The puma (Puma concolor) is distributed over most vegetation types and elevation ranges, but is still sensitive to habitat loss and human persecution. Due to its large spatial requirements, pumas must persist in human-modified landscapes, where vegetation cover and prey availability can limit its occurrence. Few studies have assessed the suite of factors that may influence carnivore persistence in deforestation frontiers such as the Dry Chaco. We explored the influence of landscape structure, native prey availability, and local anthropogenic proxies on puma occupancy in Argentine Dry Chaco agroecosystems through a single-season occupancy framework based on camera-trap surveys. We used the results to predict puma occupancy for the ecoregion. Woody cover and the proportion of pasture within the surrounding matrix influenced puma occupancy: in areas with moderate to little woody cover, puma occupancy was negatively influenced by the proportion of pasture relative to cropland. Predicted puma occupancy probability was very high throughout half of the ecoregion. Our results corroborate the landscape-scale importance of woody cover for the puma in the Dry Chaco. However, the negative relation between puma occupancy and pasture dominance in areas with little woody cover could be suggesting potential negative interactions with humans, or seasonal variations in environmental condictions and resource availability that should be further explored. Abstract Background Previous research suggested that vigilance may moderate the functioning of other attentional components. However, vigilance is usually neglected when comparing the attentional functioning between groups of clinical and/or healthy participants. New method We combined data from several studies using the Attention Network Test for Interactions and Vigilance (ANTI-V), which includes a vigilance measure plus phasic alertness, orienting, and executive control scores. We estimated, for the first time, the reliability of the vigilance performance indices in the ANTI-V, by analyzing split-half correlations of 10,000 permutations of the trials. In addition, we tested whether a different attentional functioning would be found across the group of healthy participants varying in their vigilance performance, by using a considerably larger sample size (226 participants) than previous studies. Results Vigilance indices were the most reliable among the different attentional scores. Regression models show an inverse relationship between vigilance and phasic alertness and executive control. Comparison with existing methods No previous study has analysed the reliability of the vigilance performance indices in the ANTI-V. In comparison with other ANT variations, the ANTI-V provides a reliable measure of vigilance together with the typical phasic alertness, orienting and executive control scores. In addition, we provide estimates, based on a large sample size, of the magnitude of the link between vigilance and other attentional functions. Conclusions When assessing the multiple functions of attention, the current study highlights the importance of measuring vigilance, which may modulate the functioning of other attentional components, such as phasic alertness or executive control. Groundwater is an essential resource for water supply. For this reason, it is necessary to integrate and harmonise efforts to protect groundwater quality with socio-economic activities and existing land-use patterns in any given region, as well as complying with the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive. In addition, land management seeks to coordinate and harmonise policies with regional impacts. Water—as a public good and an essential resource for the development of life and the evolution of populations—needs to become one of the main pillars of management for a variety of regional policies. Therefore, water resources planning does not make sense without firstly considering forecasted land management patterns. The objective of this work is to standardize the process of managing the supply systems and prove their quality by certification. This will require guaranteeing the sustainable management and obtaining the certificate. During this long process, there may be complications that prevent achievement of the ultimate objective. For this, it is necessary to promote a standardization tool, which will value the efforts of the various agencies involved in the protection and management of groundwater used for human consumption in achieving sustainable management of water resources. Objectives The goal of this study was to determine the functional impact of paradoxical low-gradient aortic stenosis (PLGAS) and clarify whether the relevance of the valvular obstruction is related to baseline flow. Background Establishing the significance of PLGAS is particularly challenging. Methods Twenty symptomatic patients (77 ± 6 years of age; 17 female subjects) with PLGAS (mean gradient 28 ± 6 mm Hg; aortic valve area 0.8 ± 0.1 cm 2 ; ejection fraction 66 ± 7%) underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing combined with right-heart catheterization and Doppler echocardiographic measurements. Results Aortic valve area increased by 84 ± 23% (p < 0.001) and, in 70% of subjects, it reached values >1.0 cm 2 at peak exercise. Stroke volume index and blood pressure increased by 83 ± 56% and 26 ± 16%, respectively (both p < 0.0001). Peak oxygen consumption inversely correlated with the rate of increase in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) (PCWP