Abstract: Differential cross-section measurements of the 19F(d,p0–1)20F and 19F(d,α0–3)17O reactions have been performed in the projectile energy region Ed,lab =1800–3000keV in steps of 25keV and for detection angles 150° and 170° using thin LiF and CaF2 targets. To validate the obtained results, benchmarking measurements were performed, using a CaF2 pellet and a thick, mirror-polished BaF2 target at various beam energies. The results are also compared to data from literature, when available, and all the observed discrepancies are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Differential cross sections of the 7Li(p,p0)7Li, 7Li(p,p1)7Li, 7Li(p,α 0)4He, 19F(p,p0)19F, 19F(p,α0)16O and 19F(p,α1,2)16O reactions have been determined for proton energies E lab =1500–7000keV, using a variable energy step and for detection angles between 140° and 170° in steps of 10°. To validate the obtained results, benchmarking measurements were performed, using thick and mirror-polished BaF2 and LiF targets. The experimental data are compared to data from the literature, when available, and similarities and discrepancies are presented and analyzed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Physical vapor deposited (PVD) WB 2 thin films crystallize in the α-AlB 2 -prototype structure rather than in their thermodynamically stable ω-W 2 B 5-z -prototype structure. Contrary to the majority of α-AlB 2 -type transition metal diborides (TMB 2 ), α-WB 2 exhibits a more ductile character. Combining density functional theory and sophisticated experiments, we show that the stability of α-WB 2 thin films is basically influenced by point defects such as vacancies present in PVD materials. With the help of α-TaB 2 (one of the most ductile TMB 2 with high preference for α-AlB 2 -type), the thermally driven decomposition and phase transformation of α-W 1-x Ta x B 2-z to the ω-W 2 B 5-z -type can be shifted to temperatures above 1200 °C. Abstract: Boron depth profiling presents strong analytical challenges for all Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques. In the past, both the 11B(p,α o)8Be (NRA) and the 11B(p,p 0)11B (EBS) reactions have been proposed and they seem to be quite suitable for analytical purposes. Nonetheless, both reactions have not been adequately studied in literature (as far as data suitable for material analysis in the backscattering geometry are concerned). Moreover, the existing datasets are relatively discrepant. In an attempt to clarify the situation, both reactions were studied in the present work between 135° and 160°, in steps of 5°, for the proton beam energy range between 2.2 and 4.2MeV, in steps of 50keV. An attempt to explain the occurring results in the framework of the resonance mechanism is also presented, along with a comparison with previously published data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The phase evolution of Al 1−x Cr x -based intermetallic coatings and corresponding substoichiometric oxides grown by cathodic arc evaporation was investigated in order to obtain a better understanding of the relation between oxygen flow rate, Al and Cr content, and structural evolution of the coatings deposited. When using 20 sccm Ar, or 50 sccm O 2 , or 100 sccm O 2 per active source (p.a.s.) the cathode reaction zone consists of various intermetallic Al-Cr-compounds, which are in good agreement with the binary Al-Cr phase diagram. This is generally also reflected in the phase composition of the metallic and substoichiometric oxide coatings. The Al-rich compositions, Al 0.75 Cr 0.25 and Al 0.70 Cr 0.30 , show a strong tendency for the formation of γ 1 -Al 8 Cr 5 phases. Mostly, the coating compositions of the metallic constituents of the synthesised intermetallic and substoichiometric oxide coatings deviate from the elemental compositions of the cathode, show enrichment in Cr. This deviation is more pronounced for Cr-rich cathodes using low O 2 flow rates during deposition. The dense columnar structure of the intermetallic coatings (hardness values between 2.5 and 10.2 GPa) turns into a nano-composite-like morphology for depositions with 50 and 100 sccm O 2 p.a.s., which in turn leads to a significant hardness increase up to ~24 GPa. Among all coatings investigated, the Cr-rich compositions have higher hardness and denser morphology than the Al-rich layers. Using nonreactive sputter deposition allows the preparation of single-phase fcc structured TaC y thin films over a wide compositional range with y between 0.63 and 1.04. Among this composition range, the C-deficient TaC 0.78 exhibits the highest as deposited hardness of 43.4 ± 0.65 GPa combined with the highest thermal stability. Even after vacuum annealing to 2400 °C, no vacancy-ordered or faulted Ta-C based phases can be detected. The stabilization of carbon deficient fcc structured TaC y near y of about 0.75, revealed the decisive character of vacancy engineered thin films materials for ultra-high temperature applications. Abstract: Carbon depth profiling presents a strong analytical challenge for all the major ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques, with elastic backscattering spectroscopy (EBS) being widely implemented. In the past, the 12C(p,p)12C reaction has been successfully evaluated for proton beam energies up to 4.5MeV. Currently, an attempt is being made to extend this evaluation to higher energies, namely up to E p,lab =7MeV. There is a certain lack of available and/or coherent datasets in literature for these relatively high proton beam energies at backward angles, suitable for IBA. Moreover, the few existing datasets are in certain cases discrepant. Thus, in the present work, the differential cross-section of proton elastic scattering on carbon were measured between 140°and 170°, in steps of 10°, for the proton beam energy range between 2.7 and 7MeV. The experimental results obtained, along with data from literature, were evaluated applying nuclear physics models. The evaluated results were benchmarked using a thick, mirror polished glassy carbon target at different beam energies and detector angles. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
