Food allergy (FA) is one of the most common chronic conditions in children with an increasing prevalence facilitated by the exposure to environmental factors in predisposed individuals. It has been hypothesized that the increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, containing high levels of dietary advanced glycation end products (AGEs), could facilitate the occurrence of FA. We sought to provide preclinical and clinical evidence on the potential role of AGEs in facilitating the occurrence of FA. Human enterocytes, human small intestine organ culture, and PBMCs from children at risk for allergy were used to investigate the direct effect of AGEs on gut barrier, inflammation, T H 2 cytokine response, and mitochondrial function. Intake of the 3 most common glycation products in Western diet foods, Nε-(carboxymethyl) lysine, Nε-(1-carboxyethyl) lysin, and Nδ-(5-hydro-5- methyl-4-imidazolone-2-yl)-ornithine (MG-H1), and the accumulation of AGEs in the skin were comparatively investigated in children with FA and in age-matched healthy controls. Human enterocytes exposed to AGEs showed alteration in gut barrier, AGE receptor expression, reactive oxygen species production, and autophagy, with increased transepithelial passage of food antigens. Small intestine organ cultures exposed to AGEs showed an increase of CD25+ cells and proliferating crypt enterocytes. PBMCs exposed to AGEs showed alteration in proliferation rate, AGE receptor activation, release of inflammatory and T H 2 cytokines, and mitochondrial metabolism. Significant higher dietary AGE intake and skin accumulation were observed children with FA (n = 42) compared with age-matched healthy controls (n = 66). These data, supporting a potential role for dietary AGEs in facilitating the occurrence of FA, suggest the importance of limiting exposure to AGEs children as a potential preventive strategy against this common condition. This paper deals with the problem of controlled atmospheric re-entry, which has recently gained growing interest from the aerospace scientific and industrial communities for the economic and environmental benefits related to the development of reusable space vehicles. In this context, an original technique based on the incremental formulation of the Model Predictive Control methodology is proposed to tackle the trajectory tracking problem of a small satellite equipped with a deployable heat shield in the de-orbiting phase, focusing on a range of altitude from 300 km to 130 km, i.e., before the atmosphere is dense enough to begin a terminal re-entry phase. The proposed control logic allows following a given pre-determined guidance law, limiting position offsets due to unmodelled disturbances or uncertainties in the knowledge of spacecraft parameters (e.g., drag coefficient). An extensive numerical simulation campaign to assess the control performances in different perturbing conditions has demonstrated its ability to reach a km-error level in the position error at the final altitude of 130 km. • Controlled deorbiting based on aerodynamic drag modulation is addressed. • An Incremental formulation of the MPC controller is proposed for trajectory-tracking. • Performance assessment is carried out in a realistic simulation environment. • The achieved tracking error is kept below 1 km at re-entry interface (130 km). This paper presents an experimental activity aimed at assessing performance of techniques for inertia and attitude parameters estimation of an uncooperative but known space target. The adopted experimental set-up includes a scaled-down 3D printed satellite mock-up, a spherical air bearing and a low-cost solid-state LIDAR. The experimental facility also comprises a motion capture system to obtain a benchmark of the pose (position and attitude) parameters and an ad-hoc designed passive balancing system to keep the centre of mass as close as possible to the centre of rotation. The LIDAR-based 3D point clouds, collected while the target rotates on the spherical air-bearing to reproduce the rotational dynamics of an almost-free rigid body, are processed to obtain pose and angular velocity estimate. Those data are used to determine the inertia properties of the target by solving a linear system based on the integral form of Euler equations. Performance and robustness of the algorithm for attitude and inertia properties estimation are assessed considering both the inertia benchmark provided by a high-fidelity CAD model of the target and the pose solution obtained from the motion tracking system and its extrinsic calibration with respect to the LIDAR. • The estimation of attitude and inertia parameters of an uncooperative space target is addressed. • A LIDAR-based algorithmic architecture is experimentally validated. • The design and