Abstract

The Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE) was a global environmental change and biotic crisis that occurred during the Carnian (Late Triassic). The climate during the CPE was characterized by a short-lived period of extreme rainfall, and an extinction of marine taxa is known to have occurred during the latest Julian (i.e. early Carnian). Although these events are considered to have been caused by the Wrangellia Flood Basalt (FB) volcanism, existing studies have found little direct evidence to support this. We investigated the temporal relationship between the eruption of Wrangellia FB and CPE using high-resolution microfossil biostratigraphy and paleo-seawater Os isotope data of an Upper Triassic bedded chert succession from an accretionary complex in Japan, which accumulated in a pelagic deep-sea environment in an equatorial region of the Panthalassa Ocean. Our biostratigraphic analysis, based on conodonts and radiolarians, and osmium isotope data show: (i) a continuous decline of initial Os isotope ratios (187Os/188Osi) in the early Julian; (ii) low 187Os/188Osi ratios during the late Julian; and (iii) an abrupt increase in 187Os/188Osi ratios at the end of the Julian. The decrease in 187Os/188Osi ratios throughout the Julian suggests an increased input of unradiogenic Os from the eruption of the Wrangellia FB into the ocean. Moreover, redox-sensitive elements, such as V and U, increased abruptly at the end of the Julian, which is the first evidence of reducing conditions during the CPE within the pelagic deep-sea Panthalassa Ocean. Marine anoxic event in the late Julian has been recognized from widespread deposition of black shales and organic-rich marls in intermediate to shallow water Tethyan sections. Thus, oxygen-depleted conditions occurred at the Tethyan shallow continental margin, as well as in the pelagic deep-sea Panthalassa Ocean, at the end of Wrangellia FB volcanism.

Abstract

Abstract: Dense hafnium nitride (HfN) layers were prepared between Pd protection films and a Ta substrate in a composite hydrogen separation membrane to prevent a reaction between the Pd and the substrate at high temperatures. No significant reduction in hydrogen permeation rate was observed for the membrane with 50-nm-thick HfN layers at 873 K through at least 35 h, whereas the specimen without HfN layers rapidly deteriorated within 5 h. Hydrogen permeability of the former specimen was 4 × 10−9 mol m−1 s−1 Pa−0.5 at 873 K at steady state. This value was smaller than the initial permeability of Pd-covered Ta before deterioration by an order of magnitude. The measurements of pressure–composition isotherms by using a HfN powder specimen showed that the hydrogen solubility in HfN was sufficiently high and comparable with the solubility in Ta. Therefore, the low permeability observed with the HfN intermediate layers was ascribed to low hydrogen diffusivity in HfN. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: This paper is focused on the effect of limestone and calcium sulfate content on sulfate resistance of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) blended cement. Sulfate resistance was evaluated using ASTM C 1012, and a variety of mechanisms of the sulfate resistance of GGBS blended cement were revealed by the analyses of hydration products and sulfate ion ingress. Although GGBS suppresses sulfate ion ingress, it is probable that alumina in GGBS tends to form ettringite with externally supplied sulfate ions. Addition of limestone and increase in calcium sulfate content allow both monocarboaluminate and ettringite to form prior to immersion in sulfate solution. These hydration products remain in the hardened cement matrix and act to suppress further formation of ettringite with external sulfate ions during immersion in sulfate solution. GGBS blended cement with a suitable amount of limestone powder and a controlled content of calcium sulfate exhibits markedly long term sulfate resistance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

We report measurements of the charmless semileptonic decays B0→π−/ρ−ℓ+ν and B+→π0/ρ0ℓ+ν, based on a sample of 2.75×108 BB¯ events collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e− asymmetric collider. In this analysis, the accompanying B meson is reconstructed in the semileptonic mode B→D(∗)ℓν, enabling detection of the signal modes with high purity. We measure the branching fractions B(B0→π−ℓ+ν)=(1.38±0.19±0.14±0.03)×10−4, B(B0→ρ−ℓ+ν)=(2.17±0.54±0.31±0.08)×10−4, B(B+→π0ℓ+ν)=(0.77±0.14±0.08±0.00)×10−4 and B(B+→ρ0ℓ+ν)=(1.33±0.23±0.17±0.05)×10−4, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and systematic due to form factor uncertainties, respectively. Abstract

