This paper presents a state of art literature review of slip power recovery scheme (SPRS) as an adjustable speed alternating current (AC) drive with various control methodologies for performance enhancement of electric drives. Starting from the brief history of components of control methodologies for SPRS to various control techniques including inverter control, chopper control, field oriented control, vector control, matrix converter control, microprocessor control, sliding mode control, digital signal processing control, neural network control, fuzzy logic control, and optimal control have been reviewed in this paper. The literature related to harmonic analysis of SPRS and use of SPRS in wind power generation has also been reviewed in this research paper. The paper is focused on providing a comprehensive perspective on the state of art of SPRS to the researchers, manufacturers, industries, and application engineers dealing with adjustable speed SPRS drives. The contributions of various researchers in this area have been presented in a classified manner which will serve the reader as a quick, useful, and ready reference. This paper presents a preliminary Wind Power Potential (WPP) assessment for coastal site Bheemunipatnam located in the northern region of Andhra Pradesh, India. The novelty and major contribution of this paper stems from the fact that till date WPP has been done only up to the height of 80 m and no one has attempted it up to the height of 150 m in the steps of 10 m for said site. Power law has been used to estimate WPP at these heights. The paper will be a guiding document for policy makers, power and energy engineers as well as for researchers working in this area for providing solution to the problem of burgeoning gap between demand and supply of energy. The Cubic Factor (CF) method and Weibull model have been subjected in the present analysis. The long-term daily wind speed data for the period of 32 years (1983–2014) at a 10 m height has been collected from NASA website. In addition, Weibull and cumulative distribution functions have been determined at different heights. Finally, comparison of mean Wind Power Density (WPD) obtained from both the models has been statistically investigated, tested, and presented in section 5 and 6, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes refurbishment and uprating for existing hydro power plants which have been drawing attention of hydro power experts for quite some time. In all engineering projects, the economic aspect has been considered of paramount importance. It is cost that decides whether a certain project will be feasible or not. The problem of determining the cost of any scheme is often difficult, because the cost varies considerably with time and tariff conditions. In the present research work, a case study has been undertaken for economic analysis. In this case study, the second option of refurbishment and uprating has been explored. The new uprated capacity has been achieved in this research paper from a century old hydro power plants located in Himalayas. The major contributions of this research work have been that of increased capacity of existing power plant, and economic feasibility with minimum investment in minimum time frame. Such an approach is of great significance to society as it has least impact on both the society and environment and at the same time it results in availability of more energy and increased generation capacity. Refurbishment and uprating of hydro power plants has become an important issue for power generation experts and the utilities because of perennial shortage of power and slow pace in new hydro power addition programmes. As a result, in the recent years there has been great deal of interest in refurbishment and uprating of hydro power plants (HPP) for effective utilization of water potential. The concern about the issue has resulted from the large number of power houses in India which have outlived their useful life or are not operating optimally due to inadequacies in design. Hence, refurbishment and uprating of hydro power plants is the need of the day. To accomplish such a task various aspects of refurbishment and uprating of hydro power plants need to be reviewed. The present paper focuses on the research activities and practical experience in the area of refurbishment and uprating of hydro power plants. This exhaustive review consisting of about 214 research papers, reports, guidelines and standards will be of great help to the researchers, hydro power utilities and energy policy planners. Voltage stability is concerned with the ability of a power system to maintain acceptable voltages at all buses in the system under normal conditions and after being subjected to a disturbance. This paper presents a new technique to determine the static voltage stability of load buses in a power system for a certain operating condition and hence identifies load buses which are close to voltage collapse. A voltage stability index with respect to a load bus is formulated from the voltage equation derived from a two bus network and it is computed using Thevenin equivalent circuit of the power system referred to a load bus.. Buses with values of voltage stability factors close to 1 .0 are identified as the critical buses. And after that, an Artificial Neural Network is developed for voltage stability monitoring. Hydro power generation is considered one of the best among other commercial power generation techniques due to a number of advantages. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has received increased attention in many research fields recently. In the present paper, particle swarm optimization technique, a relatively new technique for hydro power plant has been applied for the optimization of benefit cost ratio. Considering various cost factors and revenue generation of hydro power plant benefit cost ration has been determined which comes out to be well above unity, a qualifying criteria for economic viability of hydro power plants. This analysis of benefit cost ratio has been carried out based upon direct costs and revenue generated from thereof.
