The 3A-deoxy-3A-(2-methylaminopyridine)-2A(S),3A(R)-β-cyclodextrin (CDampy3) was synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The proton and copper(II) complex formation and stability of this new β-cyclodextrin derivative were determined by potentiometric and calorimetric investigations, carried out in aqueous solution at 25 °C and I=0.1 mol dm−3 (KNO3). The ΔH° and ΔS° values allowed to bring to light the role of the hydrogen bond between the amine and the hydroxyl groups in the basicity decrease of NH group of this 3-functionalized β-cyclodextrin. The comparison between the log K values of copper(II) complexes with CDampy3 and those of 6-deoxy-6-(2-methylaminopyridine)-β-cyclodextrin (CDampy6) allowed to determine the donor atoms involved in the coordination to metal ion. The high stability constant of [Cu(CDampy3)]2+ in comparison with [Cu(CDampy6)]2+ was attributed to the involvement of the OH groups in the binding to copper(II) ion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Carnosine (β-alanyl-l-histidine) is an endogenous dipeptide, extensively studied owing to its multifunctional activity exhibited in tissues of several animal species. This natural compound may act as a physiological buffer, ion-chelating agent (especially for copper(II) and zinc(II)), antioxidant and antiglycating agent. The main limit for the therapeutical uses of carnosine is the rapid hydrolysis mostly in human plasma by carnosinase. The chemical derivatization of carnosine is a promising strategy to improve the bioavailability of the dipeptide and facilitating the site-specific transport to different tissues. On this basis, a new carnosine derivative with biotin was synthesized and structurally characterized by NMR and MS measurements, with aim of exploiting the avidin–biotin technology that offers a universal system for selective delivery of any biotinylated agent. The stability of the new carnosine derivative towards the hydrolytic action of serum carnosinase as well as the copper(II) binding ability of the carnosine–biotin conjugate were also assessed. The binding affinity of the new molecular entity to avidin and streptavidin, investigated by a spectrophotometric assay, was exploited to functionalize avidin– and streptavidin–gold nanoparticles with the carnosine–biotin conjugate. Copper is involved in several biological processes. The static and labile copper pools are controlled by means of a network of influx and efflux transporters, storage proteins, chaperones, transcription factors and small molecules as glutathione (GSH), which contributes to the cell reducing environment. To follow the fate of intracellular copper labile pool, a variant of human apocarbonic anhydrase has been proposed as fluorescent probe to monitor cytoplasmic Cu2+. Aware that in this cellular compartment copper ion is present as Cu+, electron spin resonance technique (ESR) was used to ascertain whether (bovine or human) carbonic anhydrase (CA) was able to accommodate Cu+ in the same sites occupied by Cu2+, in the presence of naturally occurring reducing agents such as ascorbate and GSH. Our ESR results on Cu2+ complexes with CA allow for a complete characterization of the two metal binding sites of the protein in solution. The use of the reported affinity constants of zinc in the catalytic site and of Cu2+ in the peripheral and catalytic site, allow us to obtain the speciation of copper species mimicking the spectroscopic study conditions. The different Cu2+ coordination features in the catalytic and the peripheral (the N-terminus cleft mouth) binding sites influence the chemical reduction effect of the two main naturally occurring reductants. Ascorbate reversibly reduces the Cu2+ complex with CA, while glutathione irreversibly induces the formation of Cu2+ complex with its oxidized form (GSSG). Our results questioned the use of CA as intracellular Cu2+ sensor. Furthermore, translating these findings to intracellular environment, the conversion of GSH in GSSG can significantly alter the metallostasis. Islet transplantation is a valid therapeutic option for type 1 diabetes treatment. However, in this procedure one of the major problems is the oxidative stress produced during pancreatic islet isolation. The aim of our study was to evaluate potential protective effects of L-carnosine and its isomer D-carnosine against oxidative stress. We evaluated the carnosine effect on cell growth, cell death, insulin production, and the main markers of oxidative stress in rat and murine stressed beta cell lines as well as in human pancreatic islets. Both isomers clearly inhibited hydrogen peroxide induced cytotoxicity, with a decrease in intracellular reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, prevented hydrogen peroxide induced apoptosis/necrosis, nitrite production, and reduced glucose-induced insulin secretion. In addition, NF-κB expression/translocation and nitrated protein induced in stressed