The Okhotsk Sea, a subarctic marginal sea with a wide shelf and abundant weathering products, provides ample information about the chemical weathering in the geological past. However, insufficient investigation in the Okhotsk Sea, especially in its shelf, limits our knowledge of the intensity of chemical weathering in high-latitudes. In this study, high-resolution geochemical elements compositions of the core LV87-54-1 were measured to reveal the provenance change in the Northern Okhotsk Sea Shelf since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and to discuss the influential factors of the deep-sea weathering records. The elemental ratios suggested that the sediment provenance remained stable during 23–11.4 ka, mainly transported from the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt; whereas the sediment input from the Kamchatka Peninsula to the study area has been enhanced since 11.4 ka. During 23–14 ka, the chemical index of alteration (CIA) was observed to align with climatic changes in the Northern Hemisphere. Synchronized climatic deterioration (i.e., cooling and drying) in the Northern Hemisphere mainly contributed to the reduced alteration of the sediments eroded from the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt. During 14–11.4 ka, the reworking of older weathered sediments caused by sea-level rise overwhelmed climates in controlling silicate weathering, resulting in an increased alteration of sediments. During the Holocene, the core sediment witnessed a lower weathering degree, compared to the LGM–Deglaciation. Study of sediment sources and transport pathways in the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas is vital for understanding the interaction of fluvial, ocean, and sea-ice dynamics. In this study, 42 samples were analyzed for heavy minerals and 23 were analyzed for garnet geochemistry. These analyses suggest that the surface sediment is mainly sourced from the surrounding rivers. There are distinctive performances between the heavy minerals and garnet geochemistry of sediments in the Chukchi Sea and the East Siberian Sea. The content of hypersthene increased significantly on the outer shelf of the Chukchi Sea. The garnet was derived from volcanic rocks of the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic province and transported from the Gulf of Anadyr by the Pacific inflow. Coastal erosion materials dominated in the inner shelf of the Chukchi Sea. A significant amount of river input occurred in the western, middle, and eastern parts of the East Siberian Sea. The inputs from the Indigirka River and Kolyma River tend to be distributed eastward. The garnet geochemistry shows that there was a mixed sedimentary zone located south of Wrangel Island. To understand the modern sedimentation and land-sea interaction processes in the Asian margin seas, we analyze rare earth element contents (REE, i.e., La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) and grain sizes, detrital minerals from 158 surface sediment samples collected from the western Gulf of Thailand (GoT). The results reveal that the REE contents ranged from 25.42 μg/g to 201.21 μg/g, with an average value of 137.21 μg/g, and that the GoT is characterized by higher accumulations of LREE relative to HREE, together with negative Eu anomalies. Based on the spatial distribution characteristics of REE contents, δCe and δEu, the western GoT can be classified into three geochemical provinces. The Province I covers the northern and northwestern coastal zones of the GoT, including the entire upper GoT; its coarse size fraction and distribution pattern of hornblende- and quartz-dominated minerals caused REE contents to be the lowest, and these sediments were mainly derived from the rivers around the upper GoT, including the Chao Praya River and the Kea Klong River. The Province II is located in the central GoT and has the highest REE concentrations due to finer sediment composition and higher contents of zircon, authigenic pyrite, and biogenetic limestone. The Province II has two accumulation centers around Samui Island and Koh Chang Island, with REE spatial distribution influenced by the seasonal setting and mixed derived from multiple provenances around the GoT. The Province Ш is located in the lower GoT, close to Malaysia. The sediment type in this region is similar to that of Province I except for different detrital mineral compositions, especially the presence of siderite that is responsible for higher REE contents. The sediments in this region exhibits similar distribution patterns to those of terrestrial materials from the Malaysian peninsula such as that from the Kelantan River. The fullest summary on composition, age and distribution of 23 tephra layers