In this paper, we study the deflection of light by a class of phantom black hole and wormhole solutions in the weak limit approximation. More specifically, in the first part of this work, we study the deflection of light by Garfinkle-Horowitz-Str\"{o}minger black hole and Einstein-Maxwell anti-dilaton black hole using the optical geometry and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Our calculations show that gravitational lensing is affected by the phantom scalar field (phantom dilaton). In the second part of this work, we explore the deflection of light by a class of asymptotically flat phantom wormholes. In particular, we have used three types of wormholes: wormhole with a bounded/unbounded mass function, and a wormhole with a vanishing redshift function. We show that the particular choice of the shape function and mass function plays a crucial role in the final expression for the deflection angle of light. In the third part of the paper, we verify our findings with the help of standard geodesics equations. Finally, in the fourth part of this paper, we consider the problem for the observational relevance of our results studying the creation of the weak field Einstein rings., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

Following the detection of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos in 2013, their origin is still unknown. Aiming for the identification of an electromagnetic counterpart of a rapidly fading source, we have implemented a realtime analysis framework for the IceCube neutrino observatory. Several analyses selecting neutrinos of astrophysical origin are now operating in realtime at the detector site in Antarctica and are producing alerts to the community to enable rapid follow-up observations. The goal of these observations is to locate the astrophysical objects responsible for these neutrino signals. This paper highlights the infrastructure in place both at the South Pole detector site and at IceCube facilities in the north that have enabled this fast follow-up program to be developed. Additionally, this paper presents the first realtime analyses to be activated within this framework, highlights their sensitivities to astrophysical neutrinos and background event rates, and presents an outlook for future discoveries., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures, Published in Astroparticle Physics

The relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) set of equations has recently seen increased use in astrophysical computations. Even so, RMHD codes remain fragile. The reconstruction can sometimes yield superluminal velocities in certain parts of the mesh. In this paper we present a reconstruction strategy that overcomes this problem by making a single conservative to primitive transformation per cell followed by higher order WENO reconstruction on a carefully chosen set of primitives that guarantee subluminal reconstruction of the flow variables. For temporal evolution via a predictor step we also present second, third and fourth order accurate ADER methods that keep the velocity subluminal during the predictor step. The RMHD system also requires the magnetic field to be evolved in a divergence-free fashion. In the treatment of classical numerical MHD the analogous issue has seen much recent progress with the advent of multidimensional Riemann solvers. By developing multidimensional Riemann solvers for RMHD, we show that similar advances extend to RMHD. As a result, the face-centered magnetic fields can be evolved much more accurately using the edge-centered electric fields in the corrector step. Those edge-centered electric fields come from a multidimensional Riemann solver for RMHD which we present in this paper. In this paper we also develop several new test problems for RMHD. We show that RMHD vortices can be designed that propagate on the computational mesh as self-preserving structures. These RMHD vortex test problems provide a means to do truly multidimensional accuracy testing for RMHD codes. Several other stringent test problems are presented. We show the importance of resolution in certain test problems. In this paper, we studied the ``hyperon puzzle", a problem that nevertheless the large number of studies is still an open problem. The solution of this issue requires one or more mechanisms that could eventually provide the additional repulsion needed to make the EoS stiffer and, therefore, the value of $M_{\rm{max}, T}$ compatible with the current observational limits. In this paper we proposed that including dark matter (DM) admixed with ordinary matter in neutron stars (NSs), change the hydrostatic equilibrium and may explain the observed discrepancies, regardless to hyperon multi-body interactions, which seem to be unavoidable. We have studied how non-self-annihilating, and self-interacting, DM admixed with ordinary matter in NSs changes their inner structure, and discussed the mass-radius relations of such NSs. We considered DM particle masses of 1, 10, and 100 GeV, while taking into account a rich list of the DM interacting strengths, $y$. By analyzing the multidimensional parameter space, including several quantities like: a. the DM interacting strength, b. the DM particle mass as well as the quantity of DM in its interior, and c. the DM fraction, ${\rm f}_{DM}$, we put constraints in the