As part of the European-funded IMPROVE LIFE project work programme experiments were performed in the Barcelona Metro system with the objective of better understanding the relationship between ventilation and air quality. The results demonstrate that tunnel ventilation plays an extremely important role in maintaining cleaner air and is capable of reducing both inhalable particulate matter (PM) mass and particle number concentration (> 0.3 μm) on platforms by over 50%, even in the presence of full-length platform screen doors. Another key influence on platform air quality is the chosen combination of fan power and forced air flow direction (impulsion of outdoor ambient air or extraction of subway indoor air): cleaner platform air was achieved using platform impulsion at higher power settings designed to ameliorate high summer temperatures underground. Reversing platform air flow from impulsion to extraction produced an immediate deterioration in PM air quality, most notably if the higher power setting was maintained, when an especially marked increase in numbers of very fine (submicron) particles was observed and attributed to tunnel air being drawn into the platform. At night, in the absence of trains and platform ventilation, platform air quality improves when tunnel fans are working at reduced power, whatever the flow direction (impulsion/extraction). Inside the air conditioned Barcelona Metro trains (where underground commuters spend most of their time) air quality is markedly better than on the platform, and unchanged A/C filters were observed capable of maintaining a similar reduction in inside train PM for at least three months. The TSI DustTrak Aerosol Monitor is a portable real-time instrument widely used for particulate matter (PM) mass concentrations monitoring. The aim of this work is to report on issues that have arisen from the use of the latest generation models DustTrak DRX (8533 and 8534) in the BREATHE, UPTECH and IMPROVE projects that can compromise data quality. The main issue we encountered was the occurrence of sudden artefact jumps in PM concentration, which can involve an increase from a few to some hundreds of μg·m − 3 . These artefact jumps can sometimes be easily recognised (“obvious jump”), while others can be difficult to identify because the difference in the concentrations before and after the jump might be just few μg·m − 3 (“possible jump”) or because the jump is sustained over the whole monitoring period and only detectable if PM concentrations are simultaneously measured by other instruments (“hidden jump”). Moreover, in areas of relatively low PM levels, the unit reported concentration of 0 μg·m − 3 for ambient PM concentration or even negative concentration values which may seriously compromise the dataset. These data suggest issues with the detection of low PM concentrations, which could be due to an incorrect instrument offset or the factory calibration setting being inadequate for these PM concentrations. The upward and downward artefact jumps were not related to especially dusty or clean conditions, since they have been observed in many kinds of environments: indoor and outdoor school environments, subway stations and in ambient urban background air. Therefore, PM concentration data obtained with the TSI DustTrak DRX models should be handled with care and meticulously revised before being considered valid. Air quality in subway systems is of interest not only because particulate matter (PM) concentrations can be high, but also because of the peculiarly metalliferous chemical character of the particles, most of which differ radically from those of outdoor ambient air. We report on the oxidative potential (OP) of PM 2.5 samples collected in the Barcelona subway system in different types of stations. The PM chemical composition of these samples showed typically high concentrations of Fe, Total Carbon, Ba, Cu, Mn, Zn and Cr sourced from rail tracks, wheels, catenaries, brake pads and pantographs. Two toxicological indicators of oxidative activity, ascorbic acid (AA) oxidation (expressed as OP AA μg −1 or OP AA m −3 ) and glutathione (GSH) oxidation (expressed as OP GSH μg −1 or OP GSH m −3 ), showed low OP for all samples (compared with outdoor air) but considerable variation between stations (0.9–2.4 OP AA μg −1 ; 0.4–1.9 OP GSH μg −1 ). Results indicate that subway PM toxicity is not related to variations in PM 2.5 concentrations produced by ventilation changes, tunnel works, or station design, but may be affected more by the presence of metallic trace elements such as Cu and Sb sourced from brakes and pantographs. Evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD) was applied to quantify HULIS (humic-like substances) for the first time in 2012 winter and 2013 summer at an urban site in Lanzhou. Water soluble organic carbon (WSOC), water soluble inorganic ions, and carbonaceous species (OC/EC) were also analyzed. The results show that OM (Organic Matter = OC × 1.6, constituting 45.8% to PM 2.5 ) was the most abundant species, followed by SNA (SO 4 2 − + NO 3 − + NH 4 + , constituting 23.4% to PM 2.5 ). The chemical species were in the order of: OC > EC > SO 4 2 − > NO 3 − > NH 4 + > Cl − > Ca 2 + > K + . The annual average concentration of HULIS was 4.70 μg/m − 3 and HULISc (carbon content of HULIS) contributed 6.19% to PM 2.5 and 45.6% to WSOC, indicating that HULIS was the most important components of WSOC. The concentration of HULIS was 2.14 ± 0.80 μg/m 3 in summer and 7.24 ± 2.77 μg/m 3 in winter, respectively. The concentrations of HULIS were relatively low and stable in summer, while high and varied dramatically in winter. The abundance of HULISc in WSOC shows a more concentrated distribution in Lanzhou, with a range between 0.28–0.57. The ratios of HULIS/K + were 6.25 ± 1.41 and 6.14 ± 1.96 in summer and winter, respectively, suggesting there were other significant sources in addition to biomass burning emissions. HULIS and WSOC exhibited similar seasonal variation and had a strong positive correlation. In addition to the good relationship (0.89) between HULIS and Cl − in winter, the great enhancement of HULIS with significantly high Cl − and relatively low K + in winter indicated that residential coal burning was probably an important HULIS source in winter. Correlation and back trajectory analysis suggested that biomass burning and secondary formation were also important HULIS sources and the contribution of HULIS from dust could be neglected. With the objective of estimating the impact of harbour activities on ambient PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels at the urban area of Barcelona, a one year long monitoring campaign was carried out in the context of the European APICE project (MED-FEDER-EC). This campaign was simultaneously conducted at the port and a central urban background site. A detailed PM 10 and PM 2.5 chemical speciation analysis was carried out with samples from both sites. Subsequently, a source apportionment analysis by means of the PMF receptor model was performed. Six common factors were identified, explaining local to regional emission sources (fuel oil combustion, industrial emissions, mineral-road dust resuspension, and road traffic emissions) and aerosol formation/transformation processes (secondary aerosols including ammonium sulphate and organic aerosols, and a mixed source accounting for aged sea spray and secondary nitrate). Around 50–55% PM 10 and PM 2.5 measured at the port was attributed to harbour activities: mineral matter from road dust and construction works of a new port area, vehicle traffic and fuel oil combustion. The estimated contribution of harbour emissions to the urban background reached 9–12% for PM 10 and 11–15% for PM 2.5 and is linked to primary emissions from fuel oil combustion but also to the formation of secondary aerosols. It becomes relevant to highlight the significantly higher contribution of secondary aerosols at the urban background when compared with the harbour site. Our hypothesis points to the fast formation of secondary ammonium sulphate within the city, after the reaction of SO 2 /H 2 SO 4 transported by sea breezes with NH 3 , which is emitted in large amounts in Barcelona; and also to the enhanced formation of secondary organic aerosols within the city. This study broadens our knowledge on atmospheric phenomenology in urban Mediterranean cities and claims for effective abatement strategies focused on maritime practises, in agreement with the driving axis of the APICE project. Human civilization is currently facing two particular challenges: population growth with a strong trend towards urbanization and climate change. The latter is now no longer seriously questioned. The primary concern is to limit anthropogenic climate change and to adapt our societies to its effects. Schools are a key part of the structure of our societies. If future generations are to take control of the manifold global problems, we have to offer our children the best possible infrastructure for their education: not only in terms of the didactic concepts, but also with regard to the climatic conditions in the school environment. Between the ages of 6 and 19, children spend up to 8 h a day in classrooms. The conditions are, however, often inacceptable and regardless of the geographic situation, all the current studies report similar problems: classrooms being too small for the high number of school children, poor ventilation concepts, considerable outdoor air pollution and strong sources of indoor air pollution. There have been discussions about a beneficial and healthy air quality in classrooms for many years now and in recent years extensive studies have been carried out worldwide. The problems have been clearly outlined on a scientific level and there are prudent and feasible concepts to improve the situation. The growing number of publications also highlights the importance of this subject. High carbon dioxide concentrations