detected and investigated in the Okhotsk Sea Pleistocene-Holocene deposits is presented. Seven tephra layers are surely identified with powerful explosive eruptions of volcanoes of Kamchatka, Kurile and Japanese Islands. For them, the areas of ash falls including which weren't revealed earlier on the land are specified and established. It is estimated that explosive eruptions of volcanoes of the Kamchatka Sredinny Range were the sources for three tephra layers. Complex investigations of morphological, mineralogical and chemical composition of tephras including composition of rare and earth-rare elements (electron microprobe analysis and laser ablation method - LA ICP MS) have been made for all studied layers. They were a basis for tephrostratigraphic correlation of the regional deposits promoting to specification of stages of volcanic explosive activity in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sediment core OS03-1 retrieved from the Akademia Nauk Rise in Southern Okhotsk Sea was analyzed for the contents of rare earth elements (REEs) and combined with carbon isotope (δ 13 C) time series of benthic foraminifera to infer changes in terrigenous accumulation and bottom water ventilation on glacial–interglacial timescales in the study area. The age model of OS03-1 was constructed by a combination of foraminifer δ 18 O stratigraphy and 14 C AMS dating, revealing that the 380 cm long core provides a window on climate change in the southern Okhotsk Sea since ∼180 ka. A grain size-controlled-REE content shows strong glacial–interglacial changes. The Cerium and Europium anomalies vary from 0.89 to 1.32 and from 1.14 to 1.37, respectively. The (La/Yb) N values range between 0.55 to 0.92. Both results suggest a significant contribution of volcanic debris in the core sediments. In addition, the relationships between Sm vs. Nd suggest main contribution origin from the Amur River and sea ice during warm intervals and from the sea ice during cold intervals, indicating that the sea ice played an important role in transporting terrigenous materials to the study site in the southern Okhotsk Sea. During the last 180 ka, the mass accumulation rates (MAR) of ∑REEs are relatively higher during glacials and lower during interglacials with a peak accumulation during the early deglacial period. We infer that an intensified Mongolia High is responsible for the first-order accumulation pattern of ∑REEs in the southern Okhotsk Sea by mediating the dynamic changes in sea ice extent. Furthermore, six δ 13 C minima are associated with intensified Asian monsoon (AM) precipitation and maximum MARs of ∑REEs, indicating that the dominance of barrier layer effects by high fresh water input through sea ice melting. The maximum MAR of ∑REEs during the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5c coincides with the minimum of benthic foraminiferal δ 13 C, indicating a major interruption of ventilation in the bottom water in the Okhotsk Sea. The major low ventilation event in the deep water of the Okhotsk Sea appears to be dampened by a cooling condition and a major blooming of surface productivity preceded the event. Abstract: Two gravity cores collected off the modern Huanghe (Yellow River) delta in the southern Bohai Sea were analyzed for grain size, the total organic carbon (TOC)/total nitrogen (TN) ratio, color diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, 14C dating and 137Cs and 210Pb isotope contents to clarify changes in the sedimentary environment during the Holocene. In particular, the effect of natural and artificial river-course shifts of the Huanghe on the Bohai Sea sediment was investigated. A peat layer, scouring surface and sharp changes in the grain size, TOC/TN ratio, sediment color (L ⁎, a ⁎) and magnetic susceptibility were identified and are likely to be due to the early-Holocene sea-level rise resulting in environmental changes from coastal to shelf environments in the Bohai Sea. After the sea level reached its maximum at 6–7kaBP, the lateral shifts in the river course of the Huanghe formed 10 superlobes, and superlobe 7 (11–1048 AD) and superlobe 10 (1855–present) of the Huanghe delta affected the core sites. The northern site of BH-239 has been more affected by the Huanghe since the middle Holocene. Notably, in the superlobe 10 period, the reshaping of the northern Huanghe delta due to an artificial river-course shift from northward to eastward in 1976 (e.g., a∼10km shoreline retreat due to coastal erosion) was recorded in the core sediments, particularly in terms of the TOC/TN ratio, sediment color (L ⁎ and a ⁎) and magnetic susceptibility, owing to the huge sediment supply from coastal erosion of the former river mouth area. Abstract: There are several micro-blocks