The spatio-temporal resolution of atmospheric forcing plays a key role in the accuracy of simulated storm surges with hydrodynamic numerical models. Here, we generate five hydrodynamic hindcasts of coastal storm surges along the European Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea coasts, forced with atmospheric fields of varying temporal (hourly and daily) and spatial (0.25 ° to 2 °) resolution since 1940. Our results, that are validated with insitu tide gauge observations, show that storm surges obtained with daily forcing underestimate the magnitude of coastal extreme sea level events by up to 50% compared to hourly simulations and observations. Nevertheless, low-resolution simulations capture the temporal variability of storm surges, including strong episodes. Furthermore, taking advantage of the consistent set of coastal storm surge hindcasts, we demonstrate that storm surges forced with daily mean atmospheric fields, when bias corrected via quantile mapping, provide accurate values of daily maxima as calculated by a high-resolution hindcast. This transformation paves the way to obtain daily maxima storm surge estimates from low-resolution atmospheric fields, as those typically provided by large-scale and global climate models, at a lower computational cost. • Forcing resolution affects storm surge modelling accuracy. • Daily forcing underestimate extremes by up to 50% vs. hourly forcing. • Bias-corrected daily surges match high-resolution daily maxima. A dynamical wind-wave climate simulation covering the North Atlantic Ocean and spanning the whole 21st century under the A1B scenario has been compared with a set of statistical projections using atmospheric variables or large scale climate indices as predictors. As a first step, the performance of all statistical models has been evaluated for the present-day climate; namely they have been compared with a dynamical wind-wave hindcast in terms of winter Significant Wave Height (SWH) trends and variance as well as with altimetry data. For the projections, it has been found that statistical models that use wind speed as independent variable predictor are able to capture a larger fraction of the winter SWH inter-annual variability (68% on average) and of the long term changes projected by the dynamical simulation. Conversely, regression models using climate indices, sea level pressure and/or pressure gradient as predictors, account for a smaller SWH variance (from 2.8% to 33%) and do not reproduce the dynamically projected long term trends over the North Atlantic. Investigating the wind-sea and swell components separately, we have found that the combination of two regression models, one for wind-sea waves and another one for the swell component, can improve significantly the wave field projections obtained from single regression models over the North Atlantic. The new gridded Mediterranean sea level anomaly product recently released by AVISO (DT14) is evaluated and compared with the earlier version (DT10) at which it is aimed to substitute. Differences between the two products are found along coastal regions, where the new version captures more variability (up to 10% more) and trends locally differ by up to 1 mm/yr for the altimetric period. Coastal tide gauge observations have therefore been used as the basis for quantifying changes in DT14. Correlation and variance reduction in available monthly tide gauge time series are improved in more than 80% of the selected sites by up to 0.2 and 5 cm 2 , respectively. This resulted in an overall higher skill to recover coastal low frequency (with periods larger than a few months) sea level signals. Results for higher/lower order percentiles were also explored and showed different performances depending on the site, although with a slight overall improvement. A comparison with tide gauges on a daily basis using wavelet analysis reveals that altimetry gridded products are not capable of recovering higher frequency (a few days) coastal sea level signals despite some advances have been achieved thanks to the daily temporal sampling of DT14. Abstract: Long term sea level changes in the Okhotsk, Japan/East, East China and Yellow Seas have been explored based on mean monthly values of sea level from tide gauge and altimetry measurements. The analysis of low frequency sea level variability reveals clearly differentiated areas: the Okhotsk Sea and the northern sector of the Japan/East Sea display lower sea level variances and no sea level rise. The southern Japan/East Sea presents larger sea level variability associated with the circulation regime of the warm current entering through the Tsushima Strait and inter-annual sea level variations that are driven by steric and atmospheric changes. The largest sea level variances are found in the Yellow Sea due to the effect of atmospheric forcing over the continental shelf. Inter-annual variability is spatially varying within the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea and is mainly related to the steric sea level changes. Regional mean sea level indices have been synthesized for each area using the longest tide gauge records and have revealed correlations between the southern Japan/East and Yellow Seas with PDO and NP climatic indices. Linear trends at coastal sites in the Japan/East, East China and Yellow Seas show a