Field studies and laboratory experiments of the post-copulatory behavior of male parasitoid wasps, Aphytis melinus, reveal that the males protect the females for 149 s after copulation and exhibit behavior similar to that seen before copulation to switch off the receptivity of the females. The level of second male mating with guarded females declines to 70% from 97%, with 14.2% of the first males and 30.5% of the second males siring the guarded and unguarded females, respectively. Second males trying to mate with a protected female exhibit higher degree of wingbeats, contacts and time for pre-coital mount.

The purpose of this longitudinal study was to identify individual and interpersonal factors associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine series completion in a sample of low-income Latina/o adolescent girls and boys. Caregiver–adolescent dyads (N = 161) were recruited from a rural Federally Qualified Health Center in southwest Florida when the adolescent (aged 11–17 years) received the first dose of HPV vaccine. Dyads completed a baseline assessment that measured demographic and cultural characteristics, past medical history, provider–patient communication, HPV knowledge, health beliefs about completing the series, and the adolescent's experience receiving the first dose. Using multivariable logistic regression, we identified caregiver- and adolescent-related factors associated with series completion (receipt of three doses of HPV vaccine within 1 year of initiation) as indicated in the adolescent's medical record and state immunization registry. Within 1 year of initiation, 57% (n = 92) completed the three-dose series. Missed opportunities for completion were observed for 20% of the sample who returned to the clinic. Caregiver-related predictors of completion included education, self-efficacy to complete the series, and knowledge of the required number of doses. Adolescent-related predictors included age, influenza vaccination within the past 2 years, having a chronic medical condition, reason for the baseline visit, and receipt of written information about HPV vaccination from a health care provider. Findings highlight important opportunities for improving completion of the HPV vaccine series among Latina/o adolescents. Intervention efforts should involve health care providers and parent–adolescent dyads and prioritize evidence-based strategies for reducing missed opportunities for series completion. Abstract: Online monitoring of product quality is key to automated machine operation and process optimization. This paper demonstrates an in-process sensing technique for online product quality assessment, using injection moulding as an example. The system measures four parameters within the injection mould cavity, which are directly correlated with the part quality: melt pressure, temperature, velocity, and viscosity. Relationship between the sensor data and quality characteristics, e.g., thickness and width of the part, are established by incorporating governing physics for pressure–volume–temperature with other mechanistic models. Good agreement between sensor measurements and experimental results is confirmed from tests performed on a production-grade machine. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Caregivers of older adults with dementia face significant challenges associated with their care recipients' condition and with their own mental and physical wellbeing. Qualitative research data were collected via interviews with caregivers who participated in the African-American Alzheimer's Caregiver Training and Support (ACTS) research project. Analysis of these data with a focus on information use indicated that participating caregivers' information use environments were shaped by key individuals, settings, and information sources. These included the ACTS counselors, ACTS intervention guidebook, fellow caregivers, use of a personal calendar/datebook, and the identification of key problems and development of goals to help ameliorate those problems. CBT groups fostered sharing, synthesizing, and validating information about dementia caregiving and dementia care resources; the ACTS CBT guidebook served as an important physical touchstone of reliable and portable information. Understanding the specific needs, behaviors, and constraints of African-American caregivers is important to the future development of information components of tailored, depression–reduction interventions. Abstract: Metallic shielding of electromagnetic waves presents a roadblock for machine tool and process monitoring. Acoustic waves, alternatively, provide a viable mechanism, due to their inherent transmissibility in metals. This paper presents a quantitative analysis of factors affecting the performance of acoustic-based signal transmission including carrier frequency, bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio, data bit-rate, etc. Signal attenuation and data loss due to wave diffraction and reflection is first numerically studied using finite element models of representative machine structures. Experimental evaluation of these models with operating production machinery quantifies the accuracy and reliability of in situ acoustic signal transmission methods for precision metrology in manufacturing. Abstract: Individual tree-ring series may show changed growth trends and divergent climate–growth associations even within a site, highlighting the need to examine tree growth and its climate association before building a chronology. We provided a case study for the stratification and temporal variability of tree growth and its climate associations of individual cores for three mountain ranges in north central China. Tree growth is mainly limited by moisture conditions in previous July–September and current June–August. Repeated sampling and field investigations