Context: Telephone-delivered interventions targeting physical activity and dietary change have potential for broad population reach and thus have a role to play in addressing increasing rates of lifestyle-related chronic diseases. The purpose of this systematic review is to update the evidence for their potential to inform translation, including effectiveness in promoting maintenance, reporting on implementation, and costs. Evidence acquisition: A structured search of PubMed, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO (January 2006 to April 2010) was conducted. Included studies reported on physical activity and/or dietary change in adults, delivered at least 50% of intervention contacts by telephone, and included a control group (except in dissemination studies). Detailed information on study design, intervention features, and behavioral outcomes was extracted, tabulated, and summarized. Evidence synthesis: Twenty-five studies (27 comparisons) were included: 16 for physical activity, two for diet, and seven for combined interventions. Twenty of 27 comparisons found evidence for initiation of behavior change (14 of 17 comparisons for physical activity; two of two for diet; four of eight for combined interventions). Ten of 25 studies evaluated post-intervention maintenance of change, with three reporting that maintenance was achieved for at least 50% of outcomes. Dissemination studies were rare (n=3), as were dose–response (n=2) and cost-effectiveness analyses (n=2). Conclusions: Given the strength of evidence for telephone-delivered physical activity and dietary change interventions, greater emphasis on dissemination studies is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This explanatory sequential mixed-method study explored the factors associated with the investment (or not) in sit-stand workstations (SSWs) and alternative initiatives to reduce prolonged sitting at work from the perspective of furniture purchasing decision-makers in Australian workplaces. Participants (n = 270) from >200 organisations across 19 industry sectors completed an online survey. Seven interviews were conducted in a sub-sample of participants from organisations without SSWs. The majority (80%) of workplaces reported having invested in SSWs. Workplaces without SSWs, opposed to those with SSWs, were more likely to be private (79.6% vs. 43.5%), of small/medium size (70.4% vs. 35.6%) and without a wellness program (57.4% vs. 22.2%) (all p < 0.05). Financial implications were the main reason for not investing in SSWs. Exercise and stretch breaks were alternative initiatives to reducing sedentary behaviour at work. This paper describes the co-design and development process of an evidence-informed e -training program (Sit-Stand e -Guide) to support the safe and optimal use of sit-stand workstations from ergonomics and behavioural change perspectives. Using an instructional system design process, supported by a participatory design approach, data was collected through three workshops with workplace consumers (staff [n = 5] and managers [n = 5]), and subject matter experts (n = 5). Content and learning activities were developed based on behaviour change principles and optimal pedagogy. Key topics identified for the e -training were sedentary behaviour and health; workstation set-up; and strategies for behaviour change. Learning activities (scenarios and reflection) to enhance knowledge retention and skills implementation and an interactive one-page guide on completion were included in the e -training. The relevance and usefulness of the training prototype were reviewed through one-to-one think-aloud sessions with the workshop consumers (n = 5) and external health and safety professionals (n = 5) receiving positive feedback. • Online office ergonomics training from research studies focus on the physical health. • OHS authorities provide training programs incorporate both physical and psychological health. • Engaging end-users in the design and usability evaluation helps in achieving desired outcomes. • Collaborations need to be established between OHS authorities, the scientific community and end users in developing future training programs. Online ergonomics training programs have emerged as an efficient way to support office workers' health, safety, and wellbeing. A scoping review was conducted to assess the design and user-related outcomes of current online office ergonomics training tested in the scientific literature and provided by Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) authorities. A systematic search of five databases and eighteen OHS authorities' websites was conducted. Data on training details and content was extracted and tabulated. Design outcomes of satisfaction, usability and acceptability were recorded, as were user health-related and knowledge outcomes. A validated rubric for eLearning evaluation was used to assess the functional, technical, and pedagogical aspects of training programs provided by OHS authorities. Five articles were included, and reported on user-related outcomes: musculoskeletal health, ergonomics knowledge, and/or posture. None of the studies reported on design-related outcomes. Eight online training programs were identified in six OHS authorities in Australia (2), the USA (2) and Canada (2). All eight programs included information on workstation set-up and physical hazards while two included information on psychosocial hazards. These programs scored high in the technical (12/12) and accessibility (10.5/12) aspects, but lower on teaching (4/9), social (5/9) and cognitive (5.5/9) aspects. Online office ergonomics training tested in the literature seem to focus on user-related outcomes while OHS authorities training was more comprehensive and met design-related targets. Future collaboration between OHS authorities, the scientific community and end-users need to be considered to build robust evidence-based programs that address both the design and user-related outcomes. The aim of this cross-sectional mixed-method study was to understand the current use, and practices to support the implementation, of sit-stand workstations (SSWs) from the perspective of furniture purchasing decision makers in Australian organisations. An online survey, and in-depth interviews with a purposive sub-sample were conducted. A total of 216 eligible participants from 150 organisations across 18 sectors completed the survey with 17 interviews conducted. 40% of organisations provided SSWs on request while 41% reported not using them appropriately. Over half provided no training on the appropriate use of SSWs (n = 109, 51%) nor used any strategies to enhance their use (n = 163, 84%). From the interviews, SSWs were perceived effective in reducing discomforts and increasing employees' satisfaction and productivity. Lack of resources and guidelines to support SSW usage, and lack of wellbeing knowledge, were identified as barriers. Education and ongoing monitoring are important to enhance the appropriate use and uptake of SSWs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