rather heterogeneous pattern, with values between −1.5 and 5.5mm/yr for the period 1960–2000. During the period 1993–2008 linear trends derived from coastal tide gauges and from altimetry observations are coherent and reveal a southwards increasing pattern with maximum averaged values reached at the Yellow Sea (4.9±1.9mm/yr) followed by the Japan/East Sea (3.8±0.9mm/yr). Decadal rates of sea level change show distinct behaviour among basins as well as with the global average. Abstract: Sea level extremes and their temporal variability have been explored based on the hourly measurements at Marseille tide gauge for the period 1885–2008. A careful quality check has first been applied to the observations to ensure consistency of the record by eliminating outliers and datum shifts. Yearly percentiles have been used to investigate long-term trends of extremes revealing that secular variations in extremes are linked to mean sea level changes. The associated decadal changes show discrepancies between mean sea level trend and extreme fluctuations, due to the influence of the atmospheric forcing. A local regression model based on the generalized Pareto distribution has been applied to derive trends in return levels. The 50-years return levels reach values between 80 and 120cm. The most significant changes in return levels are characterized by an increase since the 1970s. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: High frequency sea level observations at four coastal sites at the Balearic Islands (three in Mallorca and one in Menorca) have been used to examine the external forcing responsible for above normal seiches in certain harbours. Anomalously amplified harbour seiches in this region are known to be mainly associated with the passage of atmospheric pressure perturbations that generate long ocean waves in the open sea that travel northeastward, in the direction from Mallorca to Menorca. In Ciutadella Harbour (Menorca), sea level oscillations regularly reach amplitudes that are potentially dangerous to harbour infrastructure and boats. At other sites, seiches are normally smaller but have similar behaviour, indicating a local response to the external forcing. This external energy formed during the large amplitude events has been estimated based on spectral analysis of coastal measurements and found to have periods predominantly in the range of 5–50min. Forcing characteristics differ among events but are similar for the same event, even for sites located far apart. Near identical responses are found for two specific sites, Ciutadella (Menorca) and Cala Ratjada (Mallorca). This suggests that sea level measurements at Cala Ratjada could be used to forecast destructive events in Ciutadella Harbour as part of a Mediterranean Tsunami Warning System ICG/NEAMTWS. Abstract: Porous substrates made of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBHV) were prepared by a particulate leaching method. After removing the salt by extraction in water, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry and imaging were performed on sets of PHBHV substrates immersed in phosphate-buffered solution during 3 months at different time points. Polarized optical microscopy studies were performed on thin sections, 25 and 5 μm, of the PHBHV samples. The results of NMR relaxometry showed two 1H nuclei populations, well distinguishable on the free induction decay (FID), due to the different decay time constants, a factor of 102 apart. Thus, it was possible to separate the two populations, giving separate distributions of T 1 relaxation times. One population could be associated with water protons in the pores and the other to macromolecular protons. The distributions of T 1 and T 2 of the water proton shifted to lower values with increasing immersion time to a constant value after 30 days. The results obtained by NMR imaging showed an initial increase in the apparent porosity, reaching a plateau after 25 days of immersion. This increase is attributed mainly to the absorption of water in the microporosity as supported by the results of the relaxometry measurements and shown by scanning electron microscopy. The average porosity measured by NMR imaging at the plateau, 78±3%, is slightly higher than that determined by optical microscopy, 73±9%, which may be due to the fact that the latter method did not resolve the microporosity. Overall, the results suggest that at early stages after immersing the scaffolds in the aqueous medium, first 30 days approximately, NMR imaging could underestimate the porosity of the substrate. Abstract: The general features of the resonant response for a given basin, including the determination of the normal modes and relative amplification of incoming long waves can be easily determined by using a numerical model. However, when the relative role of the different geometric parameters want to be studied, the use of analytical solutions becomes extremely useful. An analytical model is developed to determine the coupled oscillations between two rectangular basins connected through a gap, when only one of them is opened to the ocean. This geometry resembles the topographic features of Ciutadella inlet and its adjacent sub-basin (Cala Busquets) in Menorca, Balearic Islands. The analytical solutions show a good agreement with numerical simulations and capture well the