Abstract

Here we propose new structures which can be represented as metallocene molecules organized into a 2D hybrid structure with two carbon layers and metal atoms sandwiched between them. We called them 2D metallocene-like structures or metal-intercalated bilayer graphene allotropes inspired by MCp 2 structure. The Co and Fe metal atoms as filler between the carbon layers were considered. In addition to intriguing geometry, proposed structures show dynamical stability, which was studied by state-of-the-art computational techniques. The nature of metal-carbon bonding was determined and analyzed. Half-metallic properties were observed in the case of cobalt-containing structures. Localization of magnetic moments on individual cobalt atoms opens broad prospects for application in spintronics devices due to the shielding of a magnetic metal atom by the carbon network. Abstract

The PAMELA experiment is gathering data since 2006 on board the Resurs DK1 satellite (orbit with inclination 70.4°, the altitude 350-600km). The instrument consists magnetic spectrometer, silicon-tungsten imaging electromagnetic calorimeter, neutron detector and shower scintillator that gives possibility to measure electron and positron fluxes over wide energy range from hundreds MeVs to hundreds GeVs. Results of the experiment indicate the presence of a large flux of positron with respect to electrons in the CR spectrum above 10GeV. This excess might be originated through dark matter annihilation or in local astrophysical objects such as pulsars producing possible spatial and season variations. Electron and positron events have been analyzed searching for spatial and temporal variations from June 2006 till January 2014.

Abstract

Here we report targeted high-pressure synthesis of two novel high- T C hydride superconductors, P 6 3 /mmc- ThH 9 and F m 3 - m -ThH 10 , with the experimental critical temperatures (T C) of 146 K and 159–161 K and upper critical magnetic fields (μH C) 38 and 45 Tesla at pressures 170–175 Gigapascals, respectively. Superconductivity was evidenced by the observation of zero resistance and a decrease of T C under external magnetic field up to 16 Tesla. This is one of the highest critical temperatures that has been achieved experimentally in any compound, along with such materials as LaH 10 , H 3 S and HgBa 2 Ca x Cu 2 O 6+ z. Our experiments show that fcc -ThH 10 has stabilization pressure of 85 GPa, making this material unique among all known high- T C metal polyhydrides. Two recently predicted Th-H compounds, I4/mmm -ThH 4 (>86 GPa) and Cmc 2 1 - ThH 6 (86–104 GPa), were also synthesized. Equations of state of obtained thorium polyhydrides were measured and found to be in excellent agreement with the theoretical calculations. Abstract

Novel imidazopyrazine-based dyes of the D–A type, possessing (hetero)aryl electron-donating groups in the imidazole moiety, have been synthesized. Their photophysical properties have been investigated using absorption and emission spectral analyses, both in solution and in solid-state. All dyes exhibit strong emission solvatochromism (Δλ em = 146–201 nm) and possess quantum yields up to 0.28, depending on their molecular structure and solvent polarity. Meanwhile, fluorescence studies have shown that emission of all fluorophores is sensitive towards different nitroaromatic compounds, either in solutions or in a vapor phase. Thus, these compounds can be regarded as promising multifunctional chemosensors. Abstract

