Abstract

The history and motives of the American trusts are examined. Trusts were an innovative and efficiency-increasing institutional solution to a markets with empty cores and characterized by indivisible supply and variable demand. In such markets, institutional arrangements will evolve to enforce an equilibrium. As such, trusts were primarily interested in securing market control so that efficient industry configurations could be achieved.

Abstract

A market survey was conducted in Manila in 1990 to establish baseline earnings pattern of men and women in poor countries. It was found that in terms of raw means, women's earnings were about 30 percent less than men's and both were distributed so that in some industries there were women who earned more than the average man.