changes induced by some hypothetical modifications of Ciutadella–Cala Busquets system. The agreement shown justifies the use of the analytical model as a basis for the discussion on the influence of the geometrical parameters in the normal mode characteristics of the coupled system. Abstract In spite of the recent advances and the current perspectives of satellite radar altimetry to reach the coastline and monitor coastal sea level changes, this space-borne technology remains geocentric by essence. In contrast, the quantity that matters for coastal management and society is relative sea level. That is, the sea level relative to the land, as measured by conventional tide gauges. However, two important issues are associated with the use of tide gauges. First, supplemental information is required to separate vertical land motion from ocean climate signals in tide gauge records, and hence to understand the causes of future coastal sea level changes and their relative importance. This can be provided by space-borne geodetic techniques, for instance installing a permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna at the tide gauge. Second, vertical land motion can show local spatial patterns, which limits the spatial validity of the point-wise information at the GPS station. Using Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and high-precision GPS data, the above-mentioned limitations were addressed in the case study of Brest (France). Our findings show that, over the past decades, Brest and its surroundings are overall stable, in agreement with the geological setting, except for the embankment areas of the commercial and military harbours. The GPS-calibrated InSAR results were then further combined with geocentric satellite radar altimetry data to obtain relative sea level trends along the Brest coastline with an unprecedented high-spatial resolution of 200 m. Our approach is applicable beyond the case study of Brest, especially in coastal areas where tide gauge data are not available, provided satellite data are. • This is the first reported case of Brevundimona aurantiaca infective endocarditis (IE) in humans. • This is the first report of IE acquired by water dispenser of a domestic refrigerator. • Complicated IE affecting the mitroaortic curtain, requiring a UFO procedure, is reported. Infective endocarditis (IE) is a feared life-threatening complication that requires a multidisciplinary approach. Although a variety of microorganisms have caused IE, Brevundimonas aurantiaca human infection has never been reported previously. Background Excessive alcohol consumption is a well-known aetiology of atrial arrhythmias but there is little information concerning the prevalence or incidence of malignant ventricular arrhythmias in alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM). This study sought to investigate incidence and predictive factors of ventricular arrhythmias in ACM. Methods Retrospective observational study of the clinical characteristics and long-term arrhythmic events in 282 consecutive patients with ACM (94 individuals) and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM) (188 individuals) evaluated between 1993 and 2011. Results During a median follow-up of 38 months (IQR:12–77), 42 patients died and 79 underwent heart transplantation [31 (33%) with ACM vs 90 (48%) with IDCM; p = 0.017]. A total of 37 (13%) patients [18 (19%) ACM vs 20 (11%) IDCM; p = 0.048] suffered malignant ventricular arrhythmias. On multivariate analysis, left bundle branch block (LBBB) (OR 2.4; CI95%: 1.2–5; p = 0.015) and alcoholic aetiology (OR 2.3; CI95%: 1.1–4.5; p = 0.026) were the only independent predictors of malignant ventricular arrhythmic events. A total of 18 (19%) ACM patients experienced 20 malignant ventricular arrhythmic events (4 aborted SCD, 8 SCD and 8 appropriate ICD therapies). At baseline evaluation, the only independent predictor of malignant ventricular arrhythmias in ACM patients was LBBB (OR 11.2; CI95%: 2.6–50; p = 0.001). No malignant ventricular arrhythmias were recorded during follow-up in ACM patients if left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) had increased or remained ≥ 40%. Conclusions Malignant ventricular arrhythmias are more frequent in ACM than in IDCM. LBBB identifies ACM patients with increased risk of SCD. Leishmania infantum is the main etiological agent of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis in the Mediterranean region, including Portugal, but, given its low isoenzyme diversity in this country, the population structure is poorly known. A set of 14 polymorphic microsatellite markers was studied on 136 Portuguese Leishmania strains isolated from different hosts, geographic regions and different clinical forms. A total of 108 different genotypes were found, which is a degree of genetic diversity comparable to other regions, even within zymodeme MON-1. A single most common genotype was detected in 1:5 of all strains, which, with a greater number of multi-strain genotypes found in the Lisbon Metropolitan Region, particularly for human strains, was suggestive of the occurrence of clonal transmission. In addition, a high re-infection rate was found among HIV+ patients. Model based analysis by STRUCTURE uncovered two main populations (populations A and B, composed of MON-1 and non-MON-1 