in classrooms, which indicate poor ventilation conditions, and the increasing particle matter in urban outdoor air have, in particular, been identified as primary causes of poor indoor air quality in schools. Despite this, the conditions in most schools continue to be in need of improvement. There are many reasons for this. In some cases, the local administrative bodies do not have the budgets required to address such concerns, in other cases regulations and laws stand in contradiction to the demands for better indoor air quality, and sometimes the problems are simply ignored. This review summarizes the current results and knowledge gained from the scientific literature on air quality in classrooms. Possible scenarios for the future are discussed and guideline values proposed which can serve to help authorities, government organizations and commissions improve the situation on a global level. PM 2.5 aerosol samples were collected from January 2013 to January 2014 on the kerbside of a major arterial route in the city of Oporto, Portugal, and later analyzed for carbonaceous fractions and water soluble ions. The average concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in the aerosol were 6.2 μg/m 3 , 5.0 μg/m 3 and 3.8 μg/m 3 , respectively, and fit within the range of values that have been observed close to major roads in Europe, Asia and North America. On average, carbonaceous matter accounted for 56% of the gravimetrically measured PM 2.5 mass. The three carbon fractions exhibited a similar seasonal variation, with high concentrations in late autumn and in winter, and low concentrations in spring. SO 4 2 − was the dominant water soluble ion, followed by NO 3 − , NH 4 + , Cl − , Na + , K + , oxalate, Ca 2 + , Mg 2 + , formate, methanesulfonate and acetate. Some of these ions exhibited a clear seasonal trend during the study period. The average OC/EC ratio for the entire set of samples was 1.28 ± 0.61, which was consistent with a significant influence of vehicle exhaust emissions on aerosol composition. On the other hand, the average WSOC/OC ratio was 0.67 ± 0.23, reflecting the influence of other emitting sources. WSOC was highly correlated with nssK + , a tracer of biomass combustion, and was not correlated with nssSO 4 2 − , a species associated with secondary processes, suggesting that the main source of WSOC was biomass burning. Most of the SO 4 2 − was anthropogenic in origin and was closely associated with NH 4 + , pointing to the formation of secondary aerosols. Na + , Cl − and methanesulfonate were clearly associated with marine sources while NO 3 − was related with combustion of both fossil and non-fossil fuels. Air quality in nine National Parks in mainland Spain was assessed analysing SO 2 , NO x , O 3 , PM 10 and PM 2.5 data from background stations. As emissions in and around parks are limited, the levels of primary pollutants are low. Concentrations of secondary pollutants are high especially in summer due to photochemical production. The geographical variability of pollutants responds to regional emission patterns and the dominant circulation regimes in different regions resulting in west-east gradients for O 3 and PM . Seasonal variability of pollutants was also interpreted in virtue of transport scenarios, changes in photochemical activity and emissions variability. NO x and SO 2 , maximize in winter due to higher emissions while O 3 and PM do it in summer due to photochemical production, lower precipitation and, in the case of PM , the occurrence of African dust outbreaks. Water spraying and/or chemical suppressants such as salts and polymers have been suggested to reduce road dust resuspension due to their capability to increase adhesion, and therefore the effective size and weight of particles, but contrasting results have been obtained so further testing are needed. This study presents the first results of street washing and Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA) efficiencies at two industrial roads (paved and unpaved) in the Mediterranean region where the high solar radiation, warm climate, and scarce precipitation, may play a key role in determining the efficiency of mitigation techniques Results show that, at both sites, street washing (water only) was more effective than CMA. Street washing made observe 18% (daily basis) and >90% (first hour) reductions of kerbside PM10 concentrations for the paved and unpaved road respectively, while with CMA PM10 decrease was generally lower and with less statistical significance. Ambient ultrafine particle number concentrations (PNC) have inhomogeneous spatio-temporal distributions and depend on a number of different urban factors, including background conditions and distant sources. This paper quantitatively compares exposure to ambient ultrafine particles at urban schools in two cities in developed countries, with high insolation climatic conditions, namely Brisbane (Australia) and Barcelona (Spain). The analysis used comprehensive indoor and outdoor air quality measurements at 25 schools in Brisbane and 39 schools in Barcelona. PNC modes were analysed with respect to ambient temperature, land use and urban characteristics, combined with the measured elemental carbon concentrations, NO x (Brisbane) and NO 2 (Barcelona). The trends and modes of the quantified weekday average daily cycles of ambient PNC exhibited significant differences between the two cities. PNC increases were observed during traffic rush hours in both cases. However, the mid-day peak was dominant in Brisbane schools and had the highest contribution to total PNC for both indoors and outdoors. In Barcelona, the contribution from traffic was highest for ambient PNC, while the mid-day peak had a slightly higher contribution for indoor concentrations. Analysis of the relationships between PNC and land use characteristics in Barcelona schools showed a moderate correlation with the percentage of road network area and an anti-correlation with the percentage of green area. No statistically significant correlations were found for Brisbane. Overall, despite many similarities between the two cities, school-based exposure patterns were different. The main source of ambient PNC at schools was shown to be traffic in Barcelona and mid-day new particle formation in Brisbane. The mid-day PNC peak in Brisbane could have been driven by the combined effect of background and meteorological conditions, as well as other local/distant sources. Road dust emission is an emerging issue in air quality due to the lack of remediation measures in contrast to vehicle exhaust emissions. The evidence of receptor modeling studies allows for quantifying impact on a few receptors, but the high cost of PM chemical speciation data and the questionable representativeness of single monitoring sites, limit considerably the development of population exposure estimates and epidemiologic studies based on georeferenced data. This study attempts to initiate and promote urban-scale dispersion modeling for road dust emissions, which will allow for a more robust estimate of population exposure and health outcomes. The TNO URBIS (URBan Information System) model was applied in the city of Barcelona, implementing a Gaussian line source and a street canyon dispersion model, together with new experimental estimates of road dust emission factors and algorithm to describe the time variability. Annual, daily and hourly road dust contributions were simulated and validated against observation of PM10, mineral dust and hourly PM2.5-10 concentrations. Results show that road dust contributed 9–15% to PM10 levels at background sites, and 23–44% at traffic sites. Highest contributions were modeled in the commercial/residential district where most of population live and work (Eixample) structured by 120 m wide square blocks, separated by roads with >10,000 vehicles per day. Street level contributions rise up to 20 μ g/m 3 (96% of roads) and an additional 3% of roads within 20–40 μ g/m 3 . Hourly simulations of road dust contributions revealed to benefit from the implementation of the new emission module ( Amato et al., 2012 ), able to describe the exponential recovery of road dust emission potential after rain events, when compared to common approach such as the use of constant emission factor or an ON/OFF approach. Correlation coefficients with observed data varied from 0.61, 0.58 and 0.43 for annual, daily and hourly means, respectively, revealing a clear improvement in terms of both spatial and temporal variability. However, more efforts need to be done in validating the model in different climatic scenarios and evaluating the seasonal variation of road dust emissions, due to droughts or Saharan dust events. Conventional subway systems are characterized by high particulate matter (PM) concentrations. To relate PM exposure to adverse health effects it is important to determine the dose of the inhaled particles in the human respiratory tract (HRT). Therefore, the total and regional doses of particles for a healthy adult male using the dosimetry model ExDoM in the subway system were estimated. The overall dose was determined using the average exposure PM 2.5 concentrations obtained from an extensive campaign in the Barcelona subway system, including measurements on the platforms and inside the trains. Despite the lower PM 2.5 concentrations inside the trains with respect to those on station platforms, the highest dose was observed inside the trains due to longer exposure time, evidencing the importance of the exposure period in the estimation of the particle dose. Overall, during a subway commuting travel, roughly 80% of the inhaled mass of subway PM 2.5 was deposited in the HRT. The highest amount of the inhaled particles was deposited in the extrathoracic region (68%), whereas the deposition was much smaller in the tracheobronchial tree (4%) and alveolar–interstitial region (10%). Individual's daily exposure to PM 2.5 and dose were estimated, considering a typical time-activity pattern of an adult male who lives in Barcelona and commutes by subway. While a subject typically spends approx. 