Long-standing problems in the geological evolution of the Tibetan–Himalayan orogen include where the India–Asia convergence was accommodated and how the plateau grew. To clarify these problems, we review the deformations and their role in the plateau's growth. Our results show that ~ 1630 km of shortening occurred across the Tibetan–Himalayan orogen since ~ 55 Ma, with more than ~ 1400 km accommodated by large-scale thrust belts. These thrust belts display an outward expansion from central Tibet and couple with the surficial uplift. The development of the Tibetan plateau involved three significant steps: Primitive plateau (~ 90–55 Ma), Proto-plateau (~ 55–40 Ma), and Neoteric plateau (~ 40–0 Ma). Several processes have collaborated to produce the Proto-plateau, including the pre-existing Primitive plateau, the India–Asia collision, and subductions of Greater India and Songpan–Ganzi beneath the Lhasa–Qiangtang terrane. Since ~ 40 Ma, the Proto-plateau, which was dominated by a topographic gradient, lower crustal flow and continuous India–Asia convergence, experienced three periods of rapid outward growth (~ 40–23, ~ 23–10, and ~ 10–0 Ma) in general. The N–S trending rifts were caused by the eastward growth of the plateau dominated by thrusting and crust flow in central Tibet, while they were the results of intense N–S shortening in Himalaya. Abstract: Lithostratigraphic studies of the Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous sedimentary successions exposed in the Tingri–Gyangze area, south-eastern Tibet resulted in the establishment of a revised stratigraphic framework. A major crustal fault separates the southern Tibetan sedimentary successions into a Southern Zone and a Northern Zone. The Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous strata of the Southern Zone are subdivided into the Menkadun Formation (Oxfordian, Kimmeridgian, up to lower Upper Tithonian), the Gucuo Formation (Upper Tithonian to Lower Albian) and the overlying Dongshan Formation (Upper Albian). The Gucuo Formation is further subdivided into a quartz arenite unit, which is overlain by a shale unit, in turn overlain by a volcaniclastic sandstone unit. The youngest cluster of detrital zircon absolute age data (127.7±1.8Ma) from the lower part of the volcaniclastic unit of the Gucuo Formation place the volcanic event before the Late Barremian. In the Northern Zone, the Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous strata have been subdivided into four formations: the Zhera Formation (Upper Jurassic), the Weimei Formation (Tithonian), the Rilang Formation (?Berriasian) and the Gyabula Formation (? post-Valanginian). The appearance of silica cemented quartz arenites in both the quartz arenite unit of the Gucuo Formation and the Weimei Formation in the uppermost Jurassic is considered to provide strong evidence for an eustatic sea level drop affecting the northern margin of Greater India. In contrast the appearance of volcaniclastic sandstones in the Gucuo and Rilang formations are interpreted to represent a rift related volcanic event. The Menkadun–Zhera formations, the quartz arenite unit of the Gucuo Formation–Weimei Formation, the volcaniclastic sandstone unit–Rilang Formation in south-eastern Tibet are lithologically similar and broadly correlative with the Spiti Shale, Takh and Pingdon La formations in Zanskar (India), and Spiti Shale, Dangardzong, Kagbeni and Dzong formations in the Thakkhola area (Nepal). The onset of quartzose and subsequently volcaniclastic deposition becomes progressively younger westward, from the Gucuo region toward Zanskar. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The orientation and distribution of the northern Indian passive continental margin basin during different epochs constrained the geometric characteristics of the hyperextended northern Indian edge ("Greater India"). Traditional paleogeographic reconstructions envisage the Late Triassic northern Indian passive continental margin as E/W-trending, whereas paleomagnetic data support an ~55° counterclockwise rotation during northward drifting. This case study of Upper Triassic units from the northern Indian margin, based on facies analysis, sandstone petrography, heavy mineral assemblages, U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology, and stratigraphic correlation from the Zanskar Range to southern Tibet, provides new constraints and suggests that the northern Indian passive continental margin might have been N/S-trending in the Late Triassic. Given the dominance of quartz sandstones with zircon, tourmaline and rutile—indicating a provenance from continental blocks and the recycling of older quartz-rich sandstones—and detrital zircon age spectra characterized by a Neoproterozoic detrital zircon U-Pb age peak (921 ± 13 Ma), the Upper Triassic sandstones widespread along the Tethyan Himalayas may have been partly derived from the Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt in eastern India and the Rayner Orogen in eastern Antarctica. The Upper Triassic Quartzite Series comprises feldspatho-quartzose to pure quartzose sandstones with intercalated bioclastic oosparites deposited in backshore, foreshore and shoreface coastal environments. Without considering the subsequent counterclockwise rotation of India, the consistent pattern of the Upper Triassic bidirectional E-W paleocurrent observed throughout the Himalaya suggests that the paleoshoreline was striking near N-S, approximately perpendicular to the regional orientation of the northern Indian margin. Progressive eastward thickening of the sandstone layers and eastward younging of the Quartzite Series suggest diachronous sedimentation. Such stratal patterns and the strike of the Late Triassic paleoshoreline were attributed to the Neo-Tethys transgression from the Zanskar Range to southern Tibet.
