Abstract: The solar position algorithm (SPA) is a very accurate but slow algorithm for the computation of the Sun position with respect to an observer at ground surface. We compare the results of three fast algorithms to the SPA and establish their performances. We propose a new algorithm SG2 that is faster than the three others and offers the same level of accuracy than the most accurate, i.e., maximum error in solar vector of order of 10″, for a multi-decadal time period, with an example of a 50-year period: 1980–2030. This performance is achieved by devising approximations of the original equations of the SPA to decrease the number of operations. This yields a decrease in accuracy that is controlled and bounded. The mathematical tools permitting to determine these approximations with a selected uncertainty level are described. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper explores the capabilities of a combination of the reduced data set ISCCP-B2 from the Meteosat satellites and the recently developed method Heliosat-2 to assess the daily mean of the surface solar irradiance at any geographical site in Europe and Africa. Firstly, we discuss the implementation of the method Heliosat-2. Secondly, B2-derived irradiances are compared to coincident measurements made in meteorological networks for 90 stations from 1994 to 1997. Bias is less than 1Wm−2 for the whole set. Larger bias may be observed at individual sites, ranging from −15 to +32Wm−2. For the whole set, the root mean square difference is 35Wm−2 (17%) for daily mean irradiance and 25Wm−2 (12%) for monthly mean irradiance. These accuracies are close to those of similar data sets of irradiance, such as Medias and NASA Surface Radiation Budget. It is concluded that B2 data can be used in a reliable way to produce long-term time-series of irradiance for Europe, Africa and the Atlantic Ocean. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This article presents the method Heliosat-2 that converts observations made by geostationary meteorological satellites into estimates of the global irradiation at ground level. This new version integrates the knowledge gained by various exploitations of the original method Heliosat and its varieties in a coherent and thorough way. It is based upon the same physical principles but the inputs to the method are calibrated radiances, instead of the digital counts output from the sensor. This change opens the possibilities of using known models of the physical processes in atmospheric optics, thus removing the need for empirically defined parameters and of pyranometric measurements to tune them. The ESRA models are used for modeling the clear-sky irradiation. The assessment of the ground albedo and the cloud albedo is based upon explicit formulations of the path radiance and the transmittance of the atmosphere. The method Heliosat-2 is applied to Meteosat images of Europe for the months of January 1995, April 1995 and July 1994. Pyranometric measurements performed by thirty-five meteorological stations are used to assess the performances that are close to those of Heliosat-1 found in the literature. This work is a first attempt to propose a map of the solar radiation climate in Africa. Such a map is very useful for preliminary assessment and modeling of solar energy systems. Following the approach adopted for Europe, a data set of monthly means of the daily clearness index has been assembled for 62 sites. A cluster analysis was applied to create 20 classes that were reported on a map of Africa. These classes were geographically extended, thus creating a solar radiation climate map, comprising 20 climates. Known features and other atlases, global or local, were used in this mapping. This map and its companion tables permit to perform elementary energy calculations. Further improvements are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Linke turbidity factor (TL) has been estimated at 16 locations in Africa (9 stations in Egypt, 2 in Mozambique and Zimbabwe, 1 in Algeria, Tunisia and Zambia). An appropriate processing of time-series of measurements of daily sums of solar global radiation spanning several years provides mean values of TL for each month with a sufficient accuracy. Though limited to the Mediterranean area, Egypt and sub-tropical Southeastern part, this work greatly extends the knowledge on the clearness of the atmosphere in Africa, an area not much addressed in the literature. The relationship between TL and the climate is evidenced. TL is almost constant throughout the year close to the Mediterranean basin with values around 3.5. Stations located in the sub-tropical Southeastern part exhibit large variations of TL. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The direct irradiance received on a plane normal to the sun, called direct normal irradiance (DNI), is of particular relevance to concentrated solar technologies, including concentrating solar thermal plants and concentrated photovoltaic systems. Following various standards from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the DNI definition is related to the irradiance from a small solid angle of the sky, centered on the position of the sun. Half-angle apertures of pyrheliometers measuring DNI have varied over time, up to ≈10°. The current recommendation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for this half-angle is 2.5°. Solar concentrating collectors have an angular acceptance function that can be significantly narrower, especially for technologies with high concentration ratios. The disagreement between the various interpretations of DNI, from the theoretical definition used in atmospheric physics and radiative transfer modeling to practical definitions corresponding to specific measurements or conversion technologies is significant, especially in the presence of cirrus clouds or large concentration of aerosols. Under such sky conditions, the circumsolar radiation— i.e. the diffuse radiation coming from the vicinity of the sun—contributes significantly to the DNI ground measurement, although some concentrating collectors cannot utilize the bulk of it. These issues have been identified in the EU-funded projects MACC-II (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate-Interim Implementation) and SFERA (Solar Facilities for the European Research Area), and have been discussed within a panel of international experts in the framework of the Solar Heating and Cooling (SHC) program of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) Task 46 “ Solar Resource Assessment and Forecasting ”. In accordance with these discussions, the terms of reference related to DNI are specified here. The important role of circumsolar radiation is evidenced, and its potential contribution is evaluated for typical atmospheric conditions. For thorough analysis of performance of concentrating solar systems, it is recommended that, in addition to the conventional DNI related to 2.5° half-angle of today’s pyrheliometers, solar resource data sets also report the sunshape, the circumsolar contribution or the circumsolar ratio (CSR). Abstract: The Heliosat-2 method, which employs satellite images to assess solar irradiance at ground level, is one of the most accurate among the available operational methods. Its input variables have uncertainties which impact on the final result. The General Law of Uncertainty Propagation is employed to analyze the impact of these uncertainties on a single pixel with Meteosat-7 inputs in various stages, beginning with the sensitivity coefficients and the changes induced in the clear-sky index (KC ) by each independent variable. Once these coefficients are known, the partial combined standard uncertainty (CSU) is calculated for KC from each independent variable and albedo. Finally, the total CSU of KC is calculated. All of the results are in agreement and show that the most influential variables in the uncertainty of estimation of cloudy skies are, in this order, the Linke turbidity factor (54% of KC value), terrain elevation (33%), the calibration coefficient of the satellite sensor (13%) and the ground albedo (5%). What causes the initial uncertainty in the ground albedo is its variation over time and the difficulty in assessing it from a reflectance time-series for mixed clear and cloudy skies. The Linke turbidity factor is the most influential variable on the width of the uncertainty interval, not only because of its own uncertainty (17% in this study), but because it is also used in numerous intermediate calculations. Abstract: Maps of pollutants concentration are usually generated by means of interpolation and extrapolation methods. The quality of the results depends mainly of the number of permanent or temporary measuring stations. This paper deals with a method for the virtual densification of the network of stations. The method creates “virtual measuring stations”. It aims at improving the quality of interpolation by increasing the number of data on pollutant concentration. The virtual stations are determined by the means of a classification method applied to each pixel of the area under concern. Discriminating elements are pollutants emission classes, land cover types, urban morphological indicators created to this purpose and distance to major roads. A first implementation was made for particulate matter (PM) for the city of Strasbourg (France) using thin-plates spline interpolation method in Arcview 9 GIS. The relative Root Mean Square Error decreases from 49% for five input stations down to 15% for the virtual stations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Accurate solar irradiance data are not only of particular importance for the assessment of the radiative forcing of the climate system, but also absolutely necessary for efficient planning and operation of solar energy systems. Within the European project Heliosat-3, a new type of solar irradiance scheme is developed. This new type will be based on radiative transfer models (RTM) using atmospheric parameter information retrieved from the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite (clouds, ozone, water vapour) and the ERS-2/ENVISAT satellites (aerosols, ozone).This paper focuses on the description of the clear-sky module of the new scheme, especially on the integrated use of a radiative transfer model. The linkage of the clear-sky module with the cloud module is also briefly described in order to point out the benefits of the integrated RTM use for the all-sky situations. The integrated use of an RTM within the new Solar Irradiance Scheme SOLIS is applied by introducing a new fitting function called the modified Lambert–Beer (MLB) relation. Consequently, the modified Lambert–Beer relation and its role for an integrated RTM use are discussed. Comparisons of the calculated clear-sky irradiances with ground-based measurements and the current clear-sky module demonstrate the advantages and benefits of SOLIS. Since SOLIS can provide spectrally resolved irradiance data, it can be used for different applications. Beside improved information for the planning of solar energy systems, the calculation of photosynthetic active radiation, UV index, and illuminance is possible. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The control of the quality of irradiation data is often a prerequisite to their further processing. Though data are usually controlled by meteorological offices, the sources are so numerous that the user often faces time-series of measurements containing questionable values. As customers of irradiation data, we established our own procedures to screen time-series of measurements. Since this problem of quality control is of concern to many researchers and engineers and since it is often a lengthy and tedious task, we decided to make this screening procedure available to everyone as a web service. This service is the purpose of this paper. The objective is not to perform a precise and fine control, an objective out of reach without details on the site and instruments, but to perform a likelihood control of the data and to check their plausibility. This is achieved by comparing observations with some expectations based upon the extraterrestrial irradiation and a simulation of the irradiation for clear skies. This service is available to everyone on the Web site www.helioclim.net. It offers a very convenient means to check time-series of irradiation: data are input in a HTML page by a copy and paste procedure and the return is also a HTML page that can be analyzed in detail for the data flagged as suspicious.