3% of the day in the subway system, this microenvironment may account for up to 47% of the total PM 2.5 daily dose. These results might be similarly high for other commuting modes due to the reported high PM exposure levels. The dose is mainly dependent on the particle size and exposure concentrations. In recent years monitoring the presence of psychotropic compounds in wastewater has been proposed as a tool to estimate community drug use. Measurement of drugs of abuse (DAs) in airborne particulate is currently being explored as an additional tool to evaluate drug use patterns in time and space, and identify potential emission sources. In this study, we comprehensively monitor the occurrence of 22 licit and illicit DAs and transformation products, belonging to 6 different chemical groups, in airborne particulate matter (PM10) in the city of Barcelona. In order to study spatial and temporal variations, samples were collected from 12 different selected locations on one weekday (Wednesday) and one weekend day (Saturday), during five consecutive weeks. A previously developed analytical methodology, based on pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) determination, was adapted for analysis of the target compounds with satisfactory performance, ensuring reliability of results. Among the investigated compounds, cannabinol (CBN), cocaine (COC), and methamphetamine (MA) were found to be the most ubiquitous and abundant compounds in PM10 with concentrations ranging from 0.7 pg/m 3 (MA) to 6020 pg/m 3 (CBN). Significant differences in total DA concentrations in PM10 were observed across sampling days and locations. DA emissions were identified in highly densely populated areas, where popular commercial and nightlife zones are located. Psychoactive effects due to inhalation of measured concentrations are probably negligible; however, potential health effects due to chronic exposure have not been explored yet. Legislation controlling vehicle emissions has been credited with a general downward trend in NO x (NO 2 +NO) concentrations in Europe since the 1990's. However, recent studies suggest that traffic (roadside) (TR) NO 2 concentrations have not decreased as expected, and in some cases increased, most likely due to the use of oxidation catalysts and particle filters in diesel vehicles (EURO III, IV, V, VI). In this study we describe the time trends in NO x , NO 2 and NO concentrations in 9 European cities comparing TR and urban background (UB) monitoring locations. In each city, we collected hourly city-specific NO x , NO, and NO 2 data from one TR and one UB monitoring site for each year. We describe hourly, weekly, seasonal and inter-annual patterns for periods corresponding to the implementation dates of various EURO vehicle emission standards regulating NO x emissions. The diurnal patterns in all 9 cities strongly reflected morning and evening traffic. In addition, lower weekend concentrations were observed. The NO x concentrations from the TR sites remain unchanged in the majority of the cities over the study period. When stratified by 3 time periods according to the implementation of the EURO standards, an increasing NO 2 /NO x ratio in 7/9 cities with time was noted. However, over the same time period the NO/NO 2 ratio decreased in 8/9 cities. A permanent inversion of the NO/NO 2 ratio was observed to occur in 2003 in 5/9 cities. Our analyses of temporal and diurnal patterns of NO x in European cities show reductions in concentrations consistent with reductions in primary emissions likely arising from the implementation of successive EURO standards. The generally constant or increasing NO 2 concentrations in the majority of the cities assessed over the study period underline the need of further regulative measures to meet the air quality standards and consequently to minimise adverse effects on human health. Greenness has been reported to improve mental and physical health. Reduction in exposure to air pollution has been suggested to underlie the health benefits of greenness; however, the available evidence on the mitigating effect of greenness on air pollution remains limited and inconsistent. We investigated the association between greenness within and surrounding school boundaries and monitored indoor and outdoor levels of traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) including NO 2 , ultrafine particles, black carbon, and traffic-related PM 2.5 at 39 schools across Barcelona, Spain, in 2012. TRAP levels at schools were measured twice during two one-week campaigns separated by 6 months. Greenness within and surrounding school boundaries was measured as the average of satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) within boundaries of school and a 50 m buffer around the school, respectively. Mixed effects models were used to quantify the associations between school greenness and TRAP levels, adjusted for relevant covariates. Higher greenness within and surrounding school boundaries was consistently associated with lower indoor and outdoor TRAP levels. Reduction in indoor TRAP levels was partly mediated by the reduction in outdoor TRAP levels. We also observed some suggestions for stronger associations between school surrounding greenness and outdoor TRAP levels for schools with higher number of trees around them. Our observed reduction of TRAP levels at schools associated with school greenness can be of public importance, considering the burden of health effects of exposure to TRAPs in schoolchildren. Ultrafine particles are characterized by a high surface area per mass. Particle surface has been reported to play a significant role in determining the toxicological activity of ultrafine particles. In light of this potential role, the time variation of lung deposited surface area (LDSA) concentrations in the alveolar region was studied at the urban background environment of Barcelona (Spain), aiming to asses which processes and sources govern this parameter. Simultaneous data on Black Carbon (BC), total particle number (N) and particle number size distribution were correlated with LDSA. Average LDSA concentrations in Barcelona were 37 ± 26 μm 2 cm − 3 , levels which seem to be characteristic for urban environments under traffic influence across Europe. Results confirm the comparability between LDSA data provided by the online monitor and those calculated based on particle size distributions (by SMPS), and reveal that LDSA concentrations are mainly influenced by particles in the size range 50–200 nm. A set of representative daily cycles for LDSA concentrations was obtained by means of a k -means cluster technique. The contribution of traffic emissions to daily patterns was evidenced in all the clusters, but was quantitatively different. Traffic events under stable atmospheric conditions increased mean hourly background LDSA concentrations up to 6 times, attaining levels higher than 200 μm 2 cm − 3 . However, under warm and relatively clean atmospheric conditions, the traffic rush hour contribution to the daily LDSA mean appeared to be lower and the contribution of new urban particle formation events (by photochemically induced nucleation) was detected. These nucleation events were calculated to increase average background LDSA concentrations by 15–35% (maximum LDSA levels = 45–50 μm 2 cm − 3 ). Thereby, it may be concluded that in the urban background of Barcelona road traffic is the main source increasing the aerosol surface area which can deposit on critical regions of the human lung, followed by nucleation episodes. Experimental and geochemical modelling studies were carried out to identify mineral and solid phases containing major, minor, and trace elements and the mechanism of the retention of these elements in Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD)-gypsum samples from a coal-fired power plant under filtered water recirculation to the scrubber and forced oxidation conditions. The role of the pH and related environmental factors on the mobility of Li, Ni, Zn, As, Se, Mo, and U from FGD-gypsums for a comprehensive assessment of element leaching behaviour were also carried out. Results show that the extraction rate of the studied elements generally increases with decreasing the pH value of the FGD-gypsum leachates. The increase of the mobility of elements such as U, Se, and As in the FGD-gypsum entails the modification of their aqueous speciation in the leachates; UO2SO4, H2Se, and HAsO2 are the aqueous complexes with the highest activities under acidic conditions. The speciation of Zn, Li, and Ni is not affected in spite of pH changes; these elements occur as free cations and associated to SO4² in the FGD-gypsum leachates. The mobility of Cu and Mo decreases by decreasing the pH of the FGD-gypsum leachates, which might be associated to the precipitation of CuSe2 and MoSe2, respectively. Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry of the solid phase combined with geochemical modelling of the aqueous phase has proved useful in understanding the mobility and geochemical behaviour of elements and their partitioning into FGD-gypsum samples. The Barcelona subway system comprises eight subway lines, at different depths, with different tunnel dimensions, station designs and train frequencies. An extensive measurement campaign was performed in this subway system in order to characterise the airborne particulate matter (PM) measuring its concentration and investigating its variability, both inside trains and on platforms, in two different seasonal periods (warmer and colder), to better understand the main factors controlling it, and therefore the way to improve air quality. The majority of PM in the underground stations is generated within the subway system, due to abrasion and wear of rail tracks, wheels and braking pads caused during the motion of the trains. Substantial variation in average PM concentrations between underground stations was observed, which might be associated to different ventilation and air conditioning systems, characteristics/design of each station and variations in the train frequency. Average PM 2.5 concentrations on the platforms in the subway operating hours ranged from 20 to 51 and from 41 to 91 μg m − 3 in the warmer and colder period, respectively, mainly related to the seasonal changes in the subway ventilation systems. The new subway lines with platform screen doors showed PM 2.5 concentrations lower than those in the conventional system, which is probably attributable not only to the more advanced ventilation setup, but also to the lower train frequency and the design of the stations. PM concentrations inside the trains were generally lower than those on the platforms, which is attributable to the air conditioning systems operating inside the trains, which are equipped with air filters. This study allows the analysis and quantification of the impact of different ventilation settings on air quality, which provides an improvement on the knowledge for the general understanding and good management of air quality in the subway system. In order to address road traffic emissions, studies need to be performed under realistic driving conditions where the input from other sources is minimised. Measurements in traffic tunnels have been used for quantifying emissions, but so far no study has established emission factors (EFs) for Southern Europe. To fill this gap, a sampling campaign was carried out for one week in the Liberdade Avenue tunnel (Braga, Portugal). The campaign included the monitoring of gaseous pollutants (CO 2 , CO, NO x ) and suspended particulate matter (PM) at two sites, one in the tunnel and another in an urban background location. Organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC) in size-segregated particles (PM 0.5, PM 0.5–1 , PM 1–2.5 and PM 2.5–10 ) were determined by a thermal–optical system, whereas major and trace elements were analysed by ICP-MS and ICP-AES. PM 0.5 accounted for 56% of the PM 10 mass, while PM 2.5–10 represented only 12%. The carbonaceous fraction was concentrated in PM 0.5 , encompassing 88% of the EC and 67% of the OC present in PM 10 . Elements attributable to non-exhaust emissions could be divided into two groups. Fe, Ba, Cu, Sb, Sn and Zn, from tyre and brake wear, were more abundant in particles between 1 and 2 μm. Ca, Al, K, Sr and Ti, associated with soil resuspension, were mainly present in particles > 2 μm. The average EFs of CO, CO 2 and NO x were 212, 4.02 and 1.22 g veh − 1 km − 1 , respectively, while values of 152 mg PM 10 veh − 1 km − 1 and 133 mg PM 2.5 veh − 1 km − 1 were obtained for the particles. OC and EC emission factor was 39 mg veh − 1 km − 1 for PM 10 . The corresponding OC and EC values for PM 2.5 were 34 and 38 mg veh − 1 km − 1 . A detailed spatial and temporal assessment of urban NH 3 levels and potential emission sources was made with passive samplers in six major Spanish cities (Barcelona, Madrid, A Coruña, Huelva, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Valencia). Measurements were conducted during two different periods (winter–autumn and spring–summer) in each city. Barcelona showed the clearest spatial pattern, with the highest concentrations in the old city centre, an area characterised by a high population density and a dense urban architecture. The variability in NH 3 concentrations did not follow a common seasonal pattern across the different cities. The relationship of urban NH 3 with SO 2 and NO X allowed concluding on the causes responsible for the variations in NH 3 levels between measurement periods observed in Barcelona, Huelva and Madrid. However, the factors governing the variations in A Coruña, Valencia and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are still not fully understood. This study identified a broad variability in NH 3 concentrations at the city-scale, and it confirms that NH 3 sources in Spanish urban environments are vehicular traffic, biological sources (e.g. garbage containers), wastewater treatment plants, solid waste treatment plants and industry. The importance of NH 3 monitoring in urban environments relies on its role as a precursor of secondary inorganic species and therefore PM X . Further research should be addressed in order to establish criteria to develop and implement mitigation strategies for cities, and to include urban NH 3 sources in the emission inventories. This paper reports on results from a multi-sampling campaign (stack, fugitive emissions and ambient air measurements) to characterise the geochemical signature of metal and metalloid particles emitted from one of the largest Cu-smelters in the world (in Huelva, SW Spain). Exceptionally high concentrations of very fine particles (<0.33 μm) bearing As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Bi, Zn (∑>100 μg m −3 ) are emitted from the Flash Smelting Furnaces, but high levels are also emitted by the other main chimney stacks, namely Refining Furnaces, Sulphuric Plant, Converters Unit, and Crushing Plant. Enhanced concentrations of the same elements are also observed in ground measurements near the industrial complex. During the sampling campaign, the presence of plumes from the Cu-smelter over the nearby city of Huelva was identified based on increased concentrations of gaseous pollutants, particulate metals and ultrafine particle numbers (PN). The results demonstrate that the Cu-smelter is an important source of inhalable toxic elements carried by fine airborne particles. The pollution abatement systems applied so far appear to be relatively ineffective in preventing metalliferous air pollution events, potentially increasing health risks to local and regional populations. Abstract: Fly ash (FA) disposal in landfills has a significant economic and environmental burden. A promising approach for FA valorisation aside from building purposes is the recovery of valuable elements since FA has a huge potential role as a source of valuable metals. In most cases, reported work in this area has been of theoretical research and further development work is needed. Germanium and gallium occur in relatively high proportions and mainly as water soluble and oxide species, respectively in the Puertollano Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) fly ash. Both the speciation and concentrations of Ge and Ga in this IGCC FA allowed starting research for developing extraction methods. High but not regular extraction yields were achieved in previous investigations. The aim of this research work is focused on the optimisation of Ge and Ga extraction conditions from IGCC FA for its feasible industrial application regardless the operational conditions of the IGCC plant. To this aim, first the daily, monthly, and yearly variability of Ge and Ga concentrations in IGCC fly ashes were determined. Samples were taken during almost 10years. Then a number of extraction tests were carried out using different extractants to cover a wide range of extraction conditions (acid, alkaline, complexant, reducing and oxidising), on IGCC FA samples produced under different operating conditions. High and regular Ge extraction yields (up to 83% after 2h leaching period) may be achieved using a weak acid solution. Gallium yielded up to 70 and 64% extraction after a 24h leaching period using a weak acid and alkaline solution, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The chemical analysis of 553 school playground and classroom PM2.5 filters collected during the BREATHE sampling campaign in Barcelona, Spain, reveals a remarkable degree of spatial and temporal variability in ambient PM composition. Classroom air quality shows average PM2.5 concentrations of 37 μg m−3 (28% higher than outdoors), with much of this mass comprising carbon (including abundant cotton fibres), blackboard chalk particles and silicates. Where sandy playgrounds are present these exert a major influence on inhalable PM2.5 concentrations both indoors and outdoors. Throughout the city there is widespread contamination by metalliferous traffic particles, especially at schools located close to major urban highways where outdoor EC levels can be an order of magnitude higher than in peripheral, green belt schools. Penetration into the classroom of outdoor EC, ammonium sulphate and anthropogenic metals such as Cu, Sn, Sb, Zn and V is pervasive, especially during warmer months. In contrast, levels of nitrate and ammonium are much higher outdoors than in the classroom, especially during winter. Abstract: Shipping emissions are currently increasing and will most likely continue to do so in the future due to the increase of global-scale trade. Ship emissions have the potential to contribute to air quality degradation in coastal areas, in addition to contributing to global air pollution. With the aim to quantify the impacts of shipping emissions on urban air quality in coastal areas in Europe, an in depth literature review was carried out focussing on particulate matter and gaseous pollutants but also reviewing the main chemical tracers of shipping emissions, the particle size distribution of ship-derived particulates and their contributions to population exposure and atmospheric deposition. Mitigation strategies were also addressed. In European coastal areas, shipping emissions contribute with 1–7% of ambient air PM10 levels, 1–14% of PM2.5, and at least 11% of PM1. Contributions from shipping to ambient NO2 levels range between 7 and 24%, with the highest values being recorded in the Netherlands and Denmark. Impacts from shipping emissions on SO2 concentrations were reported for Sweden and Spain. Shipping emissions impact not only the levels and composition of particulate and gaseous pollutants, but may also enhance new particle formation processes in urban