Complex intracranial aneurysms (CIAs) comprise a subset of lesions with defiant vascular architecture, difficult access, and prior treatment. Surgical management of CIAs is often challenging and demands an assessment on a case-by-case basis. The generational evolution of bypass surgery has offered a long-standing potential for effective cerebral revascularization. Herein, we aim to illustrate a single-center experience treating CIAs. The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical records of patients treated with cerebral revascularization techniques at Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo, Lima, Peru, during 2018–2022. Relevant data were collected, including patient history, aneurysm features on imaging, preoperative complications, the intraoperative course, aneurysm occlusion rates, bypass patency, neurological function, and postoperative complications. Seventeen patients (70.59% female; median age: 53 years) with 17 CIAs (64.7% saccular; 76.5% ruptured) were included. The most common clinical presentation included loss of consciousness (70.6%) and headaches (58.8%). Microsurgical treatment included first-, second-, and third-generation bypass. In 47.1% of cases, an anastomosis between the superficial temporal artery and the M3 segment was predominantly used, followed by an A3-A3 bypass (29.4%), a superficial temporal artery-M2 bypass (17.6%), and an external carotid artery to M2 bypass (5.9%). The intraoperative aneurysm rupture rate was 11.8%. Postoperative complications included ischemia (40%), cerebrospinal fluid fistulas (26.7%), and pneumonia (20%). At hospital discharge, the median Glasgow Coma Scale score was 14 (range: 10–15). At the 6-month follow-up, 82.4% of patients had a modified Rankin Scale score ≤2, bypass patency was present in all cases, and the morbidity rate was 17.6%. CIAs represent a spectrum of defiant vascular lesions with a poor natural history. Bypass surgery offers the potential for definitive treatment. Our case series illustrated the predominant role of cerebral revascularization of CIAs with a critical case-by-case approach to provide optimal outcomes in a limited-resource setting. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies have been introduced to neurosurgery with the goal of improving the experience of human visualization. In recent years, the application of remote AR and VR has opened new horizons for neurosurgical collaboration across diverse domains of education and patient treatment. Herein, we aimed to systematically review the literature about the feasibility of this technology and discuss the technical aspects, current limitations, and future perspectives. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, 4 databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library) were queried for articles discussing the use of remote AR and VR technologies in neurosurgery. Data were collected in various fields, including surgery type, application type, subspecialty, software and hardware descriptions, haptic device utilization, visualization technology, internet connection, remote site descriptions, technical outcomes, and limitations. Data were summarized as counts and proportions and analyzed using IBM SPSS software. Our search strategy generated 466 records, out of which 9 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria. The majority of AR and VR applications were used in cranial procedures (77.8%), mainly in education (63.6%), followed by telesurgical assistance (18.2%), patient monitoring (9.1%), and surgical planning (9.1%). Local collaborations were established in 55.6% of the studies, while national and international partnerships were formed in 44.4% of the studies. AR was the main visualization technology, and 3G internet connection was predominantly used (27.5%). All studies subjectively reported the utility of remote AR and VR for real-time interaction. The major technical challenges and limitations included audiovisual latency, the requirement for higher-fidelity and resolution image reconstructions, and the level of proficiency of the patient with the software. The results from this systematic review suggest that AR and VR technologies are dynamically advancing to offer remote collaboration in neurosurgery. Although still incipient in development and with an imperative need for technical improvement, remote AR and VR hold a frontierless potential for patient monitoring, neurosurgical education, and long-distance surgical assistance. Spirulina was overlooked as a promising future food source until the 1950s. Its industrial production is more recent and still faces various challenges that go beyond the high production costs and the intense "marine" flavour. Despite these challenges, its industrial use is a reality and foods enriched with Spirulina or coloured using Spirulina-derived pigments, are available on the market. In this review, we discuss overlooked problems faced by Spirulina producers including complex process control, the appearance of algal predators, and environmental impacts. The review also summarises some of the most common uses of Spirulina as a food and as a source of biologically active compounds. The main use of Spirulina continues to be food production; however, the current trend is to identify novel applications related to health promotion. High production costs and especially its low production capacity continue to limit the development of novel foods. Spirulina is mainly used as a colouring additive or as a part of a marketing strategy. Various human intervention studies suggest its potential use in the prevention of metabolic syndrome. [Display omitted] • Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) nanowires (AgNWs) were synthesized. • AgNPs and AgNWs were dispersed into a liquid acrylic resin to form nanocomposites. • The thermal diffusivity and curing time of the nanocomposites were determined. • Scaffolds of the nanocomposites were 3D printed. • Physicochemical and mechanical characterization of the nanocomposites were done. The aim of this work was to design and build novel scaffolds of different composition for application of 3D printing in organic tissues and to determine the thermal properties of these nanocomposites; therefore, novel silver/acrylic composites based on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) of 15.7 nm average in diameter synthesized by a green method, and silver nanowires (AgNWs) of 50 nm in diameter and 1.5 µm in length synthesized by the polyol method were successfully prepared. Thermal lens spectroscopy (TLS) in a mismatched configuration was used to determine the liquid sample's thermal diffusivity (D), and photoacoustic spectroscopy (PA) in an open cell (OPC) configuration was used to determine the nanocomposite's characteristic curing time (τ). Values of D for the AgNPs range from 14.8 x 10-8 to 47.4 x 10-8 m2/s (4.5 to 18.5 x 10-5 wt%) with curing times (τ) of 26.7 to 57.7 s. On the other hand, the values of D for the AgNWs composites were between 6.6 x 10-8 and 36.6 x 10-8 m2/s (4.1 to 16.5 x 10-5 wt%) with curing times (τ) of 482.9 s to 1650.9 s (4.1 to 12.8 x 10-5 wt%). Scaffolds were 3D printed with a lithographic printer prototype whose experimental variables were optimized using an experimental design (DOE). Characterization techniques as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV–vis spectroscopy were used to determine AgNPs, AgNWs and resin's morphology, physical and chemical aspects. Shore hardness D tester was used to analyze the scaffolds mechanical behavior with a linear increase for the AgNPs composites and non-linear trend for the AgNWs composites. From the results, an improvement and optimization of the thermal diffusivity, mechanical properties and curing time of the new nanocomposites was obtained with the increase in concentration. Elaborar recomendaciones SER sobre el uso de agentes biológicos en el síndrome de Sjögren primario (SSp). Se identificaron preguntas clínicas de investigación relevantes sobre el uso de agentes biológicos en el SSp. Las preguntas clínicas se reformularon en 4 preguntas PICO. Se diseñó una estrategia de búsqueda y se realizó una revisión de la evidencia científica de estudios publicados hasta mayo de 2017. Se revisó sistemáticamente la evidencia científica disponible. Se evaluó el nivel global de la evidencia científica utilizando los niveles de evidencia del