Several studies indicate that some cognitive changes occur after COVID-19. Visuospatial alterations have been reported in 24–40 %. These alterations may be useful as early biomarkers of neurodegenerative disease. Thus, we can emphasize the importance of visuospatial processes in cognition through quantitative and qualitative analysis of performance on the Clock Test (CDT) and the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (FCRO). Our objective was to describe the performance of post COVID 19 patients in visuospatial tests, with different degrees of respiratory impairment and to perform a qualitative analysis of the performance to check its relationship with alterations in attention and executive functions. This will allow highlighting the executive component of the performance of the CDT and ROCF and differentiate patients with possible cognitive impairment. 77 patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection were evaluated (3 months post-infection) with a complete neuropsychological battery and MRI. Overall, there is a significant difference between FCRO and CDT, with FCRO having only 9 % change and CDT having 51.9 % change. Regarding the correlations observed between groups (VM Inv, VM non I and non hospitalized) the highest correlations were observed between Boston with FCRO copy (r=0.497; p=0.001) and with FCRO memory (r=0.429; p=0.001). Comparing the performance between groups by severity, significant differences were observed only in the TMT A (13.706 p=0.001) and B (9.583 p=0.008) tests and in the phonological fluency letter A (13.445 p=0.001), we observed that the group of non-hospitalized patients had a better performance. Neuropsychological deficits often have a direct impact on daily life by affecting the ability to learn and adapt. Thus, a useful strategy for the neuropsychological characterization of post-COVID-19 patients is the qualitative analysis of visuospatial abilities in conjunction with executive functions that cannot be analyzed in isolation. There has been a great deal of interest in understanding the role that individual differences play in the development of juvenile delinquency and adult criminal behavior. One trait that has received some attention is neuropsychological functioning. The current study expanded on this research by examining whether adolescent neuropsychological functioning was associated with being arrested as a juvenile and being incarcerated as an adult. To do so, data drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) were analyzed. The results of the models, that included controls for key criminogenic influences, revealed that neuropsychological functioning was associated with the odds of being arrested as a juvenile under some statistical conditions and with being incarcerated as an adult. Moreover, neuropsychological functioning was also associated with being incarcerated as an adult among those participants who had been arrested as a juvenile. Given the robustness of the connection between neuropsychological functioning and these criminal outcomes, we conclude by discussing the importance of criminological research more fully exploring the criminogenic influence of neuropsychological functioning across the entire life course. • We examined the link between neuropsychological functioning (NF) and juvenile arrest. • We also examined the link between NF and adulthood incarceration. • Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were analyzed. • NF was associated with the odds of juvenile arrest in the baseline model, but not the full model. • NF was associated with the odds of adulthood incarceration in the full sample and among juvenile arrestees. Our work aims to investigate the role of physiological arousal in the expression of neuropsychological deficits in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE), by drawing on the Lurian theory of brain function. For this study a total of 43 patients with focal onset epilepsy has been taken; twenty-four patients with FLE, 19 patients with mTLE and 26 healthy controls, all matched for age and education. Participants underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment including various cognitive domains, such as attention, episodic memory, speed of information processing, response inhibition and mental flexibility, working memory, verbal fluency (phonological & semantic). There were no significant differences between FLE and mTLE patients in terms of neuropsychological performance. However, both FLE and mTLE patients showed significantly worse performance in several cognitive domains than HCs. The results seem to support our hypothesis that aberrant physiological arousal, as reflected in patients' worse performance in vigilance and attention, response inhibition, and processing speed, along with other disease-specific variables, may co-determine neuropsychological dysfunction and/or impairment in both FLE and mTLE. Identifying a differential arousal-related neuropsychological affection in FLE and mTLE, among the known deleterious effects of the functional deficit zone and other disease-related variables, may further our understanding of the underlying cognitive-pathophysiological mechanisms in focal epilepsy syndromes. • Neuropsychological