Abstract

Chemical and biological sensing are problems of tremendous contemporary technological importance in multiple regulatory and human health contexts, including environmental monitoring, water quality assurance, workplace air quality assessment, food quality control, many aspects of biodiagnostics, and, of course, homeland security. Frequently, what is needed, or at least wanted, are sensors that are simultaneously cheap, fast, reliable, selective, sensitive, robust, and easy to use. Unfortunately, these are often conflicting requirements. Over the past few years, however, a number of promising ideas based on optical interference effects have emerged. Each is based to some extent on advances in the design and fabrication of functional materials. Generally, the advances are of two kinds: chemo- and bio-selective recognition and binding, and efficient methods for micropatterning or microstructuring. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract Atomic layer deposition (ALD) has been used to apply continuous Pt films on powders of the solid acid CsH 2 PO 4 (CDP), in turn, used in the preparation of cathodes in solid acid fuel cells (SAFCs). The film deposition was carried out at 150 °C using trimethyl(methylcyclopentadienyl)platinum (MeCpPtMe 3) as the Pt source and ozone as the reactant for ligand removal. Chemical analysis showed a Pt growth rate of 0.09 ± 0.01 wt%/cycle subsequent to an initial nucleation delay of 84 ± 20 cycles. Electron microscopy revealed the contiguous nature of the films prepared using 200 or more cycles. The cathode overpotential (0.48 ± 0.02 V at a current density of 200 mA/cm2) was independent of Pt deposition amount beyond the minimum required to achieve these continuous films. The cell electrochemical characteristics were moreover extremely stable with time, with the cathode overpotentials increasing by no more than 10 mV over a 100 h period of measurement. Thus, ALD holds promise as an effective tool in the preparation of SAFC cathodes with high activity and excellent stability. Graphical abstract Image 1 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: Separation of Xe/Kr mixtures was studied in two copper-paddlewheel metal-organic framework materials, MOF-505 and HKUST-1. For MOF-505, which has small pores with strong adsorption sites, high Xe/Kr selectivities (9–10) are obtained from breakthrough measurements and grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations. The consistent results from both techniques suggest that MOF-505 is a promising candidate for Xe/Kr separation. For HKUST-1, which has small octahedral pores, only modest Xe/Kr selectivities (4.5) are observed from breakthrough measurements, although the GCMC simulations predicted unusually high selectivities at low loadings. Abstract: Incorporation of Li cations into MOFs by either of two methods, chemical reduction or cation exchange, significantly improves the CO2/CH4 selectivity. While the selectivity enhancement by the chemical reduction seems to come from favorable displacement of catenated frameworks, the selectivity improvement by the Li cation exchange comes from enhanced solid–gas interactions.
