Spending time outdoors may bolster mental health via relaxation and physical activity. Yet, most studies use self-report and involve majority White samples from higher income areas. Findings may not hold true using device-derived measurement, among minoritized participants, or in low-income neighborhoods. Our objectives were to test whether: i) time spent outdoors in physical activity is associated with mental health; ii) the effect is modified by the positive or negative outdoor conditions (amount of greenness or vacant houses/lots encountered while outdoors); iii) there is a correlation between our measures of outdoor conditions and perceived neighborhood conditions; and iv) there is a different relationship between time spent outdoors in parks (as an indicator of intentional nature exposure) and mental health. The sample of 112 participants (87 % Black/African American persons) from 11 Detroit, MI neighborhoods wore a GPS and accelerometer for one week (May-Oct 2021) and completed a survey. We calculated exposure to greenness, vacant lots/houses while outdoors, and perceived neighborhood aesthetics. We fitted regression models for mental health measures separately and included time spent outdoors in PA, age, sex, and days with high precipitation. We then fitted models stratified by outdoor conditions. Last, we examined whether a similar relationship could be detected for time spent outdoors in parks. On average, ∼30 % of PA was conducted outdoors, and 56 % of outdoor time involved PA. We observed an unexpected positive association between outdoor PA and anxiety (coef: 0.33, 95 % CI: 0.14–0.51), depression (coef: 0.31, 95 % CI: 0.15–0.47), and perceived stress score (coef: 0.18, 95 % CI: 0.07–0.29). When stratified, we found consistent and/or larger associations for those exposed to high levels of vacant homes, high greenness (both aerial and street-level), low levels of vacant lots, and low perceived neighborhood aesthetics. Importantly and in contrast, we observed the opposite trend when examining time spent in parks (coef: −0.05, 95 % CI: −0.10--0.01). These results contrast many studies showing positive relationships between time outdoors and mental health and highlight the need for research with diverse populations and better measures of outdoor conditions and intentionality of greenspace contact. • We explored relationships between outdoor PA and mental health, and modification by outdoor conditions. • We found a positive association between outdoor PA and three measures of mental health. • We found consistent associations for those exposed to more vacant homes and greenery, fewer vacant lots, and low aesthetics. • In contrast, we observed the opposite trend when examining time spent in parks. • Research is needed in diverse populations, on better metrics of greenspace quality and on intentional greenspace contact. To study the demographics of Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) using a large international database of people affected by LHON. Cross-sectional study. One thousand five hundred seventeen people affected by LHON with a known pathogenic genetic mutation. Self-reported genetic and demographic data were collected. The data were de-identified and then analyzed. Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy mutation, gender, age at vision loss onset, and geographical region. The data showed that both females and males can experience symptom onset at any age. We found a 3:1 male-to-female ratio. Interestingly, at younger than 5 years and older than 45 years, the male-to-female ratio of those becoming affected was approximately 1:1. A dramatic peak in age at onset of vision loss was found among males between 14 and 26 years of age. Disease onset in females occurred across all age groups, without any comparable dramatic peak of onset age. This study found that 10% of individuals become affected with LHON after 50 years of age. According to the literature, we found that the m.11778, m.14484, and m.3460 mutations were the most common LHON point mutations in both males and females, with a similar age at onset distribution. This was the largest study of LHON demographics to date. It showed that women carrying an LHON mutation are at higher risk of losing vision than is generally expected. Unlike the traditional 5:1 male-to-female ratio commonly reported in the literature, we found a 3:1 male-to-female ratio. Earlier studies may have harbored an ascertainment bias of overemphasizing the confirmation of this being a disease of young men. However, our data suggest that LHON is a disease that affects both females and males of all ages. This should prompt physicians to conduct genetic testing for LHON in all patients who meet the clinical criteria, regardless of whether they fit the demographics traditionally associated with the disease. Counseling about LHON should be offered to all maternal bloodline relatives, females and males of all ages, because they are at risk of sudden-onset legal blindness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• There was no immediate change in lifetime or past 30-day marijuana use among middle school-aged adolescents in Nevada compared to New Mexico. • Regardless of state, marijuana use increased