• Brown tumor is an uncommon pathognomic sign of hyperparathyroidism. • Brown tumour more frequently asscociated with secondary than primary hyperparathyroidism (In our case it was associated with primary hyperparathyroidism). • Distal humerus a rare site of brown tumour (Brown tumours associated with primary hyperparathyroidism usually affect the maxilla, pelvis and ribs other than long bones). A brown tumour is benign bony lesion caused by localized, rapid osteoclastic turnover, resulting from hyperparathyroidism. In this report, we present a case of 25-year-old woman with multiple swelling and bone pain. Plain radiographs of the affected bones revealed multiple erosive bone tumours, which were diagnosed as brown tumours associated with primary hyperparathyroidism. A 25 year old female presented with swelling in left elbow since 1 month along with multiple swelling in body. Patient had pain in left elbow after trivial fall. X-ray showed lytic lesion of left elbow with pathological fracture. Biopsy was suggestive of brown tumour of distal humerus. We managed this case with reconstruction of defect with fibula grafting and plating. Pathological fracture in young adult should always be properly investigated. A high index of suspicion is necessary to diagnose unusual presentation of Primary Hyperparathyroidism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two organic cocrystals namely, 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione:2-naphthoxyacetic acid [(phendione)(2-naa)] (1) and 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione:2-formylphenoxyacetic acid [(phendione)(2-fpaa)] (2) were synthesized and studied by single crystal XRD, FT-IR, NMR, thermogravimetric, and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The molecular properties of cocrystals were studied using density functional theory (DFT), basis set B3LYP/6-31G(d,p). Both cocrystals are stabilized through intermolecular hydrogen bonding (OH...N). The total electron density and molecular electrostatic potential surfaces of the cocrystals were constructed by NBO analysis using B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) method to display the electrostatic potential (electron + nuclei) distribution. Aluminium-based single films were pulled out of a melt using circular wire frames and characterised with respect to their stability under varied conditions. Pure Al, AlSi9 and AlSi9Mg0.6 alloys as well as particle reinforced composites based on the same alloys but adding different amounts of stabilising SiC or TiB2 particles were prepared. The velocity at which films were drawn was varied to investigate their solidification as well as their oxidation behaviour. In order to study the influence of the oxygen content of the foaming atmosphere a chamber was manufactured that allows for pulling single films under defined conditions. It was found that films without Mg were less stable than Mg-containing ones and even the addition of particles to such Mg-free alloys results in no improvement. In contrast, films made of AlSi9Mg0.6 were more stable and required only a small amount of oxygen (> 200 ppm O2), but in general some oxygen has always to be present to obtain a stable film. It was found that the more particles are contained in the composite and the slower the film gets pulled, the lower the required oxygen content is. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we evaluated the ability of different Camp ylobacter phenotypes (biofilm versus planktonic) to colonize young poultry. It has been suggested that a persistent Camp ylobacter biofilm reservoir may be involved in the initial contamination of poultry flocks. Camp ylobacter jejuni cultured adherent to agar was utilized as the biofilm model and C. jejuni cultured in broth was evaluated as the planktonic model. In 2 independent trials, 1-d-old broiler chicks were given 1 of 3 treatments: 1) 105 cfu·mL-1 of C. jejuni cultured in broth, 2) 105 cfu·mL-1 of C. jejuni cultured adherent to agar, or 3) no C. jejuni (negative control). Cecal contents of all birds were evaluated by culturing 12 d after the initial challenge with C. jejuni. In both trials, birds challenged with C. jejuni cultured in broth had approximately 3 to 4 log higher cecal Camp ylobacter concentration than birds challenged with C. jejuni cultured adherent to agar. Using 2 cell lines (TNT 407 and DF1), virulence of C. jejuni cultured in broth ver- sus adherent to agar also was evaluated by challenging monolayers of eukaryotic cells with 1 of 3 treatments: 1) 105 cfu·mL-1 of C. jejuni cultured in broth, 2) 105 cfu·mL-1 of C. jejuni cultured adherent to agar, or 3) no C. jejuni (negative control). The virulence study also showed differences of C. jejuni cultured in broth or agar in attachment and invasion abilities to tissue culture cells, but differences were not as consistent as with the chick colonization study.