SIGN. Tras ello, se formularon recomendaciones específicas. Se recomienda rituximab como el fármaco biológico de elección para las manifestaciones extraglandulares refractarias al tratamiento convencional. Se desaconseja el uso de agentes anti-TNF. La evidencia científica es escasa con belimumab y abatacept, por lo que deberían considerarse solamente en los casos resistentes a rituximab. El rituximab es el fármaco biológico de elección en las manifestaciones graves extraglandulares del SSp. Belimumab o abatacept podrían ser de utilidad en casos seleccionados. To formulate SER recommendations for the use of biological agents in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Relevant clinical research questions were identified on the use of biological agents in pSS. The clinical questions were reformulated into 4 PICO questions. A search strategy was designed and a review of the scientific evidence of studies published until May 2017 was carried out. The scientific evidence available was systematically reviewed. The overall level of scientific evidence was assessed using the SIGN evidence levels. After that, specific recommendations were made. Rituximab is recommended as the biological agent of choice for extraglandular manifestations refractory to conventional treatment. The use of anti-TNF agents is discouraged. The scientific evidence with belimumab and abatacept is scarce, so they should be considered only in cases refractory to rituximab. Abstract The microphysics of precipitation has to be parameterized in Earth System Models (ESM), Global Circulation/Climate Models (GCMs), Cloud Resolving Models (CRMs), Regional Climate Models (RCMs), and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models since the relevant physical processes operate at centimeter scale, thus well below the finest model grid size. While more than 20 bulk microphysics schemes have been described in the literature, they all have a number of empirical values and work under a set of reasonable assumptions that treat the problems in a simplified way. This paper discusses these choices in order to present a homogenous account of the physics within the parameterizations, and illustrates how observations can help improve our present understanding of precipitation physics. The Weather and Forecasting Research model (WRF), and the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) in the Community Earth System Model (CESM) are used as prototypes of full-confidence models. This contribution can also help frame and advance research into the human-induced, ongoing climate change as those parameterizations are instrumental for the appropriate ESM modeling of future climates. Blue-eye disease (BED) of swine is a viral disease endemic in Mexico. The etiological agent is a paramyxovirus classified as Porcine rubulavirus (PoRV-LPMV), which exhibits in its envelope the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) glycoprotein, the most immunogenic and a major target for vaccine development. We report in this study the obtaining of ectodomain of PoRV HN (eHN) through the Pichia pastoris expression system. The expression vector (pPICZαB-HN) was integrated by displacement into the yeast chromosome and resulted in a Mut + phenotype. Expressed eHN in the P. pastoris X33 strain was recovered from cell-free medium, featuring up to 67 nmol/min/mg after 6 days of expression. eHN was recognized by the serum of infected pigs with strains currently circulating in the Mexican Bajio region. eHN induces antibodies in mice after 28 days of immunization with specific recognition in ELISA test. These antibodies were able to inhibit >80% replication by viral neutralization assays in cell culture. These studies show the obtaining of a protein with similar characteristics to the native HN and which may be a candidate to propose a vaccine or to use the antigen in a serologic diagnostic test. Abstract: The presence of low concentrations of persistent pollutants in waters (μg/L or ng/L), also called micropollutants, brings as a consequence the need to apply advanced oxidation treatments for their removal. The successful application of solar-driven photo-Fenton to treat highly polluted wastewaters (g/L and mg/L of pollutants) has prompted its application to lowly polluted effluents. However, a decrease in contaminant concentration may involve an alteration in the intrinsic process phenomenon, which until now has only been widely studied at the milligram-per-litre level or higher with this process. The aim of this research was to study the combined influence of the operating variable (iron concentration) and the environmental variable (irradiance) and application on the photo-Fenton process at pH2.8 when removing micropollutants. For this purpose, experimentation was carried out at laboratory and pilot plant scales with a biocide mixture of acetamiprid (ACTM), thiabendazole (TBZ) and imazalil (IMZ) (100μg/L each) as the model pollutant. Results indicated that above 15WUV/m2 and a light path length of 5cm (the most commonly used path for this type of application) iron concentration limited the process and there was irradiance excess under these conditions. On the other hand, and given the circumstances of irradiance excess, a higher light path length (10cm) was assessed. Results showed that path lengths wider than 5cm are recommended since more wastewater volume could be treated with a higher process rate per surface unit. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objective: To describe the main demographic and clinical features of patients with spondyloarthropaties in Spain. Patients and methods: Review of randomized clinical charts of patients with spondyloarthropaties with at least one visit to the rheumatologist in the previous two years. Information was collected on demographic and clinical data (duration of illness, diagnostic category, disease activity, extra-articular manifestations, comorbidity and work disability). Results: 1168 patients were included in the study. Their median age was 49.2 years (39.7-60.5), 68.0% were males, and median time of disease was 105.1 months (48.4-192.5). The diagnoses and clinical data such as the BASDAI were reported only in 34.0% of the patients. The most widely used measure of metrology, the Schober test, was missing in 37.7% of the clinical charts. The patients included had the following diagnoses: ankylosing spondylitis (n=629, 55.2%), psoriatic arthritis (n=253, 22.2%), undifferentiated spondyloarthritis (n=184, 16.1%), arthritis associated to inflammatory bowel disease (n=50, 4.4%), and reactive arthritis (n=16, 1.4%). The most common extra-articular manifestations were psoriasis (20.8%), anterior uveitis (19.4%), and enthesitis (16.9%). Some kind of work disability was reported in 8.3% of the patients. Conclusions: Demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with spondyloarthropaties in Spain do not differ as a whole from other published studies, except for undifferentiated spondyloarthritis, which was more likely in our patients than in other studies. Abstract: The synthesis of silicalite-1 layers on pyrolyzed wood bodies with a desired shape was studied. The synthesis procedure is based in an “in situ” hydrothermal treatment of a precursor gel in which the support is immersed. Two different calcination methods were carried out, using a flow of air or N2 and air. Samples were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analyses and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, revealing the existence of a micro/mesoporous hierarchical silicalite-1 structure. Abstract: Many thermodynamic parameters and indices are currently being used as thunderstorm predictors because of their high correlations with the beginning and development of convection. Many of these indices have been developed for one specific area and their forecasting accuracy has generally been assessed in that zone and not in others. It is a highly intriguing question whether there are parameters or indices that may function adequately as thunderstorm predictors, as far as the Probability of Detection is concerned, irrespective of the latitude of the study zone. In order to approach this issue the present study focuses on data from 1692 sounding days in León (Spain), Zaragoza (Spain), Bordeaux (France) and Mendoza (Argentina). Specific discriminant models have already been developed for these areas. When