• Solar energy is an efficient renovation mean for Soviet-era multi apartment buildings. • Solar collectors can cover up to 60% of hot water preparation demand. • In addition, photovoltaic plant can cover up to 50% of the annual electricity demand. The paper analyses the energy and technical possibilities of installing systems that use renewable energy sources (solar energy) to renovate soviet type apartment buildings. The aim of the analysis is to study the possibilities of using solar energy systems to renovate apartment buildings (five-storey, nine-storey and sixteen-storey), which are built in Lithuania, provide detailed conclusions about the energy and engineering aspects of such systems. The authors also intend to determine the optimal technological combinations and solutions that would allow achieving maximum energy benefits (solar collectors for domestic hot water preparation and photovoltaic panels for electricity use). The old industrial buildings, now located near the city centres, redeveloping into commercial or residential use is very popular, but energy and especially comfort conditions not analysed because usually the specific projects are not made. This article provides an analysis of various aspects of energy demand and indoor thermal comfort when old, often unused industrial buildings are redeveloped for residential use. The results of the analysis, if the buildings are in use, show such redevelopment to be very efficient in terms of saving energy resources. In order to analyse thermal comfort of the redeveloped building, two different heating systems, radiator heating and floor heating, were examined. The performance of these systems was analysed with respect to three different room heights and window-to-wall ratios (hereinafter referred to as WWR). In order to simulate temperature distribution, computational fluid dynamics (hereinafter referred to as CFD) software SolidWorks®FlowSimulation was used. The results of the research demonstrate the acceptability of the heating systems in terms of indoor climate and thermal comfort as well as facilitate further discussion for future research in the field. This paper contains a thermal diagnostic method based on a new approach of wall discretization for buildings that predict energy behaviors, examined in both summer and winter periods. A computational approach has been adapted to determine the temperature distribution through the multilayered walls of the building. A new equation collects information relating to the internal temperature in relation to the external conditions. Moreover, the building's envelope has been deduced depending on conversion parametric, resistive parametric and generation coefficients. The thermal behavior of a cubic building designed in Fez- (Morocco) has been diagnosed to a dynamic state using the meteorological conditions. The external conditions, such as solar irradiation, natural convection and air exchange, have been modeled to indicate time related variations, step by step, that match the thermal model. In pursuance of interior thermal comfort in term of internal temperature, results shows that the building's should be oriented towards south with 26% of glazed surface, and air gaps thickness that is equal to 2 cm of polystyrene. In addition, the walls should be 0.84 W m−2 °C−1 instead of 0.7 W m−2 °C−1, which is the recommended value by the Moroccan Thermal Regulation of Construction. • A thermal diagnosis method of buildings using a new Approach of wall discretization in dynamic state. • The script of thermal diagnosis has been applied to a cubic building design in Fez city (Morocco). • The increase of glazing rate slightly downgraded the effect of the insulation, especially in summer. • A new equation that gather the internal temperature with the external conditions, and the building envelope is deduced.
