Watts Abstract: Territorial boundary patrols are a distinctive and unique aspect of wild chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes, behaviour. Although patrolling has been frequently observed in nature and several proposed functional explanations for it exist, scant information is available regarding the proximate factors that affect this activity. We found that there is considerable temporal variation in the frequency of patrolling by chimpanzees at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda. We examined several ecological and social factors that potentially influence this variation. Results of logistic regression analyses revealed that male party size was the single best predictor of the tendency to patrol. Lethal intergroup aggression occurs in chimpanzees, and patrols are likely to be dangerous and costly. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that chimpanzees at Ngogo reduce these costs by patrolling together in large parties. Researchers observed a large community of chimpanzees at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda, to determine factors affecting affiliation and cooperation among males of the group. The results suggest that male chimpanzees of the same age class and rank are more likely to affiliate and cooperate than males belonging to different age and rank groups. The results also confirm earlier findings that maternal kinship does not bias affiliation and cooperation behavior.

This paper conducts a cultural political economy (CPE) analysis of consumers’ semiotic and material construals of alternative food networks (AFN). It starts by outlining, in the context of debate over AFN, why CPE is a useful analytical tool. The collection of talk data from 40 respondents, and food consumption data from 20 respondents, is outlined and explained. Talk data reveal that interviewees construe conventional and alternative food networks differently based on values relating to food quality judgements, provenance and trust, and alternativeness. Consumption data demonstrate respondents’ material engagement with conventional and, to a lesser extent, alternative food networks. The paper concludes that CPE is a productive framework for analysing AFN qua a subaltern economic imaginary, and that it can help to set them on ‘firmer’ ground, both ontologically and normatively. Objectives: Illness can disrupt training and competition performance of athletes. Few studies have quantified the relative contribution of the known medical, behavioural and lifestyle risk factors.Design: Cross-sectional.Methods: Olympic athletes from 11 sports (n=221) were invited to complete questionnaires administered nine months before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. These included the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Questionnaire (DASS-21), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Dispositional Resilience Scale (DRS), Recovery-Stress Questionnaire (REST-Q-52 item), Low Energy in Females Questionnaire (LEAF-Q), a modified Personal and Household Hygiene questionnaire, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and custom-made questionnaires on probiotic usage and travel. An illness (case) was defined as an event which limited training or competition for greater hours in the prior month. Odds ratios and attributable fractions in the population (AFP) were utilised for categorical variables with independent t-tests or Wilcoxon rank-sum for continuous variables.Results: Eighty-one athletes responded (male, n=26; female, n=55). There were 16 illness cases and 65 controls. Female athletes were at higher odds of illness (OR=9.4, 95%CI 1.3-410, p=0.01, AFP=0.84). Low energy availability (LEAF-Q score ≥8: OR=7.4, 95%CI 0.78-352, p=0.04, AFP=0.76), depression symptoms (DASS-21: depression score >4, OR=8.4, 95%CI 1.1-59, p<0.01; AFP=0.39) and higher perceived stress (PSS: 10-item, p=0.04) were significantly associated with illness.Conclusions: Female sex, low energy availability, and mental health are associated with sports incapacity (time loss) due to illness. Hunting is a rural activity and attempts to influence it are often framed, in northern Europe, in terms of ‘urban elites’ seeking to impose their will on ‘rural’ cultures. Hunting cultures are the subject of this paper, but instead of focusing on their relationship with conservation, as most previous work has done, it explores their interaction with proposals to expand commercial hunting tourism to generate endogenous economic development in remote rural areas of Scotland and Finland. It does so by examining stakeholders' attitudes towards the potential for increased commercial hunting tourism in peripheral areas in Scotland and Finland. The paper identifies a neoliberal policy perspective that recasts such areas as ‘resource peripheries’ and outlines their dominant hunting cultures. Using qualitative, semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, it explores the motives and means for dominant hunting cultures to exert ‘frictional’ resistance on attempts to ‘re-map’ peripheral areas in ways which were perceived to work against their interests. The paper highlights the importance of taking account of the influence of dominant hunting cultures on attempts to introduce neoliberal economic development policies in resource peripheries, especially where they may have an impact on game resources. By demonstrating the frictional resistance that they can