverage. This fabrication technique can be also used to direct the controllable growth of other nanomaterials with similar morphologies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

[Display omitted] • New 3D bulk MOF and 2D ultrathin MOF nanosheets are synthesized. • The planar micro-supercapacitors with the interdigital microelectrodes are achieved based on MOF bulk and MOF nanosheets. • The MOF-nanosheets for micro-supercapacitors displays enhanced performance than MOF bulk. Due to the advantages of ultrahigh power density, long lifespan and easy integration with wearable and microscale electronics, micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) have attracted great interest in recent years. However, new high-performance electrode materials for such micro-electrochemical energy storage devices require deep excavation. Herein, we precisely synthesized a new 3D bulk MOF and new 2D ultrathin MOF nanosheets with a thickness of less than 10 nm, and utilized them as high-capacitance microelectrode materials for sophisticated all-solid-state MSC devices respectively. Notably, the MSCs based on MOF nanosheets displayed a high areal capacitance of 28.3 mF·cm−2, and a volumetric capacitance of 15.7 F·cm−3 at 0.2 mA·cm−2. Especially, our MSCs exhibited remarkable energy density of 8.7 mWh·cm−3 at a power density of 110.3 mW·cm−3, and excellent cycling lifespans with retention of 96.0% after 10,000 cycles, and all performances are better than the MSCs based on MOF bulks. This work provides a new way to further explore the inherent advantages of MOFs and stimulates the synthesis of advanced MOFs materials for application in microscale energy storage.