among females, students of color, and those attending Title I schools. This study investigated whether adult use marijuana sales were associated with changes in lifetime and past 30-day (P30D) marijuana use among middle school students in Nevada (NV), which had adult-use marijuana sales during the study period, compared to New Mexico (NM), which did not have adult-use marijuana sales during the study period. Data were drawn from the middle school 2017 and 2019 NV Youth Risk Behavior and NM Youth Risk and Resiliency Surveys. Difference-in-difference analyses compare changes in lifetime and P30D marijuana use in NV (adult-use sales implemented July 2017) vs. NM (no adult-use sales during the study period). There was no difference in lifetime (aOR 1.11; 95% CI 0.91,1.36) and P30D (aOR 1.17; 95% CI 0.91,1.51) marijuana use by adult-use sales status. The odds of lifetime and P30D marijuana use increased in both states, particularly among students who were female, older, non-White, or attending a Title 1 school. Adult-use sales were not associated with an increase in lifetime or P30D marijuana use. State-level prevention efforts should focus on sub-populations with increasing lifetime and P30D use regardless of adult-use sales status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The heterogeneity of e-cigarette products and e-liquids pose challenges to surveillance of e-cigarette exposure. The goal of this study was to evaluate the internal consistency of e-cigarette use frequency, quantity, and duration measures in a national population-based survey.Methods: Data were drawn from the 2012-2013 for the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (n = 36,309; NESARC-III). Adults who used e-cigarettes/e-liquid during the past year (≤18 years old; n = 1,229) were asked about their age of first use, recency of use, quantity (i.e., cartridges, drops), nicotine concentration, and duration (hours). Several internal consistency parameters were compared for e-cigarette measures in past-year (n = 750) and past 30-day e-cigarette users (n = 472) overall, and by frequency of use (i.e., infrequent [≤3 days/month], non-daily [1-6 days/week], daily).Results: There were no significant differences in quantity, nicotine concentration, or duration by frequency of use in past 30-day e-cigarette users. One-third of past 30-day and almost half of past-year users did not know the nicotine concentration of their cartridge or e-liquid. Correlations between all e-cigarette use measures were low, with the highest correlations seen between e-liquid quantity and cartridge quantity in all past 30-day users (r = 0.28) and those reporting any e-liquid use (r = 0.40). Cronbach's alpha and mean interitem correlations were low across all user groups.Conclusions: Low to moderate correlation across e-cigarette measures in e-cigarette users implies low internal consistency of these measures in a population survey. Findings suggest measures such as quantity and nicotine concentration might more appropriate in samples of recent experienced e-cigarette users than in general population samples. The E3 ubiquitin ligase parkin is a critical regulator of mitophagy and has been identified as a susceptibility gene for type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, its role in metabolically active tissues that precipitate T2D development is unknown. Specifically, pancreatic β cells and adipocytes both rely heavily on mitochondrial function in the regulation of optimal glycemic control to prevent T2D, but parkin's role in preserving quality control of β cell or adipocyte mitochondria is unclear. Although parkin has been reported previously to control mitophagy, here we show that, surprisingly, parkin is dispensable for glucose homeostasis in both β cells and adipocytes during diet-induced insulin resistance in mice. We observed that insulin secretion, β cell formation, and islet architecture were preserved in parkin-deficient β cells and islets, suggesting that parkin is not necessary for control of β cell function and islet compensation for diet-induced obesity. Although transient parkin deficiency mildly impaired mitochondrial turnover in β cell lines, parkin deletion in primary β cells yielded no deficits in mitochondrial clearance. In adipocyte- specific deletion models, lipid uptake and β-oxidation were increased in cultured cells, whereas adipose tissue morphology, glucose homeostasis, and beige-to-white adipocyte transition were unaffected in vivo. In key metabolic tissues where mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in T2D development, our experiments unexpectedly revealed that parkin is not an essential regulator of glucose tolerance, whole-body energy metabolism, or mitochondrial quality control. Background: Little is known about the influence of online peer interactions on health behavior change. This study examined the relationship between exposure to peer sentiment about nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in an online social network for smoking cessation and NRT use.Methods: Participants were 3297 current smokers who enrolled in an Internet smoking cessation program, participated in a randomized trial, and completed a 3-month follow-up. Half received