exert on such policies, it sheds light on a neglected aspect of hunting cultures. The paper suggests that, rather than demonstrating the limits of neoliberalism, these northern peripheries are increasingly its deliberately constructed ‘other’. This is because Scotland's and, to lesser but growing extent, Finland's dominant hunting cultures are maintained by people who lives are led for the most part outside the ‘northern periphery’. We examined the suitability of two deciduous arctic shrubs ( Salix glauca L. and Betula nana L., hereafter Salix and Betula , respectively) for dendroclimatological analysis at two sites in West Greenland. Chronologies were successfully cross-dated, and the oldest covered the period 1954–2010 (Expressed Population Signal [EPS] > 0.85, 1977–2010). Distinctive pointer years, also called micro-rings, including those from a known outbreak of the irruptive moth Eurois occulta L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) that peaked in 2005, assisted in the dating process. Climate-growth analyses were performed in two ways: first, using correlation analysis between residual site-level chronologies and monthly and seasonal climate data, and second, using linear mixed effects models (LMM) with seasonal climate data and standardized chronologies for each individual. We used climate data for the current and previous years for a given growth ring for both analyses. Both analyses revealed differences in climate-growth response among species and among sites of contrasting topography. Salix ring widths from south facing slopes correlated positively with current year’s summer temperatures, while those on gentle slopes associated negatively with current year’s spring precipitation. Betula was only sampled at one site (flat), and displayed associations with temperature and precipitation in spring. Results from the LMM largely corroborated the correlations for Betula and Salix on south facing slopes. Salix at the flat site displayed significant associations with a large number of climate variables, most strongly previous year’s summer and autumn temperatures, though precipitation in multiple seasons of the current and prior year did a better job of accounting for the variation in the data. Many dendrochronological studies in the Arctic illustrate clear summer temperature responses, but the majority were conducted on a single topographic position. Due to the heterogeneity of West Greenland’s landscapes, it is important to examine individuals from varying topographies. We found that samples collected from south facing slopes do appear to respond positively to summer temperatures, while those on shallow slopes respond to a wider array of seasonal temperature and precipitation parameters. Accounting for these species and topographic differences, when sampling, is imperative for improving our understanding of how plant communities in the Arctic will respond to ongoing and expected warming. A new study of chimpanzees seeks to determine the factors influencing their hunting and meat sharing decisions. Three common hypotheses are tested.

Abstract: Grant schemes introduced under the first England Rural Development Programme (ERDP) (2000–2006) have been subjected to limited academic research and this paper aims to fill this gap by examining the attitudes of food entrepreneurs in two contiguous English regions to two key elements of the ERDP: the Processing and Marketing Grant (PMG) and the Rural Enterprise Scheme (RES). It does this through a qualitative analysis of data gathered from interviews with 20 ‘adopters’ and 20 ‘non-adopters’ of the two schemes in the South West and West Midlands regions of England. The analysis reveals that, despite the rural development rhetoric, neither the PMG nor the RES was particularly effective at funding enterprises beyond the farm gate; both schemes also appeared to attract what can be described as ‘serial adopters’ and to discriminate against those without experience of applying for government grants. Nevertheless, indirectly they did provide opportunities to safeguard and expand local and regional food production, processing and retailing in the two regions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Little research has been conducted on the restructuring activities of tenant farmers in response to changing tenancy legislation and recent CAP reforms. This paper examines the geography of farm tenancy agreements in England since 1995 and presents some findings from postal and telephone surveys on the possible future business trajectories of tenant farmers and the changing nature of landlord–tenant relationships. A clear north–south divide is identified in terms of farm tenancy agreements and a complex array of different tenancy agreements is demonstrated. The relationships between landlords and tenants are changing and the increasing variety of agreements provides evidence of a more fluid (post-feudal) system of agricultural leases. Nevertheless, high levels of uncertainty and negativity characterise tenant farmers’ views on the impacts of CAP reforms. Crucially, the very identity of a tenant farmer is changing, towards an owner-occupier who rents additional land, and there is an urgent need for more detailed research on the ‘consequential geographies’ of farm property rights and the changing nature of landlord–tenant relationships. Abstract: This paper examines the geography of two policy instruments – the Rural Enterprise Scheme (RES) and the Processing and Marketing Grant (PMG) – that formed part of the second ‘pillar’ of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in England between 2000 and 2006. It starts by outlining the ongoing debate over the role of geography in policy research, an outcome of which has been a call for more empirical work that explores the ‘difference that place makes’ in the implementation of public funding mechanisms. The paper argues that the CAP is ripe for geographical analysis, as the Agenda 2000 reforms can be interpreted as moving it away from a ‘sectoral’ (agricultural) approach to a more ‘territorial’ (rural development) one. After outlining the place of the RES and PMG in the reformed CAP in England, the paper discusses three factors – farm size, proportion of land rented and location – that may have influenced their geographies. The distribution of grant approvals under these schemes is then mapped using location quotients. Following this, the potential influence of the factors outlined above is tested using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistic. The conclusion revisits the opening discussion by reflecting on the difference that place has made to the implementation of the PMG and RES. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Little work has considered explicitly the role of farm tenancy in influencing the uptake (or not) of diversification activities. The need to examine this link has been heightened because of the 2003 CAP reforms and the decision to tie Single Farm Payment (SFP) entitlement to the land rather than what is produced on that land. The main objective of this paper, therefore, is to examine the nature of diversification activities on tenant farms in England, which includes a consideration of how the introduction of the SFP and other CAP reforms may influence such restructuring processes. Results from a national postal survey, supported by tenant farmer/landlord interviews and a workshop, reveal high rates of farm diversification on farms with tenanted land. However, if one takes away contract/hire services the rate of diversification on tenant farms is much less. Tenant farms appear to favour more ‘traditional’ diversification activities and the results also demonstrate an increasing need to move towards more ‘encultured’ definitions of farm diversification. The second key finding to emerge from the research relates to the high levels of uncertainty and negativity surrounding the potential impacts of the CAP reforms, and SFP in particular, on farm business behaviour. Abstract: Introduction: A potentially damaging temperature rise within the root canal and thus on the external root surface may be induced because of frictional contact of ultrasonic tips during the removal of separated instruments. The efficiency of a new ultrasonic unit, with air-spray function and ET40D (Satelec/Acteon, Merignac, France) and CPR5 (Obtura-Spartan, Fenton, MO) ultrasonic tips, in reducing temperature rise on the external root surface during the removal of fractured files was investigated. Methods: Four millimeters of F2 ProTaper files (Dentsply, Surrey, UK) were fractured 2.5 mm from the canal access of 60 lower incisor roots. Roots were randomly divided into six groups: groups CPR5/no air and ET40D/no air in which tips were used without air flow, groups CPR5/15 psi and ET40D/15 psi (tips used with 15-psi air pressure), and groups CPR5/10 psi and ET40D/10 psi (10-psi air pressure). The temperature rise was measured on the external proximal root surface, adjacent to the most coronal aspect of the fractured fragment, at 15 seconds and then at 30-second intervals up to 120 seconds. Results: After 120 seconds, the mean temperature rise (4.2°C) with the air flow active was significantly lower than that with nonactive air flow (11°C). At 10- and 15-psi pressures, the temperature rise after 120 seconds induced by ET40D tips was 4° and 2.4°C, respectively. These were significantly lower than with CPR5 tips (6.3° and 4.2°C, respectively). Conclusions: A new ultrasonic unit incorporating an air-flow function proved to be effective in reducing the temperature rise during removal of fractured files. ET40D ultrasonic tips were more effective than the CPR5 tip. However, both tips could be safely activated with air spray up to 120 seconds. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Summary: This in vitro study evaluated the effect of polishing after 1-day storage in water on the gap-formation around a Class V and Class I restorations, using a resin-modified glass–ionomer and a conventional glass–ionomer materials. The study also examined the gap-formation in another two different cervical restorations, a cervical cavity: incisally bordered by enamel and cervically by dentin and a root surface cavity of these restorative materials, which may be effects of this polishing procedure. This study evaluated the effects of delayed versus immediate polishing to permit maturation on: (1) interfacial gap-formation around resin-modified (RMGIC) and conventional (CGIC) in three types of cervical restorations, (2) interfacial gap-formation around highly viscous conventional glass–ionomer cement (HCGIC) in Class I restorations. After polishing procedure, either: (i) immediately (3 or 6min) after setting or (ii) after 24h storage, the maximum the restored teeth were sectioned in a mesio-distal direction through the center of the restorations. The presence or absence of interfacial-gaps was measured at 14 points (each 0.5-mm apart) along the cavity restoration interface. For various restorative cases, significant differences (p <0.05) in gap-width or gap-incidence, were observed between polishing (i) immediately and (ii) after 1-day storage. