34. Biomechanical properties of a 3D printing polymer for provisional restorations and artificial teeth.

Abstract

To characterize a resin-based polymer used for 3D printing (3D) provisional restorations and artificial teeth by evaluating relevant material's properties (flexural strength (σf), elastic modulus (E), water sorption (Wsp) and solubility (Wsl)) and biocompatibility, and comparing to a bis-acryl composite resin (BA) and a heat-cured acrylic resin (AR). Structures were fabricated from 3D, BA and AR. Bar-shaped specimens (n = 30) were submitted to three-point flexure (in 37ºC water and constant displacement rate: 1 ± 0.3 mm/min) until fracture to calculate σf and E. Additional specimens (n = 30) were aged in 37ºC distilled water for six months before testing for σf. Disc-shaped specimens (n = 5) were dried in desiccators and oven until weight stability was reached, then they were immersed in distilled water for seven days, weighed and submitted to the drying process to obtain Wsp and Wsl. SRB and MTT assays were used to evaluate biocompatibility. Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal Wallis, Student-Newman-Keuls (α =.05), and Weibull distribution. ANOVA and Tukey (α =.05) were used to evaluate the biocompatibility data. 3D structures showed higher σf than AR after aging. The BA showed the lowest values for σf and E, at baseline and after aging. All materials showed Wsp and Wsl values within the recommended standard values. AR structures showed lower cell viability (71.9%) than 3D (92.9%) and BA (90.8%) when using the SRB test. No difference was found when using MTT (p >.05). The evaluated polymer-based 3D printing material showed adequate biomechanical behavior for using as a provisional restoration and artificial teeth. • 3D printed structures showed higher flexural strength than heat-cured acrylic resin structures after aging. • Heat-cured acrylic resin structures showed lower cell viability (71.9%) than 3D printed structures (92.9%) (SRB test). • The evaluated polymer-based 3D printing material showed adequate biomechanical behavior for using as a provisional restoration and artificial teeth. Abstract

Most urban canopy models adopt the two-dimensional (infinitely long) street canyon as the basic unit to represent the city texture. This paper presents a new urban canopy model, the 3DUCM (three-dimensional urban canopy model), which accounts for every single building of the city to determine the air temperature and heat fluxes involved in the surface energy budget. 3DUCM has been coupled with the Colorado State University Mesoscale Model, and an idealized city has been considered as case study. Among the main results, it is shown that the air temperature simulated by 3DUCM within the canopy is lower compared to that calculated using the two-dimensional approach, mainly because of crossroads modelling. The new model is suitable for predicting the temperature field down to the building scale and it is potentially easy to apply to realistic scenarios, for which the actual shape, orientation and constructing material properties of every single building constituting the canopy can be taken into account.

Abstract

The Gobi Desert of southern Mongolia is home to an incredibly rich record of dinosaurs and other vertebrate fossils from the latest Cretaceous Period. Together, more than a dozen sites in several basins have produced one of the richest palaeofaunas known from this interval anywhere in the world. Most of this diversity has been recovered from the fluvial deposits of the Nemegt Formation. Despite historic and ongoing research in southern Mongolia, accurate maps and geological data for the main fossil sites are still lacking, limiting our ability to investigate how local palaeoecological dynamics influenced Nemegt taxa, their geographic distribution, and their evolutionary patterns. One of these sites, Guriliin Tsav, has produced more than a hundred significant fossil specimens to date, but still remains one of the lesser known Nemegt localities. In part this is because many expeditions have instead focused on the nearby Bügiin Tsav, one of the largest and richest localities for the Nemegt Formation. To address this gap, a project was initiated in 2018 to produce a high-resolution topographic map of Guriliin Tsav using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), and consequently, to plot the geographic and stratigraphic distributions of palaeontological resources on this map. In so doing, we also collected stratigraphic and taphonomic data from the area, allowing for the first detailed palaeoecological interpretation of Guriliin Tsav and a comparison with other localities of southern Mongolia. Here we present the results of this project, and also discuss new topographic and stratigraphic data from Bügiin Tsav. This sheds new light into the temporal and geographic distribution of vertebrate taxa in the latest Cretaceous of Mongolia. • We provide the first high-resolution maps of Guriliin Tsav, a rich Gobi Desert fossil locality. • We comprehensively describe the stratigraphy and taphonomy of the site and its impact on fossil resources. • We tabulate more than 100 fossil occurrences into the first detailed documentation of the fauna at Guriliin Tsav, showing distinct differences from sites further southeast. • We document Baruungoyot-like aeolian beds within the middle Nemegt Formation, challenging assertions that these represent sequential time intervals. • We demonstrate how channel architecture at Bugiin Tsav and Guriliin Tsav corresponds to spatial distribution of fossils.
