29. Changes of human menisci in osteoarthritic knee joints.

Abstract

Summary: Objective: To investigate the changes of knee menisci in osteoarthritis (OA) in human. Methods: OA and control menisci were obtained from 42 end-stage OA knees with medial involvement and 28 non-arthritic knees of age-matched donors, respectively. The change of menisci in OA was evaluated by histology, and gene expression of major matrix components and anabolic factors was analyzed in the anterior horn segments by quantitative PCR (qPCR). In those regions of menisci, the rate of collagen neo-synthesis was evaluated by [3H]proline incorporation, and the change of matrix was investigated by ultrastructural observation and biomechanical measurement. Results: In OA menisci, the change in histology was rather moderate in the anterior horn segments. However, despite the modest change in histology, the expression of type I, II, III procollagens was dramatically increased in those regions. The expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) was markedly enhanced in OA menisci, which was considered to be responsible, at least partly, for the increase in procollagen gene expression. Interestingly, in spite of marked increase in procollagen gene expression, incorporation of [3H]proline increased only modestly in OA menisci, and impaired collagen synthesis was suggested. This finding was consistent with the results of ultrastructural observation and biomechanical measurement, which indicated that the change of meniscal matrix was modest in the macroscopically preserved areas of OA menisci. Conclusion: Although the expression of major matrix components was markedly enhanced, matrix synthesis was enhanced only modestly, and the changes of matrix in human OA menisci were rather modest in the non-degenerated areas. 30. Clinical analysis of gastroesophageal reflux after PEG.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to predict whether or not gastroesophageal reflux (GER), such as aspiration or vomiting, will occur after PEG. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that would support the prediction of aspiration after PEG. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Patients who underwent PEG from February 1998 to June 2005 in our hospital. PATIENTS: The study included 178 patients. INTERVENTIONS: Endoscopic observation was carried out during PEG tube placement and at PEG tube replacement to determine the presence of hiatus hernia and/or reflux esophagitis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Gastric emptying and GER index (GERI) were measured by using a radioisotope technique. RESULTS: The patients were divided into 2 groups: the non-GER (NGER) group (n = 108), who had no symptoms of GER, and the GER group (n = 70), who showed these symptoms. No significant differences were observed between the groups in age, sex, morbidity, the presence of reflux esophagitis at PEG tube placement, gastric emptying, or serum albumin levels. The presence of a hiatus hernia (P = .028) and reflux esophagitis grading Los Angeles classification C or D (P = .008) were significantly more frequent in the GER group compared with the NGER group. The GERI was also significantly higher in the GER group than in the NGER group (P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of hiatus hernia, severe reflux esophagitis, and a high GERI might be predictive factors of aspiration or vomiting after PEG tube placement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: Second-order optical non-linearities for the transparent Ba2TiGe2O8 (BTG) crystallized glasses with the composition of 40BaO·20TiO2·40GeO2 (BTG40), 33.3BaO·16.7TiO2·50GeO2 (BTG50) and 30BaO·15TiO2·55GeO2 (BTG55) have been examined. A very large d33 value for a transparent BTG crystallized glass in BTG55 was achieved, i.e., d33=22±3 pm/V, being comparable to that of LiNbO3 single crystal. The d33 for BTG50 and BTG40 were measured to be 12±3pm/V and 7±2pm/V, respectively. This result indicates that d33 decreases with GeO2 concentration, when approaching the glass composition of the stoichiometric BTG crystal. For a larger d33 value in BTG crystallized glasses, it is considered that the high homogeneity of the oriented surface Ba2TiGe2O8 crystalline layer on the crystallized BTG55 glass is accomplished by a suitable amount of benitoite phase of BaTiGe3O9, which acts a nucleation site for the BTG crystal. Abstract

Here we review a role of a basal ganglia–brainstem (BG–BS) system throughout the mesopontine tegmentum in the control of various types of behavioral expression. First the basal ganglia–brainstem system may contribute to an automatic control of movements, such as rhythmic limb movements and adjustment of postural muscle tone during locomotion, which occurs in conjunction with voluntary control processes. Second, the basal ganglia–brainstem system can be involved in the regulation of awake–sleep states. We further propose the possibility that the basal ganglia–brainstem system is responsible for the integration of volitionally-guided and emotionally-triggered expression of motor behaviors. It can be proposed that dysfunction of the basal ganglia–brainstem system together with that of cortico-basal ganglia loop underlies the pathogenesis of behavioral disturbances expressed in basal ganglia dysfunction. Abstract