cells was significantly reduced. Furthermore, both isomers improved survival and function, and decreased reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, and nitrite and nitrotyrosine production in human islets cultured for 1, 3, and 7 days. These results seem to indicate that both L and D-carnosine have a significant cytoprotective effect by reducing oxidative stress in beta cell lines and human islets, suggesting their potential use to improve islet survival during the islet transplantation procedure. A novel water-soluble ionophore based on the thiocarbohydrazone moiety conjugated with glucose ( GluTch ) was synthesized through a simple two-step procedure. Structural elucidation was carried out in water solution by means of various spectroscopic techniques (NMR, UV–Vis, and CD), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations. The flexible nature of the thiocarbohydrazone moiety of the new glycoderivative compound induced both different coordination motifs and stoichiometry towards copper and zinc. Cytotoxicity assays of the ligands on the human normal keratinocyte NCTC-2544, MDA-MB-231 breast cancer and PC-3 human prostate adenocarcinoma cell lines demonstrated that i) higher activity on cancer cells growth inhibition compared to a normal cell line; ii) the introduction of the glucose unit does not alter the cytotoxic activity of the underivatized ionophore ligand and iii) the presence of copper ion improves the activity of the thiocarbohydrazones. Increasing evidence is accumulating, showing that neurodegenerative disorders are somehow associated with the toxicity of amyloid aggregates, metal ion dyshomeostasis as well as with products generated by oxidative stress. Within the biological oxidation products, acrolein does have a prominent role. A promising strategy to deal with the above neurogenerative disorders is to use multi-functions bio-molecules. Herein, we show how a class of bio-conjugates takes advantage of the antiaggregating, antioxidant and antiglycating properties of trehalose and carnosine. Their ability to sequester acrolein and to inhibit both self- and metal-induced aggregation is here reported. The vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) is a potent angiogenic factor, its activity may be influenced by the presence of copper(II) ions. To mimic the interaction between copper(II) and VEGF (Vascular Endotelial Growth Factor), the N- and C-terminally blocked peptide fragments VEGF73-101 and VEGF84-101, owing to VEGF165 protein, have been synthesized. These protein domains represent a specific recognition site with the VEGF receptor (VEGFR). Copper(II) complexes with VEGF73-101 and VEGF84-101 were investigated by means of potentiometry and UV-Vis, ESI-MS, CD, EPR spectroscopic methods. Both peptides have three histidine residues and display a binding high affinity for copper(II) ions. The proliferative activity of the peptides in the absence and presence of copper(II) ions as well as of VEGF-165 protein was also tested on HUVEC cells (Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells). The VEGF73-101 showed a dose-dependent anti-proliferative activity, while the shorter peptide VEGF84-101 did not affect HUVEC proliferation, both in the presence and in the absence of VEGF. Copper is a catalytic cofactor required for the normal function of many enzymes involved in fundamental biological processes but highly cytotoxic when in excess. Therefore its homeostasis and distribution is strictly regulated by a network of transporters and intracellular chaperones. ATOX1 (antioxidant protein 1) is a copper chaperone that plays a role in copper homeostasis by binding and transporting cytosolic copper to ATPase proteins in the trans -Golgi network. In the present study the Caco-2 cell line, a colon carcinoma cell line, was used as an in vitro model to evaluate if ATOX1 deficiency could affect sensitivity to experimentally induced copper dyshomeostasis. Silencing of ATOX1 increased toxicity of a short treatment with a high concentration of Cu 2 + . Copper ionophores, such as 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinoline, induced a copper-dependent cell toxicity which was significantly potentiated after ATOX1 silencing. The copper chelator TPEN (N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis (2-pyridylmethyl) ethylenediamine) produced a form of cell toxicity that was reversed by the addition of Cu 2 + . ATOX1 silencing increased Caco-2 cell sensitivity to TPEN toxicity. Our results suggest the possibility of a therapy with copper-chelating or ionophore drugs in subtypes of tumors showing specific alterations in ATOX1 expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study addresses the reconstruction of the free-energy landscapes of amyloid-beta1-42 (Aβ 42 ) coordinated respectively with one and two zinc ions, to scrutinize whether different Aβ–zinc complex species, i.e., mononuclear and dinuclear