strains, respectively), with great genetic diversity between them, and two MON-1 sub-populations (A1 and A2). High inbreeding coefficients were found in these populations, although strains with mixed ancestry were identified, suggesting that recombination also plays a role in the epidemiology of this species in Portugal. Some but limited geographical differentiation was observed, with groups of strains from the same regions clustering together, particularly those from canine origin. Our results show that L. infantum isolates from Portugal present microsatellite diversity comparable to other regions and that different transmission models play a role in its epidemiology, from clonal transmission to recombination. In addition, although Portugal is a small country, mobility of people and animals is high and Leishmania can be probably easily disseminated between infected hosts throughout the country, two instances of seemingly local restricted transmission were identified. Abstract: In coastal low-lying urban areas, vertical ground motions can significantly exacerbate the hazards related to sea-level rise. However, their spatial extent, their temporal evolution, and even sometimes their existence are often poorly known. This study aims to monitor variable urban ground motion (uplift and subsidence) from 1993 to 2010 in the metropolitan area of Manila, Philippines. Because high subsidence rates have been reported in this city in previous studies, conventional Differential SAR Interferometry (DInSAR) was applied with an adapted stacking procedure to the archive of ERS and Envisat satellite images to produce surface deformation-velocity maps for different periods. The results showed that the city is locally affected by vertical ground motions on the order of 15cm/yr. Moreover, the spatio-temporal evolution of the ground-motion phenomena is highly nonlinear. These results are in good agreement with previous studies focused on groundwater use in Manila and in the Marikina Fault Valley, suggesting a plausible interpretation of the processes causing surface motion. Incidentally, the ground motions are affecting the locations of several geodetic instruments, including a tide gauge with sea-level records starting in 1902, two permanent GPS (Global Positioning System) stations, and a DORIS (Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite) station. A major implication of those large and locally variable ground motions is that they impede the use of the nearby GPS and DORIS data to correct the tide-gauge records and to derive robust sea-level trends associated with climate change. Abstract: Currents, particle fluxes and ecology were studied in the Palamós submarine canyon (also known as the Fonera canyon), located in the northwestern Mediterranean. Seven mooring arrays equipped with current meters and sediment traps were deployed along the main canyon axis, on the canyon walls and on the adjacent slope. Additionally, local and regional hydrographic cruises were carried out. Current data showed that mean near surface and mid-depth currents were oriented along the mean flow direction (NE–SW), although at 400 and 1200m depth within the canyon current reversals were significant, indicating a more closed circulation inside the canyon. Mean near-bottom currents were constrained by the local bathymetry, especially at the canyon head. The most significant frequency at all levels was the inertial frequency. A second frequency of about three days, attributed to a topographic wave, was observed at all depths, suggesting that this wave was probably not trapped near the bottom. The current field observed during the most complete survey revealed a meandering pattern with cyclonic vorticity just upstream from and within the canyon. The associated vertical velocity ranged between 10 and 20m/day and was constrained to the upper 300m. This latter feature, together with other computations, suggests that during this survey the meander was not induced by the canyon but by some kind of instability of the mean flow. In the canyon, suspended sediment concentration, downward particle fluxes, chlorophyll and particulate C and N were significantly higher up-canyon from about 1200m depth than offshore, defining, along with the different hydrodynamics, two canyon domains: one from the canyon head to about 1200m depth more affected by the canyon confinement and the other deeper than 1200m depth more controlled by the mean flow and the shelf-slope front. The higher near-bottom downward total mass fluxes were recorded in the canyon axis at 1200m depth along with sharp turbidity increases and are related to sediment gravity flows. During the deployment period, the increase in downward particle fluxes occurred by mid-November, when a severe storm took place. On the canyon walls at 1200m depth, suspended sediment concentrations, downward particle fluxes, chlorophyll and particulate C and N were higher on the southern wall than on the northern wall inversely to the current’s energy. This could be caused by an upward water supply on the southern canyon wall and/or the mean flow interacting with the canyon bathymetry. In the swimmers collected by the sediment traps, the dominant species was an elasipod holothurian, which has not been recorded in other canyons or elsewhere in the Mediterranean, indicating particular speciation.