free NRT as part of the trial. Automated text classification identified 27,038 posts about NRT that one or more participants were exposed to in the social network. Sentiment towards NRT was rated on Amazon Mechanical Turk. Participants' exposure to peer sentiment about NRT was determined by analysis of clickstream data. Modified Poisson regression examined self-reported use of NRT at 3-months as a function of exposure to NRT sentiment, controlling for study arm and post exposure.Results: One in five participants (19.3%, n = 639) were exposed to any NRT-related posts (mean exposure = 6.5 ± 14.7, mean sentiment = 5.4 ± 0.8). The association between sentiment exposure and NRT use varied by receipt of free NRT. Greater exposure to positive NRT sentiment was associated with an increased likelihood of NRT use among participants who did not receive free NRT (adjusted rate ratio 1.22, 95% CI 1.01, 1.47; p = .043), whereas no such relationship was observed among participants who did receive free NRT (p = .48).Conclusions: Exposure to positive sentiment about NRT was associated with increased NRT use when smokers obtained it on their own. Abstract To understand the impacts of dry and wet seasons and land use on water quality in a karst system, twenty-one deep municipal wells were sampled synoptically across the State of Yucatán. Surrounding land uses comprised urban, crop, and livestock as defined by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico. Measurements included pH, temperature, specific conductance, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl−, SO 4 2−, alkalinity, NO 3 −, and fecal coliforms. Data were reduced using various geochemical, statistical, and spatial analytical methods and compared to a similar study on cenotes (sinkhole). Results show that 1) groundwater is diluted during the rainy season, but not for all parameters; 2) the geochemical structure of the water is obscured during the wet season; 3) the change in values for most parameters differs from that in the cenotes, however for both, fecal coliforms are higher in the wet season; 4) the relationship of land use to water quantity is unclear, however some influence of agriculture and urban were observed, and 5) water quality is at risk in both dry (NO 3 −) and wet (fecal coliforms) seasons. It is hypothesized that these results may be explained by changes in dominant flow paths between dry (matrix, fracture flow) and wet (conduit flow) seasons. In addition, results suggest that rock-water interactions, hydrology, and land cover maybe more important in understanding the influence on water quality than land use. Clearly, understanding the impact of both land use and season on groundwater quality in any karst environment is challenging. Further work should include using different methods for defining land use need to be explored and a more diverse set of water quality measurements need to be made. Abstract Background and purpose A three module online self-paced educational resource was developed for entry to practice students transitioning from the classroom to their inpatient practicums. The objective of this study was to determine the benefits of the transition modules on students' self-perceived competency as related to onsite performance and reduction in anxiety during their inpatient practicum. Educational activity and setting Evaluations of the three transition modules were conducted in two phases via electronic surveys distributed to final year advanced pharmacy practice students and focus group members including faculty, pharmacy practice educators, and pharmacy residents. Findings Based on our findings, the modules addressed common learning needs. While 69.7% of student respondents from Phase II of the evaluation found the modules to have positively impacted their onsite performance, only 24.7% believed the modules reduced their anxiety. Discussion The study indicates that students found the modules to be relevant to inpatient practice and of appropriate difficulty. Although most students perceived the modules to enhance performance on practicum, student anxiety levels appeared to remain unchanged. Summary Based on feedback and results, it may be beneficial to expose students to transition modules earlier in the curriculum in tandem with other inpatient preparatory activities. We systematically reviewed the current use of Google Street View (GSV) in health research and characterized major themes, strengths and weaknesses in order to highlight possibilities for future research. Of 54 qualifying studies, we found that most used GSV to assess the neighborhood built environment, followed by health policy compliance, study site selection, and disaster preparedness. Most studies were conducted in urban areas of North America, Europe, or New Zealand, with few studies from South America or Asia and none from Africa or rural areas. Health behaviors and outcomes of interest in these studies included injury, alcohol and tobacco use, physical activity and mental health. Major strengths of using GSV imagery included low cost, ease of use, and time saved. Identified weaknesses were image resolution and spatial and temporal availability, largely in developing regions of the world. Despite important