comparing the results found by the different models constructed for each of the four study zones it may be noticed that there are no indices that function extremely well in all of the zones. Rather, a common ingredient pattern is observed for the beginning of convection): atmospheric instability and moist layers in the low atmosphere. It may also be concluded that sounding data alone are not enough to detect accurately the triggering mechanism, which is the third ingredient necessary for convection. The aim of this paper is to build a logistic equation integrating the four study zones. The stepwise method was employed with this purpose because it allows for the gradual inclusion of variables in the final equation according to their discriminating power. The results obtained suggest that Showalter Index and 850 hPa Dew Point Temperature are the variables that best characterize preconvective conditions irrespective of the geographic area considered. The values for POD (Probability of Detection) and FAR (False Alarm Ratio) are acceptable, but they are clearly lower than the ones obtained by each of the models in the study zone for which they were developed. Lupus nephritis is a relevant source of morbidity and mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematusus. The standard therapy of remission induction in severe lupus nephritis is based on the use of monthly intravenous cyclophosphamide. Recent data have established that the maintenance of remission in lupus nephritis can be achieved with azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil, with less adverse effects than quarterly intravenous cydophosphamide. In recent years, a number of controlled randomized clinical trials have been published, opening new therapeutic options in the induction of remission in lupus nephritis, such as less aggressive regimens of intravenous cydophosphamide or mycophenolate mofetil. Abstract: The newly synthesized copper coordination compound Casiopeína IIgly (Cas IIgly) is a promising alternative drug in the treatment of cancer, since it has shown cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in different tumour models. Given its enhanced effects after ascorbic acid-mediated copper reduction, Cas IIgly’s activity is thought to be related to oxidative damage. In the present work, oxidized Cas IIgly failed to induce cytosolic oxidative damage in HeLa cells (only 0.9% of the cell population), and in 2.3% of the treated cells when previously reduced, as evaluated through the oxidation of dihydrorhodamine 123 (DHR 123). However, it showed cytotoxicity, since HeLa cells treated with 10–80μg/mL Cas IIgly proliferated only at 30% of their normal rate, and at 15% when treated with reduced Cas IIgly. This cytotoxicity is strongly abolished in the presence of the hydroxyl scavenger dimethyl sulfoxide. The decrease, from 3994 to 530 nanograms of reduced glutathione (GSH) per million cells after treatment with 80μg/mL Casiopeína IIgly, indicates that this drug causes the expenditure of this naturally occurring antioxidant. These results altogether suggest that, albeit Cas IIgly induced cytotoxicity is not related to cytosolic DHR 123 oxidation, it may be related to oxidative damage. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The COVID-19 pandemic continues without specific treatment. In this study it is proposed compounds that can be developed as adjuvant / complementary drugs against COVID-19. Through a search for molecular docking, for the development of a new drug using pharmacological compounds targeting the b1 region in neuropilin-1 (NRP1), which is important for the interaction with the S1 region of the S-Protein of SARS-CoV-2, to slow down the infection process of this virus. A molecular docking was performed using almost 500,000 compounds targeted to interact in the region between amino acids (Thr316, Asp320, Ser346, Thr349, and Tyr353) in NRP1 to determine compounds able to hinder the interaction with the S1 region in the S-Protein. In this study, ten compounds are proposed as potential inhibitors between S1 region in the S-Protein of SARS-CoV-2 with the b1 region in NRP1, to develop a new adjuvant / complementary drug against COVID-19, and to hinder the interaction between SARS-CoV-2 and human cells, with a high probability to be safe in humans, validated by web servers for prediction of ADME and toxicity (PreADMET). The COVID-19 disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 has become a pandemic and there are no effective treatments that reduce the contagion. It is urgent to propose new treatment options, which are more effective in the interaction between viruses and cells. In this study was to develop a search for new pharmacological compounds against the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), to inhibit the interaction with SARS-CoV-2. Docking, virtual screening using almost 500,000 compounds directed to interact in the region between the residues (Gln24, Asp30, His34, Tyr41, Gln42, Met82, Lys353, and Arg357) in ACE2. The average of ΔG binding , the standard deviation value and the theoretical toxicity from compounds were analyzed. 20 best compounds directed to interact in ACE2 with a high probability to be safe in humans, validated by web servers of prediction of ADME and toxicity (ProTox-II and PreADMET), to difficult the interaction between ACE2 and region binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2. In this study, 20 compounds were determined by docking focused on the region of interaction between ACE2 and RBD of SARS-CoV-2 was carried out. Trichomonas vaginalis is the protozoan parasite responsible for the most prevalent, non-viral, sexually transmitted disease, which affects millions of people around the world. The main treatment against this disease is metronidazole and some other nitroimidazole derivatives. However, between five and 20% of clinical cases of trichomoniasis are caused by parasites resistant to these drugs. Here we present three compounds that were selected using an innovative strategy, to propose them as possible drugs to combat trichomoniasis, using the glycolytic enzyme triose phosphate isomerase (TvTIM) as the drug target. In the genome of Trichomonas vaginalis there are two genes that encode for two isoforms of TvTIM, known as TvTIM1 and TvTIM2, varying by four out of 254 aminoacid residues. In this study, we used high-throughput virtual screening to search molecules that bind specifically to TvTIM isoforms, in which 34 compounds were selected from a library of nearly 450,000 compounds. The effects of the 34 compounds on the conformation and enzymatic activity of both TvTIM isoforms and their human homolog (HsTIM) were evaluated. We found three compounds that bind specifically, modify the conformation and inhibit TvTIM2 only; although the sequence of both isoforms of TvTIM is almost identical. The selectivity of these compounds towards TvTIM2 is explained by the lower conformational stability of this isoform and that these interactions can inhibit the activity of this enzyme and have an effect against this parasite. Rheumatic diseases account for almost 30% of consultations attended in Spanish primary care centres. The main objective was to analyse the demand for rheumatology consultations from Primary Care and their resolution using the electronic consultation system. Retrospective descriptive study of electronic consultations from primary care centres in the health area to the Rheumatology service of a tertiary hospital, between July 2020 and May 2021. The last 500 consecutive consultations were collected. Mean age of patients was 59.5 years; 74.2% were women. Main reasons for consultation were osteoporosis and treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis under follow-up by the department. Mean response time was 2 days. Fifty-seven per cent of patients required outpatient appointments. Over 40% of queries were resolved thanks to the electronic consultation system in an average of 2 days, otherwise patients would have been referred to specialized care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Snowfall in elevated areas of the mid-latitudes has a strong impact on infrastructure, freshwater availability, and the climate system. The Cantabrian Mountains of the northwestern Iberian Peninsula are very vulnerable to climate change because of their moderate altitudes, which limits their snowfall. Monitoring