dysfunction in FLE and mTLE is partially shaped by aberrant arousal dynamics. • FLE and mTLE performed significantly worse than healthy controls in a wide range of neuropsychological measures. • Arousal deregulation in FLE and mTLE is probably determined by different cognitive pathophysiological mechanisms. • Studying cognitive mechanisms in FLE and mTLE can enhance our understanding of relevant neuropsychological characteristics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Objective To investigate longitudinal performance on an executive functioning task among individuals with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and the impact of obesity on performance. Methods Participants completed the Trail Making Test Part B (TMT-B), which is an executive functioning task that measured cognitive flexibility, at baseline, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analyses were used to assess participants’ initial performance on the task, as well the trajectories of growth on the task across time points. Additionally, body mass index (BMI) was included in the estimations of fixed and random effects as a predictor of performance. Results There were no significant differences between obese and non-obese individuals on the cognitive flexibility task at baseline. However, obese and non-obese individuals differed significantly in their linear and quadratic rates of growth across time points. Conclusions This study suggests that obese and non-obese individuals may differentially respond to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment (as related to cognitive flexibility). Background To evaluate evidence and prognosis of refractory cases of absence seizures. Methods Subjects with refractory absence seizures were identified retrospectively in 17 Italian epilepsy pediatrics Centers. We analyzed age at onset, family history, presence of myoclonic components, seizure frequency, treatment with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), interictal electroencephalography (EEG) and neuropsychological assessment. Two subgroups were identified: one with patients with current absence seizures and another with patients that had become seizure free with or without AED treatment. The chi-square test was applied. Results A total of 92 subjects with drug-resistant absence seizures were analyzed. 45 subjects still show absence seizures (49%) and the other 47 became seizure free (51%) after a period of drug-resistance. The statistical analysis between these two groups showed no correlation between age of onset, family history and abnormalities at interictal EEG. Statistically significant differences were observed with regard to the number of AEDs used and intellectual disability. Conclusion Typical absence epilepsy classifiable as Childhood Absence Epilepsy could not be considered so “benign”, as suggested in literature. A longer duration of disease and a higher frequency of seizure seem to be correlated with a higher presence of cognitive impairment. Abstract: There are several studies that compared neuropsychological performance of OCD patients with healthy controls. However, there are hardly any studies which have used drug-naïve as well as non-depressed OCD subjects in their studies. The present study compared eighteen drug-naïve non-depressed OCD patients with similar number of age, education and sex matched healthy controls on neuropsychological tests. The tests used are block design, object assembly, Visuospatial Working Memory Test, Verbal Working Memory Test, Complex Figure Test, Stroop Test and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. In addition to usual significance testing, Effect Sizes were calculated. In addition, correlation was done between neuropsychological test variables and clinical variables. The results did not show any significant correlation between any of the clinical variables and neuropsychological test variables. On the other hand, patients showed significant deficits mainly in executive functions and organizational strategy with respect to visuospatial functions. The observed deficits can be attributed to both dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and orbitofrontal cortex involvement. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) has now been studied in different age groups of normal infants and children, and it is clear that it shows dramatic changes with age. In this review we first focus on the important age-related changes of CAP from birth to peripubertal age and, subsequently, we describe the numerous studies on CAP in developmental clinical conditions such as pediatric sleep disordered breathing, disorders of arousal (sleep walking and sleep terror), pediatric narcolepsy, learning disabilities with mental retardation (fragile-X syndrome, Down syndrome, autistic spectrum disorder, Prader-Willi syndrome) or without (dyslexia, Asperger syndrome, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). CAP rate is almost always decreased in these conditions with the exception of the disorders of arousal and some cases of sleep apnea. Another constant result is the reduction of A1 subtypes, probably in relationship with the degree of cognitive impairment. The analysis of CAP in pediatric sleep allows a