Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a recognized technique in health sciences for diagnosis, prognosis, and experimental purposes. In oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) studies, IHC has been widely used; however, there is lack of standardization in the analytical phase involving methods of scoring and grading as well as reporting the results. To assess and compare the scoring methods between different OSCC studies. Medline and Ovid advanced literature search platform were used to search for human studies published in English from 2010 to 2020. Search terms were a combination ("AND") of the following 4 sets of keywords: (1) oral squamous cell carcinoma; (2) immunohistochemi*; (3) scor*; and (4) grad*. The reference lists of the searched articles were comprehensively reviewed to remove duplicates, case reports, letters, reviews, and animal studies. Further screening of the abstracts excluded unrelated studies that did not meet the inclusion criteria. Finally, full-text articles were assessed for eligibility. A total of 808 studies met the keyword search. Most were original research articles. However, further selection has to be done to fulfill the inclusion and exclusion criteria, as well as to choose only articles that describe the methods in details. Commonly used semiquantitative assessments of IHC staining are described to facilitate analysis of OSCC studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
