Abstract: Gold-catalyzed reactions of 3-silyloxy-1,5-enynes in the presence of sterically demanding alcohols afford 4-acylcyclopentenes. The cascade process most likely proceeds through a 6-endo-dig carbocyclization and subsequent pinacol-type rearrangement. Studies that define scope and limitations of the cyclization–migration strategy are also described. An alternative cascade yields highly substituted aryls through an unprecedented cyclization–fragmentation pathway. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: New liquid crystals with a pentafluorosulfanyl function as their polar terminal group were prepared and fully characterized. The synthetic key step was the triethyl borane-catalyzed addition of SF5Br to a suitable olefin precursor, followed by dehydrobromination. The most interesting characteristic of the new materials is their combination of high polarity (Δɛ) with very low birefringence (Δn), which is of particular importance for LCDs for mobile applications. Negative differential conductance (NDC) seen in the drain current saturation region is typically attributed to self-heating effects in GaN HEMTs. In this paper, it is demonstrated that NDC is due to trap states in the buffer resulting from poor carrier confinement in the channel during saturation which leads to stray electrons exiting the channel and becoming trapped. Substrate bias testing has been used to confirm that severe current collapse occurs when those electrons are forced to the surface, and that NDC occurs when the carriers are forced to the buffer. In addition to this, pulsed I-V characterization is performed among other tests to isolate the cause of NDC in the saturation region, which effectively eliminated trapping mechanisms that lead to gate- and drain-lag from contributing to NDC.
