Here, we tested that standard eyes-closed resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms may characterize patients with mild cognitive impairment due to chronic kidney disease at stages 3–4 (CKDMCI-3&4) in relation to CKDMCI patients under hemodialysis (CKDMCI-H) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients with cerebrovascular disease (CVMCI). Clinical and rsEEG data in 22 CKDMCI-3&4, 15 CKDMCI-H, 18 CVMCI, and 30 matched healthy control (HC) participants were available in a national archive. Spectral rsEEG power density was calculated from delta to gamma frequency bands at scalp electrodes. Results showed that (1) all MCI groups over the HC group showed decreased occipital rsEEG alpha power density; (2) compared to the HC and CVMCI groups, the 2 CKDMCI groups had higher rsEEG delta–theta power density; and (3) the CKDMCI-3&4 group showed the lowest parietal rsEEG alpha power density. The present rsEEG measures may be useful to monitor the impact of circulating uremic toxins on brain regulation of cortical arousal for quiet vigilance in CKDMCI patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we aimed to systematically review and critically appraise the available literature concerning the effectiveness of marsupialisation and decompression on the reduction of cystic jaw lesions. The 'Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis' guidelines were followed and the study protocol was registered at the 'International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews' (CRD42019116099). Six main databases were searched: Embase, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus, The Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Searches were complemented with three grey literature sources: Google Scholar, ProQuest, and Open Grey. Any reduction measures, compared with preoperative status or other procedures, were considered. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool. Thirty-one studies were included, of which five were judged with low, 24 with moderate, and two with high risk of bias. Considering surgical approach, 20 studies assessed the decompression and 11 the marsupialisation technique. Most studies considered these techniques as preliminary treatments, followed by enucleation. From 1088 lesions found, most were odontogenic keratocysts (33.8%), followed by unicystic ameloblastomas (21.0%), dentigerous cysts (20.6%), and radicular cysts (8.4%). Large lesions and younger individuals frequently presented more favourable responses to treatment and anatomical location was not associated with lesion reduction overall. The intervention duration generally ranged between one to two years. In conclusion, marsupialisation and decompression were mostly considered as preliminary treatments, followed by enucleation. Lesion reduction was generally considered insufficient for these techniques to be used as definitive therapies, although benefits concerning the diminished invasiveness of the secondary surgery were often proposed. • None of the four tested imaging platforms provided acceptable results in all patients. • Segmentation accuracy, quantitative results and qualitative score are related. • High-density lung regions account for the largest differences in quantitative metrics. • Lung segmentation accuracy impacts differently on different quantitative metrics. To assess the impact of lung segmentation accuracy in an automatic pipeline for quantitative analysis of CT images. Four different platforms for automatic lung segmentation based on convolutional neural network (CNN), region-growing technique and atlas-based algorithm were considered. The platforms were tested using CT images of 55 COVID-19 patients with severe lung impairment. Four radiologists assessed the segmentations using a 5-point qualitative score (QS). For each CT series, a manually revised reference segmentation (RS) was obtained. Histogram-based quantitative metrics (QM) were calculated from CT histogram using lung segmentationsfrom all platforms and RS. Dice index (DI) and differences of QMs (ΔQMs) were calculated between RS and other segmentations. Highest QS and lower ΔQMs values were associated to the CNN algorithm. However, only 45% CNN segmentations were judged to need no or only minimal corrections, and in only 17 cases (31%), automatic segmentations provided RS without manual corrections. Median values of the DI for the four algorithms ranged from 0.993 to 0.904. Significant differences for all QMs calculated between automatic segmentations and RS were found both when data were pooled together and stratified according to QS, indicating a relationship between qualitative and quantitative measurements. The most unstable QM was the histogram 90th percentile, with median ΔQMs values ranging from 10HU and 158HU between different algorithms. None of tested algorithms provided fully reliable segmentation. Segmentation accuracy impacts differently on different quantitative metrics, and each of them should be individually evaluated according to the purpose of subsequent analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• A new approach has been proposed to overcome limitations of quantitative metrics calculated from lung CT images. • New metrics, derived from physics assumptions and with physiological significance, are introduced. • New metrics show lower dependencies from CT-number and reduced inter and intra patient variability. • Quantitative metrics of lung COVID-19 diseases can be described by subdividing the organ into 24 sub-regions. Quantitative metrics in lung computed tomography (CT) images have been widely used, often without a clear connection with physiology. This work proposes a patient-independent model for the estimation of well-aerated volume of lungs in CT images (WAVE). A Gaussian fit, with mean (Mu.f) and width (Sigma.f) values, was applied to the lower CT histogram data points of the lung to provide the estimation of the well-aerated lung volume (WAVE.f). Independence from CT reconstruction parameters and respiratory cycle was analysed using healthy lung CT images and 4DCT