Disordered eating behaviors are a current public health concern since their progression can lead to the development of a full criteria eating disorder. Sensitization to repeated intake of high energy density (HED) foods is associated with excess weight gain over time, but less is known about relationships with assessments of disordered eating. Thus, this study aims to understand how disordered eating behaviors refunlate to the influence of the food environment and sensitization. 163 adolescents – 50 % female and 13.2 mean age – were followed for 24 months. Sensitization was assessed by comparing the relative reinforcing value (RRV) of HED food at baseline and after two weeks of daily intake; sensitization was defined as RRV of food after repeated intake. Study participants also completed the EDE-Q, and Power of Food Scale (PFS). We conducted multivariate general linear models to examine these associations. Sensitization status and PFS scores at baseline were positively associated with EDE-Q subscale scores cross-sectionally, but not longitudinally, at baseline and 24 months. We found that sensitization to HED food and higher susceptibility to food cues relates to increased disordered eating behaviors and both at baseline and at 24-months. These findings suggest that sensitization to repeated HED food intake and the food environment might be a risk factor for later engagement in disordered eating behaviors. Peer victimization, a high body mass index (BMI), and disordered eating behavior are all considered to be major health concerns afflicting today's youth. We bring together evidence from epidemiological, longitudinal, and meta-analytic research to propose a theoretical model of how peer victimization relates to psychopathology, which in turn, leads to misguided attempts to alter physical appearance through disordered eating behavior, and highlight how the pathway may vary as a function of BMI and gender. Specifically, we argue that, as a result of being victimized by peers: (1) overweight adolescents will be at high risk of psychological dysfunction and disordered eating behavior (particularly binge eating), and the effect will be stronger in girls; (2) average weight adolescents will be at high risk of psychological dysfunction and disordered eating behavior (particularly binge eating and bulimic symptoms), and the effect will be stronger in girls; and (3) underweight adolescents will be at high risk of psychological dysfunction and disordered eating behavior (particularly to increase muscle mass), and the effect will be stronger in boys. The identification and testing of comprehensive theoretical models may be beneficial for the targeting of interventions for children and adolescents affected by repeated aggressive behavior. Abstract: Emerging evidence signifies the co-occurrence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with clinical and sub-threshold disordered eating behaviors. However, many existing studies have assessed this co-occurrence among inpatient or intensive outpatient populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the co-occurrence of ADHD with clinical eating disorders and disordered eating behaviors in a nationally representative sample via a secondary data analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n=4,862; 2,243 males; 2,619 females). Results reveal that females have higher rates of co-occurrence of ADHD and diagnosed eating disorders than males (1.05% vs. 0.20%, p<.01). When controlling for age and race, ADHD predicted diagnosed eating disorders in females (incidence rate ratio (IRR): 2.06; 95% CI: 1.09–3.88; p<.05), but did not predict diagnosed eating disorders in males. With regard to disordered eating behaviors, when controlling for age, gender, and race, ADHD significantly predicted disordered eating behaviors (OR: 1.82; 95% CI: 1.21–2.74). When stratifying by type of disordered eating behavior, ADHD predicted binging and/or purging behavior (OR: 2.86; 95% CI: 1.78–4.61), but not restrictive behaviors. Implications of study findings pertain to both secondary/targeted prevention efforts in addition to tertiary prevention via patient-specific treatment plans. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The purpose of the current study was to examine whether body dissatisfaction and body image flexibility would be uniquely and significantly associated with disordered eating behavior. In addition, the study examined if body mass index (BMI) moderated the relationships between each of the body image related variables and disordered eating. Two-hundred-fifty-eight female participants completed the web-based survey. Body dissatisfaction and body image flexibility were significantly related to disordered eating behavior, after controlling for ethnicity and BMI, and BMI moderated the relation between body image flexibility and disordered eating. Specifically, for those with low BMI, greater body image flexibility was associated with reduced disordered eating behavior. Body image flexibility was not associated with disordered eating behavior among those with average or high BMI. These results suggest that greater body image flexibility may serve as a protective factor against disordered eating behaviors for those with low BMI. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Eating disorders are psychiatric disorders that have a significant negative impact on a person's physical and mental health. Emotional intelligence (EI) has been hypothesized to be negatively associated with disordered eating behaviors, however previous research on this hypothesis has shown contradictory results. Therefore, the current meta-analysis aimed at exploring the relationship between EI and disordered eating behaviors based on previous studies. Analysis of 20 studies using a three-level random-effects meta-analysis model revealed an overall negative association between EI and eating disorders, r = −0.17 (95% CI: −0.25, −0.08; p <.001), with a small effect size. Furthermore, subsequent moderator analyses revealed that the type of emotional intelligence (trait EI versus ability EI) helped explain the heterogeneity of the previous findings, with the association between trait EI and disordered eating (r = −0.23; 95% CI: −0.33, −0.13; p <.001) being significantly greater than the association between ability EI and disordered eating (r = −0.12; 95% CI: −0.22,. -0.03; p =.010), indicating that trait EI was more closely associated with disordered eating than ability EI. Overall, this study confirms the relationship between EI and disordered eating behaviors, suggesting that individuals with higher EI are less likely to have disordered eating behaviors. Objective: To investigate emotional dysregulation and psychiatric comorbidities associated with DEB-risk in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).Methods: A total of 75 children with T1DM aged between 8 and 19 were evaluated by K-SADS-PL to assess psychiatric diagnosis. DEB-risk was evaluated via Diabetes Eating Problem Survey-Revised (DEPS-R). Besides, all participants completed the Childhood Depression Inventory (CDI), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI).Results: DEPS-R-positive (≥20) was detected in 28% of the participants. The only diagnostic difference was a significantly higher frequency of ED in DEPS-R-positive than DEPS-R-negative (OR = 8.5, CI = 1.94-37.1, p = .004). DEPS-R-positive cases had significantly higher scores of the CDI, STAI, DERS, and the subscales of Goals, Impulse, and Strategies of DERS (CDI U = 266.500, p = .001; STAI U = 288.500,p = .001; DERS U = 229.000, p = .001, Goals U = 283.500, p = .008, Impulse U = 274.000, p = .005, Strategies U = 281.500, p = .007). In stepwise linear regression analysis, STAI-state and DERS scores significantly determined DEB-risk (STAI: β = 0.363, t(60) = 2.33, p = .02, DERS: β = 0.240, t(60) = 4.14, p < .001).Conclusion: This cross-sectional study showed that DEPS-R-positive cases have an 8.5-fold increased risk for ED. DEPS-R-positive ones have difficulties in regulating their emotions and they are incapable of accessing emotion regulation strategies, engaging in goal-directed behavior while under difficult emotions, and impulse control. It can be beneficial for child psychiatrists to screen first for ED in DEPS-R-positive cases who are referred by child endocrinologist. They should also take into consideration anxiety levels and problems in emotion dysregulation in the DEPS-R-positive cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