dispersed in the South China Sea (SCS), e.g., Xisha-Zhongsha block, Nansha block and Reed-Northeastern Palawan block, etc., but detailed petrological constraints on their basement nature were previously lacking. The magmatic ages for granitic rock samples from two dredge stations in the Nansha micro-block vary from 159 to 127Ma, which are comparable to magmatic activities occurred in the northern margin (Pearl river mouth), HongKong and East China. Petrographic characteristics, major-, trace element and Sr–Nd isotopic data of nine samples from two dredged station performed in the Nansha micro-block, the SCS, are reported. Petrographically, these granitic rocks can be divided into two groups which underwent a complex history of magmatic process, i.e., tonalitic rock (Group I) and monzogranitic rock (Group II). The Rittmann index (σ) for these rocks (1.9–3.1) suggest that they belong to calc-alkaline rocks. Group I rocks which is of typical I-type, have higher contents of TiO2, Al2O3, FeO, MgO, CaO, Na2O and P2O5, but lower values of SiO2 and K2O, when compared with those of Group II with I-type characteristics. Group I rocks are produced by partial melting of older Precambrian basement with the variable influence of mantle-derived magma which results from the interaction of released fluids from the subducted slab and the overlying mantle wedge in a general convergent margin setting, and Group II rocks result from partial melting of lower crustal basic rocks (amphibolite) and/or further partial melting of the Group I rocks associated with the variable influence from the underplating mantle-derived magma resulting from lithospheric extensional regime. Both Groups I and II have undergone assimilation and fractional crystallization (AFC) processes during its petrogenesis. This study therefore demonstrates that there exists a continental basement within micro-blocks in the South China Sea, and further supports the idea that a Middle Jurassic to Mid-Cretaceous subduction zone existed across the temporary Taiwan, Palawan to Southern Vietnam, which was associated with westward to northestward convergence of the Pacific Plate during Late Mesozoic. We suggest that this subduction zone may have been connected with the paleo-Pacific plate subduction zone offshore eastern China during Mesozoic era. To understand the modern sedimentation and land-sea interaction processes in the Sunda Shelf, we evaluated the rare earth element (REE) compositions, the total organic carbon (TOC) contents, grain sizes, and detrital minerals of 39 surface sediments, collected from the western Sunda Shelf. All of the sampled sediments are characterised by a higher content of light REEs (LREEs) relative to the content of heavy REEs (HREEs) with negative Eu anomalies. The total content of REE (ΣREE) in the sediments ranges from 7 μg/g to 193 μg/g, with an average of 119 μg/g. Due to the uneven spatial distribution of REEs in the study area, a Q-cluster analysis is applied to the mean grain size (Mz), ∑REE, δEu, δCe, (La/Yb) N , and (Gd/Yb) N data. On this basis, the study area can be classified into three geochemical provinces. The north to central zone in the study area is designated as province I, which has the highest REE content among the three provinces. This is a result of the finer grain size, dominance of siderite, and higher TOC contents of the sediments in province I. The REE content of province II in the southwest coastal zone is lower than that of province I due primarily to a coarser grain size and high quartz, biodetritus, and plagioclase contents. Covering the central coastal zone, province III has the lowest REE content among the three provinces because of the extremely coarse grain size and very high quartz and biodetritus contents. The upper continental crust (UCC)-normalised REE patterns differ markedly among the three provinces, thereby indicating different provenances and transport mechanisms. Based on the provenance discrimination plot and the UCC-normalised REE patterns of these three provinces and adjacent rivers, we infer that province I is largely fed by the Mekong and Kelantan rivers. The fine-grained sediments from these rivers are transported to north and central zone by the northeast monsoon current. The Pahang River is identified as the main sediment source of province II. The coarse-grained sediments from this river mostly accumulate near the estuary via hydrodynamic sorting, while finer-grained sediments are transported to the south by the southward coastal currents. The sediments in province III are inferred as being primarily the result of coastal erosion due to the strong wave energy in this area, as well as offshore and longshore sediment transport acting, in parallel to the coast line.
