Abstract: This paper concerns the evolution during the Holocene of the floodplain of the Rhone River in the Basses Terres basin, 70km northeast of Lyon. Geomorphological mapping of a number of paleochannels has been carried out, using topographic maps, aerial photos, and landform surveys, and mechanical cores have been taken that enable the reconstruction of several stratigraphies in cross section. The chronology of fluvial deposits relies mainly on the radiocarbon dating of organic materials collected from the abandoned fluvial fills. Paleochannel infillings were also used to record fluvial style changes and floodplain aggradation rates. The main results show that the region has a mountainous piedmont plain controlled by local factors (inherited from glacial times) that have led to the atypical predominance of a meandering river pattern controlling the evolution of the floodplain in the Basses Terres area during the Holocene. A major avulsion of the Rhone, when it switched to its present-day northern course around 2700–2600cal. BP, strongly influenced the evolution of the Holocene floodplain, causing a sharp decrease in the aggradation of the abandoned section. In addition, four major occurrences of strong and increased sediment discharge took place around 10,000–7500, 3000–2700, 2400/1500–1000, and 230–50cal. BP. Two of these (ca. 3000–2700 and 230–50cal. BP) are correlated to a braided pattern and represent temporary fluvial metamorphoses of the Rhone. The infilling rates of several paleochannels also reveal periods of strong sediment deposition around 5500–5250, 3500–3200, 1400–1200, and 600–400cal. BP, consistent with previous regional paleohydrological phases as well as new ones. These phases are synchronous with the hydrosedimentary variations identified on a regional scale in the Rhone catchment area and the northern Alps. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study presents the upstream–downstream complexity of the Rhone, which earlier was a braided river. The fluvial patterns of the Rhône ca. 1860–70 are discussed, i.e. at the end of the Little Ice Age, which was also the beginning of the period of river dredging for improving navigation in the channel (1840–1930) and before the development of a chain of hydroelectric dams (1892–1986) on the river. Flowing across Switzerland and France to the Camargue delta on the Mediterranean, the Rhône drains the western part of the Alps in Europe. Befitting a large river flowing from the mountains, the Rhône was braided along most of its course, due to large quantities of coarse sediments formerly contributed by tributaries from the Alps, Jura Mountains, and Massif Central. The paper begins with a summary of palaeo-environmental studies on the Rhône, which show that the river experienced several events of fluvial metamorphosis during the Holocene. The reaches, which were braided during the late 19th century, alternated between meandering and braided patterns during this period due to the high sensitivity of the channel pattern to external variables such as changing water and sediment discharges. A discussion on the methods used to describe different aspects of the braided pattern of the Rhône from 1860 to 1870, using large-scale maps follows. Discrete reaches on the river are identified using slope, downstream variations of discharge, and stream power. These can be attributed to three factors: the tributaries (large supplies of bed load are brought by the Arve, the Ain, the Drôme, the Ardèche and the Durance rivers), Quaternary tectonics, and the along-channel distance from tributary confluences. Finally, the study assesses the pre-modern conditions of the Rhône for restoring selected reaches on the modern river. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Summary: This paper presents a combined downscaling and disaggregation weather generator developed for multisite generation of hourly precipitation and temperature time series over complex terrain. Daily regional weather variables are first generated from Generalized Linear Models based on daily atmospheric circulation indices from NCEP reanalysis. They are then disaggregated to the required spatial and temporal scales using a K-nearest neighbour approach. The weather generator is applied to the Upper Rhone River basin in the Swiss Alps. It successfully reproduces standard statistics for temperature as well as total and liquid precipitation at the temporal and spatial resolutions required for hydrological modelling of the system (3h, 100km2) and at lower resolutions down to those relevant at the river basin scale (3days, ∼5500km2). In addition, it reproduces the monthly distributions of the 1°C isotherm elevation and of maximum precipitation amounts while preserving the spatial heterogeneity of weather variables and their spatial and temporal correlations. The weather generator can also be used to produce weather scenarios for the studied basin in a future climate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
