- Abstract
Rare event physics demands very detailed background control, high-performance detectors, and custom analysis strategies. Cryogenic calorimeters combine all these ingredients very effectively, representing a promising tool for next-generation experiments. CUPID-0 is one of the most advanced examples of such a technique, having demonstrated its potential with several results obtained with limited exposure. In this paper, we present a further application. Exploiting the analysis of delayed coincidence, we can identify the signals caused by the 220Rn-216Po decay sequence on an event-by-event basis. The analysis of these events allows us to extract the time differences between the two decays, leading to a new evaluation of 216Po half-life, estimated as ms.

- Abstract
The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a ton-scale experiment made of TeO2 bolometers that will probe the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Excellent energy resolution, low threshold and low background make CUORE sensitive to nuclear recoils, allowing a search for dark matter interactions. With a total mass of 741 kg of TeO2, CUORE can search for an annual modulation of the counting rate at low energies. We present data obtained with CUORE-like detectors and the prospects for a dark matter search in CUORE-0, a 40-kg prototype, and CUORE.

We have developed and tested a new way of coupling bolometric light detectors to scintillating crystal bolometers based upon simply resting the light detector on the crystal surface, held in position only by gravity. This straightforward mounting results in three important improvements: (1) it decreases the amount of non-active materials needed to assemble the detector, (2) it substantially increases the light collection efficiency by minimizing the light losses induced by the mounting structure, (3) and it enhances the thermal signal induced in the light detector thanks to the extremely weak thermal link to the thermal bath. We tested this new technique with a 16 cm 2 Ge light detector with thermistor readout sitting on the surface of a large TeO 2 bolometer. The light collection efficiency was increased by greater than 50% compared to previously tested alternative mountings. We obtained a baseline energy resolution on the light detector of 20 eV RMS that, together with increased light collection, enabled us to obtain the best α vs β ∕ γ discrimination ever obtained with massive TeO 2 crystals. At the same time we achieved rise and decay times of 0.8 and 1.6 ms, respectively. This superb performance meets all of the requirements for the CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle IDentification) experiment, which is a 1-ton scintillating bolometer follow up to CUORE. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) experiment at Gran Sasso National Laboratory of INFN searches for neutrinoless double beta decay using TeO 2 crystals as cryogenic bolometers. The sensitivity of the measurement heavily depends on the energy resolution of the detector, therefore the success of the experiment stands on the capability to provide an extremely low noise environment. One of the most relevant sources of noise are the mechanical vibrations induced by the five Pulse Tube cryocoolers used on the cryogenic system which houses the detectors. To address this problem, we developed a system to control the relative phases of the pulse tube pressure oscillations, in order to achieve coherent superposition of the mechanical vibrations transmitted to the detectors. In the following, we describe this method and report on the results in applying it to the CUORE system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Present study demonstrates that antiviral treatment plays an anti-lymphoma activity in HCV-associated indolent B-cell lymphomas and that the use of antiviral treatment at any time during the life of these patients is clearly associated with improved outcome.Despite the limitations related to retrospective nature of the study, in absence of effective methodological alternatives, present data may impact the standard of care. Background Tumor regression after antiviral therapy (AT) is in favor of an etiological role of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphomas (NHL). Patients and methods We carried out a cohort study of 704 consecutive HIV-negative, HCV-positive patients with indolent NHL diagnosed and treated from 1993 to 2009 in 39 centers of the Fondazione Italiana Linfomi; 134 patients were managed with AT for lymphoma control. Results For entire cohort, 5-year overall survival (OS) was 78% [95% confidence interval (CI): 74%–82%] and 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 48% (95% CI: 44%–53%). In multivariate analysis, the use of AT during the patients’ life had positive impact on OS. Forty-four of the 100 patients treated with first-line AT achieved a complete remission (CR) and 33 a partial response (PR). HCV-RNA clearance was achieved in 80 patients and was related to lymphoma response. At a median follow-up of 3.6 years, 5-year PFS was 63% (95% CI: 50%–73%). CR + PR rate was 85% with AT as second-line treatment. Conclusion AT produces HCV-RNA clearance and consequent tumor regression in most patients with HCV-related indolent NHL. AT used at any time is associated with improved OS. Consequently, AT can be considered an option for patients with indolent lymphomas who do not need immediate cytoreductive treatment. This subset analysis of the randomized FOLL05 trial demonstrated that post-induction PET can improve response assessment and is a strong independent prognostic tool in follicular lymphoma. Future studies should be designed to assess if a PET-driven approach could further improve outcome. Background [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (PET) is emerging as a strong diagnostic and prognostic tool in follicular lymphoma (FL) patients. Patients