The 2022 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Study Group (FASDSG) meeting was held in coordination with the 45th annual Research Society on Alcoholism conference on June 25th, 2022. The theme of the meeting was "Enhancing the Relevance of Research for the Community." The program began with a moderated panel discussion on the value of community-engaged research, which included two self-advocates and a clinical and pre-clinical researcher. Invited plenary speakers included Jill Locke, Ph.D., who provided an engaging introduction to implementation science, and Jared Young, Ph.D., who discussed cross-species domain task specificity. The meeting also included updates from three government agencies, short presentations by junior and senior investigators showcasing late-breaking FASD research, trainee award winners, and a presentation on the Toward Health Outcomes intervention roadmap by Jacqueline Pei, Ph.D. • The 2022 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Study Group returned to an in-person format. • The meeting had 124 registrants from multiple countries. • The meeting theme was "Enhancing the Relevance of Research for the Community." • Plenaries covered implementation science and cross-species task domain specificity. • Timothy A. The 2021 meeting of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Study Group (FASDSG) was titled "Role of Parental Experiences in Offspring Outcomes". The theme was reflected in the presentations of two keynote speakers: Edward Levin, Ph.D., who spoke about the role of paternal exposures in offspring development, and Catherine Monk, Ph.D., who spoke about the effects of maternal exposures and maternal mental health on offspring development. The conference included updates from three government agencies, short presentations by junior and senior investigators showcasing late-breaking FASD research, a report on international efforts to streamline FASD classifications for research, a presentation of observations from adults with FASD, a short film of people with FASDs describing their experiences, and a poster session. Adolescent girls whose families experience poverty are more vulnerable to psychopathology, and it is vital to investigate biopsychosocial factors contributing to mental health functioning. To test associations between prenatal exposure to substances, intergenerational maltreatment, and adolescent mental health symptoms. Baseline data were used from a randomized controlled trial testing the efficacy of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT-A) for depression among girls with and without maltreatment exposure. Adolescents (Aged 13–16; 63.5 % Black/African-American, 21.0 % White, 15.57 % other racial identity; 12.57 % Latina/x) were recruited from families experiencing financial adversity (income <200 % poverty threshold). Adolescent maltreatment status was determined by using multiple sources (child protective service records, parental report, and adolescent report). Mothers reported on prenatal substance exposure, experiences of maltreatment in their own childhood, and rated adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Latent Class Analysis was used to determine common patterns of prenatal substance exposure (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine). Structural Equation Modeling was used to evaluate associations between maltreatment in two generations, prenatal exposure to substances, and adolescent mental health symptoms. Two profiles of prenatal substance exposure emerged: one typified by low substance exposure (92.8 %), and one with moderate to high substance exposure (7.2 %). Both prenatal substance exposure and maternal history of maltreatment were associated with adolescent maltreatment, which in turn, was associated with greater adolescent externalizing symptoms. Parental history of maltreatment was directly associated with greater adolescent internalizing symptoms. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are present across countries and cultures, with prevalence rates threatening to rise in the coming years. In order to support children and families with FASD around the world, researchers must work to disseminate and implement evidence-based interventions. However, each cultural context presents unique elements and barriers to the implementation process. This review considers the challenges of addressing FASD in an international context. It summarizes existing FASD interventions that have empirical support in the domains of parenting and education, attention and self-regulation, adaptive functioning, and nutrition and medication. It then outlines cultural barriers pertaining to FASD that may impede the implementation process and makes suggestions for using purveyors as cultural liaisons between researchers and local stakeholders. Background and Aims: Limited research has focused on parenting practices used by caregivers raising children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). The current study hypothesized that parental attributions of children's misbehavior would relate to the parenting strategies caregivers utilize with children with FASD. This study also aimed to develop a coding scheme to allow quantification of these treatment-relevant constructs in future intervention trials.Methods: Thirty-one caregivers of children with FASD (age 4-8) were interviewed with the Parenting Practices Interview (PPI), a study-developed qualitative interview. Quantitative measures of FASD knowledge, parenting sense of competence and stress, and child behavior problems were included. Mixed-method analyses assessed the relationship between parental attributions of misbehavior and parenting practices.Results: Caregivers who attributed their child's misbehavior to underlying neurodevelopmental disabilities were more likely to use antecedent strategies and feel more confident in managing their child's behavior. Parents who attributed their child's misbehavior to willful disobedience were more likely to rely on consequence strategies and feel more ineffective.Conclusions: Results are consistent with theoretical models for FASD parent training interventions. Assessment of theorized mechanisms of change in intervention trials is needed; the development of the PPI and quantitative coding system will facilitate this type of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Attempts to understand the effects of maltreatment subtypes on childhood functioning are complicated by the fact that children often experience multiple subtypes. This study assessed the effects of maltreatment subtypes on the cognitive, academic, and mental health functioning of preadolescent youth in out-of-home care using both “variable-centered” and “person-centered” statistical analytic approaches to modeling multiple subtypes of maltreatment. Methods: Participants included 334 preadolescent youth (ages 