Using calves as stimuli the impact of Synchro-mate-B on the estrus of Zebu cows was studied.

Aim: To describe the characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of paraneoplastic autoimmune encephalitis in patients with new-onset status epilepticus. Materials and methods: The neuroimaging and clinical data of five patients with paraneoplastic autoimmune encephalitis debuting as status epilepticus were retrospectively reviewed. All patients met the criteria for definite paraneoplastic syndrome and all underwent brain MRI during the status epilepticus episode or immediately after recovery. Results: All patients showed hyperintense lesions on T2-weighted imaging (WI) involving the limbic structures, specifically the hippocampus. Three of them showed additional extra-limbic areas of signal abnormalities. The areas of T2 hyperintensity were related to the electroclinical onset of the seizures. In three patients, various techniques were used to study cerebral perfusion, such as arterial spin labelling MRI, single photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT) and 2-[18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG)-positron-emission tomography (PET). Arterial spin labelling showed hyperperfusion overlapping the inflammatory lesions, whereas PET and SPECT disclosed increased perfusion and increased metabolism. The subtraction SPECT co-registered to MRI (SISCOM) demonstrated hypermetabolism outside the areas of encephalitis. After clinical recovery, follow-up MRI revealed the development of atrophy in the initially affected hippocampus. Two patients who had recurrent paraneoplastic autoimmune encephalitis manifesting as status epilepticus showed new T2 lesions involving different structures. Conclusion: The presence of limbic and extra-limbic T2 signal abnormalities in new-onset status epilepticus should suggest the diagnosis of a paraneoplastic syndrome, especially when status epilepticus is refractory to treatment. Abstract: 2,5-Dihydroxy-3,4-dimethoxyphenanthrene (1), fimbriol-A (2), nudol (3), gymnopusin (4) and erianthridin (5) isolated from Maxillaria densa provoked a concentration-dependent inhibition of the spontaneous contractions of the rat ileum with potencies comparable to papaverine. In order to establish the mode of action of stilbenoids 1–5, their effect on the contractions induced by different spasmogens (histamine, barium chloride and l-NAME) was investigated. In general, the results suggested that the relaxant activity of the products does not involve a direct nitrergic or antihistaminergic mode of action or an interference with calcium influx into the smooth muscle cells. In Mexico and globally, organs and/or tissues donated from deceased people are insufficient to cover the demand for transplants. In 2014, a rate of 3.6 organ donors per million in habitants was recorded; this is reflected in the transplants performed, including heart transplantation, with a rate of 0.4 per million population. According to the legal framework of Mexico, the National Transplant Center is responsible for coordinating National Subsystem of donation and transplantation, and one of its functions is to integrate and backup information regarding donation and transplantation through the National Transplant Registry System. In July 2015, 45 people were registered in the database of patients waiting for a heart transplant, of which 34.61% were female recipients and 65.39% male. Distribution and allocation processes are a key element to provide a fair distribution for those patients waiting for that organ; thus the creation of an electronic tool is proposed, one that aims to support the decision of the donation and/or transplants coordination committee by providing the necessary elements to make this process more efficient. A total of ten extracts from different parts of eight medicinal plants that are used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, were evaluated to determine their spasmolytic action on in vitro isolated rat ileum. Abstract: To evaluate the effect of two supplementary diets to determine the consequence on productive and reproductive performance in heifers (Bos indicus × Bos taurus) averaging between 24 and 36 months of age and grazing tropical pastures, two trials were conducted. Thirty animals (initial BW 325.1±33.6kg) were divided in two groups in the initial study: supplemented (SG) and control (CG); SG received a concentrate (5.5% CP and 2.85 Mcal/kg of DE dry matter basis) at 1% of body weight (BW). In the second study, 45 heifers (initial BW 332.6±29.3kg) were assigned in two treatments, with the same amount of supplement (1% BW) but with a greater nutrient content (13% CP and 3.15Mcal/kg of DE). The proportion of animals with a corpus luteum at the end of each study was greater in the supplemented groups (P <0.05). Ovarian follicular dynamics was similar between groups in the first study, but in the second study there were more heifers in the SG group with follicles larger than 9mm in diameter (P <0.05). Pregnancy rate was similar for SG and CG (P >0.05). The response to a regimen of estrous synchronization in both trials was numerically superior in the SG group. No differences were observed in the length of estrus. Daily gain and body condition score were similar for supplemented and control groups (0.27 compared with −0.06 in the first study and 0.90kg compared with 0.60 in the second study, respectively). Dietary supplementation improved the number of animals initiating estrous cycles and the expression of estrus when compared with unsupplemented control heifers. The dietary regimens imposed in these studies appear to be an adequate for the management of growing heifers destined to a reproductive program. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Through a transrectal ultrasonography (Aloka SSD 500 microplus equipment, linear transducer of 7.5MHz) a total of 267 observations were performed in a group of 50 females mainly Bos indicus, raised under humid tropical conditions and pregnant from day 20 every other day until day 40 post-artificial insemination (AI). The objective was to measure the size of the amniotic vesicle and the longitudinal and transversal axis of the embryo, to determine the day in which it is possible to measure this structure and detect the heart contractions in the screened embryos. The accuracy in identifying the amniotic vesicle was 60% (12/20) on day 20 of the first screening with embryos having an average length of 0.44±0.20cm. Accuracy in detecting the embryo was 66.6 and 100% between days 20 and 24 post-breeding, respectively. The mean length of the embryos on day 20 was of 0.20±0.07cm and the transversal shape had a mean length of 0.07±0.02cm. The accuracy of detecting heart contractions was 50% (9/18) on day 24 post-breeding and for day 26 the accuracy was 100%. At the end of the screening (day 40), embryos had means of 1.92±0.24 (longitudinal) and 0.85±0.11cm (transverse). The embryo can be detected from day 24 post-AI and the heart contractions from day 26 with 100% reliability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of alternating bulls between a single and a multiple sire mating (MSM) program on the reproductive performance of suckled Zebu cows raised under range conditions in the humid tropics of Costa Rica. Multiparous Zebu cows (n=94) suckling calves were distributed between two experimental trials (A and B) consisting of 47 animals each. A single sire mating (SSM) system was alternated weekly with a MSM system with three bulls. This period lasted for 8 weeks. To facilitate estrous expression, four cows were strategically synchronized (estrus-stimulated) in alternate weeks. Courtship predominated over mounting under non-stimulated estrus, for each mounting performed an average of 6.0 and 6.3 courtship activities were recorded in the SSM and MSM, respectively. Under the influence of strategic synchronization corresponding values were 3.9 and 4.2 in the SSM and MSM, respectively (P>0.05). Blood samples for progesterone evaluation were taken twice weekly. All cows in trial A were in anestrus at the start of the study. By second week, 5 out of the 47 cows had initiated estrous cycles and by the third week six were pregnant. In contrast in trial B, 9 out of 47 had initiated estrous cycles before interacting with the bulls and on week 3, only two females had become pregnant and three had initiated estrous cycles. Significant differences were found in the cumulative percentage of cows pregnant between trials A and B (P<0.05). Even though these results occurred, the rotation of the bulls (one or three), or the type of cows (estrus-stimulated or not) did not influence the results in this study. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In recent years, in-vitro skin models for chemical hazard identification have been developed. Most of them consist only of human keratinocytes, neglecting the contribution of other skin constituents. Cultures containing the dermal and epidermal component provide an attractive system to investigate, in a more realistic model, toxicological responses, which represents a distinct advantage over keratinocytes-based models that do not mimic faithfully the in vivo environment. This study aimed to validate dermo-epidermal organotypic cultures (ORGs) as a platform to perform irritation and corrosion tests. Skin models were constructed by seeding keratinocytes on fibroblast-containing fibrin gels. After 21 days, the ORGs were evaluated histologically, and the irritant and corrosion potential was determined by means of viability measurements (MTT assay) and cytokine release, according to 431 and 439 OECD tests guidelines. Skin models showed similar histological characteristics to native skin and were able to classify different substances with high accuracy, showing their applicability to skin irritation and corrosion tests. Although cytokines release seems to be chemical-dependent, a tendency was observed, leading to the improvement of the prediction capacity. Nevertheless, further studies should be done to reduce variability in order to increase prediction capacity. • As general mediators in injury, IL 6 and IL 8 can be a good indicator of irritation. • Most of released cytokines are likely to be chemical- and model-specific. • ORGs fulfilled the OECD performance standards. • ORGs are a useful tool for chemical hazard identification.
