The impact of neuroticism upon the effect of materialism and attitudes toward money on well-being has been examined in a sample of 130 adults. The results of correlation analyses closely resembled previous findings and showed the positive association between materialism and neuroticism, and negative between both materialism and neuroticism and well-being. Attitudes related to effective dealing with financial matters were connected positively with well-being and negatively or not at all with neuroticism, whereas attitudes indicating problems with financial control were associated with poorer well-being and higher neuroticism. The novelty of the results related to the role of neuroticism in the relationship between attitudes toward material assets and well-being: neuroticism mediated the relationship between materialism and well-being and the poor financial control and well-being. It had also a significant indirect effect on the link between expecting pleasure from dealing with money and diminishing well-being. The result suggest that attitudes people have toward material assets predict well-being mainly to the extent that they accompany neuroticism, having limited direct association with well-being after relationships between neuroticism and well-being is statistically controlled. The relationships between the Dark Triad traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy) and materialism were investigated in a sample from the general population ( N = 378). The triarchic psychopathy model (comprising meanness, boldness and disinhibition) was used in this study. The Dark Triad predicted 21–36% of materialism and its facets and the most powerful positive predictors were narcissism and Machiavellianism. The associations of the psychopathy constructs with materialism were weaker and inconsistent – positive for meanness and disinhibition and non-existent or negative (when controlling for narcissism) for boldness. The HEXACO traits significantly predicted 29–51% of materialism variance and the strongest negative predictor was Honesty-Humility. Narcissism and Machiavellianism added incrementally to the prediction of materialism, beyond the variance accounted for by the HEXACO domains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on neuroticism and narcissism as essential factors connecting materialism with well-being. It aims to explain their role in the context of perception of a material standard of living and satisfaction of psychological needs indicated by attainment of important goals. We also examine if defining materialism in terms of values and in terms of the pursuit of extrinsic goals affects the studied relationships. The study was conducted on a sample of 415 young adults (aged 19–29). The results show that personality matters in explaining the link between materialism and well-being in young adults, but its role is ambiguous. Neuroticism on its own does not mediate the link, whereas narcissism has a salient suppressing effect on it. The role of personality is more pronounced in connection with other mediators. Neuroticism elevates the assessment of non-extrinsic goal attainment, whereas narcissism amplifies the assessment of a material standard of living and extrinsic goals attainment; that in turn elevates well-being acting contrary to the detrimental effect of materialism. The importance of the mediating variables depends on the conceptualisation of materialism. Materialism as a value is more sensitive to personality than materialism as a pursuit of extrinsic goals.
