Food supply chains face increasing demands for transparency and sustainability. The Digital Product Passport (DPP), under development in the European Union, can contribute to this purpose by sharing relevant product information with all stakeholders. This research aims to develop a digital twin-based architecture for DPPs and design a prototype for GEOfood products that includes environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Our methodology follows the design science research paradigm. The work was conducted in cooperation with a UNESCO Global Geopark and the GEOfood seal, which certifies food production in regions with unique geological relevance protected by UNESCO. The results include (1) an architecture for digital twin-based DPPs and (2) the design of a DPP prototype for GEOfood products. A formative evaluation was conducted through qualitative interviews with industry experts. Our contribution also includes the integration of social and economic dimensions into the DPP, extending the traditional focus on environmental sustainability data and exemplifying its adoption in supply chains of certified products. Practitioners may find our results inspiring for digital infrastructures capable of real-time monitoring and automatic generation of DPPs that adhere to the tenets of circular economy and human-centric production. We present a stochastic method for efficiently computing the solution of time-fractional partial differential equations (fPDEs) that model anomalous diffusion problems of the subdiffusive type. After discretizing the fPDE in space, the ensuing system of fractional linear equations is solved resorting to a Monte Carlo evaluation of the corresponding Mittag-Leffler matrix function. This is accomplished through the approximation of the expected value of a suitable multiplicative functional of a stochastic process, which consists of a Markov chain whose sojourn times in every state are Mittag-Leffler distributed. The resulting algorithm is able to calculate the solution at conveniently chosen points in the domain with high efficiency. In addition, we present how to generalize this algorithm in order to compute the complete solution. For several large-scale numerical problems, our method showed remarkable performance in both shared-memory and distributed-memory systems, achieving nearly perfect scalability up to 16 , 384 CPU cores. Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis and Leishmania infantum (= Leishmania chagasi ) are protozoa that cause American cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, respectively. These diseases show a high incidence in developing countries such as Brazil. The treatments used for leishmaniasis are still limited due to their high cost and toxicity. Currently, some natural products are considered an important alternative source of new leishmanicidal agents. Euterpe oleracea Martius, a palm producing black fruits, is frequently consumed in the Amazon region, as a juice, known as açai, with potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticonvulsant properties. Interestingly, the biological activity of clarified açai juice (EO) on L. (L.) amazonensis and L. infantum (= L. chagasi) is unknown. Therefore, the mechanism of anti-leishmanial action of EO has been evaluated on L. (L.) amazonensis and L. infantum (= L. chagasi) . EO reduced the number of promastigotes and caused morphological alterations, increased the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induced cell death phenotypes probably seems by apoptosis in the promastigotes of L. (L.) amazonensis (IC 50  = 1:40) and L. infantum (= L. chagasi) (IC 50  = 1:38). EO also presented activity against Leishmania amastigotes. Treatment with EO for 72 h strongly reduced IL-17 cytokine levels at all tested concentrations and decreased the number of intracellular amastigotes in macrophages infected with L. ( L.) amazonensis (IC 50  = 1:30) and L. infantum (= L. chagasi) (IC 50  = 1:38). Additionally, no cytotoxic effect was observed in murine macrophages treated with EO (72 h – CC 50  > 1:1). Our results demonstrated that EO has leishmanicidal activity against two different species that cause American visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis without cytotoxic effects for the host cell. Turf is an important component of the urban and rural landscape. The natural plant formations/biomes that it mimics are the tropical savanna, the temperate grasslands (steppe and the prairies) and the tundra. Turf in a higher or lower degree provides all the ecosystem services of the other types of vegetation. Vegetation ecosystem services that have been previously emphasized include functional, aesthetical, recreational, social, and economic services as well as services related to people psychological or physical health. The purpose of this review is to gather updated information on turf ecosystem services, mainly on how they compare to other types of vegetation, or substitutes, and to suggest some future trends/areas of research. Turf has a unique role in aesthetics and, definitely, provides an irreplaceable surface for recreational sports/activities. From the available information, turf seems to have a higher potential than other types of vegetation for reducing runoff, increasing infiltration, purifying water from sediments and pollutants, controlling erosion, improving soil quality and reducing fire hazards. For the lawn owners the main turf benefits are: first the enhanced property aesthetics, second the increment in property