The present study was to determine how afferents from the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) of the basal ganglia to the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPN) in the brainstem could contribute to the control of behavioral states. We used anesthetized and acutely decerebrated cats (n=22). Repetitive electrical stimulation (10–100 Hz, 20–50 μA, for 4–20 s) to the ventrolateral part of the PPN produced rapid eye movement (REM) associated with a suppression of postural muscle tone (REM with atonia). Although repetitive electrical stimuli (10–200 Hz, 10–60 μA, for 5–20 s) delivered to the dorsolateral part of the SNr did not evoke eye movements or muscular tonus in baseline conditions, it altered the PPN-induced REM with atonia. The following three types of effects were induced: (1) attenuation of the REM with atonia; (2) attenuation of muscular atonia without changes in REM (REM without atonia); and (3) attenuation of only REM. The optimal stimulus sites for these effects were intermingled within the lateral part of the SNr. The PPN-induced REM with atonia was abolished by an injection into the PPN of muscimol (1–15 mM, 0.1–0.25 μl), a GABAA receptor agonist, but not altered by an injection of baclofen (1–10 mM, 0.1–0.25 μl), a GABAB receptor agonist. Moreover, an injection of bicuculline (1–15 mM, 0.1–0.25 μl), a GABAA receptor antagonist, into the PPN, resulted in REM with atonia. On the other hand, an injection of muscimol into the dorsolateral part of the SNr (1–15 mM, 0.1–0.25 μl) induced REM with atonia, which was in turn eliminated by a further injection of muscimol into the PPN (5–10 mM, 0.2–0.25 μl).These results suggest that a GABAergic projection from the SNr to the PPN could be involved in the control of REM with atonia, signs which indicate REM sleep. An excessive GABAergic output from the basal ganglia to the PPN in parkinsonian patients may induce sleep disturbances, including a reduction of REM sleep periods and REM sleep behavioral disorders (REM without atonia). 34. Comparison among the formation processes of extended defects in Si under irradiation with low-energy H+, He+ ions and high-energy electrons

Abstract

Formation processes and characteristics of platelet-like extended defects in FZ Si under the irradiation with low-energy H+ ions are examined, and the results are compared with those from He+ ion and high-energy electron irradiation. Silicon discs with (0 1 1) surfaces are irradiated by 5 keV H+, 10 keV He+ ions between 570 and 870 K, and by 1000 keV electrons between 470 and 670 K. It is considered from the temperature dependence of the characteristics of extended defects induced by H+ ion irradiation, that the interaction between self-interstitial atoms and hydrogen becomes weak above 770 K. The formation of {1 1 3} interstitial-type defects is enhanced by hydrogen and helium, and the degree is stronger for hydrogen. It is concluded from the difference between aspect ratios of {1 1 3} defects induced by the irradiation with both kinds of ions, that the mechanism for the enhancement by hydrogen is different from that by helium. Abstract

We fabricated and tested a high-temperature superconducting sigma–delta modulator using interface-engineered Josephson junctions. Proper dc-characteristics were obtained with a sampling frequency of 100 GHz at 20 K. To achieve high-speed sampling, Josephson junctions with a higher critical-current normal-resistance product were used. Circuit simulations with thermal noise were performed for the analysis of switching characteristics and SFQ dynamics. Further numerical analysis was made for the estimation of signal to noise ratio. Resultant bit accuracy was found to be 10.4 for 122 MHz input signal band. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Urban particulate matter (SRM 1648), Buffalo River sediment (SRM 2704) and pine needle (SRM 1575) standard reference materials prepared by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, USA) were analyzed by three multi-element analysis methods, i.e., particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES); values determined by those analysis methods were compared with certified and/or non-certified values of NIST samples. Values determined by PIXE were 70–120% relative to certified and/or non-certified values of NIST samples except for Co in the urban particulate matter, for V and Co in Buffalo River sediment and for Ni and Br in the pine needles samples. In particular, Al, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn and Pb were 85–110% in all samples. On the other hand, Na and Fe values determined by ICP-MS were very much different from the certified values in all samples, but the other elements were 70–120%. As for ICP-AES, all elements except for Na were 80–100% in all samples. Comparing the values determined by PIXE and those determined by ICP-MS and/or ICP-AES, there was a slight difference between the samples, but the range was 75–120% except for Na, V, Fe and Co determined by ICP-MS and Na determined by ICP-AES, which was generally consistent with PIXE.