We report measurements of partial branching fractions of inclusive charmless semileptonic B-meson decays at the endpoint of the electron momentum spectrum. The measurements are made in six overlapping momentum intervals that have lower bounds ranging from 1.9 to 2.4 GeV/c and a common upper bound of 2.6 GeV/c, as measured in the centre of mass frame. The results are based on a sample of 29 million BB¯ pairs, accumulated by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e− collider operating on the ϒ(4S) resonance. In the momentum interval ranging from 1.9 to 2.6 GeV/c we measure the partial branching fraction ΔB(B→Xueνe)=(8.47±0.37±1.53)×10−4, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. A prediction of the partial rate R=(21.69±3.62−1.98+2.18)|Vub|2 ps−1 in this momentum interval based on theory is calculated with input HQET parameters that have been derived from Belle's measurement of the B→Xsγ photon energy spectrum, where the first error is due to the uncertainty on HQET parameters and the second error is from theory. Using both ΔB(B→Xueνe) and R we find |Vub|=(5.08±0.47±0.42−0.23+0.26)×10−3, where the first error is from the partial branching fraction, and the second and third errors are from uncertainties in R.

Abstract

We report measurements of time-dependent decay rates for B0→D∗∓π± decays and extraction of CP violation parameters related to ϕ3. We use a partial reconstruction technique, whereby signal events are identified using information only from the primary pion and the charged pion from the decay of the D∗∓. The analysis uses 140 fb−1 of data accumulated at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. We measure the CP violation parameters S+=0.035±0.041(stat)±0.018(syst) and S−=0.025±0.041(stat)±0.018(syst).

Abstract

Abstract: Introduction: There are few recent studies investigating increased risks for adverse effects leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) among kidney donors. The aim of this study was to identify factors that protect renal function among actual live kidney donors. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 68 individuals who had undergone donor nephrectomy in this study. We assessed donor age, body mass index (BMI), casual blood pressure, preoperative and 3-month follow-up serum creatinines, serum total cholesterol, and several other clinical parameters. The severity of arteriosclerosis in the arteriolar and interlobular arteries of the donor kidney was semiquantitatively evaluated in 4 grades using back table biopsies. Impairment of renal function after surgery was expressed by differences in serum creatinine levels. Results: The ratio of glomerular sclerosis, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure positively correlated with donor age. Deterioration of renal function after donor nephrectomy negatively correlated with BMI and positively correlated with severity of arteriosclerosis in interlobular arteries. A multiple regression analysis model with respect to the severity of arteriosclerosis in interlobular arteries showed significant influence, of serum creatinine and systolic blood pressure. Conclusions: Preventing progression of arteriosclerosis and selecting the optimal BMI before donor nephrectomy will help to avoid impaired renal function among live kidney donors. Abstract

Aim: To investigate the usefulness of high-resolution 3 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the evaluation of traumatic and degenerative triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) abnormalities among three groups: patients presenting with wrist pain who were (a) younger than age 50 years or (b) age 50 or older (PT<50 and PT≥50, respectively), and (c) asymptomatic controls who were younger than age 50 years (AC).Materials and Methods: High-resolution 3 T MRI was evaluated retrospectively in 96 patients, including 47 PT<50, 38 PT≥50, and 11 AC. Two board-certified radiologists reviewed the MRI images independently. MRI features of TFCC injury were analysed according to the Palmer classification, and cartilage degeneration around the TFCC was evaluated using the Outerbridge classification. Differences in MRI findings among these groups were detected using chi-square test. Cohen's kappa was calculated to assess interobserver and intra-observer reliability.Results: The incidence of Palmer class 1A, 1C and 1D traumatic TFCC injury was significantly (p<0.05) higher in PT≥50 than in PT<50 (class 1A: 47.4% versus 27.7%, class 1C: 31.6% versus 12.8%, and class 1D: 21.1% versus 2.1%). Likewise, MRI findings of TFCC degeneration were observed more frequently in PT≥50 than in PT<50 (p<0.01). Outerbridge grade 2 or higher cartilage degeneration was significantly (p<0.01) more frequently seen in PT≥50 than in PT<50 (55.3% versus 17% in the lunate, 28.9% versus 4.3% in the triquetrum, 73.7% versus 12.8% in the ulna).Conclusion: High-resolution wrist MRI at 3 T enables detailed evaluation of TFCC traumatic injury and degenerative changes using the Palmer and Outerbridge classifications, with good or excellent interobserver and intra-observer reliability. Abstract

Abstract: The spin-dependent quantum well effect on tunneling conductance was investigated in fully epitaxial Cr/ultrathin Fe/MgO/Fe junctions at room temperature. We found that the quantum well states (QWS) are strongly affected by the growth condition of the ultrathin Fe layer. Large enhancement of the conductance peak height was observed for the sample with post-annealing temperature 200 °C compared with the case of no annealing. The conductance at around zero bias exhibits clear oscillatory behavior depending on the ultrathin Fe thickness. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
