- Abstract
In times of disasters, access to medications and health treatments are extremely important in order to sustain health and wellbeing. As such, it is vital to explore how people living with long-term health conditions (LTCs) understand and enact disaster preparedness planning. The aim for this research was to increase knowledge about what enables and constrains disaster preparedness practices for people with LTCs and how that might influence disaster preparedness actions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 participants with a range of LTCs. The transcripts were analysed using an interpretive approach. Findings document a range of views and activities that focused on social networks and support, preparedness, regulations and organisational issues, professional networks, and technology. From this, we propose a series of recommendations for improving disaster preparedness planning for people with LTCs. These include targeted education messaging that attends to the specific and different needs of people with LTCs, and collaborative disaster planning that includes healthcare providers, family and friends.