value and third the provision of a recreation area. Turf, as all vegetation, uses water. Without the water its benefits may be reduced or annihilated. Mimicking nature may offer some solutions for saving water: summer brown lawns that green up in the fall, although losing some of the turf benefits, may be an appropriate choice where irrigation is not feasible and are worth some research. Research, should also be done on lawns using a mix of grasses and legumes: the presence of legumes may avoid N fertilization and, possibly allows for clippings removal and usage as biofuel, while keeping the soil accumulation of carbon, preventing N leaching and turning turf’s carbon footprint even more positive. Convulsive seizures (CS) are deleterious consequences of acute cerebral insults and prejudicial events in epilepsy, affecting more than 50 million people worldwide. Molecular mechanisms of depression and epilepsy include an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission provoking oxidative stress (OS). OS is intimately linked to the origin and evolution of CS and is modulated by antidepressant and anticonvulsant drugs. Although newer antidepressants have exhibited a possible protective role in CS, studies analyzing serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors merit to be further investigated. Thus, this study challenged the traditional model of pentylenetetrazol-induced CS, with only one administration of duloxetine. Male Swiss mice were treated with duloxetine (dose corresponding to the therapeutic range for human depression or greater, by allometric calculation; 10, 20 or 40 mg/kg), 30 min before pentylenetetrazol. Behavioral and electroencephalographic alterations were monitored. Lipid peroxidation, nitrites and catalase and superoxidase activities were measured in cortex. Behavioral and electroencephalographic results suggested a possible biphasic effect of duloxetine on CS, with anticonvulsant actions at therapeutic doses and a proconvulsant effect at higher doses. Duloxetine (20 mg/kg) also prevented lipid peroxidation and decreased catalase and superoxide dismutase activities in the cerebral cortex, with no influence on nitrites levels. These data demonstrated an anticonvulsant effect of duloxetine in CS for the first time. This extra anticonvulsant effect may allow the doses of anticonvulsants to be reduced, causing fewer side effects and possibly decreasing morbidity and mortality due to drug interactions in polytherapy. Açai ( Euterpe oleracea Mart.), a highly consumed fruit in Amazon, is from a common palm with remarkable antioxidant properties. Because oxidative stress and seizures are intimately linked, this study investigated the potential neuroprotective and anticonvulsant effects of commercial clarified açai juice (EO). EO did not alter spontaneous locomotor activity. Four doses of EO were sufficient to increase latencies to both first myoclonic jerk and first generalized tonic–clonic seizure and significantly decrease the total duration of tonic-clonic seizures caused by pentylenetetrazol administration. Also, electrocortical alterations provoked by pentylenetetrazol were prevented, significantly decreasing amplitude of discharges and frequencies above 50 Hz. EO was also able to completely prevent lipid peroxidation in the cerebral cortex, showing a potent direct scavenging property. These results demonstrate for the first time that E. oleracea significantly protects against seizures and seizure-related oxidative stress, indicating an additional protection for humans who consume this fruit. Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of our study is to describe intellectual functioning in three common childhood epilepsy syndromes – frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) and benign epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (BECTS). And also to determine the influence of epilepsy related variables, type of epilepsy, age at epilepsy onset, duration and frequency of epilepsy, and treatment on the scores. Methods: Intellectual functioning was examined in a group of 90 children with epilepsy (30 FLE, 30 CAE, 30 BECTS), aged 6–15 years, and compared with a control group (30). All subjects obtained a Full Scale IQ≥70 and they were receiving no more than two antiepileptic medications. Participants completed the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Third Edition. The impact of epilepsy related variables (type of epilepsy, age at epilepsy onset, duration of epilepsy, seizure frequency and anti-epileptic drugs) on intellectual functioning was examined. Results: Children with FLE scored significantly worse than controls on WISC-III Verbal IQ, Full Scale IQ and Processing Speed Index. There was a trend for children with FLE to have lower intelligence scores than CAE and BECTS groups. Linear regression analysis showed no effect for age at onset, frequency of seizures and treatment. Type of epilepsy and duration of epilepsy were the best indicators of intellectual functioning. Conclusion: It is crucial that children with FLE and those with a longer active duration of epilepsy are closely monitored to allow the early identification and evaluation of cognitive problems, in order to establish adequate and timely school intervention plans. Abstract: Plant growth is driven by the rate of photosynthetic uptake of carbon, the loss of carbon and by allocation of photoassimilates to certain plant compartments, which leads to particular morphologies. Performance, vitality and persistence of a plant are