acquisitions. The Gaussian metrics and first order radiomic features calculated for a third cohort of COVID-19 patients were compared with those relative to healthy lungs. Each lung was further segmented in 24 subregions and a new biomarker derived from Gaussian fit parameter Mu.f was proposed to represent the local density changes. WAVE.f resulted independent from the respiratory motion in 80% of the cases. Differences of 1%, 2% and up to 14% resulted comparing a moderate iterative strength and FBP algorithm, 1 and 3 mm of slice thickness and different reconstruction kernel. Healthy subjects were significantly different from COVID-19 patients for all the metrics calculated. Graphical representation of the local biomarker provides spatial and quantitative information in a single 2D picture. Unlike other metrics based on fixed histogram thresholds, this model is able to consider the inter- and intra-subject variability. Background: New technologies are available in MPI. Our aim was to evaluate their impact on the uniformity of normal myocardial uptake in the polar-map representation, over different count statistics, with and without the attenuation (AC) and scatter corrections (SC).Methods: A phantom study was performed using 5 Anger gamma cameras with filtered back projection or iterative reconstruction with resolution recovery (IRR), with or without SCAC; a D530c, with or without AC; and a D-SPECT. Count statistics ranged up to a quarter of the reference for the conventional gamma cameras and up to one half for the advanced scanners. Using polar maps, the segmental uptakes and their uncertainties, the 'global uniformity' of polar maps expressed as the coefficient of variation (COV) among the segmental uptakes and the anterior/inferior (ANT/INF) ratio were calculated.Results: Both segmental uptakes and their uncertainties did not depend on the count statistics in the range studied. An increase in the segmental uptakes was found from IRR to IRR + SCAC (78.0% ± 13.5% vs 86.1% ± 9.4%; P < .0001). COV was lower for D-SPECT (10.1% ± 0.5%) and after SCAC for both conventional (9.9% ± 3.0%) and advanced systems (8.9% ± 1.7%). The ANT/INF ratio was above 1 for IRR (1.12 ± 0.07) and fell slightly below 1 for IRR + SCAC (0.97 ± 0.05).Conclusions: To compare data from the analysis of polar maps across different systems will require the adoption of specific normality databases, developed for each system and reconstruction method employed. We prospectively investigated in adults the decompression of dentigerous cysts associated with impacted third molars at high risk of iatrogenic damage during extraction. The computerised calculated volumetric postoperative reductions measured by cone-beam computed tomography at four and eight months were correlated with the duration of treatment, initial volume, and patient’s age. We prospectively monitored 14 adult patients with 14 dentigerous cysts that were associated with impacted third molars, for eight months after decompression. The mean (SD) reduction in volume during the first eight months was 71 (14) % (51% after the first four months and 20% after the second four months), with a monthly reduction rate of 9%. Both the total decrease in volume (a) and the monthly rate of reduction (b) were significantly associated (p < 0.01) and linearly correlated with the duration of decompression [r (a) = −0.89, r (b) = −0.61] and initial volume [r (a) = r (b) = 0.92], but not with the patient’s age (p = 0.49) [r (a) = r (b) = 0.04]. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the image quality in cardiac 18F-FDG PET using the time of flight (TOF) and/or point spread function (PSF) modeling in the iterative reconstruction (IR).Methods: Three scanners and an anthropomorphic cardiac phantom with an insert simulating a transmural defect (TD) were used. Two sets of scans (with/without TD) were acquired, and four reconstruction schemes were considered: (1) IR; (2) IR + PSF, (3) IR + TOF, and (4) IR + TOF + PSF. LV wall thickness (FWHM), contrast between LV wall and inner chamber (C IC), and TD contrast in LV wall (C TD) were evaluated.Results: Tests of the reconstruction protocols showed a decrease in FWHM from IR (13 mm) to IR + PSF (11 mm); an increase in the C IC from IR (65%) to IR + PSF (71%) and from IR + TOF (72%) to IR + TOF + PSF (77%); and an increase in the C TD from IR + PSF (72%) to IR + TOF (75%) and to IR + TOF + PSF (77%). Tests of the scanner/software combinations showed a decrease in FWHM from Gemini_TF (13 mm) to Biograph_mCT (12 mm) and to Discovery_690 (11 mm); an increase in the C IC from Gemini_TF (65%) to Biograph_mCT (73%) and to Discovery_690 (75%); and an increase in the C TD from Gemini_TF/Biograph_mCT (72%) to Discovery_690 (77%).Conclusion: The introduction of TOF and PSF increases image quality in cardiac 18F-FDG PET. Background: This investigation used image data generated by an anthropomorphic phantom with a cardiac insert for a comparison between two solid state cameras: D-SPECT and D530c.Methods: For each camera, two sets (with and without a simulated transmural defect (TD)) of scans were acquired starting from the in vivo standard count statistics in the left ventricle (LV). Other two acquisitions corresponding to 150% and 50% of the reference count statistics were acquired. Five performance indices related to spatial resolution, contrast, and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were analyzed.Results: D-SPECT showed a lower LV wall thickness and an inferior sharpness than D530c. No significant differences were found in terms of contrast between LV wall and the inner cavity, TD contrast or CNR. No significant differences were observed in CNR when moving from the reference level of count statistics down to 50% or up to 150% of the counts acquired on the LV.Conclusions: Our results show that D-SPECT and D530c have different performances. The lack of differences in the image performance indices along the range of count statistics explored, indicates that there is the possibility for a further reduction in the injected activity and/or the acquisition time, for both systems.
