Abstract

• A novel high-entropy electrocatalyst Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 @CoNiCuFe–NC has been fabricated. • Synergistic effect of multimetal, N, and C species improves catalytic activity. • This material exhibits outstanding catalytic performance for over water splitting. Due to unique electrical properties and high catalytic efficiency, transition metal nitrogen-codoped carbide (TM–N–C) has attracted tremendous interest as a multifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting. Unlike traditional single-source modification, herein a novel pomegranate-like high-entropy (HE) electrocatalyst of Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 decorated with homogeneous multimetal (Fe, Co, Cu, and Ni) nitrogen-codoped carbon matrix (Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 @CoNiCuFe–NC) is reported. It can be implemented by the simple thermal annealing method of multimetal codoped zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF). Benefiting from the synergistic effects of plentiful TM–N–C species, template effect of ZIF and distinct nanoporous structure, HE electrocatalyst Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 @CoNiCuFe–NC exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance. When applied in strong alkaline electrolyte (1.0 M KOH), the overpotentials of Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 @CoNiCuFe–NC present as low as 202 and 97 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at 10 mA cm−2 current density. Surprisingly as a bifunctional electrode, it can achieve the low cell voltage of 1.53 V at 10 mA cm−2 current density for overall water splitting, which is comparable to conventional IrO 2 ||Pt/C electrode and superior to the recently reported analogous bifunctional catalysts. Abstract

• A solar-driven thermochemical reactor integrated with heat recovery is proposed. • A comprehensive coupled heat and mass transfer model is established. • Optimal reactor can achieve a solar-to-fuel efficiency of 10.58%. • The theoretical solar-to-fuel efficiency can reach as high as 40.43%. To cope with the increasingly serious energy crisis and environmental problems, the transformation from traditional energy to renewable energy is urgent. Solar-driven thermochemical conversion of CO 2 and H 2 O into renewable fuels technology provides a favorable path for alternative energy. However, the temperature/pressure swing required for the reduction and oxidation steps during thermochemical process incurs irreversible energy losses and severe material stresses. Moreover, the two-step redox cycle mode cannot achieve a continuous fuel production in the reactor. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel design of thermochemical reactor integrated with heat recovery for continuous production of renewable fuels. In this design, an oxygen-conducting ceria membrane is employed to conduct oxygen ions, electrons and vacancies induced by the oxygen chemical potential gradient to achieve an isothermal and continuous splitting of CO 2 and H 2 O. At the fuel production side, a counter-flow and tube-in-tube alumina reticulate porous ceramic filling heat exchange design is developed to recover the sensible heat of gas products and excessive reactants. In addition, a comprehensive model is developed by coupling the computational dynamics of flow, radiation, conduction and convection, and is solved by the Monte Carlo method coupled with ANSYS FLUENT software through User-defined Functions. Results indicate that the integrating membrane reactor/heat recovery design can not only realize continuous production of renewable fuels, but also recover sensible heat of gas products, which is beneficial for conversion of solar energy to chemical energy. Optimizing heat recovery design can help reactor achieve a solar-to-fuel efficiency of 10.58%. Moreover, if the theoretical CO 2 conversion rate could be achieved, the solar-to-fuel efficiency of reactor can reach as high as 40.43%, which means that such a reactor design has a huge potential in conversion of solar energy into renewable fuels.
