34. Preparation, microstructure and properties of cordierite-mullite-corundum porous ceramics for high-temperature gas-solid separation.

Abstract

In order to obtain ceramic materials for high-temperature gas-solid separation, the cordierite-mullite-corundum porous ceramics were prepared by particle stacking and pore-forming agent method, with bauxite as aggregate and in-situ synthesized cordierite as binder. Designed four-factor four-level orthogonal experiments for the first time to improve the porosity of the samples. The phase composition and microstructure of the samples were studied by XRD, SEM and other testing methods. The results show that: X6 sample (firing temperature of 1340 °C, 50 wt% binder, aggregate coarse, medium and fine mass percentage 30:50:20, plus 20 wt% charcoal powder, 10 wt% graphite) has the best comprehensive performance, with porosity of 41.51 % and bending strength of 17.88 MPa. Pore size distribution range from 10 to 40 μm. Corundum and mullite, with excellent high-temperature properties formed by the aggregate, are tightly bonded together by cordierite, contributing to the strength of the porous ceramics. The addition of pore-forming agent improves the porosity and forms a stable and uniform pore structure in the porous ceramics. The high porosity and large connected pore size reduce the viscous resistance of the porous ceramics to the gas, improve the filtration performance of the material, and make it expected to be applied in the field of hot gas clean-up. Abstract

Mullite ceramic materials have a number of excellent properties that make them an excellent choice for solar heat absorber materials in Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems. In this study, the effects of adding Co 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 on the properties of mullite-based ceramics were studied, aiming to get excellent absorption rate and thermal shock resistance. The results show that the sample C2 (45.05 wt% 75 calcined bauxite, 45.05 wt% Suzhou clay, 9 wt% Fe 2 O 3 , 3 wt% Co 2 O 3) sintered at 1400 °C has the best comprehensive performance, with a bending strength of 143.28 MPa and a solar absorption rate of 92.2 % in the wavelength range of 0.3–2.5 μm. The bending strength increased by 31.36 % after thermal shock cycles for 30 times (1000 °C ∼ room temperature, air cooling). Generation of iron cobalt spinel and lattice distortion caused by Fe3+ and Co3+ into the mullite lattice combined to promote the absorption rate. In the meantime, the main crystalline phase columnar mullite showed a tight continuous interlaced network structure. Abstract

ZrO 2 –Al 2 O 3 -A 3 S 2 (3Al 2 O 3 ·2SiO 2) composites are ideal Casting filter materials with excellent mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance. In this paper, 3Y–ZrO 2 (3 mol% Y 2 O 3 -stabilized ZrO 2) was added to kaolin and α-Al 2 O 3 to prepare ZrO 2 –Al 2 O 3 -A 3 S 2 composites by pressureless sintering. The results showed that when the addition amount of 3Y–ZrO 2 is 15 wt%, the bending strength and fracture toughness of the composites sintered at 1600 °C are 152.51 MPa and 3.52 MPa m1/2, respectively. The bending strength increased to 161.83 MPa after 30 thermal shocks (1100 °C to room temperature), with an increase rate of 6.11 %. The ZrO 2 crystals are evenly distributed between corundum and mullite crystals, effectively preventing abnormal growth of corundum and mullite crystals, and a small number of pores exist in the samples, which could act as a "buffer zone" to prevent the expansion of cracks in the thermal shock, resulting in high mechanical strength and excellent thermal shock resistance for composites. Abstract

High-temperature stable thermal storage materials are urgently needed to meet the demand for solar thermal power generation. Herein, Cu–20Si alloy-corundum ceramic composite thermal storage materials are prepared. The thermal storage performance of the composite, and the erosion resistance of ceramic matrix to alloy are investigated during high-temperature (1000 °C) service for 1000 h. The results show that the latent heat of Cu–20Si alloy is increased by 130.76 % to 201.2 kJ/kg compared with the original. Meanwhile, the alloy forms a dense transition layer on the ceramic matrix surface by melting and spreading. Furthermore, the ceramic matrix shows superior erosion resistance to the alloy, owing to the dense structure of ceramic and no chemical reactions between the alloy and ceramic matrix. Finally, test results of long-time service confirm the stability of the composite, which can be used stably for high temperature thermal storage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