better understanding of the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms of sleep disturbance. CAP can be considered as a window into pediatric sleep, allowing a new vision on how the sleeping brain is influenced by a specific pathology or how sleep protecting mechanisms try to counteract internal or external disturbing events. Abstract: Corballis [Corballis, M. C. (2009). Comparing a single case with a control sample: Refinements and extensions. Neuropsychologia] offers an interesting position paper on statistical inference in single-case studies. The following points arise: (1) Testing whether we can reject the null hypothesis that a patient''s score is an observation from the population of control scores can be a legitimate aim for single-case researchers, not just clinicians. (2) Counter to the claim made by Corballis [Corballis, M. C. (2009). Comparing a single case with a control sample: Refinements and extensions. Neuropsychologia], Crawford and Howell''s [Crawford, J. R., & Howell, D. C. (1998). Comparing an individual''s test score against norms derived from small samples. The Clinical Neuropsychologist, 12, 482–486] method does test whether we can reject the above null hypothesis. (3) In all but the most unusual of circumstances Crawford and Howell''s method can also safely be used to test whether the mean of a notional patient population is lower than that of a control population, should neuropsychologists wish to construe the test in this way. (4) In contrast, the method proposed by Corballis is not legitimate for either of these purposes because it fails to allow for uncertainty over the control mean (as a result Type I errors will not be under control). (5) The use of a mixed ANOVA design to compare a case to controls (with or without the adjustment proposed by Corballis) is beset with problems but these can be overcome using alternative methods. Abstract: Purpose: To characterize the pattern of cognitive deficits in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and interictal (schizophrenia-like) psychosis and to examine the relationship between neuropsychological deficits and Magnetization transfer imaging. Methods: Twenty patients with TLE and interictal psychosis were compared to 20 non-psychotic TLE patients. Patients were matched with respect to premorbid IQ, age and conventional MRI findings. A battery of neuropsychological tests was administered. The neuropsychological tests which showed significant group differences were used for correlational analysis with magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) which provides a quantitative measure of macromolecular structural integrity. Results: Patients with interictal psychosis were significantly more impaired on executive and semantic memory tasks than the non-psychotic TLE group. Vocabulary test scores correlated significantly with MTR reduction in the left fusiform gyrus in the psychotic but not the non-psychotic group. Discussion: In this study, patients with TLE and interictal psychosis were more cognitively impaired than non-psychotic TLE patients. Our findings suggest that the cognitive deterioration in these patients may occur as the illness progresses and the causes for this are probably multifactorial. Abstract: To explore the idea that deficits in source monitoring may underlie positive symptoms of schizophrenia, the current study compared schizophrenic patients'' performance (n=15) on an internal source-monitoring task with that of normal controls (n=15). On the basis of a source-monitoring task in which participants had to recall whether they had verbalized answers or merely thought about these answers, overall source monitoring performance, discrimination index, and response bias were calculated. In addition, participants completed cognitive tests and symptomatology questionnaires. Relative to controls, patients had significantly more difficulties with monitoring their own actions and showed a tendency towards misclassifying imagined thoughts as verbalized thoughts. Source-monitoring performance was related to selective attention, but not to other cognitive domains. No relationship was found between source-monitoring and symptomatology. Failures in internal source monitoring are a prominent feature of schizophrenia, and our results suggest that they form a more enduring characteristic of this disorder than has previously been assumed. Recently, experts have suggested that obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), a highly heterogeneous condition, is actually composed of distinct subtypes. Research to identify specific subtypes of OCD has focused primarily on symptom presentation. Subtype models have been proposed using factor analyses that yield dimensional systems of symptom categories, but not necessarily distinct subtypes. Other empirical work has considered the role of neuropsychological functioning and comorbidity as part of a comprehensive scheme for subtyping OCD. The identified dimensions from all of these studies have implications for the treatment of OCD. In this article, we review the research on subtypes of OCD, focusing on subtype schemes based upon overt symptom presentation and neuropsychological profiles. We also review research pertinent to alternative