areas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Trace and major elements concentrations in PM10 and PM2.5 were measured at 20 sites spread in the Barcelona metropolitan area (1 rural background, 6 urban background, 13 road traffic sites) and at 1 reference site. Three 2-week samples per site and size fraction were collected during 2009 using low volume samplers, adding a total of 120 samples. Collected samples were analysed for elemental composition using Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF). EC, OC, and hopanes and steranes concentrations in PM2.5 were determined. Positive Matrix Factorisation (PMF) model was used for a source apportionment analysis. The work was performed as part of the ESCAPE project. Elements were found in concentrations within the usual range in Spanish urban areas. Mineral elements were measured in higher concentrations during the warm season, due to enhanced resuspension; concentrations of fueloil combustion elements were also higher in summer. Elements in higher concentration at the traffic sites were: Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Pb, Sn, Zn and Zr. Spatial variations related to non-traffic sources were observed for concentrations of Br, Cl, K, and Na (sea salt origin) and Ni, V and S (shipping emissions), which were higher at the coastal sites, as well as for Zn and Pb, higher at sites closer to industrial facilities. Five common sources for PM10 and PM2.5 were identified by PMF: road traffic (with tracers Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mo and Zn); fueloil combustion (Ni and V); secondary sulphate; industry (Pb and Zn); and mineral source (Al, Ca, Mg, Si, Sr and Ti). A marine aerosol source, a mixture of sea salt with aged anthropogenic aerosols, was found only in PM10. EC, hopanes and steranes concentrations correlate strongly with the PM10 road traffic source contributions, being hence all attributed to the same source. OC may arise from other sources in addition to road traffic and have a high contribution of secondary OC. Significant spatial and temporal variation in the PM2.5 and PM10 elemental composition was found. Spatial patterns differed per element, related to the main source. Abstract: Wildfires produce a significant release of gases and particles affecting climate and air quality. In the Mediterranean region, shrublands significantly contribute to burned areas and may show specific emission profiles. Our objective was to depict and quantify the primary-derived aerosols and precursors of secondary particulate species released during shrubland experimental fires, in which fire-line intensity values were equivalent to those of moderate shrubland wildfires, by using a number of different methodologies for the characterization of organic and inorganic compounds in both gas-phase and particulate-phase. Emissions of PM mass, particle number concentrations and organic and inorganic PM x components during flaming and smouldering phases were characterized in a field shrubland fire experiment. Our results revealed a clear prevalence of K+ and SO4 2− as inorganic ions released during the flaming–smouldering processes, accounting for 68–80% of the inorganic soluble fraction. During the residual-smouldering phases, in addition to K+ and SO4 2−, Ca2+ was found in significant amounts probably due the predominance of re-suspension processes (ashes and soil dust) over other emission sources during this stage. Concerning organic markers, the chromatograms were dominated by phenols, n-alkanals and n-alkanones, as well as by alcohol biomarkers in all the PM x fractions investigated. Levoglucosan was the most abundant degradation compound with maximum emission factors between 182 and 261 mg kg−1 in PM2.5 and PM10 respectively. However, levoglucosan was also observed in significant amounts in the gas-phase. The most representative organic volatile constituents in the smoke samples were alcohols, carbonyls, acids, monocyclic and bicyclic arenes, isoprenoids and alkanes compounds. The emission factors obtained in this study may contribute to the validation and improvement of national and international emission inventories of this intricate and diffuse emission source. Abstract: This work was carried out in the framework of the Cal-Mex project, which focuses on investigating the atmosphere along Mexico–California border region. Sampling was carried out at two sites located in Tijuana urban area: Parque Morelos and Metales y Derivados. PM2.5 and PM10 24 h samples were collected every three days from 17th May 2010 to 27th June 2010, and were used for gravimetric and chemical analyses (major and minor elements, inorganic ions, organic and elemental carbon) of PM. A subsequent Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis was performed. PM2.5 and PM10 average concentrations during Cal-Mex were relatively lower compared to usual annual averages. Trace elements concentrations recorded in the present study were lower than those recorded in Mexico City in 2006, with the exception of Pb at Metales y Derivados, attributed to the influence of a specific industrial source, which also includes As, Cd and Tl. Apart from this industrial source, both urban sites were found to be affected by similar sources with respect to bulk PM. Fine PM (PM2.5) was mainly apportioned by fueloil and biomass combustion and secondary aerosols, and road traffic. Coarse PM (PM2.5–10) was mainly apportioned by a mineral source (sum of road dust resuspension, construction emissions and natural soil) and fresh and aged sea salt. Abstract: An artificial neural network (ANN) was developed and tested to forecast PM10 daily concentration in two contrasted environments in NE Spain, a regional background site (Montseny), and an urban background site (Barcelona-CSIC), which was highly influenced by vehicular emissions. In order to predict 24-h average PM10 concentrations, the artificial neural network previously developed by Caselli et al. (2009) was improved by using hourly PM concentrations and deterministic factors such as a Saharan dust alert. In particular, the model input data for prediction were the hourly PM10 concentrations 1-day in advance, local meteorological data and information about air masses origin. The forecasted performance indexes for both sites were calculated and they showed better results for the regional background site in Montseny (R2 =0.86, SI=0.75) than for urban site in Barcelona (R2 =0.73, SI=0.58), influenced by local and sometimes unexpected sources. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis conducted to understand the importance of the different variables included among the input data, showed that local meteorology and air masses origin are key factors in the model forecasts. This result explains the reason for the improvement of ANN's forecasting performance at the Montseny site with respect to the Barcelona site. Moreover, the artificial neural network developed in this work could prove useful to predict PM10 concentrations, especially, at regional background sites such as those on the Mediterranean Basin which are primarily affected by long-range transports. Hence, the artificial neural network presented here could be a powerful tool for obtaining real time information on air quality status and could aid stakeholders in their development of cost-effective control strategies. Abstract: An intensive monitoring campaign was carried out in the harbor of Barcelona (Spain) to quantify the contribution of primary shipping emissions (PSE) on PM10. Chemical composition of inorganic species, as well as OC and EC, was completed, and a source apportionment analysis by Positive Matrix Factorization was conducted. Among the 6 sources extracted, two were linked to harbor emissions: dusty materials released in different areas along the harbor and fuel–oil combustion. On average, harbor emissions accounted for 31% of the PM10 mass. Since the chemical signature of PSE was not determined neither their contribution was obtained, additional approaches were followed and mainly consisted in: 1) the evaluation of V/Ni and V/Cu ratios to identify those days affected by PSE; 2) the identification of the chemical components increasing under the influence of PSE; 3) the calculation of the daily and average PSE from their experimentally-determined chemical signature and the experimental concentrations of vanadium. As a result, the contribution of PSE was estimated in 0.84μgm−3 (2.7% of PM10) and the residual fuel–oil combustion factor (3.6μgm−3, 12% of PM10) was interpreted as aged shipping emissions. The present study splits the contribution of shipping emissions into primary and aged, and highlights the importance of atmospheric mixing and aging processes in western Mediterranean atmospheres. Abstract: Particulate matter (PM) pollution in cities has severe impact on morbidity and mortality of their population. In these cities, road dust resuspension contributes largely to PM and airborne heavy metals concentrations. However, the short-term variation of emission through resuspension is not well described in the air quality models, hampering a reliable description of air pollution and related health effects. In this study we experimentally show that the emission strength of resuspension varies widely among road dust components/sources. Our results offer the first experimental evidence of different emission rates for mineral dust, heavy metals and carbon fractions due to traffic-induced resuspension. Also, the same component (or source) recovers differently in a road in Barcelona (Spain) and a road in Utrecht (The Netherlands). This finding has important implications on atmospheric pollution modelling, mostly for mineral dust, heavy metals and carbon species. After rain events, recoveries were generally faster in Barcelona rather than in Utrecht. The largest difference was found for the mineral dust (Al, Si, Ca). Tyre wear particles (organic carbon and zinc) recovered faster than other road dust particles in both cities. • Studies on air pollution and children cognitive functions are mainly observational. • We designed a randomized controlled trial using air cleaners with 2123 high school students. • Average levels of PM 2.5 and black carbon after 1.5 h were lower in classrooms with filtered air. • Short-term air filtering in classrooms did not affect attention function in adolescents. The recent evidence of the short-term impact of air pollution on youth cognitive functions is based primarily on observational studies. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to assess whether purifying the air of the classrooms produced short-term changes in attention processes of adolescents. We recruited a total of 2,123 adolescents (13–16 years old) in 33 high schools in Barcelona metropolitan area (Spain). In each school, adolescents from each class were randomly split into two equal-sized groups and assigned to two different classrooms. A set of two air cleaner devices with the same appearance (one recirculating and filtrating the air and the other only recirculating the air) was used. Each one of the devices was placed at random at one of the two classrooms. Students were masked to intervention allocation and had to complete several computerized activities for 1.5 h, including an attention test (Flanker task) to be performed at baseline and at the end of the intervention. The response speed consistency, expressed as hit reaction time standard error (HRT-SE, in ms), was measured as the primary outcome. Analyses were conducted using conditional linear regressions with classroom as strata, adjusted for variables that may differ from one class to another such as temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide concentration. Average levels of PM 2.5 and black carbon throughout the 1.5 h of experiment were 89% and 87%, respectively, lower in the classrooms with air cleaner than in the control classrooms. No differences were found in the median of HRT-SE between classrooms with cleaned air and normal air (percent change: 1.37%, 95% confidence interval: −2.81%, 5.56%). Sensitivity analyses with secondary attention outcomes resulted in similar findings. Cleaning the air of a classroom to reduce exposure to air pollutants for 1.5 h did not have an impact on the attention function of adolescents. Still, in light of previous evidence suggesting an association between air pollution and attention, further experimental studies should explore other short-term timescales of exposure and age ranges. Abstract: An atmospheric aerosol study was performed in 2008 inside an urban road tunnel, in Lisbon, Portugal. Using a high volume impactor, the aerosol was collected into four size fractions (PM0.5, PM0.5–1, PM1 – 2.5 and PM2.5 – 10) and analysed for particle mass (PM), organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), soluble inorganic ions and elemental composition. Three main groups of compounds were discriminated in the tunnel aerosol: carbonaceous, soil component and vehicle mechanical wear. Measurements indicate that Cu can be a good tracer for wear emissions of road traffic. Cu levels correlate strongly with Fe, Mn, Sn and Cr, showing a highly linear constant ratio in all size ranges, suggesting a unique origin through sizes. Ratios of Cu with other elements can be used to source apportion the trace elements present in urban atmospheres, mainly on what concerns coarse aerosol particles. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This work presents a summary of the results obtained from a study of the impact of African dust on levels of atmospheric suspended particulate matter registered among different monitoring sites in the Madrid Air Basin, in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. African dust outbreaks were identified over the period 2001–2008. Lidar measurements helped to assess the temporal evolution of the dust layers and subsequent impact on the surface boundary layer. Monthly trends were analyzed, revealing a late spring/summer maximum occurrence of episodes. The most common synoptic meteorological situations causing the transport of the African dusty air masses were also identified over the seasons. Time series of particulate matter daily concentrations recorded across Air Quality Network monitoring stations and sampling campaigns were collected and analysed. Our results show the contribution of mineral dust to PM10 (particulate matter lower than 10μm, aerodynamic diameter) during African dust outbreaks to be significantly high at rural and urban sites of the Madrid Air Basin, giving rise to exceedances of the PM10 daily limit value (50μg/m3). This result is especially relevant since European directive 2008/50/EC on air quality, takes into account the potential exceedance of the PM10 daily limit value, due to the transport of natural particles from arid regions. Abstract: Forest fire emissions modify the chemical composition of the atmosphere and the earth''s climate system. The Ayoraburning experiment was designed to assess and quantify fire emissions from Mediterranean shrublands. A number of gaseous pollutants and particulate matter metrics (CO2, CO, CH4, PM2.5) were measured during 3 burning replicates by using real-time monitors. Quantification of carbon emissions released during the experiments showed that 71% was CO2, 26% CO, 3% CH4, and only 0.3% was particulate carbon. Emission factors obtained for CO2, CO and CH4 were 1257 ± 40, 453 ± 28 and 46 ± 12 g kg−1 dry matter, respectively, and combustion efficiencies ranged from 0.46 to 0.99. The experiments allowed the estimation of carbon emission in the different fire phases. Thus, 25% of carbon was sampled in the flaming phase and 75% of C in the smoldering phase. Current natural greenhouse gas (GHG) emission inventories in Mediterranean countries underestimate the actual emissions from forest fires since they do not consider forest shrub understory and shrublands and since they assume that the CO2 emitted is offset by forest re-growth. Abstract: The acidification of the aqueous phase induced by the use of an aluminium additive (sulphate), to increase the SO2 trapping efficiency in flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) systems, results in significant differences in the speciation and partitioning of elements between the aqueous and solid phases of gypsum slurries from two Spanish coal-fired power plants (PP1 and PP2). The Al-additive increases the presence of the aqueous Al–Fx complexes in the gypsum slurry from PP2-2007. In the absence of (PP1) or using lower dosages (PP2-2008) of the Al-additive, the predominance of MgF2 and CaF2 in the FGD-gypsum slurries causes their subsequent precipitation, increasing the leachable potential of gypsum waste. This study evaluates the effect of the Al-additive on the fate of a number of elements during FGD by combining a number of experimental and modelling tools. The results suggest the precipitation of CaF2, MgF2, and CaUO4 in the PP1 FGD-gypsum, and Al2O3, AlHO2, KAl3(OH)6(SO4)2 and MgF2 in the PP2 2007 and 2008 FGD-gypsum. When Al-additive is added low amounts of heavy metals are found in the leachates of the FGD-gypsums since these remain mostly in solution of gypsum slurry. The reverse behaviour is found for Se. Abstract: Aim: The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between pregnant women''s personal exposures to NO x , NO2, PM2.5 concentration and absorbance as a marker for black carbon and their indoor and outdoor concentration levels at their residence, and also to identify predictors of personal exposure and indoor levels using questionnaire and time activity data. Method: We recruited 54 pregnant women in Barcelona who carried a personal PM2.5 sampler for two days and NO x /NO2 passive badges for one week, while indoor and outdoor PM2.5 and NO x /NO2 levels at their residence were simultaneously measured. Time activity and house characteristics were recorded. Gravimetry determinations for PM2.5 concentration and absorbance measurements were carried out on the PM2.5 filter samples. Results: Levels of personal exposure to NO x , PM2.5 and absorbance were slightly higher than indoor and outdoor levels (geometric mean of personal NO x  = 61.9 vs indoor NO x  = 60.6 μg m−3), while for NO2 the indoor levels were slightly higher than the personal ones. Generally, there was a high statistically significant correlation between personal exposure and indoor levels (Spearman''s r between 0.78 and 0.84). Women spent more than 60% of their time indoors at home. Ventilation of the house by opening the windows, the time spent cooking and indicators for traffic intensity were re-occurring statistically significant determinants of the personal and indoor pollutants levels with models for NO x explaining the 55% and 60% of the variability respectively, and models for NO2 explaining the 39% and 16% of the variability respectively. Models for PM2.5 and absorbance explained the least of the variability. Conclusion: Our findings improve the current understanding of the characterization and inter-associations between personal, indoor and outdoor pollution levels among pregnant women. Variability in personal and indoor NO x and to a lesser extent NO2 levels could be explained well, but not the variability in PM2.5 could be explained. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In spite of the high air quality and health relevance of PM emissions from road dust resuspension in large cities, very little is known on their temporal variability, severely hampering a reliable description of population exposure by dispersion models. We have experimentally monitored the mobile dust load (only inhalable fraction) in two different European urban environments resulting in the first empirical description of the temporal variation of road dust emission strength. In Central (The Netherlands) and Southern (Spain) European environments the loadings of mobile road dust particles <10 μm were found to be generally constant on a day-to-day scale, except during and in the hours immediately after rain events when the mobility of particles drops dramatically to values close to zero. After the rain event the mobile dust load increases exponentially tending to reach again the maximum value, result of the equilibrium between mobilization/buildup of dust and moistening/resuspension processes. The mobilization/buildup of particles smaller than 10 μm was found to be three times faster in Barcelona than in Utrecht, in relation to higher solar radiation. In Barcelona the recovery of mobile road dust reached 50%, 75%, and 90% of the maximum value after 8, 16 and 27 h, respectively. These values were independent of amounts of rain. In Utrecht the same thresholds were reached after, 28, 55 and 90 h, respectively. Our observations may suggest that, for reducing road dust emissions, light but frequent moistening of roads might be more effective than intensive occasional cleanings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In Winter 2009 an intensive experimental campaign (DAURE) was conducted in an urban site (Barcelona) and in an elevated rural background station (Montseny) in the western Mediterranean basin. During this period three main scenarios were identified based on distinct meteorological conditions: A) temperature inversion, B) cloudy days in normal conditions, and C) intense sea breeze. Filter samples of the submicron fraction (PM1) collected during these scenarios were analysed for organic tracer compounds to gain insight into the composition, sources, formation and processing of aerosol organic matter in the region under contrasting conditions. The results were compared to on-line Aerosol Mass Spectrometry (AMS) measurements. Scenario A conditions had the highest pollution concentrations in Barcelona (traffic and secondary aerosol formation) and lowest in Montseny whose sampling station remained above the mixing layer. Under scenario B the biomass burning contribution was highest in Montseny, reflecting nearby biomass burning sources. Under scenario C, the traffic-related contributions were highest in Montseny and lowest in Barcelona in comparison to the other samples, reflecting the enhanced pollution transport to Montseny and greater dilution in Barcelona. In this scenario, secondary organic aerosol was highest in Montseny. Molecular marker data and AMS source apportionment showed strong to moderate correlation for a) dicarboxylic acids and oxygenated organic aerosol, b) levoglucosan and biomass burning organic aerosol and c) Σn-alkanes and hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol. Abstract: Water re-circulation to the scrubber and co-combustion of coal with petroleum coke are the most significant factors that affect the retention capacity for trace elements in a power plant equipped with a forced-oxidation flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system. The water re-circulation favours the progressive saturation of most elements in the gypsum slurry with the subsequent increase in emission by entraining particles and droplets in the outgoing gas of FGD (OUT-FGD). The co-combustion increases the content of HCl and SO2 in the gaseous stream, which enhances the formation of gaseous chlorides species, especially of Hg, and the formation of condensed species of Cu, Cr, Ni, Na, Cd, and Zn OUT-FGD, respectively. High gaseous retention capacity (83–100%) for S, Cl, F, As, and B is attained by the whole plant with a subsequent reduction in their gaseous emissions below the limits established by the European directive 2001/80/EC for large combustion plants, and also below the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) threshold values. The retention of Se increases from 2007 (75%) to 2008 (97%). The emissions of gaseous Hg and particulate As, Zn, and Ni exceed the PRTR values. Remediation actions for the gaseous and PM emissions are relevant given the role of the filtered water re-circulation increasing the particles emissions OUT-FGD. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Atmospheric aerosol samples from a boreal forest (Hyytiälä, April 2007), a rural site in Hungary (K-puszta, summer 2008), a polluted rural area in Italy (San Pietro Capofiume, Po Valley, April 2008), a moderately polluted rural site in Germany located on a meadow (Melpitz, May 2008), a natural park in Spain (Montseny, March 2009) and two urban background locations (Zurich, December 2008, and Barcelona, February/March 2009) were collected. Aliphatics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbonyls, sterols, n-alkanols, acids, phenolic compounds and anhydrosugars in aerosols were chemically characterised by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, along with source attribution based on the carbon preference index (CPI), the ratios between the unresolved and the chromatographically resolved aliphatics, the contribution of wax n-alkanes, n-alkanols and n-alkanoic acids from plants, diagnostic ratios of individual target compounds and source-specific markers to organic carbon ratios. In spite of transboundary pollution episodes, Hyytiälä registered the lowest levels among all locations. CPI values close to 1 for the aliphatic fraction of the Montseny aerosol suggest that the anthropogenic input may be associated with the transport of aged air masses from the surrounding industrial/urban areas, which superimpose the locally originated hydrocarbons with biogenic origin. Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons in samples from San Pietro Capofiume reveal that fossil fuel combustion is a major source influencing the diel pattern of concentrations. This source contributed to 25–45% of the ambient organic carbon (OC) at the Po Valley site. Aerosols from the German meadow presented variable contributions from both biogenic and anthropogenic sources. The highest levels of vegetation wax components and biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) products were observed at K-puszta, while anthropogenic SOA compounds predominated in Barcelona. The primary vehicular emissions in the Spanish city accounted for around 25–30% of the OC in aerosols. Besides the traffic input (10% of OC), residential wood burning was found to be another dominant emission source contributing to the atmospheric aerosol (up to 38% of OC) at the Swiss urban location. It was estimated that around 10% of the OC mass in the urban sites originates from cooking emissions. Aerosols from the urban area of Zurich presented a much higher PAH content, and benzo(a)pyrene equivalent concentrations sometimes exceeding the mandatory limit. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Urban NH3 concentrations were mapped in Barcelona (Spain) by means of passive samplers (dosimeters). Average NH3 levels were 9.5 μg m−3 in summer and 4.4 μg m−3 in winter, higher than those reported in other urban background sites in Europe, this being especially notable in summer. During this season, values were significantly higher at urban background than at traffic sites, probably indicating the impact of emissions from biological sources, such as humans, sewage systems and garbage containers. Thus, the volatilization of NH3 from the aerosol phase seems to be significant enough during summer to dominate over traffic emissions. Conversely, in winter levels were higher at traffic sites, suggesting a contribution from vehicle emissions. Indeed, NH3 levels decreased by 55% with increasing distance (50 m) to the direct emissions from traffic. A significant correlation between NH3 concentrations averaged for the different districts of the city and the number of waste containers per hm2 was also obtained, highlighting the necessity for controlling and reducing the emissions from garbage collection systems. The urban topography of the Barcelona historical city centre, characterised by narrow streets with a high population density, seemed to exert a strong influence on NH3 levels, with levels reaching up to 30 μg m−3 as a consequence of limited dispersion and ventilation conditions. The impact of the sewage system emissions was also detected with an increase of levels when measuring immediately above the source, even though further studies are required to evaluate the relevance of these emissions. Abstract: The extraction of sulphur produces a hematite-rich waste, known as roasted pyrite ash, which contains significant amounts of environmentally sensitive elements in variable concentrations and modes of occurrence. Whilst the mineralogy of roasted pyrite ash associated with iron or copper mining has been studied, as this is the main source of sulphur worldwide, the mineralogy, and more importantly, the characterization of submicron, ultrafine and nanoparticles, in coal-derived roasted pyrite ash remain to be resolved. In this work we provide essential data on the chemical composition and nanomineralogical assemblage of roasted pyrite ash. XRD, HR-TEM and FE-SEM were used to identify a large variety of minerals of anthropogenic origin. These phases result from highly complex chemical reactions occurring during the processing of coal pyrite of southern Brazil for sulphur extraction and further manufacture of sulphuric acid. Iron-rich submicron, ultrafine and nanoparticles within the ash may contain high proportions of toxic elements such as As, Se, U, among others. A number of elements, such as As, Cr, Cu, Co, La, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, Ti, Zn, and Zr, were found to be present in individual nanoparticles and submicron, ultrafine and nanominerals (e.g. oxides, sulphates, clays) in concentrations of up to 5%. The study of nanominerals in roasted pyrite ash from coal rejects is important to develop an understanding on the nature of this by-product, and to assess the interaction between emitted nanominerals, ultra-fine particles, and atmospheric gases, rain or body fluids, and