calibration of the experimental set-up is described. • Errors below 10° and 20% are obtained for attitude and inertia parameter, respectively. This paper presents the trajectory control strategies for the de-orbiting and re-entry phases of a micro satellite equipped with a deployable and controlled aero-brake. They are framed in the design of the Italian space mission MISTRAL (MIcro-SaTellite with Air-Launchable Re-entry capabilities) developed under the supervision of the DAC-Campanian Aerospace District. The proposed control approach makes use of two different control strategies for the de-orbiting and re-entry phases, respectively. The former is based on a linear quadratic optimal control, whereas the latter is based on a model predictive control approach. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach which guarantees a good compromise between stability and performance during the mission phases of interest. • A control strategy for the de-orbiting and re-entry phase of a micro-satellite using a deployable aero-brake is proposed. • An LQR-based approach with state feedback is used for the de-orbiting phase. • An MPC approach with a terminal cost on the prediction time horizon is used for the re-entry phase. • Performance is assessed numerically by modelling both the entire GNC system and the satellite dynamics. • The achieved tracking error is compatible with the required landing accuracy of 250 km. Purpose: The aim of the study is to compare, at 10-year follow-up, the clinical and radiological outcomes of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with or without the addition of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) over the tendon-bone interface at the end of the surgical procedure.Methods: Of 53 patients recruited in the study, and randomly divided into 2 groups (PRP = 26; control = 27), 38 were re-evaluated at least 10 years after the index procedure. The clinical evaluation was carried out through: University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Shoulder Score, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Simple Shoulder Test, Constant-Murley Score (CMS), Single Assessment Numerical Evaluation (SANE), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and isometric strength in abduction, forward flexion and external rotation. Musculoskeletal ultrasonography had been used to evaluate the integrity of the repaired cuff.Results: A number of 38 (71%) patients (PRP = 17; control = 21) with a median age of 71 [64.75-76.50] years have been evaluated. Satisfaction at follow-up is high (90%), without statistically significant difference between the two groups. We report good and excellent clinical results in both groups (PRP vs control): CMS (81.62 [72.47-85.75] vs 77.97 [69.52-82.55] points), UCLA (34 [29.00-35.00] vs 33 [29.00-35.00] points), VAS (0.34 [0.00-1.85] vs 0.70 [0.00-2.45] cm). It was not possible to find a statistically significant difference for the variables analyzed, except for ASES and SANE. On average, 37% of the operated patients had a re-rupture at the ultrasound examination, regardless of the treatment group (P = 1.00). Compared with the previous radiological control at the 2-year follow-up, new retears occurred in 6% of the patients who received PRP treatment, whereas in the control group the percentage raises to 14% (P = .61).Conclusion: The clinical and radiological outcomes at the 10-year follow-up show a substantial uniformity of results between the 2 groups. The minor differences that had been observed at 2-year follow-up disappeared at long term. Future Active Debris Removal missions will require an autonomous spacecraft (chaser) to safely monitor at close distance, and then approach and dispose an inactive artificial space object (target). Since these targets are uncooperative, meaning that they cannot provide any hint or help to the chaser navigation system, such operations require the target-chaser relative state and the target inertia parameters to be accurately estimated relying only on measurements from active or passive Electro-Optical sensors. In this framework, this paper proposes an original multi-step architecture for the estimation of the relative motion and inertia parameters of an uncooperative target during a close-range monitoring trajectory. In the first phase, LIDAR-based pose measurements and a smoothing approach are used to retrieve accurate, linearly independent estimates of the target angular velocity. These estimates are then used to compute the target's moments of inertia ratios solving a linear system based on the conservation equation for the angular momentum. Once the inertia parameters are accurately estimated, the LIDAR-based pose measurements are used to feed an Unscented Kalman Filter to determine the full relative