Abstract

PURPOSE: To assess the clinical phenotypes in three Swedish families with X-linked retinitis pigmentosa caused by different mutations in the RPGR gene. METHODS: Three families from different parts of Sweden, including nine patients with retinitis pigmentosa and six female carriers of X-linked retinitis pigmentosa, were examined clinically. Ophthalmologic examination included kinetic perimetry with a Goldmann perimeter using standardized objects [I.sub.4e] and [V.sub.4e], dark adaptation final thresholds with a Goldmann-Weeker adaptometer, and full-field electroretinograms. RESULTS: The clinical findings in the patients demonstrated a severe form of retinitis pigmentosa with visual handicap early in life. Patients with a microdeletion of exons 8 through 10 of the RPGR gene had a more severe phenotype compared to the patients with single base-pair mutations in the introns 10 and 13 of the RPGR gene, resulting in splicing defects. Furthermore, heterozygous carriers in these families displayed a wide spectrum of clinical features, from minor symptoms to severe visual disability. CONCLUSION: These three families show a variable clinical phenotype resulting from different mutations in the RPGR gene. A microdeletion spanning at least parts of exons 8 through 10 seems to result in a severe phenotype compared to the splice defects. Heterozygous carriers of X-linked retinitis pigmentosa with these specific RPGR genotypes also show a variability of the phenotype; carriers with the microdeletion may be severely visually handicapped.

Abstract

Abstract: Ocean policies around the world increasingly emphasize the importance of maintaining resilient ocean ecosystems, communities, and economies. To maintain and restore the resilience of healthy marine ecosystems in practice, specific management objectives with metrics and a policy framework for how to apply them will be needed. Here we present a concept for doing this, based on evidence that marine ecosystems transition from desirable to less desirable states in response to a number of physical, chemical, and biological drivers. More empirical and synthesis research will be necessary to develop quantitative metrics of resilience and thresholds between ecosystem states for specific ecosystems; however, suggestions are provided here for how to manage for resilience when insufficient data and knowledge are available for quantification. A summary of thresholds for biotic and abiotic drivers of ecosystem state drawn from the literature is also provided as a guide to management. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: Liquid phase deposition treatment (LPD) was applied to form a corrosion protective titanium dioxide (TiO2) film on commercially available pure magnesium. Changing the solution pH, from acidic to highly alkaline, and with the addition of sucrose, it becomes possible to form a highly adhesive and thin TiO2 film on commercially available pure magnesium without any heat treatment. The role of the sucrose may be attributed to the formation of tetrafluoroboric acid (BF4)− in the solution reducing the homogeneous nucleation of TiO2 in the LPD solution. The film formed in the weak alkaline environment shows better corrosion resistance than at other LPD conditions, while the average rest potential is the same as that of as-polished specimens. This low rest potential may be due to micro-cracks in the formed film and high activity of the magnesium substrate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

15. Colorectal neoplasia in Asia: a multicenter colonoscopy survey in symptomatic patients.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The incidence of colorectal cancer is rising rapidly in some Asian countries. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and the distribution of colorectal neoplasm in Asian populations. DESIGN: A multicenter colonoscopy survey. PATIENTS: Between July 2004 and April 2005, consecutive symptomatic patients undergoing colonoscopic examinations in 10 different Asian countries. SETTING: The location and the histologic features of all colonic neoplasms were recorded. Advanced neoplasm was defined as adenoma larger than 10 mm in size, with >25% villous features or with high-grade dysplasia or invasive carcinoma. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: The prevalence and the distribution of colorectal neoplasm and advanced neoplasm. RESULTS: A total of 5464 eligible patients underwent colonoscopy. Advanced neoplasm was found in 512 patients (9.4%). Factors associated with the presence of advanced neoplasm in this symptomatic Asian population included male sex (relative risk [RR] 1.52, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-1.84), older age (RR 1.05, 95% CI 1.04-1.06), and ethnicity (P = .001). Advanced proximal neoplasm was detected in 136 patients (2.5%); 83 (61.0%) of the patients had normal distal colon. The RR of proximal advanced neoplasm was 2.5, 95% CI 1.7-3.7 in those with any adenoma in the distal colon compared with those with normal distal colon. LIMITATIONS: Possible underrepresentation of some ethnic groups because of uneven ethnic group distribution and the lack of population-based registry. CONCLUSIONS: This was the first multicenter colonoscopy survey that examined the characteristics of colorectal neoplasm in Asia. Abstract: Rare earths separation from hydrogen absorbing alloys by using molten salt media is proposed. The procedure consists of the following three electrochemical techniques. [(1)] Rare earths are anodically electro-dissolved into ionic melt bath from spent hydrogen absorbing alloys. [(2)] Rare earth cations are then concentrated near the anode area into the column by using the countercurrent electromigration method. [(3)] Rare earths are finally cathodically electro-deposited in metallic form. Several electrochemical measurements were studied in the molten salts containing rare earth chlorides condition, and the electro-deposition was tested to check the feasibility of processes (1) and (3). Rare earths could be separable anodically from hydrogen absorbing LaNi5 alloy by using electrochemical techniques. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