parameter space ${\rm f}_{DM} - p^{\prime}_{\rm DM}/p^{\prime}_{\rm OM}$. The unique capabilities of Swift that make it ideal for discovery and follow-up of Gamma-Ray bursts also makes it the idea mission for discovery and monitoring of X-ray Transients in the Milky Way and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The Burst Alert Telescope allows for detection of new transient outbursts, the automated follow-up capabilities of Swift allow for rapid observation and localization of the new transient in X-rays and optical/UV bands, and Swift's rapid slewing capabilities allows for low-overhead short observations to be obtained, opening up the possibility of regular, sensitive, long term monitoring of transient outbursts that are not possible with other currently operational X-ray missions. In this paper I describe the methods of discovery of X-ray transients utilizing Swift's BAT and also collaboration with the MAXI telescope. I also detail two examples of X-ray transient science enabled by Swift: Swift discovery and monitoring observations of MAXI J1659-152, a Black Hole candidate Low Mass X-ray Binary in the Galactic Halo, which has the shortest known orbital period of any such system; and Swift monitoring of IGR J00569-7226, an edge on Be/X-ray binary that displayed a outburst in 2013 and 2014, and which monitoring by Swift allowed for detection of dips, eclipses and the determination of the orbital parameters, utilizing a measurement of doppler shifts in the pulsar period., 8 pages, 7 figures. Understanding effects of ionisation in the lower atmosphere is a new interdisciplinary area, crossing traditionally distinct scientific boundaries. Following the paper of Erlykin et al. (Astropart. Phys. 57--58 (2014) 26--29) we develop the interpretation of observed changes in long-wave (LW) radiation (Aplin and Lockwood, Env. Res. Letts. 8, 015026 (2013)), by taking account of cosmic ray ionisation yields and atmospheric radiative transfer. To demonstrate this, we show that the thermal structure of the whole atmosphere needs to be considered along with the vertical profile of ionisation. Allowing for ionisation by all components of a cosmic ray shower and not just by the muons, reveals that the effect we have detected is certainly not inconsistent with laboratory observations of the LW absorption cross section. The analysis presented here, although very different from that of Erlykin et al., does come to the same conclusion that the events detected were not caused by individual cosmic ray primaries -- not because it is impossible on energetic grounds, but because events of the required energy are too infrequent for the 12/hr rate at which they were seen by the AL experiment. The present paper numerically models the effect of three different scenario changes to the primary GCR spectrum which all reproduce the required magnitude of the observed effect. However, they cannot solely explain the observed delay in the peak effect which, if confirmed, would appear to open up a whole new and interesting area in the study of water oligomers and their effects on LW radiation. We argue that a technical artefact in the earlier experiment is highly unlikely and that our initial observations merit both follow-up experiments and more rigorous, self-consistent, three-dimensional radiative transfer modelling., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

In this paper, we present high-energy neutrino spectra from 21 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs), derived from gamma-ray measurements in the GeV-TeV range. We find that only the strongest sources, i.e. G40.5-0.5 in the north and Vela Junior in the south could be detected as single point sources by IceCube or KM3NeT, respectively. For the first time, it is also possible to derive a diffuse signal by applying the observed correlation between gamma-ray emission and radio signal. Radio data from 234 supernova remnants listed in Green's catalog are used to show that the total diffuse neutrino flux is approximately a factor of 2.5 higher compared to the sources that are resolved so far. We show that the signal at above 10 TeV energies can actually become comparable to the diffuse neutrino flux component from interactions in the interstellar medium. Recently, the IceCube collaboration announced the detection of a first diffuse signal of astrophysical high-energy neutrinos. Directional information cannot unambiguously reveal the nature of the sources at this point due to low statistics. A number of events come from close to the Galactic center and one of the main questions is whether at least a part of the signal can be of Galactic nature. A new water-Cherenkov radiation detector, located at the Argentine Marambio Antarctic Base (64.24S-56.62W), has been monitoring the variability of galactic cosmic ray (GCR) flux since 2019. One of the main aims is to provide experimental data necessary to study interplanetary transport of GCRs during transient events at different space/time scales. In this paper we present the detector and analyze observations made during one full year. After the analysis and correction of the GCR flux variability due to the atmospheric conditions (pressure and temperature), a study of the periodicities is performed in order to analyze modulations due to heliospheric phenomena. We can observe two periods: (a) 1 day, associated with the Earth's rotation combined with the spatial anisotropy of the GCR flux; and (b) $\sim$ 30 days due to solar impact of stable solar structures combined with the rotation of the Sun. From a superposed epoch analysis, and considering the geomagnetic effects, the mean diurnal amplitude is $\sim$ 0.08% and the maximum flux is observed in $\sim$ 15 hr local time (LT) direction in the interplanetary space. In such a way, we determine the capability of Neurus to observe anisotropies and other interplanetary modulations on the GCR flux arriving at the Earth., Comment: to be published in Advances in Space Research