and methods In a subset analysis of the FOLL05 trial (NCT00774826), we investigated the prognostic role of post-induction PET (PI-PET) scan. Patients were eligible to this study if they had a PI-PET scan carried out within 3 months from the end of induction immunochemotherapy. Progression-free survival (PFS) was the primary study end point. Results A total of 202 patients were eligible and analysed for this study. The median age was 55 years (range 33–75). Overall, PI-PET was defined as positive in 49 (24%) patients. Conventional response assessment with CT scan was substantially modified by PET: 15% (22/145) of patients considered as having a complete response (CR) after CT were considered as having partial response (PR) after PI-PET and 53% (30/57) patients considered as having a PR after CT were considered as a CR after PI-PET. With a median follow-up of 34 months, the 3-year PFS was 66% and 35%, respectively, for patients with negative and positive PI-PET (P < 0.001). At multivariate analysis, PI-PET (hazard ratio 2.57, 95% confidence interval 1.52–4.34, P < 0.001) was independent of conventional response, FLIPI and treatment arm. Also, the prognostic role of PI-PET was maintained within each FLIPI risk group. Conclusions In FL patients, PI-PET substantially modifies response assessment and is strongly predictive for the risk of progression. PET should be considered in further updates of response criteria. Abstract: Zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystals are an excellent candidate material to fabricate scintillating bolometers for the study of neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo, provided that the crystal quality meets strict optical, thermal and radiopurity requirements. This paper addresses the characterization of improved crystalline samples grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. Transmittance measurements confirm significant improvement of the material with respect to previously developed samples. Luminescence properties (emission spectra, dependence of intensity on temperature, thermally stimulated luminescence and phosphorescence) have been studied under X-ray excitation from liquid-helium to room temperature. The index of refraction was measured in the wavelength interval 406–655nm. Samples of ZnMoO4 crystals with masses of 5.07g and 23.8g were operated as scintillating bolometers at temperatures below 30mK, with simultaneous detection of scintillation and heat signals, confirming an excellent alpha/beta rejection power. Background measurements allowed encouraging radiopurity level estimations. The light collection from ZnMoO4 scintillators was Monte Carlo simulated, analysing different crystal size, shape and surface properties and different photodetector sizes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background The role of [18F] fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) in follicular lymphoma (FL) staging is not yet determined. Patients and methods The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of PET in the initial staging of FL patients enrolled in the FOLL05-phase-III trial that compared first-line regimens (R-CVP, R-CHOP and R-FM). Patients should have undergone conventional staging and have available PET baseline to be included. Results A total of 142 patients were analysed. PET identified a higher number of nodal areas in 32% (46 of 142) of patients and more extranodal (EN) sites than computed tomography (CT) scan. Also, the Follicular Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (FLIPI) score increased in 18% (26 of 142) and decreased in 6% (9 of 142) of patients. Overall, the impact of PET on modifying the stage was highest in patients with limited stage. Actually, 62% (15 of 24) of cases with limited disease were upstaged with PET. Conclusions The inclusion of PET among staging procedures makes the evaluation of patients with FL more accurate and has the potential to modify therapy decision and prognosis in a moderate proportion of patients. Further prospective clinical trials on FL should incorporate PET at different moments, and the therapeutic criteria to start therapy should be re-visited in the views of this new tool. Abstract: In germanium-based light detectors for scintillating bolometers, a SiO2 anti-reflective coating is often applied on the side of the germanium wafer exposed to light with the aim to improve its light collection efficiency. In this paper, we report about a measurement, performed in the temperature range 25–35mK, of the light-collection increase obtained thanks to this method, which resulted to be of the order of 20%. The procedure followed has been carefully selected in order to minimize systematic effects. The employed light sources have the same spectral features (peaking at wavelength) that will characterize future neutrinoless double beta decay experiments on the isotope 82Se and based on ZnSe crystals, such as LUCIFER. The coupling between source and light detector reproduces the configuration used in scintillating bolometers. The present measurement clarifies the role of SiO2 coating and describes a method and a set-up that can be extended to the study of other types of coatings and luminescent materials. Abstract: The search for neutrinoless double β decay probes lepton number conservation with high sensitivity and investigates the neutrino nature and mass scale. Experiments presently in preparation will cover the quasi-degeneracy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Probing the inverted hierarchy region requires improved sensitivities and next-generation experiments, based either on large expansions of the present searches or on new ideas. We examine here a novel technology relying on ZnMoO4 scintillating bolometers, which can provide an experiment with background close to zero in the ton × year exposure scale. The promising performance of a pilot detector is