Architectured wires containing 61 restacked Copper Clad Aluminum (CCA) wires were cold-drawn down to a diameter of 1 mm without intermediate annealing. Samples were taken at intermediate diameters of 3 mm and 1.7 mm to observe the wire structure at different steps. Independently of the wire diameter, the structure did not exhibit any porosity and initial CCA wires were uniformly distributed inside the structure with constant equivalent diameters. Post-elaboration annealing treatments performed on CCA and architectured wires led to the formation of Al 2 Cu, AlCu and Al 4 Cu 9 intermetallic compounds (IMC). It was shown that IMC growth kinetics do not depend on the wire diameter, indicating no marked influence of the plastic deformation. The volume fraction of IMC strongly increased with the reduction of the diameter and impacted the electrical resistivity of the architectured wire. The equivalent resistivity has been easily computed by a linear rule of mixture model, with three electrical resistances in parallel (Al, Cu and IMC), weighted by their respective volume fraction. This model allowed extracting a mean resistivity of IMCs of 4.5 μΩ·cm. It also demonstrated that this restacking drawing process, without any intermediate annealing treatment is an interesting method for the elaboration of architectured wires with optimized functional properties. This paper details in-situ studies of modifications induced by swift heavy ion irradiation in α-Al2O3. This complex behaviour is intermediary between the behaviour of amorphizable and non-amorphizable materials, respectively. A unique combination of irradiation experiments was performed at the IRRSUD beam line of the GANIL facility, with three different characterisation techniques: in-situ UV–Vis absorption, in-situ grazing incidence X-Ray diffraction and ex-situ transmission electron microscopy. This allows a complete study of point defects, and by depth profile of structural and microstructural modifications created on the trajectory of the incident ion. The α-Al2O3 crystals have been irradiated by 92 MeV Xenon and 74 MeV Krypton ions, the irradiation conditions have been chosen rather similar with an energy range where the ratio between electronic and nuclear stopping power changes dramatically as function of depth penetration. The main contribution of electronic excitation, above the threshold for track formation, is present beneath the surface to finally get almost only elastic collisions at the end of the projected range. Amorphization kinetics by the overlapping of multiple ion tracks is observed. In the crystalline matrix, long range strains, unit-cell swelling, local microstrain, domain size decrease, disordering of oxygen sublattice as well as colour centre formation are found. This study highlights the relationship between ion energy losses into a material and its response. While amorphization requires electronic stopping values above a certain threshold, point defects are predominantly induced by elastic collisions, while some structural modifications of the crystalline matrix, such as unit-cell swelling, are due to contribution of both electronic and nuclear processes. The angle formed by ship wakes is usually found close to the value predicted by Kelvin, α = 19.47 °. However we recently showed that the angle of maximum wave amplitude can be significantly smaller at large Froude number. We show how the finite range of wavenumbers excited by the ship explains the observed decrease of the wake angle as 1/Fr for Fr > 0.5 , where Fr = U / gL is the Froude number based on the hull length L . At such large Froude numbers, sailing boats are in the planing regime, and a decrease of the wave drag is observed. We discuss in this paper the possible connection between the decrease of the wake angle and the decrease of the wave drag at large Froude number. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study investigates the mechanical behavior of severely plastic-deformed Cu-Al composite wires with different diameters and heat-treatments. Each composite holds 61 restacked copper-clad aluminum wires. The bimetal composites were cold-worked up to diameters ranging from 1 mm to 3 mm, without any intermediate heat treatment. All the wires contain 61 hexagonal Cu-Al fibers with a continuous copper network extended from the outer surface into the center of the samples. Tensile tests were then performed on the as-drawn and heat treated wires. The latter were treated at 400 °C for 30 min and 6 h. The heat treatments firstly induce recrystallization in both constituents, giving rise to a fine-grained microstructure and secondly prompt the formation of several intermetallics. Without heat treatment after processing, the architectured composites exhibit a ductility value similar to the conventional copper-clad aluminum wires and larger yield stresses compared to them, regardless of the diameter. The intermetallic compounds, forming as a result of heat treatment, affect the yield stress, ductility and strain hardening mechanisms. Finally, the results are discussed in terms of grain size, texture, intermetallics volume fraction and mechanical coupling between the phases. • New architectured Cu-Al wires are proposed and characterized. • An extensive microstructural characterization is performed. • Improved mechanical properties are revealed compared to copper clad aluminum wires. • Mechanical properties depends on the process, microstructure and composite effect.