of Picea wilsonii at Xinglong Mountain over a growth year of 2004 suggested that the growing season is from about the end of April to the end of September. It appears that the moisture conditions in previous and current growing seasons are crucial for tree growth in this region. However, a decrease in drought limitation was observed for a few tree-ring series. We thereby built the pooled chronology and sub-site chronologies with only drought-sensitive tree rings similar climate–growth relationships from the three mountain slopes. Growth disturbances of tree-ring series are detected by checking the occurrence of successively low values of the biweight series, which are treated by fitting a flexible curve. Abstract: Online process metrology is critical to ensuring manufacturing quality and productivity. This paper presents the design and modelling of a multivariate sensor that enables the simultaneous measurement of multiple parameters from within an RF shielded environment, e.g. an injection mold. A coded wave modulation scheme is developed for wirelessly transmitting the parameters through the mold. The design of the modulator is optimized through a coupled field analysis for noise reduction. The effectiveness of the sensing method is demonstrated in the online measurement of melt pressure, temperature, viscosity, and velocity. The objective of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect of plant-derived antimicrobials including trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC), eugenol, carvacrol, and thymol on major bacterial mastitis pathogens in milk. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the aforementioned compounds on Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Streptococcus uberis, Staph ylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli were determined. In addition, the bactericidal kinetics of TC on the aforementioned pathogens and the persistence of the antimicrobial activity of TC in milk over a period of 2 wk were investigated. All 4 plant-derived molecules exhibited antimicrobial activity against the 5 mastitis pathogens tested, but TC was most effective in killing the bacteria. The MIC and MBC of TC on Staph. aureus, E. coli, and Strep. uberis were 0.1 and 0.45%, respectively, whereas that on Strep. agalactiae and Strep. dysgalactiae were 0.05 and 0.4%, respectively. The MIC and MBC of the other 3 molecules ranged from 0.4 to 0.8% and 0.8 to 1.5%, respectively. In time-kill assays, TC at the MBC reduced the bacterial pathogens in milk by 4.0 to 5.0 log10 cfu/mL and to undetectable levels within 12 and 24 h, respectively. The antimicrobial effect of TC persisted for the duration of the experiment (14 d) without any loss of activity. Results of this study suggest that TC has the potential to be evaluated as an alternative or adjunct to antibiotics as intramammary infusion to treat bovine mastitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: On-line monitoring of polymer melt state is critical to ensuring part quality in injection molding. This paper presents a novel, dual-parameter sensing method for simultaneous measurement of pressure and temperature variations within the mold cavity through a modulator circuit. Pressure variation during the molding cycle, which is proportional to the electrical charge output of a piezoceramic stack, is discretized into acoustic pulses that are subsequently frequency-modulated by a temperature-sensitive oscillator (TSO). The ability to measure two parameters using one sensor package without batteries and cables for data transmission provides a new platform for monitoring injection molding processes. Abstract: This article discusses the construction and representation of identity in an online dyadic customer service chat setting, using a data set of more than 6000 session transcriptions. The analysis explores the use of names and other markers of identity in chat interactions; assumptions about generic, group, and individual identities; authentication and verification activities; and problems related to identity construction, representation, and authentication. The article concludes that providing a satisfactory virtual reference experience requires focusing on identity representation. Users will benefit when providers balance the expediency of virtual reference with persistent identity markers, establishing a sense of rapport between the user and information provider. Abstract: One goal of library and information science (LIS) education is for graduates to engage with the profession and interact with one another throughout their careers. The increase over the last decade in online distance learning options for LIS students presents a challenge to educators with respect to this goal: are students who earn the degree online sufficiently connected with one another to encourage the growth of lasting and productive professional networks? This article examines this question by looking at creation and loss of sociotechnical capital among LIS distance education graduates. The findings indicate that LIS educators should consider sociotechnical capital issues at the individual, interpersonal, and cohort level to support shared, lasting professional contributions. This study examined factors that might affect researchers' willingness to collaborate with a specific researcher and the priorities given to those factors. In addition, it investigated how researchers determined the ownership of collaborative project data and how they determined the order of authorship on collaborative publications in condensed matter physics. In general, researchers rated their intrinsic motivations the highest, such as the quality of ideas a potential collaborator might have and their satisfaction with a past collaboration, followed by their extrinsic motivations, such as the complementary knowledge, skills, or