Although multiple leading papers in the behavioral immune system literature have proposed that food deprivation affects responses to pathogen cues, evidence supporting this proposition is scarce. Here, we report results from what we believe to be the most comprehensive test of the effects of hunger on responses to pathogen cues to date. Participants (N = 40) recruited from a Dutch university attended two experimental sessions, each following a 15-hour fast. One of the two sessions was conducted immediately after eating a standardized meal, and the other was conducted before eating that same standardized meal. In each session, participants rated 40 different images (i.e., images depicting food-related pathogen cues, food-unrelated pathogen cues, violence, positive stimuli, and neutral stimuli) on valence and arousal while their heart rate and skin conductance responses were recorded. They also indicated their willingness to eat 16 novel foods. Results did not reveal an effect of nutritional state on explicit ratings of and physiological reactions to food-related or food-unrelated pathogen cues. However, participants reported a greater willingness to eat novel foods when hungry than when sated. These results raise doubt regarding proposals that short-term changes in nutritional state influence responses to pathogen cues, but they suggest that these same changes increase willingness to eat novel foods. AGILE is a space mission launched in 2007 to study X-ray and gamma-ray phenomena through data acquired by different instruments on board the satellite. In the multi-messenger era, the fast detection of transient sources is one of the main goals of space and ground-based gamma-ray observatories. When an observatory detects a transient event, it usually sends science alerts to other facilities through networks such as the General Coordinates Network (GCN), enabling follow-up observations. To achieve this task, real-time analysis (RTA) pipelines are required. This manuscript presents the RTA system developed for the AGILE space mission to detect transient sources on timescales from seconds to one hour. Two types of pipelines are presented. One pipeline executes automated analyses as soon as data are available, sharing the detection of sources with the community; more than 90 automated notices have been sent to the GCN since May 2019. The other pipeline reacts to external science alerts from neutrinos, gravitational waves (GW), etc., to search for electromagnetic counterparts in the AGILE data. The AGILE Team can visualize the results of these analyses using a web platform. The pipelines hereby presented can be a starting point for the development of RTA systems of the next generation of space-based gamma-ray observatories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This clinical report describes an adult patient referred for orthodontic treatment with mini-implants as anchorage to correct the root angulation of maxillary lateral incisors. The purpose of this report was to demonstrate the versatility of mini-implants placed in a vertical direction in esthetic areas. During orthodontic treatment, some aspects must be observed to preserve the interim restoration against the occlusal loads to avoid screw fracture. A fixed appliance was placed to correct the position of the maxillary anterior teeth and to complete the treatment. Acceptable esthetics and function were achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The objectives of this study were to evaluate, through panoramic radiographs, the mesiodistal axial inclinations of the maxillary anterior teeth at the beginning and end of nonextraction orthodontic treatment, and to compare the results with the mesiodistal axial inclinations of a control sample with normal (acceptable) occlusions. Methods: The experimental sample consisted of 40 white patients (20 male, 20 female; mean age, 14 years) with Class I maloccusions who were treated orthodontically with a standard edgewise (not preadjusted) technique without extractions. The mean treatment period was 1.6 years. The control sample comprised 42 white subjects (14 male, 28 female; age range, 12-17 years) with untreated normal (acceptable) occlusions. Panoramic radiographs were taken of the patients at the beginning (T1) and end (T2) of treatment. The mean values of the mesiodistal axial inclination at T1 were compared with the mean values at T2, and both were compared with the mesiodistal axial inclinations of the control sample. Results: The mesiodistal axial inclinations of the maxillary anterior teeth of the experimental group at T1 were different from those of the control group for 50% of the evaluated teeth. In contrast, the inclinations at T2 were consistent with the normal anatomical configuration of the controls. Conclusions: The panoramic radiograph is an effective tool for evaluating the mesiodistal axial inclinations of maxillary anterior teeth. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract Background Arterial vascular anomalies in patients undergoing kidney transplantation (KT) are correlated with a higher incidence of early surgical complications, potentially causing graft loss. Arterial reconstruction allows patients to overcome these surgical challenges, thus minimizing the risk of poor outcomes. The aim of the present study is to retrospectively investigate the safety and effectiveness of the multiple arterial reconstruction technique with a Teflon patch in case of an unavailable aortic patch: to do so, surgical complications, graft function, and patient survival were evaluated. Methods During the period January 2009 to August 2016, 202 adult deceased-donor KTs were performed at our center. Group A (n = 27; reconstruction of multiple arteries) and Group B (n = 175; control group) were compared. Results No differences were observed between the 2 groups in terms of early postoperative course, with no vascular complication observed in Group A. No vascular patch infections were reported, nor longer cold ischemia time rates. Similarly, long-term survival rates were similar between the 2 groups. Conclusions The Teflon-patch arterial reconstruction technique appears to be safe and effective, with an acceptable balance of benefits and potential risks of using a prosthetic material.