limitations, GSV is a promising tool for automated environmental assessment for health research. Currently untapped areas of health research using GSV include identification of sources of air, soil or water pollution, park design and usage, amenity design and longitudinal research on neighborhood conditions. Community geographic features change over time, and this change can be contentious. Understanding social responses to this change is important for policies related to adaptation to climate change. This paper examines the use of participatory mapping of resources, at two time points, in a Tanzanian community. The results of our mapping (May 2015) were compared to those by a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (2009). Differences included boundaries, land use designations and accessibility. These discrepancies may reflect actual changes in resources and livelihoods over time, but also differences in researcher trust and the enabling of participants. Findings suggest that repeated participatory maps, conducted in a trusting environment, are required for long-term planning in places experiencing both climate and social change. Summary Expansions of microsatellite repeats are responsible for numerous hereditary diseases in humans, including myotonic dystrophy and Friedreich’s ataxia. Whereas the length of an expandable repeat is the main factor determining disease inheritance, recent data point to genomic trans modifiers that can impact the likelihood of expansions and disease progression. Detection of these modifiers may lead to understanding and treating repeat expansion diseases. Here, we describe a method for the rapid, genome-wide identification of trans modifiers for repeat expansion in a yeast experimental system. Using this method, we found that missense mutations in the endoribonuclease subunit (Ysh1) of the mRNA cleavage and polyadenylation complex dramatically increase the rate of (GAA) n repeat expansions but only when they are actively transcribed. These expansions correlate with slower transcription elongation caused by the ysh1 mutation. These results reveal an interplay between RNA processing and repeat-mediated genome instability, confirming the validity of our approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review is a synopsis of an International Behavioral Neuroscience Society (IBNS) symposium which focused on the elements of Behavioral Neuroscience for which Robert J. Blanchard was a Pioneer, Leading Expert, Advocate, Mentor, and Sage. Bob Blanchard’s work demonstrably changed our broad understanding of animal behavior, and led the way to experimental design and analysis for studies of animal behavior that helped to clarify the deep complexity and subtleties of behavior. Bob’s impact on the field of Behavioral Neuroscience includes the behavior, neurocircuitry, neurochemistry, and pharmacology related to social interactions, aggressive behavior, defensive behaviors, flight, freezing, threat, attack, risk assessment, anxiety disorders, animal models, models of social behavior, and autism. The methods and designs developed by Bob Blanchard over a lifetime have been adopted by scientists around the world, and form a standard of excellence in the field. The article addresses these topics in a way that presents developments in the field, describes the newest research data, and pays tribute to a great scientist and founder of this field of work, Bob Blanchard. Māori (the indigenous peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand) experience of colonisation has negatively affected access to many of the resources (e.g. income, adequate housing) that enable health and well-being. However Māori have actively responded to the challenges they have faced. With the majority of the Māori population now living in urban settings this exploratory study aimed to understand factors contributing to mortality resilience despite exposure to socio-economic adversity with reference to Māori well-being. Resilient urban neighborhoods were defined as those that had lower than expected premature mortality among Māori residents despite high levels of socio-economic adversity. Selected resilience indicators theoretically linked to a Māori well-being framework were correlated with the novel Māori_RINZ resilience index. Of the selected indicators, only exposure to crime showed a clear gradient across the resilience index as predicted by the Māori well-being framework. Future research is needed as unclear trends for other indicators may reflect limitations in the indicators used or the need to develop a more comprehensive measure of well-being. As the health care environment continually changes, radiologists look to the ACR's Imaging 3.0® initiative to guide the search for value. By leveraging new technology, a cloud-based image exchange network could provide secure universal access to prior images, which were previously siloed, to facilitate accurate interpretation, improved outcomes, and reduced costs. The breast imaging department represents a viable starting point given the robust data supporting the benefit of access to prior imaging studies, existing infrastructure for image sharing, and the current workflow reliance on prior images.
