Abstract

The early stage of the crystallization process of a Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 metallic glass has been investigated by three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. HREM observation of the alloys annealed near Tg always showed the dispersion of nanocrystalline fcc big cube phase dispersed in the amorphous matrix whenever concentration fluctuations were detected by SAXS and 3DAP. The distribution of impurity oxygen was uniform in the amorphous state, while it was rejected from the big cube phase to the remaining amorphous phase after the primary crystallization. The time evolutions of primary crystals followed t0.5, indicating the grain growth was controlled by the volume diffusion of solute atoms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The crystallization process of Pd74Si18Au8 amorphous alloy has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy, small angle X-ray scattering and three-dimensional atom probe techniques. Although literature suggests that the alloy decomposes into two glassy phases prior to the crystallization, we found that the crystallization occurs directly from a single amorphous phase by the primary crystallization of fcc Pd–Au solid solution, followed by the polymorphous crystallization of the remaining amorphous phase to a Pd3Si phase. Abstract

The design modification of the ITER equatorial electron cyclotron (EC) launcher to enhance off-axis current drive performance, changing the steering capability of injection beams from toroidal to poloidal, is described. The modification requirement impacts the design of all 3 millimeter wave beam paths transmitted through the port plug and blanket shield modules (BSMs) installed in front. The optimized configuration of the mm wave design consisting of both steering and fixed mirrors, beam ducts between the waveguide outlet and BSM openings are successfully developed. Assuming a 100% pure HE 11 mode propagated at the waveguide output, a 99% transmission efficiency from the waveguide outlet to the BSM output is obtained. This modification ensures that mm wave beams from both middle and bottom beam row pass through the same BSM opening and will lead to the increase of neutron shielding potential. The configurations of BSMs are also modified maintaining the structural design concept of each module. The preliminary result of electromagnetic analysis shows that induced force and momentum torque on the modified BSMs are below the mechanical criteria of the BSMs’ support structure. Abstract

Simultaneous dyeing and enzyme processing of wool fabrics in a non-ionic surfactant reverse micellar system has been investigated using Polyoxyethylene Sorbitan Trioleate (Tween-85) as a surfactant. Solubilization of enzymes in the Tween-85 reverse micellar system was evaluated by small angle X-ray scattering method. Small angle X-ray scattering analyses showed that the Tween-85 reverse micellar system had an ability to incorporate enzymes and dyes in the interior of reverse micelles without changing their structure. The acid dye and the reactive dye solubilized in the Tween-85 reverse micellar system were effectively adsorbed on wool fabrics. Activities of enzymes in the same system were different depending on the used enzyme and took negative effects from dyes in the system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Gellan gum in aqueous solution undergoes gelation by adding the metal salts. The cross-linking domain structure in various concentrations of potassium salt was observed by small angle X-ray scattering. The results were analyzed by means of molecular models of associated double helices. It found that the gelation yielded the mono-layer flat particles constructed by side-by-side aggregation of double helices at lower salt concentration and then they grew up to the multi-layer aggregates by a further addition of salt. Abstract

Abstract: Test of the linear relation between T H (homogeneous ice nucleation temperature) and T m (melting temperature) was carried out for aqueous HCl and H2SO4 solutions. It is shown that the linear relation does not hold for aqueous H2SO4 solution. Enhancement of the ionization of sulfuric acid with decreasing temperature is the most likely cause for the curved relation between T H and T m. In addition, close examination of the T H and T m data for aqueous HCl solution indicates that the T H versus T m relation for aqueous HCl solution seems very weakly curved. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

In this study, in situ white X-ray microbeam diffraction experiments were conducted to investigate the microscopic deformation behavior of a Cu-Al-Mn superelastic alloy during tensile testing. Local deformation both at a grain scale and an intragranular scale was revealed by analyzing Laue spot streaking that occurred within a grain and in some grains with different orientations. The streaking measured within a grain under tensile load showed inhomogeneous behavior because of an inhomogeneous martensitic transformation. Moreover, the effect was dependent on grain orientation. In a grain with a high Schmid factor, a large dispersion in the 2θ diffraction angle of Laue spots was observed due to significant Laue spot streaking, which can be attributed to that grain's favored martensitic transformation.