MAXI J1421-613 is an X-ray burster discovered by Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) on 9 January 2014 and is considered to be a low-mass X-ray binary. A previous study analyzing follow-up observation data obtained by Suzaku on 31 January to 3 February 2014 reported that an annular emission of ~3'-9' radius was found around the transient source. The most plausible origin of the annular emission is a dust scattering echo by the outburst of MAXI J1421-613. In this paper, we confirm the annular emission by analyzing the data of the Swift follow-up observation which was conducted by the photon counting mode on 18 January 2014. In a radial profile, we found an annular emission at ~2'.5-4'.5. Its spectrum was well explained by an absorbed power law, and the photon index was higher than that of MAXI J1421-613 itself by delta Gamma~2. The flux and radius of the annular emission observed by Swift are explained by dust scattering of the same outburst as is responsible for the annular emission observed by Suzaku. Assuming that the dust layer causing the annular emission found by Swift is located at the same position as the CO cloud in front of MAXI J1421-613, the distance to the transient source was estimated to be ~3 kpc, which is consistent with the value estimated by the previous study of Suzaku., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research

Sokolsky and D_Avignon have recently reported an examination of a variety of measurements that relate to the question as to how the mass composition of the highest-energy cosmic-rays evolves with energy. They assert that cosmic rays arriving from the Northern Hemisphere have a different mass composition from those arriving from the Southern Hemisphere, implying a diversity of sources of high-energy cosmic-rays in the two hemispheres. Were this conclusion to be correct, it would have profound implications for theories of cosmic-ray origin and would influence planning of future projects. Their claim thus merits careful scrutiny. In this paper their analysis is examined in detail with the verdict being that evidence for a North/South difference is not proven, a conclusion supported by other data from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. However, what is of major importance is that the study of Sokolsky and D_Avignon provides long-awaited confirmation of the claim that the mean mass of cosmic rays increases with energy above ~3 E eV made by the Pierre Auger Collaboration in 2014., 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Primordial black holes are under intense scrutiny since the detection of gravitational waves from mergers of solar-mass black holes in 2015. More recently, the development of numerical tools and the precision observational data have rekindled the effort to constrain the black hole abundance in the lower mass range, that is $M < 10^{23}$g. In particular, primordial black holes of asteroid mass $M \sim 10^{17}-10^{23}\,$g may represent 100\% of dark matter. While the microlensing and stellar disruption constraints on their abundance have been relieved, Hawking radiation of these black holes seems to be the only detection (and constraining) mean. Hawking radiation constraints on primordial black holes date back to the first papers by Hawking. Black holes evaporating in the early universe may have generated the baryon asymmetry, modified big bang nucleosynthesis, distorted the cosmic microwave background, or produced cosmological backgrounds of stable particles such as photons and neutrinos. At the end of their lifetime, exploding primordial black holes would produce high energy cosmic rays that would provide invaluable access to the physics at energies up to the Planck scale. In this review, we describe the main principles of Hawking radiation, which lie at the border of general relativity, quantum mechanics and statistical physics. We then present an up-to-date status of the different constraints on primordial black holes that rely on the evaporation phenomenon, and give, where relevant, prospects for future work. The collection of a statistically significant number detected of cosmic rays with energy above $10^{17}$ to $10^{18}$ eV requires widely-spaced particle detectors at the ground level to detect the extensive air showers induced in the atmosphere. The air-shower sizes, proxies of the primary energies, are then estimated by fitting the observed signals to a functional form for expectations so as to interpolate the signal at a reference distance. The functional form describes the rapid falloff of the expected signal with the distance from the shower core, using typically two logarithmic slopes to account for the short-range and