slope: R = –0.61; p = 0.004). In turn, the PCWP slope was determined by changes in the valvular and vascular load but not by the rest of the indices of aortic stenosis. The functional impact of PLGAS was also not related to baseline flow. Agreement between Doppler echocardiography and the Fick technique was good up to intermediate workload. Conclusions In symptomatic patients with PLGAS, the capacity to dynamically reduce vascular and valvular loads determines the effect of exercise on PCWP, which, in turn, conditions the functional status. A critically fixed valvular obstruction may not be the main mechanism of functional impairment in a large proportion of patients with PLGAS. The biosynthesis of endogenous brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has thus far been examined in neurons where it is expressed at very low levels, in an activity-dependent fashion. In humans, BDNF has long been known to accumulate in circulating platelets, at levels far higher than in the brain. During the process of blood coagulation, BDNF is released from platelets, which has led to its extensive use as a readily accessible biomarker, under the assumption that serum levels may somehow reflect brain levels. To identify the cellular origin of BDNF in platelets, we established primary cultures of megakaryocytes, the progenitors of platelets, and we found that human and rat megakaryocytes express the BDNF gene. Surprisingly, the pattern of mRNA transcripts is similar to neurons. In the presence of thapsigargin and external calcium, the levels of the mRNA species leading to efficient BDNF translation rapidly increase. Under these conditions, pro-BDNF, the obligatory precursor of biologically active BDNF, becomes readily detectable. Megakaryocytes store BDNF in α-granules, with more than 80% of them also containing platelet factor 4. By contrast, BDNF is undetectable in mouse megakaryocytes, in line with the absence of BDNF in mouse serum. These findings suggest that alterations of BDNF levels in human serum as reported in studies dealing with depression or physical exercise may primarily reflect changes occurring in megakaryocytes and platelets, including the ability of the latter to retain and release BDNF. Abstract: An easy and accurate method for the determination of 210Pb and 210Po in water using 210Po spontaneous deposition onto a silver disk is proposed and assessed for its detection capabilities according to the ISO Guide for the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM) and ISO Standard 11929-7 concerning the evaluation of the characteristic limits for ionizing radiation measurements. The method makes no assumption on the initial values of the activity concentrations of 210Pb, 210Bi and 210Po in the sample to be analyzed, and is based on the alpha spectrometric measurement of 210Po in two different aliquots: the first one measured five weeks after the sampling date to ensure radioactive equilibrium between 210Pb and 210Bi and the second after a sufficient time for the ingrowth of 210Po from 210Pb to be significant. As shown, for a recommended time interval of seven months between 210Po measurements, the applicability of the proposed method is limited to water samples with a 226Ra to 210Pb activity ratio C Ra/C Pb≤4, as usual in natural waters. Using sample and background counting times of 24h and 240h, respectively, the detection limit of the activity concentration of each radionuclide at the sampling time for a 1L sample typically varies between 0.7 and 16mBqL−1 for 210Pb in water samples with an initial activity of 210Po in the range 0–200mBqL−1, and between 0.6 and 8.5mBqL−1 for 210Po in water samples with an initial activity of 210Pb in the same range. Abstract: In Chile, upwellings occur periodically along the coasts, resuspending metals from the seafloor and reintroducing them to the food web. Chilean blue mussels, Mytilus chilensis, accumulate these toxic compounds and show high concentrations of cadmium. An in vitro simulated digestion method has been applied to specimens of M. chilensis previously contaminated with 109Cd, to measure the bioaccessibility of cadmium for humans. The effects of the cooking process on the cadmium content of this species and on the resulting change in dietary bioaccessibility have also been evaluated. While cooking resulted in an increase in cadmium concentration in mussel flesh, cadmium remaining in the cooked flesh was also significantly less bioaccessible than cadmium occurring in the raw tissue. Estimations made in this study show that the intake of Cd from mussels by the Chilean population does not exceed the toxicological reference values established by the FAO/WHO; consequently, a health risk situation is not indicated. Abstract: The Chilean blue mussel (Mytilus chilensis, Hupe 1854) represents the most important bivalve exploited along the Chilean coast and is a major food source for the Chilean population. Unfortunately, local fish and shellfish farming face severe problems as a result of bioaccumulation of toxic trace metals into shellfishes. Blue mussels collected along the Chilean coasts contain levels of Cd above the regulatory limits for human consumption. In this study, we examined the bioaccumulation, depuration and organ distribution of Cd in the M. chilensis, from 109Cd-labelled bulk seawater and from feeding with 109Cd-labelled algae. The uptake of 109Cd via seawater displayed a simple exponential kinetic model suggesting that cadmium activity tends to reach an equilibrium