snow events is essential for the evaluation of weather and climate prediction models. However, measurement networks are scarce in mountainous areas and have great uncertainties because of blizzards. In this study, a multiphysics ensemble of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was designed using three microphysics and two planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes to simulate nine snowfall events in the Cantabrian Mountains during autumn and winter 2021–2022. The WRF was validated using several snow characteristics, such as liquid water equivalent, snow cover, and snow depth. Liquid water equivalent was evaluated using snow-gauge networks and satellite products in an assessment of snow cover. In addition, a monitoring network of webcams and snow poles was implemented, improving the low density of snow observations in the mountains. The results showed good model performance for detection of snow cover and slight overestimation of liquid water equivalent and snow thickness, which may have been caused by under-catchment that is generally an effect of wind on the measurement systems and by snow compaction, respectively. Morrison microphysics and Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi-Niino (MYNN PBL) yielded better results for liquid water equivalent at higher altitudes and output greater snow cover. Southwestern France is one of the European regions with higher frequency of hail and substantial losses. The Association Nationale d'Etude et de Lutte contre les Fleáux Atmosphériques (ANELFA) maintains a hailpad network there in continuous operation, creating an extensive database for the study of hail. We aimed to create a new forecast tool to improve hailfall detection and determine its spatiotemporal distribution in the region. Using a database of 92 hail days between 2001 and 2010, we obtained vertical profiles of temperature, dew point temperature, and relative humidity from WRF model simulation. After validating these by comparison with radiosonde profiles from Bordeaux at 1200 UTC, 31 stability indexes were obtained for a point representative of the entire study area. These indexes were introduced in a binary logistic regression model, which selected the most accurate ones for detecting hail days in the region, namely, the Showalter index, dew point temperature at 850 hPa, and TQ index. A logistic equation to distinguish between hail and hail-free days was constructed by combining these indexes. Results show a probability of detection (POD) of 87%, false alarm ratio (FAR) of 16.7%, and a Heidke Skill Score (HSS) of 0.696. The logistic equation was then applied to the entire study zone, and the results were introduced in a cluster analysis. Four clusters of hail days were obtained according to the spatial patterns of atmospheric thermodynamic conditions and probability of hail. The average distribution of hail for each cluster shows a strong similarity with the distribution of impacted hailpads from the ANELFA network. The average synoptic environment, monthly distribution and hail characteristics at the surface were also analyzed for each cluster. Cluster 1 (August) was the least frequent, with small and weak hailfalls. Cluster 2 (June and July) and 3 (May and September) had the most intense hail events, while cluster 3 and 4 (May) had the most extensive areas affected. The new forecast tool shows satisfactory results and complements other studies in the same region, and it can be a useful tool for operational forecasters in predicting hail days and determining the spatial distribution of hailfalls. Hailstorms are meteorological phenomena of great interest to the scientific community, owing to their socioeconomic impact, which is mainly on agricultural production. With its global coverage and high spatial and temporal resolution, satellite remote sensing can contribute to monitoring of such events through the development of appropriate techniques. This paper presents an extensive validation in the south of France of a hail detection tool (HDT) developed for the Middle Ebro Valley (MEV). The HDT is based on consecutive application of two filters, a convection mask (CM) and hail mask (HM), using spectral channels of the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite. The south of France is an ideal area for studying hailstorms, because there is a robust database of hail falls recorded by an extensive network of hailpads managed by the Association Nationale d'Etude et de Lutte contre les Fleáux Atmosphériques (ANELFA). The results show noticeably poorer performance of the HDT in France relative to that in the MEV, with probability of detection (POD) 60.4% and false alarm rate (FAR) 26.6%. For this reason, a new tool to suit the characteristics of hailstorms in France has been developed. The France Hail Detection Tool (FHDT) was developed using logistic regression from channels of the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) sensor of the MSG. The FHDT was validated, resulting in POD 69.3% and FAR 15.4%, thus improving hail detection in the study area as compared with the previous tool. Pilot-scale bubbling fluidized bed gasification tests of alfalfa pellets were performed at two different operational periods ranged on the basis of the two given equivalence ratio (ER) (the ratio between actual air and the stoichiometric air) namely as 0.25 and 0.30. During the test, the solid feeding rate was kept constant at 4.7 kg/h while the air input was varied and thus the ER. Increasing air from 4.16 to 4.99 N m 3 /h contributed to the evolution pattern of several parameters such as the rise in gas lower heating value (LHV) and gas yield, the average maximum of which were 4.2 MJ/N m 3 and 1.5 N m 3 /kg respectively. Gas composition was mainly boosted by the concentration of CO, as the rest of the combustible components stayed rather unaffected due to the modified air flow rate. The steady state bed temperature agreed with the trend of air flow and ranged between 720 and 780 °C despite gasification start-up occurred at 800 °C. Corticosteroids are a mainstay in the therapy of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In recent years, a number of high-quality controlled clinical trials have shown their effect as a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) and a favourable safety profile in recent-onset RA. Despite this, they are more frequently used as bridge therapy while other DMARDs initiate their action than as true disease-modifying agents. Low-dose corticosteroid use during the first two years of disease slows radiologic damage and reduces the need of biologic therapy aimed at reaching a state of clinical remission in recent-onset RA. Abstract: A continuous process for biodiesel production has been simulated using Aspen HYSYS V7.0 software. As fresh feed, feedstocks with a mild acid content have been used. The process flowsheet follows a traditional alkaline transesterification scheme constituted by esterification, transesterification and purification stages. Kinetic models taking into account the concentration of the different species have been employed in order to simulate the behavior of the CSTR reactors and the product distribution within the process. The comparison between experimental data found in literature and the predicted normalized properties, has been discussed. Additionally, a comparison between different thermodynamic packages has been performed. NRTL activity model has been selected as the most reliable of them. The combination of these models allows the prediction of 13 out of 25 parameters included in standard EN-14214:2003, and confers simulators a great value as predictive as well as optimization tool. Abstract: Predicting the occurrence of hailstorms is one of the most complicated tasks in weather forecasting because of the small area of land that is usually affected, and because of the short time hail events last. Today there are a number of parameters available that may be used to characterize preconvective conditions and predict the beginning of convection. However, forecast models based on stability indices should be developed separately for each geographic area. The databases available were used in this study with two aims in mind: determining which meteorological variables or indices obtained from a radiosonde in the study zone are more relevant in characterizing preconvective conditions; and, secondly, setting up an objective short-term forecast model for storms on the basis of one or more meteorological parameters. The logistic regression was used to establish the dichotomy risk/no risk of storms. A function was developed combining seven meteorological variables. The results show that the forecast model has a Probability of Detection of 0.87 and a False Alarm Ratio of 0.18. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We report on direct solvent-free derivatization of pristine multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with aliphatic dithiols (1,4-butanedithiol, 1,6-hexanedithiol and 1,8-octanedithiol), by means of heating at 130–150 °C under reduced pressure. This method requires no additional chemical activation and about 2 h only for completion. Studies by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that dithiol-derivatized MWNTs have a high affinity to ZnCl2 in solution, which covers the nanotubes with a dense amorphous layer. According to PM3 semi-empirical calculations, employing a closed-cap zigzag (10,0) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) model incorporating a Stone-Wales defect, site-specificity of the addition depends on the mutual position of pentagons. If the nanotube contains pyracylene units or Stone-Wales defect, the addition takes place on their 6,6 or 7,7 bonds, respectively, whereas for isolated pentagons, preferential reaction sites are their C–C bonds. Ideal graphene sheet sidewalls with cylindrical curvature are relatively inert (although one cannot discard the possibility to activate the reaction by heating). Dithiol groups introduced in the way proposed can be used as chemical linkers for anchoring metal complexes and nanoparticles to carbon nanotubes, attaching SWNTs to gold tips for atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopy, and potentially for adsorption and concentration of trace metal ions. El diagnóstico y tratamiento de las enfermedades autoinmunes sistémicas (EAS) constituye un reto. Aunque infrecuentes, afectan a cientos de miles de pacientes en España. El médico de familia (MF) se enfrenta a síntomas o signos inespecíficos que hacen sospechar EAS al inicio del proceso, y tiene que decidir a quiénes debería derivar. Para facilitar su reconocimiento y mejorar su derivación, expertos de la Sociedad Española de Medicina de Familia y Comunitaria y de la Sociedad Española de Reumatología seleccionaron 26 síntomas/signos-guía y alteraciones analíticas. Se escogieron parejas de MF y reumatólogo para elaborar algoritmos diagnósticos y de derivación. Posteriormente se revisaron y adaptaron al formato de aplicación para móviles (app) descargable. El resultado es el presente documento de derivación de EAS para MF en formato de papel y app. Contiene algoritmos de fácil manejo utilizando datos de la anamnesis, exploración física y pruebas analíticas accesibles en atención primaria para orientar el diagnóstico y facilitar la derivación a reumatología o a otras especialidades. Management of systemic autoimmune diseases is challenging for physicians in their clinical practice. Although not common, they affect thousands of patients in Spain. The family doctor faces patients with symptoms and non-specific cutaneous, mucous, joint, vascular signs or abnormal laboratory findings at the start of the disease process and has to determine when to refer patients to the specialist. To aid in disease detection and better referral, the Spanish Society of Rheumatology and the Spanish Society of Family Medicine has created a group of experts who selected 26 symptoms, key signs and abnormal laboratory findings which were organized by organ and apparatus. Family doctors and rheumatologists with an interest in autoimmune systemic diseases were selected and formed mixed groups of two that then elaborated algorithms for diagnostic guidelines and referral. The algorithms were then reviewed, homogenized and adapted to the algorithm format and application for cell phone (apps) download. The result is the current Referral document of systemic autoimmune diseases for the family doctor in paper format and app (download). It contains easy-to-use algorithms using data from anamnesis, physical examination and laboratory results usually available to primary care, that help diagnose and refer patients to rheumatology or other specialties if needed. En la actualidad no existe una referencia que cuantifique la complejidad de los actos médicos de esta especialidad. Se elaboró una relación de los actos propios del reumatólogo y se estableció un sistema de clasificación jerárquica a partir de la construcción de un índice de complejidad, calculado mediante el tiempo de realización y el grado de dificultad de cada acto. Los resultados del método Delphi tendieron a una opinión grupal consensuada (media σ2 - σ1 = 0,75-1,43 = -0,68, media IQR2 - IQR1 = 0,8-1,9 = -1,1). El rango de valores del índice de complejidad osciló de 48 a 465 puntos. Entre las consultas, las que alcanzaron mayor gradación fueron la primera visita al paciente hospitalizado (366) y la visita a domicilio (369). Entre las técnicas diagnósticas, destacaron las biopsias. Las que puntuaron más alto fueron: biopsia ósea (465), de nervio sural (416) y sinovial (380). One of the missions of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology is to provide the necessary tools for excellence in health care. Currently, there is no reference point to quantify medical actions in this specialty, and this is imperative. A list of actions was drawn up and a hierarchical classification system was established by developing a complexity index, calculated based on the completion time and difficulty level of each action. The results of the Delphi method tended to the consensus opinion within a group (mean σ2 - σ1 = 0.75-1.43 = -0.68, mean IQR2 - IQR1 = 0.8-1.9 = -1.1). The values of the complexity index ranged between 48 and 465 points. Among consultation actions, those reaching the highest scores were the first inpatient visit (366) and visits to the patient's home (369). Among diagnostic techniques, biopsies were prominent, those with the highest score were: bone biopsy (465), sural nerve biopsy (416) and synovial biopsy (380). Ultrasound scan scored 204, capillaroscopy 113 and densitometry 112. Among therapeutic techniques, infiltration/ arthrocentesis/articular injection in children reached the highest difficulty (388). The score for ultrasound-guided articular injection was 163. The score for clinical report on disability was 323 and expert report 370. A nomenclature of 54 actions in Rheumatology was compiled. Climate classifications based on temperature and precipitation measurements are increasingly being used for environmental and climate change studies. Using three classification methods (Köppen, Extended Köppen, and Holdridge) and one observational dataset for present climate (CRU, Climate Research Unit), we show that GCMs have bridged the gap that led to the emergence of RCMs thirty years ago, as GCMs can now provide global climate classifications whose accuracy and precision are comparable to those of regional outputs of the RCMs. Projections of high-resolution GCMs for future climates under the assumptions of three Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP26, RCP45 and RCP85) can therefore be used as a primary source for climate change and global warming studies at high resolution. This paper provides comprehensive, model-derived climate classifications for the entire planet, using RCMs and two GCMs for present and future climate-change scenarios, and discusses how well the models actually represent the climates of the world when compared with reference, ground validation data. It turns out that both GCMs and RCMs appear still limited to provide practical estimates of the world climates even for present climate conditions. The modeling of precipitation remains the Achilles' heel of models and thus of multidimensional indices, which are very sensitive to this variable. The conclusion is that model outputs at regional scale need to be taken with extreme caution without venturing into informing policies presenting potentially large societal impacts. Highlights • Biodiesel oxidation stability can be improved with a bio-oil derived additive. • Performance and emissions of a diesel engine are not significantly modified by this additive. • Biodiesel, with and without