state according to a loosely coupled configuration. The architecture foresees autonomous failure detection strategies to avoid divergence in the relative state estimation error caused by unavoidable, unfavorable target observation conditions occurring during the monitoring trajectory. Performance assessment is carried out through numerical simulations realistically reproducing close-range relative motion dynamics and LIDAR sensor operation, and considering targets characterized by highly variable size, shape, and orbital dynamics as test cases. • An original LIDAR-based relative navigation architecture is proposed to deal with uncooperative spacecraft. • It exploits a multi-step strategy to estimate both the target inertia and the target-chaser relative state parameters. • Performance is assessed considering targets with different geometry, as well as orbital and rotational dynamics. • The diagonal elements of the inertia ratios matrix are estimated with a worst percentage error of about 6%. • The relative state estimation accuracy satisfies close-proximity requirements. This work presents a thermodynamic analysis of the integration of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with chemical looping combustion (CLC) in natural gas power plants. The fundamental idea of the proposed process integration is to use a dual fluidized-bed CLC process to complete the oxidation of the H 2 -CO-rich anode exhausts from the SOFC in the CLC fuel reactor while preheating the air stream to the cathode inlet temperature in the CLC air reactor. Thus, fuel oxidation can be completed in N 2 -free environment without the high energy and economic costs associated to O 2 production, avoiding at the same time the high temperature and high cost heat exchanger needed in conventional SOFC plants for air preheating. In the proposed configurations, the CLC plant is operated at mild conditions (atmospheric pressure and temperature in the range of 700–800 °C), already demonstrated in several pilot plants. Two different scenarios have been investigated: in the first one, the SOFC is designed for large-scale power generation (100 MW LHV of heat input), featuring a heat recovery steam cycle and CO 2 capture for subsequent storage. In the second scenario, the system is designed for a small-scale plant, producing 145 kg/h of pure CO 2 for industrial utilization, as a possible early market application. The main parameters affecting the plant performance, i.e. SOFC voltage (V) and S/C ratio at SOFC inlet, have been varied in a sensitivity analysis. Three different materials (Ni, Fe and Cu-based) are also compared as oxygen carriers (OCs) in the CLC unit. The integrated plant shows very high electric efficiency, exceeding 66% LHV at both small and large scale with a carbon capture ratio (CCR) of nearly 100%. It was found that, except for the cell voltage, the other operating parameters do not affect significantly the efficiency of the plant. Compared to the benchmark SOFC-based hybrid cycles using conventional CO 2 capture technologies, the SOFC-CLC power plant showed an electric efficiency ∼2 percentage points higher, without requiring high temperature heat exchangers and with a simplified process configuration. In recent years many activities were conducted to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the First World War (WWI) outbreak. Among these, the valorisation of history and landscape (VAST) project ( http://vast.fbk.eu ) was part of the initiatives promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento (Italy) as a tribute to WWI events in the region. The project was primarily aimed to document and promote, through 3D digitization approaches, ICT technologies and communication material, the memory of sites, theatre of the world conflict. The Trento's area was under the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of WWI and on the border with the Italian Kingdom. The area represented a crucial and bloody war front between the Austrian and Italian territories. It was thus constellated of military fortresses, trenches and tunnels, most of them now ruined and at risk to slowly disappear. 