Food integrity is a major global public issue. China's food industry has demonstrated a sustained growth trend since the 1980s; however, the years between 1980 and 2012 witnessed a worrisome food integrity situation. Thankfully, in recent years, the situation is improving after the Chinese government's implementation of food safety regulations. In order to understand the current status of food integrity in China, this study analyzes the national food spot check data in 2016. The data covers almost all kinds of food in the market, and it reveals that overuse of food additives, microbial contamination and subpar food quality indicators are the top three factors limiting food integrity. Additionally, the paper discusses other challenges that affect food integrity in China, and we make suggestions for improving food integrity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The pathophysiological mechanism of cognitive impairments of bipolar disorder (BD) has not yet been completely revealed. It is well known that Vitamin D and physical activity (PA) are associated with BD. However, specific links between Vitamin D and cognitive deficits in BD are still unclear.Method: The serum levels of vitamin D were measured. The cognitive performances of 102 first-diagnosed and drug-naïve BD patients were evaluated for analysis. The repeatable battery for the assessment of neuropsychological status (RBANS) and the Stroop Color-Word test was used in this study. PA was collected by international physical activity questionnaire.Result: Patients with BD had high levels of serum vitamin D. Furthermore, immediate and delayed memory was negatively associated with vitamin D levels in patients' group. The serum levels of vitamin D in patients with low PA were positively associated with memory. However, increased PA attenuated the protective effect of vitamin D on executive cognition.Conclusion: It is concluded that the increased levels of vitamin D were observed in the serum of patients with BD. Thus, it is found that more PA is less beneficial to cognition of patients with BD than longer resting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Cognitive impairment and abnormal glycolipid metabolism are common clinical features of bipolar disorder (BD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between conventional glycolipid metabolism indicators and cognitive impairment in patients with BD.Methods: A total of 132 drug-naïve patients with BD and 129 healthy controls (HC) were recruited in the study. Five serum glycolipid metabolism indicators were measured and cognitive function was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and the Stroop Color-Word Test (Stroop test) for each participant.Results: The scores of immediate memory, attention, language and delayed memory in BD group were significantly lower than those in HC group (P < 0.05). The triglyceride (TG) level in BD group was higher than that in HC group (P = 0.011), and the total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) levels were lower than those in HC group (P = 0.026; P = 0.001). Regression analysis showed that TG level was significantly correlated with RBANS total score (β = 0.245, P = 0.008), attention (β = 0.289, P = 0.03) and delayed memory (β = 0.221, P = 0.023). Fasting blood glucose (FBG) level was significantly correlated with language subscale score (β = -0.187, P = 0.046) in BD.Limitations: Cross-sectional design and limited control variables.Conclusions: Elevated FBG and TG levels may be associated with cognitive dysfunction in BD patients. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the role of Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in clinical and cognitive outcomes in medication-naïve patients with Bipolar type II disorder (BD II) and Major depressive disorder (MDD).Methods: 45 outpatients with BD II, 40 outpatients with MDD and 40 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited, and sociodemographic and clinical data were collected. Their BDNF serum levels were measured and analyzed with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS).Results: BDNF levels were significantly lower in BD II patients than in MDD patients and HCs (p = 0.001). BD II and MDD patients had similar cognitive performance deficits shown on Attention (p = 0.001), Delayed memory (p = 0.001), and RBANS total score (p = 0.001). BDNF levels were positively associated with Visuospatial / constructional and Stroop color-word in BD II group, and with language in MDD group. The area under the curve (AUC) of the ROC analysis in BD II vs. MDD was 0.664, therefore, BDNF levels could not distinguish BD II from MDD.Conclusion: Our study showed the decreased serum BDNF in MDD and BD II patients, suggesting BDNF may be involved in the pathophysiology of MDD and BD II. BDNF and cognitive deficits are both of low efficiency in distinguishing BD II from MDD. Decrease of BDNF may potentially indicate cognitive dysfunction in BD II and MDD patients with a current depressive episode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