9–11) placed in out-of-home care due to maltreatment. The occurrence and severity of maltreatment subtypes (physical abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect, and supervisory neglect) were coded from child welfare records. The relationships between maltreatment subtypes and children's cognitive, academic, and mental health functioning were evaluated with the following approaches: [(1)] “Variable-centered” analytic methods: [a.] Regression approach: Multiple regression was used to estimate the effects of each maltreatment subtype (separate analyses for occurrence and severity), controlling for the other subtypes. [b.] Hierarchical approach: Contrast coding was used in regression analyses to estimate the effects of discrete maltreatment categories that were assigned based on a subtype occurrence hierarchy (sexual abuse>physical abuse>physical neglect>supervisory neglect). [(2)] “Person-centered”analytic method: Latent class analysis was used to group children with similar maltreatment severity profiles into discrete classes. The classes were then compared to determine if they differed in terms of their ability to predict functioning. Results: The approaches identified similar relationships between maltreatment subtypes and children's functioning. The most consistent findings indicated that maltreated children who experienced physical or sexual abuse were at highest risk for caregiver-reported externalizing behavior problems, and those who experienced physical abuse and/or physical neglect were more likely to have higher levels of caregiver-reported internalizing problems. Children experiencing predominantly low severity supervisory neglect had relatively better functioning than other maltreated youth. Conclusions: Many of the maltreatment subtype differences identified within the maltreated sample in the current study are consistent with those from previous research comparing maltreated youth to non-maltreated comparison groups. Results do not support combining supervisory and physical neglect. The “variable-centered” and “person-centered” analytic approaches produced complementary results. Abstract: For children in out-of-home care, a significant gap exists between those who need services and those who receive them. Screening all children in out-of-home care is recommended to reduce this gap. This study was designed to determine if recommendations from mental health and educational screening evaluations were related to service implementation for youth in out-of-home care. Screening evaluations were completed with 171 maltreated youth (ages 9 to 11) who had been placed in out-of-home care within the prior year. Written reports summarizing the findings were provided to children''s caseworkers. Service utilization was assessed at baseline (T1; before screening reports were completed) and follow-up (T2; 9–12months later) interviews. For children not already receiving services at T1, logistic regression analyses tested the association between T1 recommendations for services and new service implementation by T2. Mental health (youth-report) and educational (teacher-report) outcomes were analyzed separately. Screening evaluations identified 22% of children with unmet mental health needs and 36% with unmet educational needs at T1. Children who received a recommendation for new services (i.e., all of those with unmet needs) were more likely to receive mental health (OR=2.50, p =.06) and/or educational (OR=3.54, p =.04) services by T2 than children who did not receive recommendations for services. While recommendations increased the odds of receiving services, almost half of the children with unmet mental health needs did not receive services, and 84% of children with unmet educational needs did not receive services by T2. Abstract: Objective: The occurrence of pediatric asthma has been associated with exposure to chronic stress. This study examined the relationship between maternal and community risk factors and asthma in a sample of maltreated children in foster care. Method: Interviews were conducted with 365 maltreated children in foster care. Measures included youth/caregiver reports of asthma, an index of maternal risk based on data abstracted from child welfare records and community violence exposure. Results: After controlling for demographic variables, maternal risk was associated with the presence of asthma (OR=1.314, 95% CI=1.09–1.58). Community violence exposure, however, was not related to the presence of asthma. Conclusion: Maternal risk factors were significantly associated with the presence of asthma in a foster care population. Physicians who care for maltreated children in foster care should be particularly attuned to the presence of these additional risk factors that may place high-risk children at increased risk for chronic health problems. Background: Caregivers of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) have elevated levels of stress, which can negatively impact family functioning and caregivers' mental and physical health. Self-care is a critical resource to address caregivers' stress.Aims: This study describes strategies and obstacles related to self-care reported by caregivers of children with FASD. It also examines how caregivers' perceived confidence in and frequency of self-care is related to stress, parenting attitudes, and family needs.Methods& Procedures: Forty-six caregivers of children with FASD identified self-care strategies and obstacles and rated their confidence and frequency of self-care. Additional measures of perceived parenting efficacy, stress, family needs, child behavior, and family demographics were administered. Correlation analyses examined associations between self-care and measures of child and family functioning.Results: Self-care strategies and obstacles were varied. Greater reported confidence in self-care was associated with less parental distress and more satisfaction in the parenting role. Frequency of self-care was positively associated with confidence in self-care but not with any other measure of family functioning.Conclusions: Caregivers use a variety of strategies and face significant obstacles in self-care. Confidence in self-care may be associated with lower stress and greater satisfaction in the parenting role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The theme reflected the ongoing NIH initiative to address sex differences in both clinical and preclinical research. The first keynote speaker, Jill Becker, Ph.D., addressed sex differences in addiction in preclinical studies. The second keynote speaker, Meeyoung Min, Ph.D., discussed effects of gender on adolescent outcomes in poly-drug exposed children. The conference presented updates from three government agencies, a discussion panel of new data on FASD prevalence, and short presentations by junior and senior investigators showcasing late-breaking FASD research.
