Abstract

We report the effect of calcination on the structural and optical properties of nanocrystalline NiO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by virtue of a single source precursor method at mild reaction conditions between nickel nitrate and sodium hydroxide. Composition, structure and morphology of the products were analyzed and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The ultra-violet visible (UV–vis) absorption peaks of NiO exhibited a large blue shift and the luminescent spectra had a strong and broad emission band centered at 328 nm. The intense band gap was also observed, with some spectral tuning, to give a range of absorption energies from 2.60 to 3.41 eV. The various functional groups present in the NiO nanorods were identified by FTIR analysis. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and the chemical composition of the samples the valence states of elements were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in detail. The electrochemical response of NiO proved that the nano-nickel has a high level of functionality due to its small size and higher electrochemical activity without any modifications. The above studies demonstrate the potential for the utilization of NiO nanoparticles as a promising material for opto-electronics applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We made an attempt to form a high quality epitaxial zinc oxide, diamond-like-carbon and graphene oxide composite thin-film on device substrate p -Si(1 0 0) using third-harmonic (Nd:YAG Ultraviolet) laser at single footstep. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique using 366 nm (energy~150 mJ), vacuum 10 −6 mbar has been used to grow these films in reactive gas oxygen with argon (O 2 |Ar) ambiance. Synthesized thin-films were investigated systematically by fingerprint technique of confocal micro-Raman and field emission studies. As synthesized pure ZnO, nanocomposite thin films like DLC/ZnO and GO/ZnO shows the enhanced field emission (F-E) performances in this present study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: In this paper, a systematic study of structural, morphological, phononic, vibrational and optical properties of Zn1−x Cr x O nanostructures has been reported. These particles are synthesized through simple sol–gel chemical technique at low temperature using simply available laboratory chemicals i,e zinc acetate and sodium hydroxide. The detailed structural studies carried out by X-ray diffraction method (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that the as-synthesized nanoparticles are well-crystalline and possessing hexagonal wurtzite structure in 54–57nm range. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows the synthesized nanostrucures were grown in high density with less agglomeration and their different morphologies observed after doping. The presences of functional groups were characterized by employing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Compared with the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of the undoped ZnO, the peak position of ultraviolet (UV) emission of the Cr-doped ZnO nanostructures exhibits remarkable blue shift, also confirmed by Raman studies, and the deep level emission band was sharply suppressed. Band gap of synthesized samples has been evaluated using DRS (UV–Vis mode). It is found that the band gap increases as Cr doping took place which is attributed to the combined effect of size reduction and doping. The synthesized Cr x Zn1−x O nanostructures showed potential applications in destruction of bacteria. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: Monodispersed spherical particles of chromium (III) oxide, α-Cr2O3, were successfully synthesized from a diluted solution of KCr(SO4)2·12H2O using the Aqueous Chemical Growth (ACG) technique. The spherical α-Cr2O3 particles obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy for structural, surface morphological, chemical, and physical properties, as a function of deposition time. The XRD and Raman spectroscopy showed that aging had no apparent effect on the structure of the obtained uniform fine (in the range of micron–nano-level)-spherical particles of α-Cr2O3. The use of SEM demonstrated that aging had a clear influence on the size and the particles size distribution. Accordingly, the time dependence of the average diameter of α-Cr2O3 spherical particles follows the d3 law as required for diffusion-limited Ostwald ripening. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