additive, improves most of the emissions measured. Abstract The aim of this study is to test the behaviour of sunflower biodiesel in a diesel engine after being treated with a natural antioxidant additive produced from bio-oil extraction (final dosage of bio-oil compounds in doped biodiesel of 1.9 wt%). The influence of this renewable additive in both the engine performance and the produced emissions was evaluated. Five more fuels were used for the sake of comparison: petroleum diesel, neat sunflower biodiesel without additives, commercial biodiesel, commercial B10 blend and another B10 blend prepared from petro-diesel and doped sunflower biodiesel. Brake power was found to be similar for the six fuels, while the brake specific fuel consumption and the brake thermal efficiency were higher for biodiesel fuels. Only slight differences (<1%) were observed between the doped biodiesel and the neat one, showing that the bio-oil based additive did not negatively affect the general performance of the engine. Regarding gas emissions (analysed according to the European Stationary Cycle), weighted average emissions of NO x and CO 2 were higher for biodiesel fuels, while CO and opacity factor were lower in that case. Incorporating the bio-oil based additive reduced NO x emissions and smoke opacity by 3.0% and 4.4% compared with neat biodiesel, respectively, whilst CO and HC emissions increased by 0.7 and 14.3% respectively, values still remaining below those of diesel. Thermosensitive materials, such as PNIPAAm, are considered for the development of hydrogels for controlled release, especially for topical use. Bromelain is a set of proteases found in plants (Bromeliceae family) and it is known for having several medical uses, including healing of topical wounds. The combination of PNIPAAm hydrogels and bromelain could result in a potential formulation for topical injuries. In this work, different NIPAAm hydrogels were submitted to swelling tests for 24 h. The selected formulation presented a swelling ratio of 340%, and was used for bromelain loading, reaching up to 30% of protein loading. After loading, hydrogel disks were dried and immersed in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) for release study. Release studies pointed to an initial burst release, followed by a modified (slower) release, reaching its optimum enzymatic activity release rates at around 60 min in both temperatures (25 °C and 37 °C). Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed bromelain loading through hydrogen bonds, without interfering in intermolecular polymeric chains. Bromelain presence decreased mucoadhesion at 25 °C and increased at 37 °C; it also increases polymers crosslink, without interfering in elastic properties (drilling and resilience). Hydrogels (blank and loaded with bromelain) showed a typical behavior of crosslinked hydrogels at rheology tests, and bromelain increased storage modulus. Aircraft icing is one of the most dangerous weather phenomena in aviation security. Therefore, avoiding areas with high probability of icing episodes along arrival and departure routes to airports is strongly recommended. Although such icing is common, forecasting and observation are far from perfect. This paper presents an analysis of an aircraft icing and turbulence event including a commercial flight near the Guadarrama Mountains, during the aircraft approach to the airport. No reference to icing or turbulence was made in the pre-flight meteorological information provided to the pilot, highlighting the need for additional tools to predict such risks. For this reason, the icing episode is simulated by means of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and analyzed using images from the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite, with the aim of providing tools for the detection of icing and turbulence in the airport vicinity. The WRF simulation shows alternating updrafts and downdrafts (> 2 m s − 1 ) on the lee side of the mountain barrier. This is consonant with moderate to strong turbulence experienced by the aircraft on its approach path to the airport and suggests clear air turbulence above the mountain wave cloud top. At the aircraft icing altitude, supercooled liquid water associated with orographic clouds and mountain waves is simulated. Daytime and nighttime MSG images corroborated the simulated mountain waves and associated supercooled liquid water. The results encourage the use of mesoscale models and MSG nowcasting information to minimize aviation risks associated with such meteorological phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Precipitation is one of the most relevant fields in atmospheric modeling because of its environmental, social and economic implications. However, precipitation validation from weather model outputs presents substantial challenges, such as measurement uncertainties, use of gridded datasets vs. direct observations, and the selection of statistical goodness-of-fit measures. The main difficulty of working with precipitation is that it can be spatially irregular, especially in extreme events. High temporal aggregation smooths the field and reduces verification uncertainty. For this reason, validations are usually focused on a daily scale. However, many extreme events occur on shorter periods, for which a sub-daily precipitation assessment is required. In this paper, hourly precipitation verification of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is explored for 45 extreme precipitation events (EPEs) recorded in northeastern Spain. For this, stations with recorded EPEs were classified according to the hourly distribution of precipitation. WRF simulations were established considering three microphysics and two planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterizations. Finally, several statistical goodness-of-fit measures and spatial and temporal precipitation distributions were used for evaluating WRF performance. The results showed that microphysics were more important than PBL parameterizations. Goddard and Thompson together with Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi and Nino PBL gave better results for most of the analyzed characteristics. The dynamic regulation of NF-κB activity in the uterus maintains a favorable environment of cytokines necessary to prepare for pregnancy throughout the estrous cycle. Recently, the mechanisms that directly regulate the NF-κB transcriptional activity in different tissues are of growing interest. IκBNS and BCL-3 are negative nuclear regulators of NF-κB activity that regulate IL-6 and TNF-α transcription, respectively. Both cytokines have been described as important factors in the remodeling of uterus for blastocyst implantation. In this work we analyzed in ICR mice the mRNA expression and protein production profile of IL-6, TNF-α, and their correspondent negative transcription regulators IκBNS or BCL-3 using real-time PCR, western blot and immunochemistry. We found that the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 was oscillatory along the estrous cycle, and its low expression coincided with the presence of BCL-3 and IκBNS, and vice versa, when the presence of the regulators was subtle, the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 was exacerbated. When we compared the production of TNF-α and IL-6 in the different estrous stages relating with diestrus we found that at estrus there is an important increase of the cytokines ( p < 0.05) decreasing at metestrus to reach the basal expression at diestrus. In the immunochemistry analysis we found that at diestrus BCL-3 is distributed all over the tissue with a barely detected TNF-α, but on the contrary, at estrus the expression of BCL-3 is not detected with TNF-α clearly observable along the tissue; the same phenomenon occur in the analysis of IκBNS and IL-6. With that evidence we suggest that the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 might be regulated through NF-κB nuclear regulators BCL-3 and IκBNS in the uterus of mice as has been demonstrated in other systems. The Iberian Peninsula (IP), located in a transition area between temperate and subtropical latitudes, has marked temporal and spatial variability of precipitation between its various climatic zones. Therefore, the peninsula is particularly sensitive to climate change owing to frequent periods of precipitation deficit together with societal