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This in vitro study aimed to investigate the effect of ultrasonic removal of endodontic fractured files on tooth structure. Fifty-three canine roots were cleaned and weighed. They were scanned by a microcomputed tomography scanner producing two-dimensional images that were reconstructed into two-dimensional slices, and, finally, the canal volume was measured. In a control group, canals were prepared to F5-size ProTaper (Dentsply Ltd, Surrey, UK). In three experimental groups, F5-fractured files were ultrasonically removed from three root canal locations: coronal, middle, and apical. All roots were reweighed and rescanned. Reconstruction and analysis were performed to remeasure the canal volume. The differences in root mass (weight) and canal volume between before and after treatment were calculated. The highest change increase in canal volume was found when fractured files were removed from the apical part followed by middle and coronal. A positive correlation existed between canal volume and root mass changes. Microcomputed tomography scanning can reliably determine changes in canal volume resulting from fractured-file removal. This clinical report describes the use of a glass fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) substructure to reinforce the silicone elastomer of a large facial prosthesis. The FRC substructure was shaped into a framework and embedded into the silicone elastomer to form a reinforced facial prosthesis. The prosthesis is designed to overcome the disadvantages associated with traditionally fabricated prostheses; namely, delamination of the silicone of the acrylic base, poor marginal adaptation over time, and poor simulation of facial expressions. Abstract: Temperature rise (TR) on the external root surface during ultrasonic removal of separated files (SFs) from 50 lower incisors roots of 10-mm length was investigated. CPR ultrasonic tips (Obtura-Spartan, Fenton, MO) were used dry to retrieve F2 ProTaper (Dentsply, Surrey, UK) segments fractured 2.5 mm from the coronal access in five groups: CPR2, CPR5, and CPR6 at power setting 1 and CPR5 at power settings 2.5 and 5. Temperature changes were inspected at 30-second intervals up to 120 seconds at three different sites: two at mesiodistal and buccolingual surfaces adjacent to the most coronal aspect of the SF and the third adjacent to the most apical aspect. Overall, the highest mean TR was at the buccolingual root surface followed by that at the mesiodistal and the more apical site surfaces. At power setting 1, CPR6 produced a significantly lower TR than CPR5, and both can be used for 120 and 60 seconds, respectively. Power setting 5 is not recommended for the removal of SF because this induces a hazardous TR. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of indirect ultrasonic activation on the incidence of voids within mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) root canal fillings and at their interface with the canal walls by using a nondestructive 3-dimensional (3D) micro–computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. Methods: Extracted human teeth with single canals and minimal curvatures were decoronated, instrumented to size 50/05 apically, and randomly allocated into 4 groups (n = 12). MTA was compacted manually by using hand pluggers in group A (MC). Indirect ultrasonic activation was applied to each increment of manually compacted MTA for 1 second in group B (1 sec-UC), 5 seconds in group C (5 sec-UC), and 10 seconds in group D (10 sec-UC). Filled roots were scanned with a micro-CT device, and 3D analysis of void incidence was carried out by using the SkyScan software. Results: Statistical analysis showed a significantly lower incidence of voids (P < .05) in the manual compaction (MC) group (0.7%) compared with the ultrasonic activation for 1 second (3.8%), 5 seconds (1.7%), and 10 seconds (1.6%) groups. Conclusions: Manual compaction produced significantly denser root fillings than those achieved with ultrasonic activation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: An 86-year-old woman presented to our emergency department obtunded and intubated after she was found comatose below a second-story window. Family members found bottles of eszopiclone (Lunesta) and amitriptyline/perphenazine. The patient intentionally overdosed and then jumped from the window, sustaining multiple orthopedic injuries. She was hypothermic with a Glasgow Coma Scale of 3T on arrival. She underwent standard resuscitation measures but remained comatose for 48 hours despite the absence of neurologic trauma or sedative medications. Her mental status gradually improved and she was extubated 72 hours after admission without further neurologic sequelae. She admitted ingesting 30 three-milligram tablets of eszopiclone (30 times standard dosing) before jumping from the window. Her pharmacy confirmed filling prescriptions for 30 tablets of eszopiclone the day before admission. We suspect eszopiclone, a new nonbenzodiazepine sedative, as the cause of this patient''s prolonged obtundation. We believe this represents the largest reported overdose of eszopiclone.