value of 1.838±0.175ngg−1 (mean±asymptotic standard error, p <0.001) after 78±9 days. The depuration rate for 109Cd accumulated via seawater was slow, with only 21% of the total 109Cd accumulated in the whole mussel being eliminated after 52 days. Total elimination of Cd in mussels was adequately described by a double component kinetic model, in which the biological half-life for the long-lived component represents more than 6 months. In contrast, depuration after radiolabelled food uptake was fast, reaching only 20% of retention in 10 days. This knowledge of the long half-life of cadmium accumulated via seawater as well as the non-negligible level of cadmium accumulated into the shells is relevant to the management of Cd levels in this species and the refinement of detoxification processes in order to comply with authorized Cd levels. Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate the contribution of preoperative breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRM) as an adjunct to mammography in assessing extent of pure ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and to relate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings to histopathological features. A retrospective analysis was conducted of 86 histologically proven cases of pure DCIS of the breast. Two experienced radiologists with knowledge of clinical and histopathological findings at the time of the review evaluated mammographic and preoperative MRI results by consensus. Compared to histopathology, mammography or MRM alone underestimated DCIS extent in 18.6% and 31.4% of cases, respectively. When both imaging modalities were considered, DCIS extent was underestimated in 8% of cases. Combined use of mammography and MRM revealed good agreement with histopathology to assess DCIS extent (κ=0.439; P<0.001). MR enhancement of DCIS was related to histologic size (P=0.011). Mammography is more accurate than MRM in assessing cancer extent of pure DCIS, but combined use of both imaging techniques leads to improved accuracy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Meat high-hydrostatic pressure treatment causes severe decolouration, preventing its commercialisation due to consumer rejection. Novel procedures involving product freezing plus low-temperature pressure processing are here investigated. Room temperature (20°C) pressurisation (650MPa/10min) and air blast freezing (−30°C) are compared to air blast freezing plus high pressure at subzero temperature (−35°C) in terms of drip loss, expressible moisture, shear force, colour, microbial quality and storage stability of fresh and salt-added beef samples (Longissimus dorsi muscle). The latter treatment induced solid water transitions among ice phases. Fresh beef high pressure treatment (650MPa/20°C/10min) increased significantly expressible moisture while it decreased in pressurised (650MPa/−35°C/10min) frozen beef. Salt addition reduced high pressure-induced water loss. Treatments studied did not change fresh or salt-added samples shear force. Frozen beef pressurised at low temperature showed L, a and b values after thawing close to fresh samples. However, these samples in frozen state, presented chromatic parameters similar to unfrozen beef pressurised at room temperature. Apparently, freezing protects meat against pressure colour deterioration, fresh colour being recovered after thawing. High pressure processing (20°C or −35°C) was very effective reducing aerobic total (2-log10 cycles) and lactic acid bacteria counts (2.4-log10 cycles), in fresh and salt-added samples. Frozen+pressurised beef stored at −18°C during 45 days recovered its original colour after thawing, similarly to just-treated samples while their counts remain below detection limits during storage. Abstract: The residual stress, RS, profiles in a 6061Al-15vol.% SiCw composite and in its unreinforced alloy have been determined by synchrotron radiation diffraction, SRD. The high spatial resolution achieved by this technique has allowed resolving the spatial dependence of all three principal components of the RS field with the sample radius. The micro and macro stress have been successfully separated revealing the different distribution along the sample cross section as a consequence of their different nature. All details about software and hardware architecture are provided, proving that it is possible to develop a flexible, versatile and competitive monitoring system just using available Open Source tools. In addition, the authors make a detailed comparison between the proposed IoT solution and conventional SCADA-based monitoring systems, describing all benefits and drawbacks of conventional SCADAs and modern IoT systems and proposing solutions in order to overcome the identified weak points of the newest IoT-based monitoring systems. • Silvopastures can reconcile food production and carbon storage. • Silvopastures retain two thirds of the carbon stored by intact vegetation. • Tree density decreases through time, particularly when initial levels are higher. • Carbon storage in trees decreases by 12 % after each woody encroachment control event. • Ranchers express concern about tree loss but prioritize encroachment control. In dry woodland regions, silvopastures have emerged as a promising option to balance cattle production, carbon storage and biodiversity. However, one of the major challenges in these systems, particularly when implemented in a matrix of natural vegetation, is the preservation of tree populations in the face of management