metal complexes, induce different Aβ conformation features. We found a subtle switch of intramolecular interactions, depending both on the zinc coordination environment and on the peptide to zinc stoichiometric ratio. On the one side, hairpin-like structures are predominant in mononuclear complexes, where a salt-bridge that involves Lys28-Glu22 and Lys16-Asp23 is stabilized. On the other side, elongated conformations are instead stabilized in the dinuclear zinc complexes. Experimental studies of atomic force microscopy as well as of zinc–Aβ complex species distribution diagrams provide evidence that the theoretical calculations can be rationalized in terms of the correlation between the increased amount of amorphous aggregates and the Aβ/Zn 2 + ratio. Angiogenin (ANG), a member of the secreted ribonuclease family, is a potent angiogenesis stimulator that interacts with endothelial cells inducing a wide range of responses. Metal ions dyshomeostasis play a fundamental role in the onset of neurodegenerative diseases, in particular copper that is also involved in angiogenesis processes. It is known that vascular pathologies are present in neurodegenerative diseases and Angiogenin is down-regulated in Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases, as well as it has been found as one of the mutated genes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Copper (II) induces an increase of Angiogenin binding to endothelial cells but, so far, the relationship between copper-ANG and angiogenesis induction remain unclear. Herein, the effects of copper (II) ions on Angiogenin activity and expression were evaluated. The binding of copper was demonstrated to affect the intracellular localization of the protein decreasing its nuclear translocation. Moreover, the ANG-copper (II) system negatively affects the protein-induced angiogenesis, as well as endothelial cells migration. Surprisingly, copper also reveals the ability to modulate the Angiogenin transcription. These results highlight the tight relationship between copper and Angiogenin, pointing out the biological relevance of ANG-copper system in the regulation of endothelial cell function, and revealing a possible new mechanism at the basis of vascular pathologies. Heptapeptide Semax, encompassing the sequence 4-7 of N-terminal domain of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide, belongs to a short regulatory peptides family. This compound has been found to affect learning processes and to exert marked neuroprotective activities on cognitive brain functions. Dys-homeostasis of metal ions is involved in several neurodegenerative disorders and growing evidences have showed that brain is a specialized organ able to concentrate metal ions. In this work, the metal binding ability and protective activity of Semax and its metal complexes were studied. The equilibrium study clearly demonstrated the presence of three complex species. Two minor species [CuL] and [CuLH − 1 ] − co-exist together with the [CuLH − 2 ] 2 − in the pH range from 3.6 to 5. From pH 5 the [CuLH − 2 ] 2 − species becomes predominant with the donor atoms around copper arranged in a 4 N planar coordination mode. Noteworthy, a reduced copper induced cytotoxicity was observed in the presence of Semax by MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assay on a SHSY5Y neuroblastoma and RBE4 endothelial cell lines. Abstract: Homocarnosine is an endogenous dipeptide distributed in cerebral regions and cerebrospinal fluid. Homocarnosine may serve as an antioxidant, free radical scavenger, neurotransmitter, buffering system and metal chelating agent, especially for copper(II) and zinc(II). The homeostasis of homocarnosine is regulated by carnosinases; the serum-circulating isoform of these metallodipeptidases partially hydrolyses homocarnosine in the blood. The enzyme activity is also inhibited by homocarnosine itself in a dose-dependent manner. We synthesized a new multifunctional homocarnosine derivative with trehalose, a disaccharide that possesses several beneficial properties, among which the inhibition of protein aggregation (i.e. Aβ amyloid and polyglutamine proteins) involved in widespread neurodegenerative disorders. We studied the copper(II) binding features of the new conjugate by means of potentiometric and spectroscopic techniques (UV–visible and circular dichroism) and the superoxide dismutase-like activity of the copper(II) complexes with homocarnosine and its trehalose conjugate was evaluated. Abstract: Copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes with two hexapeptides encompassing HExxH and HxxEH motif were characterized by means of a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Parallel tempering and density functional theory (DFT) investigations show the presence of different hydrogen bonding networks between the copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes with the two peptides, suggesting a significant contribution of these non-covalent interactions to the stability constant values. The glutamate carboxylate group has a direct role in metal ion binding. The location of this amino acid along the sequence of the investigated peptides is critical to determine thermodynamic and spectroscopic features of the copper(II) complex species, whereas is less relevant in the zinc(II) complexes formation. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) characterization of the zinc(II) complex species show that in the [ZnH−2L] two deprotonated amide nitrogen atoms are involved in the metal coordination environment, an uncommon behavior in zinc(II) complexes for multi-histidine ligands. Abstract: Insulin degradation is a finely tuned process that plays a major role in controlling insulin action and most evidence supports IDE (insulin-degrading enzyme) as the primary degradative agent. However, the biomolecular mechanisms involved in the interaction between IDE and its substrates are often obscure, rendering the specific enzyme activity quite difficult to target. On the other hand, biometals, such as copper, aluminum and zinc, have an important role in pathological conditions such as Alzheimer''s disease or diabetes mellitus. The metabolic disorders connected with the latter lead to some metallostasis alterations in the human body and many studies point at a high level of interdependence between diabetes and several cations. We have previously reported (Grasso et al., Chem. Eur. J. 17 (2011) 2752–2762) that IDE activity toward Aβ peptides can be modulated by metal ions. Here, we have investigated the effects of different metal ions on the IDE proteolytic activity toward insulin as well as a designed peptide comprising a portion of the insulin B chain (B20–30), which has a very low affinity for metal ions. The results obtained by different experimental techniques clearly show that IDE is irreversibly inhibited by copper(I) but is still able to process its substrates when it is bound to copper(II). Abstract: The review describes the stability and the coordination modes of Cu2+ complexes with different regions of N-terminus prion proteins. The structural features of the different metal species are correlated both with the Cu2+-driven redox properties and with the conformational changes induced by the Cu2+ in the different metal binding regions of the protein. The formation of mixed metal complexes is also discussed. We emphasize that binding features should be discussed by referring to the species that actually forms under specific conditions (pH, buffer, etc.) rather than to the “binding site”; correlating properties with the structures of the so called ‘binding sites’ may lead to misinterpretation of the experimental results, since a ‘binding site’ often corresponds to a mixture of species. We also highlight that ignoring species that form with ligands other than the prion peptide (e.g. the buffer) may lead to underestimating their role in crucial processes (e.g. redox activity). Abstract: Mixed metal copper(II)-nickel(II) and copper(II)-zinc(II) complexes of four peptide fragments of human prion protein have been studied by potentiometric, UV–vis and circular dichroism spectroscopic techniques. One peptide contained three histidyl residues: HuPrP(84–114) with H85 inside and H96, H111 outside the octarepeat domain. The other three peptides contained two histidyl residues; H96 and H111 for HuPrP(91–115) and HuPrP(84–114)H85A while HuPrP(84–114)H96A contained the histidyl residues at positions 85 and 111. It was found that both histidines of the latter peptides can simultaneously bind copper(II) and nickel(II) ions and dinuclear mixed metal complexes can exist in slightly alkaline solution. One molecule of the peptide with three histidyl residues can bind two copper(II) and one nickel(II) ions. H85 and H111 were identified as the major copper(II) and H96 as the preferred nickel(II) binding sites in mixed metal species. The studies on the zinc(II)-PrP peptide binary systems revealed that zinc(II) ions can coordinate to the 31-mer PrP peptide fragments in the form of macrochelates with two or three coordinated imidazol-nitrogens but the low stability of these complexes cannot prevent the hydrolysis of the metal ion in slightly alkaline solution. These data provide further support for the outstanding affinity of copper(II) ions towards the peptide fragments of prion protein but the binding of nickel(II) can significantly modify the distribution of copper(II) among the available metal binding sites. Abstract: The recent metal hypothesis represents an attempt of a new interpretation key of Alzheimer''s disease (AD) to overcome the limits of amyloid cascade. Neurons need to maintain metal ions within a narrow range of concentrations to avoid a detrimental alteration of their homeostasis, guaranteed by a network of specific metal ion transporters and chaperones. Indeed, it is well