Abstract Nanocomposite VCN-Ag coatings with 10–11 at.% of Ag were obtained by pulsed DC magnetron co-sputtering of V and C (graphite) targets and simultaneous sputtering of Ag target and characterized as promising materials for wide temperature range tribological applications. The friction behavior of the Ag-doped coatings was studied during dynamic temperature ramp tribological tests in the range of 100–700 °C in comparison with their Ag-free counterparts. The sequence of phase transformations upon heating was determined using a combination of high-temperature in situ grazing incidence XRD and DSC/TGA analysis. In situ TEM heating to 450 °C was carried out to evaluate the thermal stability of VCN-Ag coatings. Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, and EDS were employed to compare the coating structure inside and outside of wear tracks after high-temperature tribological tests. The temperature dependence of Ag shear moduli and the shear moduli of two experimentally observed vanadium oxides, V 3 O 7 and V 6 O 13 , were obtained using DFT calculations to support and verify experimental observations. The obtained results indicated that the Ag-doped coatings exhibited a lower oxidation threshold. An observed significant drop in the friction coefficient of the VCN-Ag coatings in comparison with their Ag-free counterparts can be explained by (i) the surface self-oxidation initiated by Ag and the tribo-activated formation of AgVO 3 phase in the temperature range of 250–350 °C and (ii) the formation of Ag 0.4 V 2 O 5 phase and its tribo-activated melting above 650 °C. Highlights • We present an in situ TEM probing method to change the chirality of few-walled carbon nanotubes and correlate such changes with the electronic transport properties. • The chirality of carbon nanotubes was changed by programmed bias pulses. The chirality transitions of each carbon shell were characterized by nanobeam electron diffraction. Supported by molecular dynamics simulations, a preferred transition path through nucleation of Stone–Wales defects and propagation of (0, 1) type dislocations was revealed. • The changes of electronic transport properties were recorded by in situ TEM electrical measurements and metal-to-semiconductor transition was realized. • This method allows establishing the structure-properties relationship during dynamic processes at the atomic and/or molecular level. Abstract Physical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are closely related to the atomic structure, i.e. the chirality. It is highly desirable to develop a technique to modify their chirality and control the resultant transport properties. Herein, we present an in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) probing method to monitor the chirality transition and transport properties of individual few-walled CNTs. The changes of tube structure including the chirality are stimulated by programmed bias pulses and associated Joule heating. The chirality change of each shell is analyzed by nanobeam electron diffraction. Supported by molecular dynamics simulations, a preferred chirality transition path is identified, consistent with the Stone–Wales defect formation and dislocation sliding mechanism. The electronic transport properties are measured along with the structural changes, via fabricating transistors using the individual nanotubes as the suspended channels. Metal-to-semiconductor transitions are observed along with the chirality changes as confirmed by both the electron diffraction and electrical measurements. Apart from providing an alternative route to control the chirality of CNTs, the present work demonstrates the rare possibility of obtaining the dynamic structure-properties relationships at the atomic and molecular levels. The search for electrode materials for two-dimensional structures, particularly for semiconducting H-MoS 2 , is a significant problem for contemporary materials science. This stimulates interest in metastable structures, which motivates us to look at non-stoichiometric metastable states known as Berthollides. An unbiased evolutionary search for new two-dimensional structures in Mo-S system showed the presence of Mo 5 S 4 , Mo 3 S 4 , and MoS metastable structures (located near the decomposition line) in the low-sulfur area of phase diagram. The predicted novel Cm -Mo 3 S 4 phase exhibits metallic properties and dynamic stability confirmed by the calculation of phonon dispersion spectra. Its lattice parameters are similar to the semiconducting H-MoS 2 phase which makes it possible to use Cm -Mo 3 S 4 as a conducting contact in nanodevices based on MoS 2. A study of proposed H-MoS 2 / Cm -Mo 3 S 4 lateral heterostructures showed that in the contact region a transition to the conducting states of the H-MoS 2 edge atoms is observed, as well as the preservation of Cm -Mo 3 S 4 conducting properties. The main feature of Cm -Mo 3 S 4 is that it can be structurally obtained by a direct transition of H-MoS 2 monolayer with sulfur vacancies. As a result, the predicted Cm -Mo 3 S 4 phase is a promising candidate for conducting contacts in nanoelectronic device components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present our results of design of a new model of fullerite-based material with ultrahigh mechanical stiffness closely related with experimental data. In this study, we investigated the nature of enhanced mechanical characteristics (i.e. bulk modulus) and establish the relation between geometrical parameters of the model, which allows the estimations of potential conditions for fabrication of superhard material with outstanding mechanical properties. [Display omitted] • Fully sp3-hybridized carbon quasicrystal is proposed. • Band gap of hydrogenated and fluorinated quasicrystals are estimated to be 3.5 eV and over 4 eV, respectively. • Fluorinated quasicrystal has lower formation energy than hydrogenated one. • Diamane quasicrystal is mechanically stronger than AB-diamane. Here we propose the first two-dimensional carbon quasicrystal made entirely of sp 3-hybridized atoms, namely diamane quasicrystal. This nanostructure is based on incommensurate lattice of two graphene layers twisted by 30° with respect to each other (well-known graphene quasicrystal) with totally hydrogenated or fluorinated surfaces of bilayer graphene (similar to formation of AB-stacked diamane by means of applying high pressure treatment). We describe in detail the features of atomic structure appearing during the formation of quasicrystal. Thermodynamic stability, electronic and mechanical characteristics in comparison with both periodic approximants and AB-stacked diamanes via DFT and MD methods are studied and discussed. Proposed diamane quasicrystals exhibit unique mechanical properties: they are stiffer and more brittle than AB-stacked diamane. Our study shows that quasicrystalline diamane is a prospective material that opens a new way towards the synthesis of inorganic quasicrystals of various compositions with unique set of physical and chemical properties. Abstract

The present paper describes fabrication of Ag/BN nanoparticle hybrids by means of Ag ion implantation into the hollow BN nanoparticles (BNNPs) with a petal-like surface. The structural transformations occurring during Ag ion implantation into BNNPs are studied by low- and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high angle annular dark field scanning TEM (HAADF-STEM) paired with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy mapping. The experimental results are theoretically verified in the framework of the classical molecular dynamics (MD) method. Our results have demonstrated that by changing Ag ion energy in the range of 2–20 kV it is possible to selectively fabricate Ag/BNNP nanohybrids with crystalline or amorphous BNNP structures and various Ag NPs distributions over the BNNP thicknesses. 6-Styryl-5-(het)arylfurazano[3,4- b ]pyrazines have been obtained by novel C–H functionalization, which is a particular case of the nucleophilic substitution of hydrogen (S N H ). The process is initiated by the Michael addition of morpholine at the C C double bond of β-nitrostyrenes, and the subsequent addition of the generated carbanion to C-6 of 5-(het)arylfurazano[3,4- b ]pyrazines, followed by elimination of nitrous acid and morpholine. It has been shown that in this case, only β-nitrostyrenes bearing electron-rich substituents on the aromatic ring are involved in arylalkenylation of furazano[3,4- b ]pyrazines. Abstract

Abstract: We present a simple design for an intracavity doubled unidirectional traveling-wave diode-pumped Yb:YAG laser consisting of only two intracavity components: an Yb:YAG gain medium and a KTP doubling crystal. An output power of more than 40 mW at 515.5 nm was observed. By using a temperature tuned KTP-based birefringent crystal, we obtained a tuning of about 1 nm around 1031 nm with a green output through the tuning range. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