resources the collaborator could provide. In addition, researchers who had a greater number of collaborative projects and researchers who had served as a project PI or co-PI valued the deep-level, personality-related characteristics of a collaborator higher than did those who had not. Younger researchers were more risk averse and more concerned with a collaborator's reputation and the possible cost of a collaboration decision. Additionally, younger researchers indicated more often than older researchers that they did not know whether their project teams followed any rules or norms or engaged in negotiation to determine the order of authorship on collaborative publications. To increase our understanding of the mechanisms by which growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I influence bovine mammary gland development, the potential roles of T-box2 (TBX2) and T-box3 (TBX3) were investigated. Although no information regarding expression of either transcription factor in the bovine mammary gland exists, it is known that TBX3 and its closely related family member, TBX2, are required for mammary gland development in humans and mice. Additionally, TBX3 mutations in humans and mice lead to ulnar mammary syndrome. Evidence is present in bone that TBX3 is required for proliferation and its expression is regulated by GH, an important regulator of mammary gland development and milk production. We hypothesized that TBX2 and TBX3 are expressed in the bovine mammary gland and that GH, IGF-I, or both increase TBX2 and TBX3 expression in bovine mammary epithelial cells (MEC). Bovine mammary gland tissue, MAC-T cells, primary MEC, and fibroblasts were obtained and TBX2 and TBX3 expression was determined by real-time reverse transcription PCR. In addition, TBX2 and TBX3 expression was examined in cells treated with 100 or 500 ng/mL of GH or 100 or 200 ng/mL of IGF-I for 24 or 48 h. Both TBX2 and TBX3 were expressed in bovine mammary tissue. Surprisingly, expression of TBX2 was only detected in mammary fibroblast cells, whereas TBX3 was expressed in all 3 cell types. Growth hormone did not alter TBX3 expression in MAC-T cells or MEC. However, IGF-I increased TBX3 expression in MAC-T, but not in primary MEC. We did not observe a change in TBX2 or TBX3 expression in fibroblasts treated with GH and IGF. Therefore, we concluded that (1) TBX2 and TBX3 are expressed in bovine mammary gland, (2) their expression is cell-type specific, and (3) IGF-I stimulates TBX3 expression in MAC-T cells. Abstract: In the second half of the 20th century, scientific research in physics, chemistry, and engineering began to focus on the use of large government-funded laboratories. This shift toward so-called big science also brought about a concomitant change in scientific work itself, with a sustained trend toward the use of highly specialized scientific teams, elevating the role of team characteristics on scientific outputs. The actual impact of scientific knowledge is commonly measured by how often peer-reviewed publications are, in turn, cited by other researchers. Therefore, how characteristics such as author team seniority, affiliation diversity, and size affect the overall impact of team publications was examined. Citation information and author demographics were reviewed for 123 articles published in Physical Review Letters from 2004 to 2006 and written by 476 scientists who used the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory''s facilities. Correlation analysis indicated that author teams that were more multi-institutional and had homogeneous seniority tended to have more senior scientists. In addition, the analysis suggests that more mixed seniority author teams were likely to be less institutionally dispersed. Quantile regression was used to examine the relationships between author-team characteristics and publication impact. The analysis indicated that both weighted average seniority and average seniority had a negative relationship with the number of citations the publication received. Furthermore, the analysis also showed a positive relationship between first-author seniority and the number of citations, and a negative relationship between the number of authors and the number of citations. Summary: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can sensitively detect white matter sex differences and the effects of pharmacological treatments. Before cross-sex hormone treatment, the white matter microstructure of several brain bundles in female-to-male transsexuals (FtMs) differs from those in females but not from that in males. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether cross-sex hormone treatment (androgenization) affects the brain white matter microstructure. Using a Siemens 3 T Trio Tim Magneton, DTI was performed twice, before and during cross-sex hormonal treatment with testosterone in 15 FtMs scanned. Fractional anisotropy (FA) was analyzed on white matter of the whole brain, and the latter was spatially analyzed using Tract-Based Spatial Statistics. Before each scan the subjects were assessed for serum testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin level (SHBG), and their free testosterone index. After at least seven months of cross-gender hormonal treatment, FA values increased in the right superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) and the right corticospinal tract (CST) in FtMs compared to their pre-treatment values. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that the increments in the FA values in the SLF and CST are predicted by the free testosterone index before hormonal treatment. All these observations suggest that testosterone treatment changes white matter microstructure in FtMs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In a discovery effort to find safe and effective DGAT-1 inhibitors, we have identified 2-phenyloxazole 4-carboxamide 1 as a conformationally constrained analog of a hydrazide hit, which was previously identified from high-throughput screening. Further optimization of this series has led to chemically more stable 2-phenyloxazole-based DGAT-1 inhibitor 25 with improved solubility, cell-based activity, and pharmacokinetic properties. Compound 25 also demonstrated in vivo efficacy in a diet-induced obesity (DIO) rat model. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The directed self-assembly of polymer-polymer-solvent ternary blends on heterogeneously functionalized substrate is investigated with a three dimensional numerical model. The numerical simulation results are quantitatively verified by the experimental results. The phase separation of PS-PMMA-DMF blends are spin coated on a substrate functionalized by ODT/ on Au surface. While many simulation parameters are set to the experimental conditions, other unmeasurable material constitutive model parameters are estimated from the real experiment observations. The effects of the spin speed, pattern periodicity, PS/PAA composition ratio, and the PAA molecular weight are investigated in both the experiments and numerical simulation. The simulation results are verified by comparison to the experimental results. During the verification process, numerical optimization methods are employed to determine the unmeasurable physical parameters. Quantitative methods are introduced for assessment of the results. Summary: There is strong evidence of sex differences in mental rotation tasks. Transsexualism is an extreme gender identity disorder in which individuals seek cross-gender treatment to change their sex. The aim of our study was to investigate if male-to-female (MF) and female-to-male (FM) transsexuals receiving cross-sex hormonal treatment have different patterns of cortical activation during a three-dimensional (3D) mental rotation task. An fMRI study was performed using a 3-T scan in a sample of 18 MF and 19 FM under chronic cross-sex hormonal treatment. Twenty-three males and 19 females served as controls. The general pattern of cerebral activation seen while visualizing the rotated and non-rotated figures was similar for all four groups showing strong occipito-parieto-frontal brain activation. However, compared to control males, the activation of MF transsexuals during the task was lower in the superior parietal lobe. Compared to control females, MF transsexuals showed higher activation in orbital and right dorsolateral prefrontal regions and lower activation in the left prefrontal gyrus. FM transsexuals did not differ from either the MF transsexual or control groups. Regression analyses between cerebral activation and the number of months of hormonal treatment showed a significant negative correlation in parietal, occipital and temporal regions in the MF transsexuals. No significant correlations with time were seen in the FM transsexuals. In conclusion, although we did not find a specific pattern of cerebral activation in the FM transsexuals, we have identified a specific pattern of cerebral activation during a mental 3D rotation task in MF transsexuals under cross-sex hormonal treatment that differed from control males in the parietal region and from control females in the orbital prefrontal region. The hypoactivation in MF transsexuals in the parietal region could be due to the hormonal treatment or could reflect a priori cerebral differences between MF transsexual and control subjects. Abstract: Block copolymers are of increasing interest because of their nanometer-scale morphologies, which can be utilized in a range of applications, including nanolithography. Orientation of the domains can be controlled by part design and processing conditions in injection molding. In this work the surface morphology and alignment of block copolymers by mechanical flow fields from injection molding was investigated using a styrene–ethylene/butylene–styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS) and compared with the morphology induced by spin coating. Compared with the isotropic morphology found by spin coating and annealing, the surface domains were oriented in the flow direction. Increasing mold temperature and injection velocity enhanced the degree of orientation, whereas melt temperature had little effect. Holstein heifer, steer, and bull calves from control (CL) and select (SL) lines of cows that differed by more than 4000 kg of milk during a 305-d lactation (SL > CL) were used to determine growth hormone (GH) response to 5 doses of GH releasing hormone (GHRH) and how this response was affected by gender, period (age), and genetic merit for milk yield. Doses (0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 µg/100 kg of BW) of a GHRH analog were assigned randomly to each heifer (4 CL, 4 SL), steer (4 CL, 4 SL), and bull (3 CL, 3 SL) calf and administered on consecutive days at approximately 3, 6, and 10 mo of age (periods; P1, P2, and P3). Jugular blood samples (n = 15) collected between -30 and 240 min relative to GHRH administration were used to quantify area under the GH response curve (AUC) after subtracting mean prechallenge GH concentrations. Estimates of maximum response (Rmax) and sensitivity (ED50) to GHRH were obtained from the hyperbolic dose response curves (AUC vs. dose). Data were analyzed for effects of dose, line, period, gender, and their interactions with period as the repeated effect. Prechallenge GH concentrations were not affected by genetic line, gender, or period. The AUC was not affected by line, but decreased with period and increased with GHRH dose. The Rmax did not differ between lines or among genders, but decreased with period. The ED50 did not differ between lines or among periods, but heifers were more sensitive to GHRH than steers or bulls.