subtyping schemes, both conceptually and methodologically. The research is critically examined and implications for treatment are discussed. Neuropsychological deficits were investigated with respect to regional distribution of cerebral atrophy as assessed by volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 50 patients with Alzheimer''s dementia (AD; NINCDS-ADRDA criteria) and 20 healthy volunteers. When compared between groups, test performance of all investigated neuropsychological domains including declarative memory, language, praxia, psychomotor speed, as well as attention and concentration was significantly impaired. These deficits were differentially correlated with regional atrophic changes. In particular, volumes of the right amygdala–hippocampus complex correlated with declarative memory performance, whereas volumes of the left temporo-parietal regions correlated with performance in naming and praxia. Furthermore, left frontal lobe atrophy was associated with verbal fluency. Our data confirm the central role that medial temporal atrophy plays for declarative memory deficits in AD and indicate that additional changes in the parietal, temporal and frontal lobes are responsible for further neuropsychological deficits characteristic of this disorder. The existing literature examining neuropsychological features of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is reviewed. The accumulated research points to a deficit in organizational strategies in general, suggesting problems in executive functioning. The available research is inconsistent in identifying memory deficits in OCD. However, memory problems are most evident when tests are used that require an implicit organizational strategy. While the majority of the research reviewed involves adult samples, there is emerging evidence that these deficits are present in children as well. It is suggested here that the interaction between organizational strategy deficits and the effort to recall unstructured information contributes to doubting, an important feature of OCD. Objectives: Contrary to event-related potential (ERP) components N1, N2 and P3, slow ERPs have rarely been used in assessing cerebral dysfunction in mental disorders. Focussing on slow waves (SWs) and on patients with mild cerebral dysfunction, we recorded ERPs in alcoholics using a dual task design.Methods: ERPs to auditory probes presented either 1 s before the warning or 1 s before the imperative stimulus of a visual contingent negative variation (CNV) paradigm were recorded from 33 scalp electrodes in 27 alcoholics following detoxification and 12 healthy controls. Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to separate potentially overlapping spatial components.Results: In alcoholics compared to controls, probe ERPs showed increased N2, decreased P3 and increased negative SWs of two types appearing pre- and post-P3, respectively. Both negative SWs significantly correlated with neuropsychological indices reflecting verbal intelligence and memory functions. The increase in probe-evoked N1 and P3 potentials during CNV, putatively associated with enhanced cortical excitability, significantly correlated with clinical features of protracted alcohol withdrawal syndrome in alcoholics.Conclusions: Our experimental approach revealed two types of negative SWs which strongly correlated with neuropsychological deficits of mildly impaired patients. It is suggested that our methods might enhance diagnostic efficiency of ERPs. An electrophysiological measure of protracted alcohol withdrawal might be useful for managing central nervous system dysfunction in alcoholics. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Subjective and objective cognitive functions show stability during CBT. • Subjective cognitive deficits seem to be an indicator for the depressive state of patients rather than for their cognitive performance. • The results highlight the importance of using both subjective and objective test methods. The aim of the study was to investigate changes in both subjectively and objectively measured cognitive functions as well as their discrepancy in outpatients with major depression disorder in the course of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). A neuropsychological test battery with cognitive tests measuring the domains of attention, memory, and executive functions as well as a questionnaire for the self-assessment of cognitive functions (FLei) in these domains were administered to depressed outpatients (n = 46) at the beginning of CBT, post-treatment after on average 40 sessions, as well as six months after the end of treatment. We found that subjectively as well as objectively measured cognitive functions did not change. The discrepancy between subjective and objective cognitive functions found at the beginning of therapy was no longer significant at post-treatment and six months later. The results indicate, that self-perceived and neuropsychologically measured cognitive impairments show stability despite improved depression. Specific interventions such as cognitive remediation therapy should be additionally applied to depressed patients who suffer from cognitive deficits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