3D surveying and modelling techniques were exploited to produce 3D digital models of structures and objects, along with virtual tours, dissemination material and a WebGIS of the area. Summary Background & aim Fermented foods have been proposed for the prevention of infectious diseases. We evaluated the efficacy of fermented foods in reducing common infectious diseases (CIDs) in children attending daycare. Methods Prospective randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (registered under Clinical Trials.gov identifier NCT01909128 ) on healthy children (aged 12–48 months) consuming daily cow's milk (group A) or rice (group B) fermented with Lactobacillus paracasei CBA L74, or placebo (group C) for three months during the winter season. The main study outcome was the proportion of children who experienced at least one CID. All CIDs were diagnosed by family pediatricians. Fecal concentrations of innate (α- and β-defensins and cathelicidin LL-37) and acquired immunity biomarkers (secretory IgA) were also evaluated. Results 377 children (193 males, 51%) with a mean (SD) age of 32 (10) months completed the study: 137 in group A, 118 in group B and 122 in group C. Intention-to-treat analysis showed that the proportion of children who experienced at least one CID was lower in group A (51.8%) and B (65.9%) compared to group C (80.3%). Per-protocol analysis showed that the proportion of children presenting upper respiratory tract infections was lower in group A (48.2%) and group B (58.5%) compared with group C (70.5%). The proportion of children presenting acute gastroenteritis was also lower in group A (13.1%) and group B (19.5%) compared with group C (31.1%). A net increase of all fecal biomarkers of innate and acquired immunity was observed for groups A and B compared to group C. Moreover, there was a negative association between fecal biomarkers and the occurrence of CID. Conclusion Dietary supplementation with cow's milk or rice fermented with L. paracasei CBA L74 prevents CIDs in children attending daycare possibly by means of a stimulation of innate and acquired immunity. This paper presents an innovative multi-sensor relative navigation module conceived to enable close-proximity operations for on-orbit servicing of small satellites. The module is composed of a Near-Infrared Laser Range Finder, acting both as range measurer and illuminator, and a monocular camera able to detect a set of reflecting fiducial markers installed on the target for pose estimation. Sensor fusion is performed in several points of the proposed processing pipeline, first following a cross-cueing logic in which the range aids the pose determination process, and later through the integration of both measurements into a Multiplicative Extended Kalman Filter for relative state estimation. The entire relative navigation architecture is first tested by numerically reproducing a close-range rendezvous trajectory of a chaser spacecraft moving toward the target, and using the open-source software Blender for synthetic image generation. Simulations are aimed at determining nominal relative state estimation accuracy (also considering variable sensors' acquisition rates) as well as performance under non-nominal conditions (e.g., due to a temporary loss of measurements). Focusing on the image processing and pose estimation pipeline, an in-depth analysis of the computational efficiency is then carried out by running the proposed algorithms on an embedded processing unit (i.e., the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B) using both synthetic data and real images collected within a dedicated experimental testbed. Numerical and experimental results demonstrate capability to attain pose and relative state estimates in line with accuracy requirements to ensure autonomous and safe close-proximity operations, e.g., up to sub-cm and sub-degree error levels in relative position and attitude respectively. In addition, the algorithm's computational runtime has shown to be compatible with real-time implementation at an acquisition frequency of 2 Hz. • An original architecture for spacecraft relative navigation in close proximity is proposed. • It relies on optical measurements from a monocular camera and a laser range finder. • Circular retroreflective markers are mounted on the target satellite. • Numerical and experimental tests show sub-cm and sub-degree error levels in pose estimation. • Computational efficiency suitable for real time implementation on embedded hardware is proven. Aspirin monotherapy represents a standard therapy for preserving patency after coronary artery bypass grafting. Randomized trials addressing whether dual antiplatelet therapy is superior to single antiplatelet therapy to achieve graft patency early after coronary surgery have shown inconsistent results. