36. Non-metal doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4): Prospects and review on hydrogen generation via water splitting.

Abstract

Green and clean energy is what the world needs. A green chemical fuel which is extremely energetic, affordable, practical, and effective, is hydrogen that can simultaneously address the world's energy crisis and environmental issues. Water can be converted into hydrogen using photocatalytic materials under sunlight. Generation of suitable and sustainable photocatalytic materials might be a practical solution of above issues. Since g-C 3 N 4 is a visible light-responsive, metal-free, and inexpensive semiconductor, it has a lot of potential as a photocatalytic material. Nevertheless, the photocatalyst g-C 3 N 4 has reached to it's saturation point due to its inherent disadvantages. To get around these problems, g-C 3 N 4 's lattice, morphology, surface, or interface can be improved in several ways. Doping is a technique for modifying the g-C 3 N 4 lattice. Doping with metal, nonmetal, or both can alter the structure of the g-C 3 N 4 lattice but nonmetal is the cost-effective and efficient method for water splitting. The mechanism, type and quantity of dopant source, reaction parameters, and synthesis process involved for g-C 3 N 4 are all covered in this review. The advancements made to g-C 3 N 4 based photocatalysts that are co-doped (binary or multiple) non-metal or metal/non-metal-doped, or both, or functional group modification as well as morphological changes were highlighted. These modifications enhanced the activity of hydrogen production by water cleavage. Additionally, the development of highly efficient doped g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic systems for water splitting is discussed, along with opportunities for future advancement and current challenges. 37. Metal free S-scheme heterojunction S-doped g-C3N4/g-C3N4 for enhanced photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract

Using different precursors (urea, thiourea, and urea-thiourea), the S(step)-scheme hetero system i. e. 2D/2D S-doped g-C 3 N 4 /g-C 3 N 4 was synthesised by in-situ calcination. Samples that had been prepared were evaluated for water splitting to produce hydrogen in aqueous CH 3 OH scavenger under exposure of a 300W Xe light. The system consisting of urea and thiourea (1:1 CN-T + U) has exhibited the highest rate of hydrogen production i. e. 485.51 μmolg−1h−1 with 1.75% apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) at 420 nm light irradiation, which is 1.37 and 1.29 times higher than the CN–U and CN-T systems. The S-type heterojunction formed between S-doped g-C 3 N 4 and g-C 3 N 4 , is responsible for the higher rate of hydrogen evolution because the heterojunction is more efficient than the typical type-II heterojunction for spatial charge separation and redox ability of the system's oxidation and reduction sites. The photocatalytic electron transfer mechanism based on advanced analysis techniques (XRD, UV–Vis, SEM, EDX, PLE, ESR, XPS, SPV, etc.) was also suggested for the investigated system.