actions implemented by ranchers to control woody encroachment. Here, we investigate the extent of that tradeoff by analyzing the impact of woody encroachment control practices on carbon storage in silvopastures of the Argentine Dry Chaco. First, we analyze tree density and carbon storage in aboveground woody biomass for silvopastures and woodlands at 24 sites in five properties across the Argentine Dry Chaco. Then, we characterize vegetation management goals and actions of ranchers who have adopted silvopastures in that same region, combining field assessments, high-resolution imagery analysis, characterization of site history, and surveys. We find that woody biomass in silvopastures retains an average of 64 % of the carbon present in aboveground biomass in intact woodlands (28.8 Mg C ha−1). However, we also find that this storage capacity decreases by 12 % with each woody encroachment control intervention, due to these interventions' negative effects on tree density. Ranchers expressed concern about tree mortality, but also indicated low profitability of wood products and highlighted woody encroachment as a major issue for livestock production. Therefore, ranchers feel they have no choice but to continue preventing woody encroachment, even if this implies the gradual depletion of tree populations. Understanding how ranchers manage silvopastures, and how that management affects the provision of ecosystem services, is essential and will require more careful long-term monitoring and evaluation. This is particularly true in agricultural frontiers such as the Argentine Dry Chaco, where silvopastoral systems have the potential to mitigate the seemingly irremediable conflict between commodity production and nature conservation. Abstract: We report a case of a superficial angiomyxoma with a trichofolliculoma, found on the trunk of a 51-year-old man. The tumor, measuring 4 cm in maximum diameter and located in the reticular dermis and subcutaneous tissue, was composed of a conglomerate of multiple myxomatous nodules with mucinous stroma and stellate cells. Thin-walled blood vessels were prominent. The histologic examination also revealed abortive hair follicles radiating from the wall of a keratin-filled cyst. Immunohistologically, the stromal cells were positive for vimentin but negative for S-100, smooth muscle a-actin, and desmin. With these findings, the diagnosis of superficial angiomyxoma with trichofolliculoma was made. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents a case study in the town of Boo (Asturias, Spain), where land subsidence due to underground coal mining has been observed in the past along with landslides and natural ground settling. The confluence of these phenomena represents a liability for mining companies. Any property damage caused by ground movements is considered by those affected to be a direct result of mining-induced subsidence. This has led to numerous property damage liability claims against mining companies even many years after the mining activities have stopped. Based on the analysis of geotechnical studies, subsidence simulations developed with HUNDEF and 3DEC software and ground movement measurements, together with research developed within the Research Fund for the Coal and Steel MERIDA project, the authors investigated the landslide and slope instability phenomena that are occurring in the town of Boo. Moreover, they determined the geographical and temporal limits to distinguish damages for which mining activity may be responsible from natural or human-induced damages unrelated to mining. This research will allow underground coal mining companies to manage property damage liability claims from a clearer perspective and may help researchers reconsider some studies that focused only on mining-induced subsidence to explain ground movements within similar environments. This study was designed to determine whether or not insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and its receptor are present in the human male genital tract. The IGF-1 receptor was found in seminal plasma from fertile and infertile men, but no IGF-1 receptor was observed in sperm from patients with a history of more failed fertilization. The presence of the IGF-1 receptor in the plasma membrane of human sperm is proposed as a future tool for male sterility assessment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The mining industry needs community and regional governmental support to maintain its current activities and, more importantly, to develop future projects. The failure to manage environmental risks in an acceptable manner during mine operation, closing and post-closing periods is a critical factor. The mining industry must regain its reputation that has been lost over decades and centuries of environmental degradation. Several environmental management tools (e.g., life cycle assessment, multi-criteria decision analysis, etc.) are widely applied during mine development, operation and closure periods. Nevertheless, due to uncertainties associated with the post-closure phase and the end of economic activity (implying no more revenues for stakeholders in the form of workers’ salaries and municipality taxes), it is crucial to adopt sound management practices during this period to achieve sustainability in the mining sector. As operational methodologies that can be used as a reference are lacking, the management of environmental risks during and after underground coal mine closures is, in many cases, limited or is developed without