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing single versus dual antiplatelet therapy after coronary artery bypass grafting. In a systematic published works search, 5 randomized controlled trials meeting inclusion criteria were identified. Pooled efficacy and safety data were abstracted and analyzed using a fixed-effects model. The 5 trials included 958 patients and a total of 2,919 grafts with treatment up to 1 year after coronary bypass surgery. Early occlusion was identified in 165 (6.5%) of 2,526 bypass grafts. Early occlusion occurred in a greater proportion of grafts among patients treated with single therapy (105 of 1,369; 7.7%) compared with dual antiplatelet therapy (69 of 1,386; 5.0%; p = 0.005). The odds ratio for graft occlusion with single versus dual therapy was 1.59 (95% confidence interval 1.16 to 2.17). For vein grafts, single antiplatelet therapy was associated with a significantly increased graft loss rate (91 of 846; 10.8%) versus dual antiplatelet therapy (57 of 860; 6.6%; odds ratio 1.70 [1.20 to 2.40]; p = 0.003). There was no effect on arterial graft patency. Bleeding was noted in 3.3% and 4.9% of single and dual therapy treated patients, respectively, with only 3 trials reporting bleeding outcomes. In conclusion, among 958 patients randomly assigned to either single or dual antiplatelet therapy for up to 1 year after coronary bypass surgery, single antiplatelet therapy significantly increased the risk for graft occlusion, an effect isolated to vein grafts, not arterial grafts. Objectives: To compare the impact of different formulas on the occurrence of other atopic manifestations and the time of immune tolerance acquisition.Study Design: In a 36-month prospective cohort study, the occurrence of other atopic manifestations (eczema, urticaria, asthma, and rhinoconjunctivitis) and the time of immune tolerance acquisition were comparatively evaluated in immunoglobulin E-mediated children with cow's milk allergy (CMA) treated with extensively hydrolyzed casein formula containing the probiotic L. rhamnosus GG (EHCF + LGG), rice hydrolyzed formula, soy formula, extensively hydrolyzed whey formula (EHWF), or amino acid-based formula.Results: In total, 365 subjects were enrolled into the study, 73 per formula cohort. The incidence of atopic manifestations was 0.22 (Bonferroni-corrected 95% CI 0.09-0.34) in the EHCF + LGG cohort; 0.52 (0.37-0.67) in the rice hydrolyzed formula cohort; 0.58 (0.43-0.72) in the soy formula cohort; 0.51 (0.36-0.66) in the EHWF cohort; and 0.77 (0.64-0.89) in the amino acid-based formula cohort. The incidence of atopic manifestations in the rice hydrolyzed formula, soy formula, EHWF, and amino acid-based formula cohorts vs the EHCF + LGG cohort was always greater than the prespecified absolute difference of 0.25 at an alpha-level of 0.0125, with corresponding risk ratios of 2.37 (1.46-3.86, P < .001) for rice hydrolyzed formula vs EHCF + LGG; 2.62 (1.63-4.22, P < .001) for soy formula vs EHCF + LGG; 2.31 (1.42-3.77, P < .001) for EHWF vs EHCF + LGG; and 3.50 (2.23-5.49, P < .001) for amino acid-based formula vs EHCF + LGG. The 36-month immune tolerance acquisition rate was greater in the EHCF + LGG cohort.Conclusions: The use of EHCF + LGG for CMA treatment is associated with lower incidence of atopic manifestations and greater rate of immune tolerance acquisition. Background and Objectives: Proper breakthrough cancer pain (BTcP) management is of pivotal importance. Although rapid-acting, oral and nasal transmucosal, fentanyl formulations (rapid-onset opioids, ROOs) are licensed for BTcP treatment, not all guidelines recommend their use. Presumably, some research gaps need to be bridged to produce solid evidence. We present a bibliometric network analysis on ROOs for BTcP treatment.Methods: Documents were retrieved from the Web of Science (WOS) online database. The string was "rapid onset opioids" or "transmucosal fentanyl" and "breakthrough cancer pain". Year of publication, journal metrics (impact factor and quartile), title, document type, topic, and clinical setting (in-patients, outpatients, and palliative care) were extracted. The software tool VOSviewer (version 1.6.17) was used to analyze the semantic network analyzes, bibliographic coupling, journals analysis, and research networks.Results: 502 articles were found in WOS. A declining trend in published articles from 2014 to 2021 was observed. Approximately 50% of documents regard top quartile (Q1) journals. Most articles focused on ROOs efficacy, but abuse and misuse issues are poorly addressed. With respect to article type, we calculated 132 clinical investigations. The semantic network analysis found interconnections between the terms "breakthrough cancer pain," "opioids," and "cancers." The top co-cited article was published in 2000 and addressed pain assessment. The largest number of partnerships regarded the United States, Italy, and England.Conclusion: In this research area, most articles are published in top-ranked journals. Objective: To investigate whether the addition of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) to the extensively hydrolyzed casein formula (EHCF) for cow's milk allergy (CMA) treatment could reduce the occurrence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs).Study Design: This cohort study included children with a positive history for CMA in the first year of life