Estimation of the spatial and temporal characteristics of key water balance components in data scarce regions is a large challenge worldwide. This paper presents the derivation of the 30-year surface water balance components (rainfall, temperature, potential and actual evapotranspiration ( ET p and ET a ) runoff). Monthly rainfall and mean temperature from 28 synoptic stations in Malawi during 1971–2000, together with soil moisture capacity extracted from the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme Data Information Services (IGBP-DIS) Global Gridded Surfaces of Selected Soil Characteristics database at 0.5° × 0.5° grid resolution were used as model input. Ordinary Kriging was applied to examine the spatial distribution of the components using a 0.5° × 0.5° grid resolution. Temporal trends were investigated using the Mann–Kendall test at α = 0.05 significance level. The results showed: (1) an area of high rainfall, ET a and runoff areas located in the south east and north east highlands and decreasing westwards. Temperature and ET p were highest in the lower Shire River valley and along Lake Malawi; (2) Mann–Kendall trends suggested statistically significant positive trends in mean annual temperature and ET p and declines in annual rainfall, ET a and runoff, though their trends were not statistically significant. The contrasting trends ET p and ET a are a manifestation of the complementary relationship. The decline in rainfall coupled with temperature increase suggests that Malawi became more water-limited during 1971–2000. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: In this study a rigorous evaluation and comparison of the difference in water balance simulations resulted from using different downscaling techniques, GCMs and hydrological models is performed in upper Hanjiang basin in China. The study consists of the following steps: (1) the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data for the period 1961–2000 are used to calibrate and validate the statistical downscaling techniques, i.e. SSVM (Smooth Support Vector Machine) and SDSM (Statistical Downscaling Model); (2) the A2 emission scenarios from CGCM3 and HadCM3 for the same period are used as input to the statistical downscaling models; and (3) the downscaled local scale climate scenarios are then used as the input to the Xin-anjiang and HBV hydrological models. The results show that: (1) for the same GCM, the simulated runoffs vary greatly when using rainfall provided by different statistical downscaling techniques as the input to the hydrological models; (2) although most widely used statistics in the literature for evaluation of statistical downscaling methods show SDSM has better performance than SSVM in downscaling rainfall except the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSC) and root mean square error-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR), the runoff simulation efficiency driven by SDSM rainfall is far lower than by SSVM; and (3) by comparing different statistics in rainfall and runoff simulation, it can be concluded that NSC and RSR between simulated and observed rainfall can be used as key statistics to evaluate the statistical downscaling models’ performance when downscaled precipitation scenarios are used as input for hydrological models. Abstract: Predicting hydrological variables in ungauged catchments has been singled out as one of the major issues in the hydrological sciences. In this study, the conceptual rainfall-runoff model, HBV, was applied to Dongjiang basin and its 13 sub-basins for the purposes of examining the applicability of this well-known model in south China and exploring the possibility of transferring the calibrated parameter values to ungauged basins. For testing the applicability of the model in gauged basins, the model was calibrated for a period of 1978–1983 and validated for a period of 1984–1988. For testing the transferability of parameter values to ungauged basins, two parameter regionalization methods – proxy-basins and global mean – were investigated. The results showed that: 1) the HBV model worked well in the Dongjiang basin with the average indexes of agreement (D) and coefficient of efficiency (ME), respectively, equal to 0.79 and 0.82 in the calibration period, and 0.76 and 0.78 in the validation period; 2) transferring the parameter values from basins that passed the cross-basin test with higher ME values to the hypothetical ungauged catchments produced acceptable results with an average ME value equals to 0.72; 3) compared with the proxy-basin method of parameter estimation, the model produced equally good results for the global mean method with an average ME value equals to 0.74 when using simple arithmetic mean values. Neither the area weighted mean method nor the Thiessen polygon method produced regional parameter values could markedly improve the accuracy of modeling results. It was concluded that both regionalization methods could effectively estimate parameters for ungauged catchments in the Dongjiang basin, and similar model performances were obtained. Abstract Recently, the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) products with high spatial (0.1° × 0.1°) and temporal (half-hourly) resolution have become operationally available. It is of crucial importance to comprehensively evaluate these new products before they are applied extensively. This study focuses on statistical and hydrological evaluations of the latest IMERG (Version 05) products: the near-real-time “Early” run and “Late” run IMERG products (IMERG-E and IMERG-L, respectively), and the post-real-time “Final” run IMERG product (IMERG-F) over the mid-latitude humid Mishui basin in South China during 2014–2015, in comparison with their