thus to evaluate the environmental and health impacts of pyrite ash materials. Abstract: Several studies conducted in urban areas have pointed out that road dust resuspension contributes significantly to PM concentration levels. Street washing is one of the methods proposed to reduce resuspended road dust contributions to ambient PM concentrations. As resuspended particles are mainly found in the coarse mode, published studies investigating the effects of street washing have focused on PM10 size fraction. As the PM2.5 mass fraction of particles originating from mechanical abrasion processes may still be significant we conducted a study in order to evaluate the effects of street washing on the mitigation of resuspension of fine particles. The PM2.5 mass concentration data were examined and integrated with the occurrence of street washing activities. In addition, the effect of the meteorological variability, traffic flow and street washing activities, on ambient PM2.5 levels was evaluated by means of a multivariate regression model. The results revealed that traffic flow is the most important factor that controls PM2.5 hourly concentrations while street washing activities did not influence fine particle mass levels. Abstract: The abatement capacity of trace inorganic elements was studied in a large Pulverized Coal Combustion (PCC) power plant equipped with a wet limestone Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) system. High proportions of most elements were retained as fly ash as consequence of the efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator (ESP, 99.6% of fly ash) and slag (11%). The most volatile elements, such as S and F are retained by the FGD gypsum, and Cl by the filtered water; whereas the moderately volatile elements, As and B, are retained mainly by fly ash, reaching very high abatement efficiencies for these elements when considering the whole plant (>92%). Selenium and Hg are still retained by the whole system with relatively high proportions (89% and 67%); however a prominently proportion is emitted; Se (11%) and Hg (29%), attaining gaseous/PM rate at the emissions reaching 0.08 and 290, respectively. The gaseous emissions are below the limits according to the European directive 2001/80/EC for large combustion plants and the PRTR threshold values with the exception of Hg emissions and particulate Se, As, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Cr. Remediation actions to prevent and/or reduce the gaseous and PM emissions as well as the determination of leachable potential of trace inorganic pollutants retained in FGD gypsum, especially F in view of its disposal, are of significant relevance. Abstract: Background: The role of Saharan dust outbreaks on the relationship between particulate matter and daily mortality has recently been addressed in studies conducted in Southern Europe, although they have not given consistent results. Methods: We investigated the effects of coarse (PM10–2.5) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Madrid on total mortality during Saharan dust and non-dust days using a case-crossover design. Results: During Saharan dust days, an increase of 10mg/m3 of PM10–2.5 raised total mortality by 2.8% compared with 0.6% during non-dust days (P-value for interaction=0.0165). Conclusion: We found evidence of stronger adverse health effects of PM10–2.5 during Saharan dust outbreaks effects for impacted European populations, but not for PM2.5. Further research is needed to understand mechanisms by which Saharan dust increases risk of mortality. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The mobility of inorganic pollutants is of key concern for a range of industrial and engineering applications of fly ash produced during the combustion of lignite in power generation. This paper investigates the role that the geochemical features of lignite, the ash composition and the partitioning of elements during combustion play in determining leaching properties of lignite fired by-products. The work is based on surveys on three lignite-fired power plants in Greece. Calcium-rich ashes show a high abatement potential for SO2 and other gaseous pollutants. For most elements, the concentrations in the parent lignite and the ashes follow the same trend. Relative enrichments in Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, U, V, W, Zn fingerprint the regional and local geological settings of the lignite basins. The total and leachable concentrations of highly volatile elements are strongly influenced by the interaction with ubiquitous free lime. A broad array of elements is highly insoluble in alkaline ash, while a few oxyanionic-forming elements display substantial mobility. Their mode of occurrence in the parent lignite plays a primary role in the leaching of combustion ashes. The outcomes of this study may assist in addressing the impact of co-firing high ash or high Ca alternative fuels on the leaching properties of combustion by-products. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The primary aim of this study was to quantify the contribution of road dust to airborne particulate matter (PM10) and evaluate the effects of street washing on the mitigation of resuspension. With this purpose an intensive campaign was carried out in a heavily trafficked central road of Madrid (Spain) including PM10 sampling and chemical analysis. PM10 daily levels during dry, unwashed conditions were 2–15% higher than those present during the day after nightly street washing. However, this reduction is lower than the standard deviation of the PM10 measurements. The diurnal variation of PM10 revealed that a reduction in PM10 was noticeable only during the morning hours. The emission sources for the urban area of Madrid were resolved by means of a receptor model, Positive Matrix Factorization, PMF. The results showed that the main sources were vehicle emissions, road dust, secondary aerosol including sulphate and nitrate, and soil. Vehicle emissions and road dust were the major contributor to PM10 particle mass with similar average contributions of 31% and 29% respectively. The effect of street washing was also evaluated by examining the daily variation of the road dust source contribution between days with and without street washing. The mass contribution from the road dust source was ∼2 μg m−3 lower during the days that street washing was implemented with this corresponding to a reduction of 15% of its mass contribution during the days that the road surface was left untreated. Abstract: In summer 2009, emissions of trace gases and aerosols from several wildfires occurring in Portugal were sampled. A portable high-volume sampler was used to collect sequentially, on quartz fibre filters, coarse (PM2.5–10) and fine (PM2.5) smoke particles. Tedlar air sampling bags have been used for complementary chemical characterisation of the gaseous phase. The carbonaceous content (elemental and organic carbon, EC/OC) of particulate matter was analysed by a thermal-optical transmission technique. The levels of almost 50 elements were quantified by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The water-soluble ions were obtained by ion chromatography. Emission factors of species that are favoured by the smouldering phase (e.g. CO) were above the values reported in the literature for biomass burning in other ecosystems. The CO emission factors were 231 ± 117 g kg−1 biomass (dry basis) burned. Emissions of compounds that are promoted in fresh plumes and during the flaming phase, such as CO2, were generally lower than those proposed for savannah and tropical forest fires. The CO2 emission factors ranged from about 1000 to 1700 g kg−1. Total hydrocarbons, PM2.5, PM10 and OC presented variable emissions, but in general substantially higher than values reported for wildfires in African and Amazonian biomes. The emission factors obtained in Portugal were as follows (in g kg−1 biomass, dry basis): 6–350 for total hydrocarbons, 0.5–42 for PM2.5, 1–60 for PM10, and 0.2–42 for OC (in PM10). The organic carbon-to-elemental carbon ratios measured in the present study largely exceeded those obtained by other researchers. The aerosol mass was dominated by organic matter (OC/PM2.5 = 50 ± 18%, OC/PM2.5–10 = 36 ± 18%). The metal elements represented, on average, 1.23 and 0.91%, while the measured water-soluble ions accounted for 2.6 and 2.1% of the PM2.5 and PM2.5–10 mass, respectively. Carbonates accounted for 0.15–3.1% (average = 0.83%) of PM2.5–10. The dominant elements were B, Ti, Mn, Cu, Zn, Zr and Ba. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Phosphogypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), a by-product of phosphate-rock processing, contains high amounts of impurities such P2O5, F, radioactive elements, organic substances, secondary nanominerals, and ultrafine particles (UFP) enriched in metals and metalloids. In this study, we examine phosphogypsum (PG) collected from abandoned fertilizer industry facility in south Brazil (Santa Catarina state). The fragile nature of nanominerals and UFP assemblages from fertilizer industry systems required novel techniques and experimental approaches. The investigation of the geochemistry of complex nanominerals and UFP assemblages was a prerequisite to accurately assess the environmental and human health risks of contaminants and cost-effective chemical and biogeological remediation strategies. Particular emphasis was placed on the study and characterization of the complex mixed nanominerals and UFP containing potentially toxic elements. Nanometer-sized phases in PG were characterized using energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) images. The chemical composition and possible correlations with morphology of nanominerals and UFP, as well as aspects of nanominerals and UFP, are discussed in the context of human health exposure, as well as in relation to management of the nanominerals and UFP in PG environments.