who were treated with EHCF alone or in combination with LGG and had evidence of immune tolerance acquisition to cow's milk for at least 12 months. FGID was diagnosed according to the Rome III diagnostic criteria by investigators unaware of previous treatment. A cohort of consecutive healthy children was also evaluated as a control population.Results: A total of 330 subjects were included, 110 per cohort (EHCF, EHCF+LGG, and healthy controls). The rate of subjects with ≥1 FGID was significantly lower in the EHCF+LGG cohort compared with the EHCF cohort (40% vs 16.4%; P < .05). In the EHCF+LGG cohort, a lower incidence was observed for all components of the main study outcome. The prevalence of FGIDs in the healthy cohort was lower than that in the EHCF cohort and similar to that in the EHCF+LGG cohort. The incidence rate ratio of FGIDs for the EHCF+LGG cohort vs the EHCF cohort (0.40; 95% CI, 0.25-0.65; P < .001) was unmodified after correction for age at CMA diagnosis, breastfeeding, weaning time, and presence of a first-degree relative with an FGID.Conclusions: These results confirm the increased risk for developing FGIDs in children with CMA and suggest that EHCF+LGG could reduce this risk. Background Anatomic awareness of the structural connectivity of the brain is mandatory for neurosurgeons, to select the most effective approaches for brain resections. Although standard microdissection is a validated technique to investigate the different white matter (WM) pathways and to verify the results of tractography, the possibility of interactive exploration of the specimens and reliable acquisition of quantitative information has not been described. Photogrammetry is a well-established technique allowing an accurate metrology on highly defined three-dimensional (3D) models. The aim of this work is to propose the application of the photogrammetric technique for supporting the 3D exploration and the quantitative analysis on the cerebral WM connectivity. Methods The main perisylvian pathways, including the superior longitudinal fascicle and the arcuate fascicle were exposed using the Klingler technique. The photogrammetric acquisition followed each dissection step. The point clouds were registered to a reference magnetic resonance image of the specimen. All the acquisitions were coregistered into an open-source model. Results We analyzed 5 steps, including the cortical surface, the short intergyral fibers, the indirect posterior and anterior superior longitudinal fascicle, and the arcuate fascicle. The coregistration between the magnetic resonance imaging mesh and the point clouds models was highly accurate. Multiple measures of distances between specific cortical landmarks and WM tracts were collected on the photogrammetric model. Conclusions Photogrammetry allows an accurate 3D reproduction of WM anatomy and the acquisition of unlimited quantitative data directly on the real specimen during the postdissection analysis. Background Children with cow's milk allergy (CMA) have an increased risk of other allergic manifestations (AMs). Objective We performed a parallel-arm randomized controlled trial to test whether administration of an extensively hydrolyzed casein formula (EHCF) containing the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) can reduce the occurrence of other AMs in children with CMA. Methods Children with IgE-mediated CMA were randomly allocated to the EHCF or EHCF+LGG groups and followed for 36 months. The main outcome was occurrence of at least 1 AM (eczema, urticaria, asthma, and rhinoconjunctivitis). The secondary outcome was tolerance acquisition, which was defined as the negativization of a double-blind food challenge results at 12, 24, and 36 months. AMs were diagnosed according to standardized criteria. Tolerance acquisition was evaluated every 12 months. Results A total of 220 children (147 boys [67%]) with a median age of 5.0 months (interquartile range, 3.0-8.0 months) were randomized; 110 children were placed in the EHCF group, and 110 children were placed in the EHCF+LGG group. In the complete case analysis the absolute risk difference for the occurrence of at least 1 AM over 36 months was −0.23 (95% CI, −0.36 to −0.10; P < .001), and the absolute risk difference for the acquisition of cow's milk tolerance was 0.20 (95% CI, 0.05-0.35; P < .01) at 12 months, 0.24 (95% CI, 0.08-0.41; P < .01) at 24 months, and 0.27 (95% CI, 0.11-0.43; P < .001) at 36 months. In the sensitivity analysis the effect size of the main outcome was virtually unchanged when the occurrence of AMs was assigned to all 27 missing children. Conclusions EHCF+LGG reduces the incidence of other AMs and hastens the development of oral tolerance in children with IgE-mediated CMA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