specific guidance. This statement is supported by the fact that the European Commission, through the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, encouraged research, pilot and demonstration projects and accompanying measures within the coal sector via the coal programme priority of recent years (2012–2014), namely, the “Management of environmental risks during or after mine closure”. The aim of this paper is to provide mine operators with an organized informational framework that could be applied during future underground coal mine closures independent of the major environmental problems faced and directly connected to the types and characteristics of coal and the exploitation methods used. Conoscopic Holography (CH) is a non-contact interferometric technique used in surface digitizing. Similarly to other laser techniques it is influenced by the optical behaviour of the part surface and the conditions during scanning (geometry, strategy, etc.). In this work, a CH system and a touch probe (TP) integrated in a CMM were used to analyse the CH behaviour for measuring the slope angle of flat surfaces in inspection tasks. For this purpose, several digitizing tests were performed with both sensors on a square specimen under different slope angles. The tests were performed for two different orientations of the laser spot as well as at three different positions within the sensor depth of field (DOF). The specimen angles determined by each sensor were compared to each other and the difference ( slope deviation ) was used as an indicator of the CH behaviour. Considering the results, some recommendations were provided for digitizing sloped flat surfaces with the CH sensor and it was also developed a model to predict and compensate the measurement deviations of this sensor with regard to the TP. Conoscopic holography is an interferometric measurement technique commonly used for non-contact surfaces digitising in quality assessment, in-process inspection and reverse engineering. Among other factors, accuracy of measurements provided by this technology is influenced by the surface optical properties. Parameters such as laser power ( P ) or frequency of acquisition ( F ) are commonly used to adjust the sensor until a quality indicator of the signal acquired ( Signal-to-Noise-Ratio ) is maximised. Nevertheless, measurements taken under this adjusting criterion does not necessarily ensure the most accurate results from a metrological point of view. Taking this into account, the present work proposes two additional indicators to analyse the influence of sensor setting parameters on the quality of digitised point-clouds for different metals and polymers. Digitising tests have been performed on flat specimens of each material by means of a conoscopic holography sensor integrated on a Coordinate Measuring Machine. In order to meet an optimal scanning of each material, the study provides a series of recommendations about adjustment of the sensor as well as the most suitable indicator to be used in each case. Conoscopic holography (CH) is a non-contact interferometric technique used in surface digitizing. Like other laser techniques it is influenced by different factors such as surface reflectance, material, colour or even speckle noise caused by roughness. In this work, a CH system was used for analysing the influence of roughness on surface digitizing. For this purpose, several digitizing tests were performed on roughness specimens corresponding to EDM, face milling and flat grinding processes. Each roughness grade was digitized under different combinations of the sensor setting parameters (frequency F and power P ) which satisfy that the signal acquired by the sensor lies within the quality values recommended by the manufacturer. The results were analysed by using two indicators that show quality of the points captured by the sensor regarding the surface geometrical reconstruction and its metrological reliability. Finally, the study provides a series of recommendations for adjusting the sensor in order to satisfy both indicators simultaneously. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The surface quality verification of mechanical components is an essential activity in many applications where surface performance plays an important role in the functional behaviour of the part. Although many of the verification techniques commonly employed are based on the use of contact roughness profilometers, there are some limitations related to the morphological filtering effect associated to the stylus tip radius, as well as the difficulty in using these type of styli to carry out on-machine surface verification. The use of non-contact digitizing techniques helps to overcome some of these drawbacks, although the verification of surface quality using these non-contact systems still requires the development of scanning and data processing procedures similar to those described in the international standards for contact probing techniques. This work analyses the use of a non-contact sensor, based on Conoscopic Holography and integrated in a 3-axis machining centre, applied to the verification of the surface roughness of parts machined by face and cylindrical milling processes. After the calibration of the integrated system, a high-frequency noise filtering procedure specifically designed for roughness verification is proposed. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the system for verifying surface roughness grades from N5 to N12 in the two milling processes.