known that transition metal ions take part in neuromodulation/neurotrasmission. In addition, they are prominent factors in the development and exacerbation of neurodegeneration. Neurotrophins are proteins involved in development, maintenance, survival and synaptic plasticity of central and peripheral nervous systems. A neurotrophin hypothesis of AD has been proposed, whereas the link between neurotrophic factor, the amyloid cascade and biometals has not been taken into account. As a matter of fact, there is a significant overlap between brain areas featured by metal ion dys-homeostasis, and those where the neurotrophins exert their biological activity. Metal ions can directly modulate their activities, through conformational changes, and/or indirectly by activating their downstream signaling in a neurotrophin-independent mode. The focus of this review is on the molecular aspects of Zn2+ and Cu2+ interactions with neurotrophins, with the aim to shed light on the intricate mechanisms involving metallostasis and proteostasis in AD. Abstract: GHHPH is the peptide repeat present in histidine–proline rich glycoprotein (HPRG), a plasma glycoprotein involved in angiogenesis process. The copper(II) ions interaction with mono (Ac-GHHPHG-NH2) and its bis-repeat (Ac-GHHPHGHHPHG-NH2) was investigated by means of potentiometric and spectroscopic techniques. To single out the copper(II) coordination environments of different species formed with Ac-GHHPHG-NH2, three single point mutated peptides were also synthesized and their ability to coordinate Cu2+ investigated. Ac-GHHPHG-NH2 binds Cu2+ by the imidazole side chain and the amide nitrogen deprotonation that takes place towards the N-terminus. The bis-repeat is able to bind Cu2+ more efficiently than Ac-GHHPHG-NH2. This difference is not only due to the number of His residues in the sequence but also to the different binding sites. In fact, the comparison of the potentiometric and spectroscopic data of the copper(II) complexes with a bis-repeatPeg construct Ac-(GHHPHG)-Peg-(GHHPHG)-NH2 and those of the metal complexes with Ac-HGHH-NH2, indicates that the central HGHH amino acid sequence is the main copper(II) binding site. Abstract: Modulation of endogenous cellular defense mechanisms represents an innovative approach to therapeutic intervention in diseases causing chronic tissue damage, such as in neurodegeneration. This paper introduces the emerging role of exogenous molecules in hormetic-based neuroprotection and the mitochondrial redox signaling concept of hormesis and its applications to the field of neuroprotection and longevity. Maintenance of optimal long-term health conditions is accomplished by a complex network of longevity assurance processes that are controlled by vitagenes, a group of genes involved in preserving cellular homeostasis during stressful conditions. Vitagenes encode for heat shock proteins (Hsp) Hsp32, Hsp70, the thioredoxin and the sirtuin protein systems. Dietary antioxidants, such as polyphenols and L-carnitine/acetyl-L-carnitine, have recently been demonstrated to be neuroprotective through the activation of hormetic pathways, including vitagenes. Hormesis provides the central underpinning of neuroprotective responses, providing a framework for explaining the common quantitative features of their dose response relationships, their mechanistic foundations, their relationship to the concept of biological plasticity as well as providing a key insight for improving the accuracy of the therapeutic dose of pharmaceutical agents within the highly heterogeneous human population. This paper describes in mechanistic detail how hormetic dose responses are mediated for endogenous cellular defense pathways including sirtuin, Nrfs and related pathways that integrate adaptive stress responses in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. Abstract: l-Carnosine is an endogenously synthesized dipeptide composed of beta-alanine and l-histidine. It acts as a free radical scavenger and possesses antioxidant properties. l-Carnosine reduces proinflammatory and profibrotic cytokines such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), interleukin (IL)-1, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha in different experimental settings. In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of l and d-carnosine on the animal model of spinal cord injury (SCI). The spinal cord was exposed via a four-level T5–T8 laminectomy and SCI was produced by extradural compression of the spinal cord at level T6–T7 using an aneurysm clip with a closing force of 24g. Treatment with d-carnosine (150mg/kg administered i.p., 1h and 6h, after SCI), but not l-carnosine significantly decreased (a) the degree of spinal cord inflammation and tissue injury (histological score), (b) neutrophil infiltration (myeloperoxidase activity), (c) nitrotyrosine formation, inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and Hsp70 expression, (d) proinflammatory cytokines, and (e) apoptosis (TUNEL staining, Fas ligand, Bax, and Bcl-2 expression). Furthermore, d-carnosine (150mg/kg administered i.p., 1h and 6h, after SCI) significantly ameliorated the loss of limb function (evaluated by motor recovery score). Taken together, our results demonstrate the strong difference between l-carnosine and d-carnosine. The result strongly suggests that d-carnosine treatment reduces the development of inflammation and tissue injury associated with spinal cord trauma. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Understanding mechanisms of aging and determinants of life span will help to reduce age-related morbidity and facilitate healthy aging. Average lifespan has increased over the last centuries, as a consequence of medical and environmental factors, but maximal life span remains unchanged. Extension of maximal life span is currently possible in animal models with measures such as genetic manipulations and caloric restriction (CR). CR appears to prolong life by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidative damage. But ROS formation, which is positively implicated in cellular stress response mechanisms, is a highly regulated process controlled by a complex network of intracellular signaling pathways. By sensing the intracellular nutrient and energy status, the functional state of mitochondria, and the concentration of ROS produced in mitochondria, the longevity network regulates life span across species by co-ordinating information flow along its convergent, divergent and multiply branched signaling pathways, including vitagenes which are genes involved in preserving cellular homeostasis during stressful conditions. Vitagenes encode for heat shock proteins (Hsp) Hsp32, Hsp70, the thioredoxin and the sirtuin protein systems. Given the broad cytoprotective properties of the heat shock response there is now strong interest in discovering and developing pharmacological agents capable of inducing stress responses. In this review we discuss the most current and up to date understanding of the possible signaling mechanisms by which caloric restriction, as well hormetic caloric restriction–mimetics compounds by activating vitagenes can enhance defensive systems involved in bioenergetic and stress resistance homeostasis with consequent impact on longevity processes. Abstract: Carnosine (β-alanyl-l-histidine) is a natural dipeptide widely and abundantly distributed in excitable tissues of several animal tissues. Although its physiological role has not been completely understood yet, many beneficial actions have been attributed to carnosine, such as being an antioxidant, antiglycating and ion-chelating agent, a wound healing promoter and a free-radical scavenger. The role of carnosine in the neuroprotection of oxidative stress-driven disorders has been reviewed. The effects of carnosine have been extensively studied both in vivo and in vitro models of cerebral damages, such as neurodegenerative disorders and hypoxia–ischemia injuries. Beside the classical sacrificial agent, carnosine has been reevaluated as a molecular chaperon and an inducer of antioxidant systems in oxidative stress conditions. Thus, beneficial effects on most of the common biochemical events that characterize neurological disorders make carnosine a very promising molecule among all the endogenous compounds in the treatment and/or prevention of oxidative driven diseases. Abstract: Carnosine (β-alanyl-L-histidine) is an endogenous dipeptide widely and abundantly distributed in muscle and nervous tissues of several animal species. Many functions have been proposed for this compound, such as antioxidant and metal ion-chelator properties. However, the main limitation on therapeutic use of carnosine on pathologies related to increased oxidative stress and/or metal ion dishomeostasis is associated with the hydrolysis by the specific dipeptidase carnosinase. Several attempts have been made to overcome this limitation. On this basis, we functionalized carnosine and its amide derivative with small sugars such as glucose and lactose. The resistance of these derivatives to the carnosinase hydrolysis was tested and compared with that of carnosine. We found that the glycoconjugation protects the dipeptide moiety from carnosinase hydrolysis, thus potentially improving the availability of carnosine. The copper(II) binding properties of all the new synthesized compounds were investigated by spectroscopic (UV–Visible and circular dichroism) and ESI-MS studies. Particularly, the new family of amide derivatives that are not significantly hydrolyzed by carnosinase is a very promising class of carnosine derivatives. The sugar moiety can act as a recognition element. These new derivatives are potentially able to act as chelating agents in the development of clinical approaches for the regulation of metal homeostasis in the field of medicinal inorganic chemistry.