predecessors, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) products (3B42RT and 3B42V7). The post-real-time IMERG-F presents the best performance among the five satellite precipitation products (SPPs), with the highest daily correlation coefficient (CC) of 0.85 and the lowest daily root-mean square error of 5.58 mm at the basin scale. The near-real-time IMERG-E and IMERG-L demonstrate comparable performance with 3B42V7. In addition, the Taylor diagrams visually demonstrate that the IMERG products are better than the 3B42 products. For hydrological simulations under scenario I (model calibration based on rain gauge observations), the post-real-time IMERG-F performs obviously better than the 3B42V7 does, with a relatively high CC of 0.81, a good Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient of 0.63, and an acceptable relative bias of −3.98%. Both the IMERG-E and IMERG-L demonstrate a better performance than the 3B42RT does. For scenario II (model recalibration based on each satellite dataset), the hydrological performances of both the IMERG and 3B42 products are improved. The IMERG-E, especially, demonstrates streamflow simulation performance comparable to that of the 3B42V7, both for the whole simulation period and flood season, indicating the great potential of the latest near-real-time IMERG-E product for flood simulation and prediction. Overall, this systematic evaluation highlights that the latest IMERG products have desirable hydrological utility in the study region. This study will provide useful guidelines for hydrological applications of the new generation SPPs, as well as IMERG algorithm development. Most lumped hydrological models use areal average precipitation data as model input. Though weather-radar-based and satellite-based precipitation estimation methods have been proposed in recent years, the rain gauge is still the most widely used precipitation-measuring tool. Optimal selection of rain gauge number and location will improve the accuracy of areal average precipitation estimations with minimum cost. In this study, the impacts of rain gauge density and distribution on lumped hydrological modelling uncertainty with different catchment sizes are analysed. To this end, the performances of a lumped hydrological model, the Xinanjiang model, in a densely gauged river basin, the Xiangjiang River basin, and its sub-basins under different gauge density and distribution are compared. First, seven levels of rain gauge density are defined. For each density level, several samples of different rain gauge distributions are randomly selected. Then, the areal average precipitation of each sample is estimated and used as input to the Xinanjiang model. Finally, the model is calibrated using the shuffled complex evolution (SCE-UA) algorithm, and model uncertainty is evaluated via the Bayesian method. The results show that 1) imperfect precipitation inputs measured by a sparse and irregular rain gauge network will lead to substantial uncertainty in model parameter estimation and flood simulation; 2) the impacts of imperfect precipitation estimates on model efficiency can be reduced to some extent through the adjustment of model parameters; 3) modelling uncertainty is reduced by increasing the rain gauge density or optimizing the rain gauge distribution pattern; and 4) the improvement in lumped model efficiency is no longer significant when the rain gauge density exceeds a certain threshold, but a further increase in rain gauge density will reduce model parameter uncertainty and the width of the runoff confidence interval. • Soil moisture dynamics were compared between four typical types of land use and land cover in a humid mountainous watershed. • The bamboo forest had the largest variability in soil moisture content. • The cumulative infiltration increased but the infiltration rate decreased with the rainfall grade. • The runoff coefficient during representative rainfall events varied with the LULC. Identifying soil moisture dynamics is critical for understanding watershed hydrological processes. Soil moisture responses to rainfall vary with land use and land covers (LULCs) and thus influence rainfall-runoff processes, however, the knowledge about how different LULCs affect such processes was less revealed, especially in humid areas. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of soil moisture content (SMC) and rainfall-related soil moisture responses under four typical LULCs, i.e., waxberry forest, farmland, sloping farmland, and bamboo forest, based on in-situ observations in a humid mountainous watershed. We then used the HYDRUS-1D model to analyze the patterns of the rainfall-infiltration processes and quantified corresponding runoff generation to reveal the partitioning between infiltration and runoff at the event scale. We found significant differences of the average SMC at multiple depths for four LULCs. The deep soil (80 cm) had the largest SMC for the waxberry forest, farmland, and sloping farmland, while the surface soil (10 cm) was the wettest soil layer for the bamboo forest. During the representative rainstorms, although soil moisture responses exhibited depth gradients, the earlier responses at some deep layers indicated the occurrence of preferential flow. Generally, the cumulative infiltration increased while the infiltration rate decreased with the rainfall grade. Farmland and bamboo forest showed the most and the least infiltration, respectively. These results suggested that both the rainfall properties and LULCs had a strong impact on the soil moisture responses. Meanwhile, the estimated average runoff coefficients of four typical LULCs increased with rainfall grade, and the sloping farmland generated the most runoff during the representative rainfall events. Our findings provide