presented, both in terms of energy resolution and background control. A preliminary study of the sensitivities of future experiments shows that the inverted hierarchy region is within the reach of the technique here proposed. A realistic phased approach program towards a next-generation search is presented and briefly discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: On the basis of the affinities at the α1a-, α1b- and α1d-adrenoceptors and the 5-HT1A receptor of a previous series of sixteen 2-[(2-phenoxyethyl)aminomethyl]-1,4-benzodioxanes ortho monosubstituted at the phenoxy moiety, a number of ortho disubstituted analogues were designed, synthesized in both the enantiomeric forms and tested in binding assays on the same receptors. The affinity values of the new compounds 1–11 were compared with those of the enantiomers of the 2,6-dimethoxyphenoxy analogue, the well-known α1 antagonist WB4101, and of the ortho monosubstituted derivatives, suggesting some distinctive aspects of the interaction of the phenoxy moiety, in particular with the α1a-AR and the 5-HT1A receptor, of the monosubstituted and the disubstituted compounds. A classical quantitative structure-activity relationship (Hansch) analysis was applied to the whole set of the S enantiomers of the ortho mono- and disubstituted WB4101 analogues (26 compounds), finding a very good correlation for the α1a affinity. For this latter, a significant parabolic relationship was also found with the volume of the two ortho substituents. Diametrically opposite, the same relationships for the 5-HT1A exhibit low or insignificant correlation coefficients. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

ANTIDOTES , *ANTICOAGULANTS , *INFLAMMATION , *CARDIOPULMONARY bypass - Abstract
Heparin and protamine are the standard anticoagulant–antidote regimen used in almost every cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedure even though both are associated with an array of complications and toxicities. Here we demonstrate that an anticoagulant aptamer–antidote pair targeting factor IXa can replace heparin and protamine in a porcine CPB model and also limit the adverse effects on thrombin generation, inflammation, and cardiac physiology associated with heparin and protamine use. These results demonstrate that targeting clotting factors upstream of thrombin in the coagulation cascade can potentially reduce the perioperative pathologies associated with CPB and suggest that the aptamer–antidote pair to FIXa may improve the outcome of patients undergoing CPB. In particular, this novel anticoagulant–antidote pair may prove to be useful in patients diagnosed with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia or those who have been sensitized to protamine, particularly patients who have insulin-dependent diabetes.Molecular Therapy (2006) 14, 408–415; doi: 10.1016/j.ymthe.2006.04.006 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIASTOLE (Cardiac cycle) , *LEFT heart ventricle , *HYPERTENSION - Abstract
In a relatively large population of patients with treated systemic hypertension and normal left ventricular systolic function, prevalence of abnormalities of left ventricular diastolic function, as assessed by Doppler echocardiographic study of mitral and pulmonary vein flow, was high, with 51% of patients showing indirect signs of increased left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. Furthermore, our data documented that a "normal" mitral flow profile does not exclude the presence of an abnormality of left ventricular filling, which could be otherwise identified by combined analysis of a pulmonary vein flow profile. CUPID-0 is the first large mass neutrino-less double beta decay ( 0 ν β β ) experiment based on cryogenic calorimeters with dual read-out of light and heat for background rejection. The detector assembly, consisting of 26 ZnSe crystals, 2 natural and 24 enriched at 95% in 82Se, all coupled with bolometric light detectors, has been constructed respecting very strict protocols and procedures, from the material selection during crystal growth to the new and innovative detector framework, in the attempt to achieve the best performance of the array. The successful construction of the detector lead to promising preliminary results, here presented. The array is in fact taking data underground at LNGS (Italy) since March 2017 and the particle identification, enabled by the light read-out, provides an unprecedented background level, for cryogenic calorimeters, of only 3.2 counts keV − 1 t − 1 yr − 1 in the region of interest of the 0 ν β β search for 82Se, namely around 3 MeV.

The background is the key issue of any experiment searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay (0 ν DBD) and one of the possible solutions is the use of high resolution detectors in which background can be actively discriminated. CUPID-0 is the first 0 ν DBD experiment based on scintillating bolometers able to perform efficient particle identification allowing for background reduction at the unprecedented level of ∼ 10−3 cts/(keV ⋅ kg ⋅ yr). This work makes an overview of the main problems and solutions applied in the construction of the CUPID-0 experimental apparatus, starting from the production of the crystal up to the assembly of the detector. Particular attention is payed to the methods applied to avoid the radio-contamination. The recovery of enriched Se loss along the crystal production cycle is discussed as the main challenge for the budget of this kind of experiments. The good bolometric performance of crystals is emphasized together with supplementary discrimination power offered in the case of ZnSe by the pulse shape analysis, besides the bare scintillation signal. We also make a brief report on detector performance and the results obtained till present which allowed us to establish the world best half-time limit on 82Se 0 ν DBD of >2.4 ⋅ 1024 yr (90% C.I.).