affected by this partitioning process and vice versa. Under harsh climatic conditions such as cold temperature and seasonal drought, perennial plants often invest more in below-ground than above-ground structures. Festuca orthophylla in the subtropical Bolivian Altiplano does not match this ‘rule’. This species produces tall, evergreen tussocks, persisting decades and dominating the semi-arid, Andean landscape over thousands of square kilometers at elevation between 3600 and 4600ma.s.l. The shallow rooting system represents only 21% of total biomass. The tussock base (root-stocks composed of the network of branching below-ground shoots and tiller meristems) comprises 28% of the total biomass. Although located partly below the soil surface, much of this biomass compartment is functionally above-ground (the basis of shoots). With their below-ground position, tiller meristems are protected against grazing and trampling by camelids as well as, to some degree, against fire and freezing. Fifty one percent of the biomass is above-ground (live leaves and inflorescences). In terms of phytomass (including attached necromass), 75% is above-ground. On average, a tussock consists of 3200 tightly packed total tillers (56% are live). Tillers emerge regularly intravaginally (i.e. within the leaf sheath of an existing mother tiller), resulting in dense canopies with strong self-shading: eighty percent of green foliage experience less than 50% of the incident light. The most important Altiplano plant species thus has morphological traits in favour of protection and survival rather than productivity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We tested the effect on epiphyte growth of a doubling of pre-industrial CO2 concentration (280 vs. 560ppm) combined with two light (three fold) and two nutrition (ten fold) treatments under close to natural humid conditions in daylight growth cabinets over 6months. Across co-treatments and six species, elevated CO2 increased relative growth rates by only 6% (p =0.03). Although the three C3 species, on average, grew 60% faster than the three CAM species, the two groups did not significantly differ in their CO2 response. The two Orchidaceae, Bulbophyllum (CAM) and Oncidium (C3) showed no CO2 response, and three out of four Bromeliaceae showed a positive one: Aechmea (CAM, +32% p =0.08), Catopsis (C3, +11% p =0.01) and Vriesea (C3, +4% p =0.02). In contrast, the representative of the species-rich genus Tillandsia (CAM), which grew very well under experimental conditions, showed no stimulation. On average, high light increased growth by 21% and high nutrients by 10%. Interactions between CO2, light and nutrient treatments (low vs. high) were inconsistent across species. CO2 responsive taxa such as Catopsis, could accelerate tropical forest dynamics and increase branch breakage, but overall, the responses to doubling CO2 of these epiphytes was relatively small and the responses were taxa specific. Abstract: Techniques for experimental design of experiments for model discrimination constitute important tools for scientists and engineers, as analyzed phenomena can very often be described fairly well by different mathematical models. As interpretation and use of available experimental data depend on the model structure, techniques for design of experiments for selection of the best model are of fundamental importance. Besides, experiments must often be designed for estimation of model parameters and reduction of variances of model predictions (or parameter estimates). These two classes of experimental design techniques generally lead to different experimental designs, although model discrimination and reduction of variances of parameter estimates are closely related to each other. In this work the posterior covariance matrix of difference between model predictions is taken into account during the design for model discrimination for the first time. The obtained results show that the model discrimination power becomes much higher when the posterior covariance matrix of difference between model predictions are considered during the experimental design, increasing the capability of model discrimination and simultaneously leading to improved parameter estimates. Abstract: This work aims to study the non-oxidative conversion of methane in a HMCM-22 zeolite and to compare its activity and stability when using hydrogen regeneration cycles. Catalytic tests were carried with pure methane at atmospheric pressure and 973K, with WHSV of . The use of hydrogen regeneration cycles promoted the increase on catalyst stability by decreasing coke deposits, especially the non-carbidic coke associated to Brønsted acid sites. The use of hydrogen regeneration cycles also affected the selectivity to products, with increase of naphthalene selectivity at the expense of benzene one. