Sunshine duration is widely used to estimate solar radiation, but this estimated inherently contains some uncertainties, limiting its applications. This study investigated the impacts of the estimated solar radiation on simulated gross primary productivity (GPP), which were obtained using ecosystem models – light use efficiency model (LUE) and process-based model – Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator (BEPS) at an evergreen coniferous forest ecosystem in southeast China. The models for solar radiation and diffuse radiation estimation were calibrated through observation data from nearby meteorological stations. The results showed that the established model could be successfully used to estimate solar radiation with high coefficient of determination (0.92) and low root mean square error (2.18 MJ m −2 day −1 ), but the solar radiation was overestimated when the clearness index was less than 0.15 and underestimated when it was within the range of 0.2–0.35 or greater than 0.6. The estimated solar radiation has significant influence on the diffuse radiation estimation and GPP simulation comparing with using observations. The two ecosystem models reacted differently to the errors of estimated solar radiation. For the LUE model, the estimated solar radiation led to the underestimated GPP in growing season (May–October), and overestimated GPP during non-growing season (November–April) with the bias ranged from −11% to 10% depending on the month of a year. For the BEPS model, estimated solar radiation resulted in overestimated GPP in most months with the bias ranged from −6% to 20%. The difference between the simulated GPP based on these two sources of solar radiation could be counteracted to some extent at the annual scale, especially for LUE model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Measures to characterize the spatial patterns of vegetation change can provide important information for understanding and assessing habitat fragmentation and its causes. This study developed a new framework to assess fragmentation by integrating the spatial patterns of vegetation coverage and its change across the giant panda habitat ecosystem of China. Based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) time-series data, we detected the historical vegetation disturbances and used "abrupt," "gradual," and "total" to characterize the vegetation change processes from 2000 to 2017. The spatial patterns of vegetation coverage and its change were described by spatial clusters and outliers, and the framework was established to find the potential area for reduction of habitat fragmentation. The results indicated that 1.9% of the study area experienced disturbances during 2000–2017. Most of the disturbed area (78.9%) experienced negative abrupt vegetation change, and the undisturbed area mainly showed an increase in vegetation (85.8%). The spatial clusters of high and low total changes accounted for 22.7% and 18.2% of the study area, respectively. The high change clusters were primarily along the northern and southeastern borders of the giant panda habitat, while the low change clusters spread over the central and southern areas. Considering the spatial patterns of both vegetation coverage and its change, 12.7% of the study area, located mainly in southern Minshan and eastern Qionglaishan, needs careful management to reduce habitat fragmentation. This study provides new insight to understand habitat fragmentation in terms of spatial and temporal characteristics of vegetation status and change, and will benefit future habitat management efforts. Understanding the terrestrial carbon and water cycles is crucial for mitigation and adaptation for climate change. Leaf area index (LAI) is a key biophysical parameter in process-based ecosystem models for simulating gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET). The uncertainty in satellite-derived LAI products and their effects on the simulation of carbon and water fluxes at regional scales remain unclear. We evaluated three satellite-derived LAI products - MODIS (MCD15), GLASS, and Four-Scale Geometric Optical Model based LAI (FSGOM) over the period 2003–2012 using fine-resolution (30 m) LAI data and field LAI measurements. GLASS had higher accuracy than FSGOM and MCD15 for forests, while FSGOM had higher accuracy than MCD15 and GLASS for grasslands. The three LAI products differed in magnitude, spatial patterns, and trends in LAI. We then examined the resulting discrepancies in simulated annual GPP and ET over China using a process-based, diagnostic terrestrial biosphere model. Mean annual total GPP for China's terrestrial ecosystems based on GLASS (6.32 Pg C yr − 1 ) and FSGOM (6.15 Pg C yr − 1 ) was 22.5% and 19.2% higher than that based on MCD15 (5.16 Pg C yr − 1 ), respectively. Annual GPP based on GLASS and MCD15 increased over larger fractions of China's vegetated area (15.9% and 17.3%, respectively) than that based on FSGOM (12.6%). National annual ET based on GLASS (379.9 mm yr − 1 ) and FSGOM (374.4 mm yr − 1 ) was 7.9% and 6.3% higher than that based on MCD15 (352.1 mm yr − 1 ), respectively. Simulated ET increased in larger fractions of the vegetated area for GLASS (5.7%) and MCD15 (5.8%) than for FSGOM (3.9%). Our study shows that there were large discrepancies in LAI among satellite-derived LAI products and the biases of the LAI products could lead to substantial uncertainties in simulated carbon and water fluxes. In remote sensing–based forest aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation research, data saturation in Landsat and radar data is well known, but how to reduce this problem for improving AGB estimation has not been fully examined. Different vegetation types have their own species composition and stand structure, thus they have different data saturation values in Landsat or radar data. Optical and radar data also have different characteristics in representing forest stand structures, thus effective use of their features may improve AGB estimation. This research examines the effects of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and ALOS PALSAR L-band data and their integrations in forest AGB estimation of Zhejiang Province, China, and the roles of textural images from both datasets. The linear regression models of AGB were conducted by using (1) Landsat TM alone, (2) ALOS PALSAR data alone, (3) their combination as extra bands, and (4) their data fusion, based on non-stratification and stratification of vegetation types, respectively. The results show that (1) overall, Landsat TM data perform better than PALSAR data, but the latter can produce more accurate estimates for bamboo and shrub, and for forests with AGB values less than 60 Mg/ha; (2) the combination of TM and PALSAR data as extra bands can greatly improve AGB estimation performance, but their fusion using the modified high-pass filter resolution-merging technique cannot; (3) textures are indeed valuable in AGB estimation, especially for forests with complex stand structures such as mixed forests and pine forests with understories of broadleaf species; (4) stratification of vegetation types can improve AGB estimation performance; and (5) the results from the linear regression models are characterized by overestimation and underestimation for the smaller and larger AGB values, respectively, and thus, selecting non-linear models or non-parametric algorithms may be needed in future research. Abstract: Vegetation fractional coverage (VFC) is an important vegetation parameter affecting exchanges of carbon, water, energy between the atmosphere and surface. In this study, the applicability of tonal and texture measures calculated using an IKONOS_2 image in retrieving VFC of forests was investigated in the urban area of Nanjing city, China. Four spectral vegetation indices (VI) and six texture measures (TEX) were related to VFCs acquired from in situ measurements. Models for estimating VFC based on VIs or/and TEXs were established and validated for planted low broad-leaf forest plots (PLB), planted mature forest plots (PMF), natural broad-leaf forest plots (NBF), and all forest plots (ALLv), respectively. The results show that high spatial resolution remote sensing data is applicable to estimate VFC in urban areas, and TEXs may act as effective supplements of vegetation indices (VIs) for the retrieval of VFC. VIs are suitable for VFC estimation of mature forests (such as NBF and PMF) with high vegetation density, and TEXs can yield a more accurate estimate for planted forests (such as PLB and PMF) with regular spatial distribution if they are calculated with proper parameters, such as window size. The combination of VIs and TEXs improve the estimation of VFC if forest types are not previously differentiated. The results can be used as a reference for determining effective spectral or texture parameters in VFC estimation under similar environmental conditions according to vegetation maturity and regularity.