new insights into soil moisture dynamics and infiltration regimes under different LULCs in humid areas, which can contribute to hydrological modeling at the field-scale and regional water resource management. Summary: Spatial rainfall is a key input to distributed hydrological models, and its precisions heavily affect the accuracy of stream flow predictions from a hydrological model. Traditional interpolation techniques which obtain the spatial rainfall distribution from rain gauge data have some limitations caused by data scarcity and bad quality, especially in developing countries or remote locations. Satellite-based precipitation products are expected to offer an alternative to ground-based rainfall estimates in the present and the foreseeable future. For this purpose, the quality and usefulness of satellite-based precipitation products need to be evaluated. The present study compares the difference of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rainfall with rain gauges data at different time scales and evaluates the usefulness of the TRMM rainfall for hydrological processes simulation and water balance analysis at the Xinjiang catchment, located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China. The results show at daily time step TRMM rainfall data are better at determining rain occurrence and mean values than at determining the rainfall extremes, and larger difference exists for the maximal daily and maximal 5-day rainfalls. At monthly time scale, good linear relationships between TRMM rainfall and rain gauges rainfall data are received with the determination coefficients (R 2) varying between 0.81 and 0.89 for the individual stations and 0.88 for areal average rainfall data, respectively. But the slope of regression line ranges between 0.74 for Yingtan and 0.94 for Yushan, indicating that the TRMM satellite is inclined to underestimate the monthly rainfall in this area. The simulation of daily hydrological processes shows that the Water Flow Model for Lake Catchment (WATLAC) model using conventional rain gauge data produces an overall good fit, but the simulation results using TRMM rainfall data are discontented. The evaluation results imply that the TRMM rainfall data are unsuited for daily stream flow simulation in this study area with desired precisions. However, good performance can be received using TRMM rainfall data for monthly stream flow simulations. The comparison of the simulated annual water balance components shows that the different rainfall data sources can change the volume value and proportion of water balance components to some extent, but it generally meets the need of practical use. Hydrological impact assessments are increasingly performed at fine spatial and temporal resolutions in order to resolve local-scale changes under a future climate. Apart from the uncertainty represented by different climate models, emission scenarios and post-processing methods, the local-scale internal variability of the climate can be a major source of uncertainty for hydrological projections. To assess the latter at the catchment scale, this paper presents a methodology which is particularly suitable for spatially distributed hydrological models. An ensemble of daily precipitation and daily mean temperature realizations on a high-resolution grid is simulated from stochastic weather generators (WGs) trained on historical data and equipped with climate change information obtained from a regional climate model. Based on the resulting simulated daily runoff data, the significance of changes in the runoff regime is assessed using a statistical hypothesis test, and the variability contributed by the two input variables is quantified using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). As a proof of concept, simulations on a 1-km grid over a period of 19 years are carried out for nine catchments in central Norway. Significant changes in runoff regimes are found, indicating that the trends introduced in the WGs are not overwhelmed by the local-scale internal variability. Variability in the runoff simulations varies substantially throughout the year; it is highest in periods with potential snowmelt and lowest during winter. Temperature is the dominant source of variability in the colder months (November–March) due to its influence on rainfall and snowmelt. High variability in May–June is contributed comparably by both temperature and precipitation. In summer and early autumn the runoff variability is precipitation dominated. The results are in line with findings in the literature where the runoff variability is driven by the large-scale internal climate variability. Sediment load is a critical issue in hydrologic process analysis and river basin management. Many studies have analyzed the impacts of rainfall or reservoir separately on the downstream sediment load; however, few researches investigated the coupled effect of rainfall and reservoir on sediment load change. In this study, a rainfall-augmented sediment trapping index (RSTI) that combines the impacts of effective rainfall and reservoir sediment trapping capacity was developed to attribute the sediment load change in the Wujiang River Basin (WRB) during the period of 1952–2017. Eight linear or nonlinear regression models were set up to investigate how to best utilize the proposed RSTI to reveal the coupled effect of rainfall and reservoir on the downstream sediment load of WRB. It is found that observed sediment load has a large decrease after 1984 when the Wujiangdu Reservoir was put into full operation while rainfall had only a slight change in the same period. The nonlinear regression model with RSTI as an explanatory variable (NSE = 0.837) has the best performance in simulating the observed sediment load series.