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A novel algorithm for computing the action of a matrix exponential over a vector is proposed. The algorithm is based on a multilevel Monte Carlo method, and the vector solution is computed probabilistically generating suitable random paths which evolve through the indices of the matrix according to a suitable probability law. The computational complexity is proved in this paper to be significantly better than the classical Monte Carlo method, which allows the computation of much more accurate solutions. Furthermore, the positive features of the algorithm in terms of parallelism were exploited in practice to develop a highly scalable implementation capable of solving some test problems very efficiently using high performance supercomputers equipped with a large number of cores. For the specific case of shared memory architectures the performance of the algorithm was compared with the results obtained using an available Krylov-based algorithm, outperforming the latter in all benchmarks analyzed so far. Objective: To analyze biomechanical, histologic, and histochemical properties of anterior fragments of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and to correlate them with the maximum transverse diameter (MTD) and symptoms associated to the aneurysms. Methods: Fragments of the anterior aneurysm wall were obtained from 90 patients submitted to open repair of AAA of degenerative etiology from 2004 to 2009 in the Clinics Hospital of São Paulo University Medical School. Two specimens were produced from the fragments: one for histologic analysis for quantification of collagen fibers, elastic fibers, smooth muscle cells, and degree of inflammatory activity and the other for uniaxial tensile test to assess biomechanical failure properties of the material, such as strength, tension, and stress. Cases were classified according to symptoms and to the AAA MTD. Results: Fragments from AAA with MTD < 5.5 cm showed higher values for biomechanical failure properties than those of AAA with MTD < 5.5 cm (strength, 5.32 ± 2.07 × 4.1 ± 2.41 N; tension, 13.83 ± 5.58 × 10.82 ± 6.48 N/cm; stress, 103.02 × 77.03 N/cm2; P < .05). No differences were observed between the groups in relation to failure strain (0.41 ± 0.12 × 0.37 ± 0.14; P = .260) and thickness of the fragments (1.58 ± 0.41 × 1.53 ± 0.42 mm; P = .662). The average values of fiber compositions of all the fragments were as follows: collagen fibers, 44.34 ± 0.48% and 61.85 ± 10.14% (Masson trichrome staining and Picrosirius red staining, respectively); smooth muscle cells, 3.46 ± 2.23% (immunohistochemistry/alpha-actin); and elastic fibers, less than 1% (traces) (Verhoeff-van Gieson staining). No differences in fiber percentages (collagen, elastic, and smooth muscle) were observed in fragments from AAA with MTD <5.5 cm and <5.5 cm, but more intense inflammatory activity was seen in larger AAA (grade 3; 70% × 28.6%; P = .011). Compared with asymptomatic aneurysms, symptomatic aneurysms showed no differences in the biomechanical failure properties (strength, 5.32 ± 2.36 × 4.65 ± 2.05 N; P = .155; tension, 14.08 ± 6.11 × 12.81 ± 5.77 N/cm; P = .154; stress, 103.02 × 84.76 N/cm2; P = .144), strain (0.38 ± 0.12 × 0.41 ± 0.13; P = .287), thickness of the fragments (1.56 ± 0.41 × 1.57 ± 0.41 mm; P = .848), and histologic composition (collagen fibers, 44.67 ± 11.17 × 44.02 ± 13.79%; P = .808; smooth muscle fibers, 2.52 × 2.35%; P = .751; elastic fibers, <1%) Conclusions: Fragments of the anterior wall from larger aneurysms were more resistant than those from smaller AAA, with no tissue properties that could explain this phenomenon in the histologic or histochemical analyses utilized. This work analyses the oscillations caused by harmonic pollution in isolated synchronous generators. The main contribution is founded on the identification and quantification of the electric torque magnitude, which goes on to become oscillated due to distorted currents arising from the non-linear loads. Besides this, this work presents the same analysis for voltage on the dq0 domain, currents induced on the damper windings, along with the oscillation on the load angle and field current. Abstract: Mg,Mn,Al-oxides with spinel structure, Al/(M2+ +Al) molar ratio of 0.25 and 0.50 and an Mn/Mg molar ratio of 0.30 have been evaluated as catalysts for SO x removal under conditions similar to those found in FCC units. The best performance was that of the sample with the higher aluminium content. The incorporation of CeO2 in this sample favored SO x uptake for short reaction times as well as the reduction of the sulfated catalysts. When the regeneration was started at 530°C, only H2S was observed as reaction product, but when this step started at 650°C, the release of SO2 preceded that of H2S, regardless of the chemical composition of the sample. As to the additive performance for successive reaction–regeneration cycles, the incorporation of CeO2 produced a less efficient catalyst with regard to the removal of the SO2 along the process, but with a higher regeneration efficiency and a lower formation of SO2 as regeneration product. Abstract: Parameter estimation procedures are very important in the chemical engineering field for development of mathematical models, since design, optimization and advanced control of chemical processes depend on model parameter values obtained from experimental data. Model nonlinearity makes the estimation of parameter and the statistical analysis of parameter estimates more difficult and more challenging. In this work, it is shown that many of these difficulties can be overcome with the use of heuristic optimization methods, such as the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. Parameter estimation problems are solved here with PSO and it is shown that the PSO method is efficient for both minimization and construction of the confidence region of parameter estimates. Moreover, it is shown that the elliptical approximation of confidence regions of nonlinear model parameters can be very poor sometimes and that more accurate likelihood confidence regions can be constructed with PSO, allowing for more reliable statistical analysis of the significance of parameter estimates.
