11. Exploring prelicensure nursing students' perceptions and attitudes toward mathematics in a concept-based curriculum.

Abstract

• Students' perceptions and attitudes about mathematics impact their performance. • A Clinical Math course affects students' confidence, persistence, and interest in math. • Stakeholders should consider placement of math content in the nursing curriculum. This study examines the perceptions and attitudes towards mathematics of prelicensure nursing students enrolled in a concept-based curriculum, and if there are differences in perceptions based on whether students completed, were enrolled in, or yet to take their required mathematics course. Students in two nursing courses completed a mathematics attitudes and perceptions survey, which compares students' perspectives with experts in the field. The survey captures students' perceptions along multiple subscales: growth mindset, real world use of mathematics, confidence, interest, persistence, sense-making, and the nature of answers in mathematics. Students' perceptions aligned most with the experts in the growth mindset and sense-making subscales. When compared to their peers who had yet to complete the required Clinical Mathematics course, students that completed or were enrolled in the course had significantly greater scores in the mathematical confidence, persistence, and interest subscales. Completing a Clinical Mathematics course has a positive impact on students perceived mathematical confidence, persistence, and interest in math. The objective of the classic MEB problem is to assign transmission powers to the nodes of a wireless network is such a way that the total energy dissipated on the network is minimized, while a connected broadcasting structure is guaranteed by the assigned transmission powers. In the new variant of the problem treated in this paper, node failure is taken into account, aiming at providing solutions with a chosen reliability level for the broadcasting structure. Three mixed integer linear programming formulations for the new problem are presented, together with efficient formulation-dependent methods for their solution. Computational results are proposed and discussed. One method emerges as the most promising one under realistic settings. It is able to handle problems with up to fifty nodes. Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel matheuristic for the Asymmetric Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (ACVRP). This optimization-based approach combines some heuristic concepts with compact mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulations. Basically, the proposed matheuristic includes three sequential stages. First, the problem size is heuristically reduced by discarding unpromising arcs. Second, a starting feasible solution is derived. Finally, an optimization-based improvement procedure is invoked to iteratively generate near-optimal solutions. This latter procedure requires solving a sequence of two- or three-vehicle ACVRP reduced instances. A peculiar feature of the solution strategy is that all the three stages are solely based on solving compact MILP formulations using a commercial solver and it does not resort to any constructive heuristic nor metaheuristic. We describe the results of extensive computational experiments, that were carried out on a large set of benchmark instances with up to 200 nodes, and we provide empirical evidence that the proposed matheuristic often delivers high-quality solutions. 2016 Scopus

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine, in-vitro, the influence of temperature (T; 10–30 °C, step 5°), water activity (aw, 0.83–0.99; step 0.04) and time on sporulation (SPO) of some cheese-related fungi belonging to Penicillium spp. and A. versicolor. Overall, sporulation started rapidly (8 h in optimal conditions); it was significantly influenced by T and aw and the fungi studied were clearly distinguished based on their thermo-hydro adaptation. Boundary conditions for sporulation were defined for all the fungi considered and the sporulation rate was successfully modelled, especially based on T and time regimes. Penicillium crustosum, P. nordicum and P. verrucosum showed optimum for SPO at T between 20 and 25 °C and their sporulation continued up to aw = 0.87 (aw = 0.83 for P. nordicum). They resulted the fungi best adapted to the environmental conditions of ripening grana cheese storehouses; therefore, it is expected they dominate on the grana cheese surface. Studies on cheese are necessary to validate these results obtained on artificial media and without fungi co-occurrence.

Abstract

Microbial communities within anaerobic ecosystems have evolved to degrade and recycle carbon throughout the earth. A number of strains have been isolated from anaerobic microbial communities, which are rich in carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZymes) to liberate fermentable sugars from crude plant biomass (lignocellulose). However, natural anaerobic communities host a wealth of microbial diversity that has yet to be harnessed for biotechnological applications to hydrolyze crude biomass into sugars and value-added products. This review highlights recent advances in 'omics' techniques to sequence anaerobic microbial genomes, decipher microbial membership, and characterize CAZyme diversity in anaerobic microbiomes. With a focus on the herbivore rumen, we further discuss methods to discover new CAZymes, including those found within multi-enzyme fungal cellulosomes. Emerging techniques to characterize the interwoven metabolism and spatial interactions between anaerobes are also reviewed, which will prove critical to developing a predictive understanding of anaerobic communities to guide in microbiome engineering. 50. Apple mycotoxins: From orchard to processed apple puree.

Abstract

Apples and apple-derived products can be contaminated with patulin and, to a lesser extent, aflatoxin B1 and fumonisins. Fruits were collected from Golden Delicious and Imperatore trees in three orchards in Veneto, Northern Italy, and analysed for the presence of fungi and mycotoxins. Sampling and analyses were also carried out from storage bins to final puree tanks along the apple-puree production chain. Alternaria spp. and Penicillium spp. were commonly isolated from apples collected in the field, but their presence varied with cultivar and orchard location. In contrast, Aspergillus section Flavi spp. and Fusarium spp. were only detected via direct isolation from chopped fruits. Patulin and Alternaria toxins were frequently identified in fresh fruits, while aflatoxins were also present in some fruits albeit at very low levels. Fungi were present in fruits entering the apple-puree production line, but not in apple puree after treatment at 95–105 °C. In contrast, the abovementioned mycotoxins were detected at all stages along the production line. Surprisingly, fumonisins were only detected after the apple puree was subjected to thermal treatment. Implications of these findings were discussed and few unresolved scientific questions were posed to stimulate further lines of study. • Mycotoxin-producing fungi of different genera confirmed to occur in apples. • Multiple toxins (patulin, Alternaria toxins, aflatoxins) detected in apple fruits. • Co-occurrence of mycotoxins confirmed in apple puree. • Apple processing make fumonisin detectable and seems to increase patulin quantified.