dependence on water. In this study, we address meteorological droughts of the peninsula between 1901 and 2010, using the Global Precipitation Climatology Center database. First, we carried out a statistical classification of the peninsula according to annual precipitation cycle. The spatiotemporal variability of droughts was evaluated using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) by determining the evolution of areas affected by severe and extreme drought. Subsequently, we calculated the overall trend of precipitation and anomalies to investigate whether an observed drought increase is attributable to a decrease of precipitation or an increase of precipitation extremes. Finally, we examined periodicities of precipitation anomalies via wavelet analysis, relating these to large-scale modes such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The results show an increase in the area affected by severe and extreme drought, particularly on Atlantic-facing slopes. The mainland areas have longer and more intense periods of drought, with an average SPI of − 0.52 and 4-month duration. Over the 110 years analyzed, we observed weak trends of annual precipitation in the extreme northwest and southern IP. However, in the last decades of the series, long periods of strong negative anomalies are seen, interspersed with years of strong positive anomalies, suggesting an increase in precipitation pattern extremes. Finally, the relationship between the NAO index and precipitation anomalies on the Atlantic seaboard is highlighted. Thus, in both series we found a 5–6-year periodicity in their first years, with a diminishing cycle period reaching a periodicity of 2–3 years in the final years. Precipitation in southwestern France was analyzed. Monthly rainfall data from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) were used to obtain three clusters of average precipitation from May through September for the period 1901–2010. We attempt to understand the role of hailfalls in total precipitation using three different variables related to hail, the number of hail days, hail frequency, and intensity. We examine trends via the Mann–Kendall test and periodicities by wavelet analysis. The results show cluster classification of precipitation to be somewhat consistent with hailpad networks in the study area. In the Pyrenees, there was a non-significant negative trend of precipitation and a substantial increase of hail days and intensity of hail, which were close to the limit of significance. Finally, a wavelet coherence analysis shows a strong influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in the Atlantic region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Biodiesel density is a key parameter in biodiesel simulations and process development. In this work we selected, evaluated and improved two density models; one theoretical (Rackett–Soave) and one empirical (Lapuerta’s method) for methanol based biodiesels (FAME) and ethanol based biodiesel (FAEE). For this purpose, biodiesel was produced from vegetable oils (sunflower, rapeseed, soybean, olive, safflower and two other commercial mixtures of vegetable oils) and animal fats (edible and crude pork fat and beef tallow) using both methanol and ethanol for the transesterification reactions, and blended to get 21 FAME and 21 FAEE, reporting their density and detailed composition. Bibliographic data have also been used. The Rackett–Soave method has been improved by the use of a new acentric factor correlation, whereas the parameters of the empirical one are improved by considering a bigger density data bank. Results show that the evaluated models could be used to estimate the biodiesel density with a good grade of accuracy but the performed modifications improve the accuracy of the models: ARD (%) for FAME; 0.33, and FAEE; 0.26, both calculated with the modification of Rackett–Soave method and ARD (%) for FAME; 0.40 calculated with the modification of Lapuerta’s method. Abstract: For relative quantification of gene expression the mRNA levels of target genes must be normalized. The most common normalization strategy is the utilization of internal reference genes. However, the stability of reference genes must be validated for the conditions of the study. The aim of the present work is to select the best reference genes in the bivalve mollusc Pecten maximus during the reproductive cycle from a set of seven candidates: actin (act), 18S ribosomal RNA (18S), cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1), eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1 alpha (ef1a), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gapdh), NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) 1 alpha subcomplex subunit 7 (ndufa7), and 40S ribosomal protein SA (rpsa). In order to have samples at different stages of the reproductive cycle three specimens were sampled at approximately monthly intervals during a period of 7months. Three different statistical models (geNorm, NormFinder and BestKeeper) have been used to analyze the results obtained by reverse transcription quantitative real time PCR (RT-qPCR). The most suitable reference genes were specific to each tissue. In P. maximus ovary ndufa7, rpsa and ef1a were the most stable genes. Abstract: In order to identify hail into thunderstorms identified with radar data, different kinds of techniques are use based. This paper will evaluate some of these methodologies for the case of the Ebro valley (NE Spain), in order to obtain the best method to identify hail at surface. To achieve this end, an analysis of the 2004 and 2005 hail seasons has been undertaken using C-band radar, MM5 meteorological model outputs and ground observations provided by two hailpad networks. These data were integrated, identifying, characterizing and tracking the convective cells, and obtaining for each one different hail probability equations by means of various radar techniques. Kinetic energy flux was found to be the best parameter for distinguishing between hail and no-hail precipitation, although there was found to exist no significant difference between the various methods used. Moreover, the high correlations between radar parameters obtained by means of cell analyses led us to reduce the initial number of variables in new radar parameters. These new variables are defined and provide new improved models of the intensity of the storm. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objective: Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) is an important mechanism in the clinical activity of rituximab for treatment of B-cell malignancies. Natural killer (NK) cells, through the activating receptor FcγRIIIa (CD16), play a major role in rituximab-mediated ADCC. We have studied the in vitro effect of NK stimulators, such as interleukin-15 (IL-15) and CpG oligodeoxynucleotides A-Class (CpG ODN A), in the enhancement of rituximab-mediated ADCC against B-cell lymphoma. Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), purified NK cells, or NK-depleted PBMC from healthy donors, were activated with IL-15 or CpG ODN A, and cocultured with B-lymphoma cells in the presence of rituximab to evaluate the enhancement of the cytotoxicity. Results: The rituximab-mediated ADCC of IL-15–activated PBMC was twofold compared to unstimulated PBMC (73% ± 7% vs 37% ± 5% respectively, p < 0.001). Similarly, rituximab-mediated ADCC was enhanced when PBMC were activated with CpG ODN A as compared to CpG ODN control (61% ± 11% vs 36% ± 8%, respectively, p = 0.02). Nevertheless, the ADCC of purified NK cells was increased only with IL-15. NK-depleted PBMC activated with either IL-15 or CpG ODN A showed no ADCC, suggesting that NK are the major effector cells. Furthermore, IL-15 or CpG ODN A–activated PBMC, but not activated purified NK cells, secreted large amounts of interferon-γ in the presence of rituximab-coated lymphoma cells. Conclusions: IL-15 and CpG ODN A enhance rituximab-mediated ADCC against B-cell lymphoma. Under these conditions, NK cells seem to be the main effector cells mediating ADCC. These findings suggest that these agents could be used as adjuvants in combination with rituximab for patients with B-cell lymphoma. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objective: The topic of this research was to determine whether out-of-hospital emergency teams could make use of previously prepared saline solutions (SS). The objective was to discover the physical, chemical and sterility characteristics of previously prepared saline infusions stored in ambulances and ascertain how long they remained in optimum condition. Method: Randomised clinical trial, triple blind, where study units consisted of saline solutions prepared with an infusion system and a three-way valve. The duration of the study was 12 months. Six intervention groups were designed on the basis of time of exposure and location. Samples consisted of 672 units. Twelve microbiological cultures were made and the pH, density, viscosity and CINa concentration were determined. We compared hypotheses with four models of linear regression for the variables and a model of logistic regression for the variables. A value of P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: We obtained results from 669 saline solutions (98.82%). Neither multivariant analysis nor ANOVA tests showed any significant association for a power greater than 99% with regard to the physical–chemical characteristics. The model of logistic regression also did not find any significant association for sterility. Colonisation was present in 1.7% of the 8,028 cultures made and more than 5 CFU per millilitre was found in only two cases. Conclusion: There is no evidence to suggest that recently prepared saline infusion solutions are any different from a physical–chemical and sterility point of view than those exposed for 24, 48, or 72 h. Hail is an important economic problem in several countries, and there would be a need for climatological studies not limited to general data such as space and time frequencies of ordinary hailfalls. A large network of hailpad stations, which operated continuously in southwestern France since 1988, gives the first opportunity to compute return periods of very severe point hailfalls characterized either by the total kinetic energy of hailstones or by the diameter of the largest hailstones. The Gumbel distribution has been used to represent the probability density function of the maximum annual value of these two parameters. Preliminary results indicate that the area located just north of the central Pyrenees is three times more exposed to damaging hailfalls than the Atlantic border. The results show that the computation of an areal return period depends upon the hailpad network density, which makes data normalization necessary for inter-network comparisons. This study also offers the possibility of determining return periods of severe hailfalls at a point. As an example, a provisional estimation indicates that a hailfall with hailstones of 3–4 cm diameter occurs every 22 years at any point in the hail core region north of the Pyrenees. The hope is that this study may be progressively expanded to other European hailed regions in which similar hailpad networks are in operation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A gridded precipitation dataset derived from the high-density rain gauge network of the Ebro River Basin Authority is used to evaluate the performance of Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) level-3 estimates. Although aggregated values compare well, several differences are found between climate regions. The research investigates the role of orography and gauge density on IMERG performance. There are important discrepancies over un-instrumented areas in the Pyrenees (R2 = 0.31) but the correlation dramatically increases (R2 > 0.71) when at least one rain gauge is available for calibration, even in complex, high-altitude terrain (>1500 m). IMERG overestimates precipitation at both lower altitudes (<500 m), especially in summer and autumn because of convective activity, and mid-altitudes (600–1200 m) in the northwestern study area, where weather is dominated by the advection of wet maritime air masses. The main conclusion is that IMERG performance strongly depends on altitude and the precipitation regime. IMERG is nonetheless a suitable alternative to gridded gauge-derived only products for hydrologic operations, especially in areas with a sparse rain gauge network. • The performance of IMERG precipitation product in complex terrain areas is evaluated. • Seasonal variability and altitude play a key role in product performance. • IMERG compares well at aggregated level but underestimates precipitation maxima. • Best scores are at mid-elevations and the worst are at low and high elevations. • IMERG is useful in areas where rain gauges are sparse, even in complex regions. Anti-tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF) therapy has been associated with reactivation of hepatitis B virus infection. Case reports have suggested the concomitant need of lamivudine treatment in patients with HBV infection treated with anti-TNFa agents. We describe a case of ankylosing spondylitis with positive HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) treated with infliximab and lamivudine. Clinical response was excellent but when lamivudine therapy was stopped, reactivation of replication viral occurred. After the reintroduction of lamivudine, viral replication was controlled and liver function tests were normalized. Preventive long-term lamivudine therapy is mandatory when anti-TNFa therapy is maintained in parents with chronic HBV infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regional Climate Models (RCMs) emerged 30 years ago as a transient tool to provide detailed estimates of meteorological parameters (temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind, and others) for regional applications. Their dynamic downscaling approach was intended to fill the gap between the global but coarse estimates of Global Climate/Circulation Models (GCMs), which typically had a 2.5° resolution, and practical requirements such as estimating precipitation for hydrologic operations in small basins under conditions of increased greenhouse gas emissions. Over the three decades, RCMs provided data to inform policies and helped to increase knowledge of the present climate and the impacts of global warming at regional level. This paper describes the major achievements of RCMs, critically reviewing the main issues and limitations that have been featured in the literature. It puts forward a controversial claim aimed at starting a debate in the climate community, namely, that the cycle of RCM research has reached an end for informing policies. This is because these models have recently been superseded for that purpose by high-resolution GCMs and Earth System Models (ESM). • The paper reviews the main issues and achievements of RCMs since its inception 30 years ago. • Current high-resolution GCMs may supersede RCMs for informing policies. • RCMs may still be useful for benchmarking new parameterizations and rapid prototyping. • Semichemical pulping straw black liquor depolymerization for antioxidant production. • Direct extraction of liquid produces the antioxidant with highest effect on biodiesel. • Antioxidant potential increases with temperature at 225–300 °C. • Biodiesel oxidation stability increased as much as 250% by adding 1 wt% additive. • Antioxidant effect is not explained by the volatile compounds identified. Black liquor obtained from semichemical pulping of barley straw was depolymerized in a stirred autoclave reactor, at temperature in the range of 250–300 °C while varying the amount of catalyst (zeolite Y). Three fractions were obtained from the depolymerized liquor: a fraction directly extracted from the liquid with isopropyl acetate (Lα), a second one which contains the heaviest compounds precipitated from the liquid at pH 1 (Lβ) and a third one obtained by extraction of the acidified liquid (Lγ). The three fractions were tested as antioxidant additives for biodiesel, blending them individually at a dosage of 1 wt%. The antioxidant activity was Lα > Lγ > Lβ. The Lα fraction showed the highest antioxidant activity, increasing the oxidation stability time over neat biodiesel from 150 to 250%. The phenolic volatile content of the fractions (measured by GC/MS) decreased in the same rank (Lα > Lγ > Lβ), so there doesn't seem to be correlation between the volatile content and the increase of antioxidant activity. Depolymerizarion temperature was the most influential parameter, showing a clear positive effect on the antioxidant activity for the three fractions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