long-range decreases of signals. The uncertainties associated to the air-shower sizes are determined under the assumption of a quadratic dependence of the log-likelihood on the fitted parameters around the minimum, so that a meaningful variance-covariance matrix is provided. In this paper, we show that for an event topology where one signal is much larger than the others, the quadratic dependence of the fitted function around the minimum is a poor approximation that leads to an inaccurate estimate of the uncertainties. To restore a quadratic shape, we propose to use the polar coordinates around the detector recording the largest signal, projected onto the plane of the shower front, to define the likelihood function in terms of logarithmic polar distances, polar angles and logarithmic shower sizes as free parameters. We show that a meaningful variance-covariance matrix is then recovered in the new coordinate system, as the dependence of the fitted function on the modified parameters is properly approximated by a quadratic function. In this paper, we show that the holographic dark energy density hides in the solutions of Lovelock gravity for black holes. Using the obtained mass and temperature we find density equations. We propose a physical interpretation of the rescaled Lovelock couplings as a topological mass that describes the Lovelock branch. In addition to this, we present new solutions that satisfy the energy conditions according to the Lovelock coupling and the horizon curvatures. This work can be extended to the equation of the state {\omega}_{{\Lambda}} of dark energy in third-order Lovelock gravity. A compact device lifted over the ground surface might be used to observe optical radiation of extensive air showers (EAS). Here we consider spatial and temporal characteristics of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation ("Cherenkov light") reflected from the snow surface of Lake Baikal, as registered by the SPHERE-2 detector. We perform detailed full direct Monte Carlo simulations of EAS development and present a dedicated highly modular code intended for detector response simulations. Detector response properties are illustrated by example of several model EAS events. The instrumental acceptance of the SPHERE-2 detector was calculated for a range of observation conditions. We introduce the concept of "composite model quantities", calculated for detector responses averaged over photoelectron count fluctuations, but retaining EAS development fluctuations. The distortions of EAS Cherenkov light lateral distribution function (LDF) introduced by the SPHERE-2 telescope are understood by comparing composite model LDF with the corresponding function as would be recorded by an ideal detector situated at the ground surface. We show that the uncertainty of snow optical properties does not change our conclusions, and, moreover, that the expected performance of the SPHERE experiment in the task of cosmic ray mass composition study in the energy region $\sim$10 PeV is comparable with other contemporary experiments. The detection of stochastic background of gravitational waves (GWs), produced by cosmological phase transitions (PTs), is of fundamental importance because allows to probe the physics related to PT energy scales. Motivated by the decisive role of non-zero quark chemical potential towards understanding physics in the core of neutron stars, quark stars and heavy-ion collisions, in this paper we qualitatively explore the stochastic background of GW spectrum generated by a cosmological source such as high-density QCD first order PT during the early Universe. Specifically, we calculate the frequency peak $f_{peak}$ redshifted at today time and the fractional energy density $\Omega_{gw}h^2$ in light of equation-of-state improved by the finite quark (baryon) chemical potential (we consider an effective three flavor chiral quarks model of QCD). Our calculations reveal a striking increase in $f_{peak}$ and $\Omega_{gw}h^2$ due to the quark chemical potential, which means to improve the chances of detection, in possible future observations (in particular SKA/PTA experiments), of the stochastic background of GWs from QCD first order PT. Even if the improvements could be weak, by updating the sensitivity of relevant detectors in the future, we can still remain hopeful. Concerning the phenomenological contribution of QCD equation-of-state, and in particular the possibility to detect a stochastic GW signal, we further show that the role of the quark chemical potential is model-dependent. This feature allows to discriminate among possible QCD effective models depending on their capability to shed light on the dynamic of QCD-PT through future observations of primordial GWs. Flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) is the most luminous blazar at the GeV energies. In this paper, we probe the photon-axion-like particle (ALP) oscillation effect on the latest very-high-energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray observations of the FSRQ 4C+21.35 (PKS 1222+216). The $\gamma$-ray spectra are measured by the collaborations Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes (MAGIC), Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS), and Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT), which cover two activity VHE flares of 4C+21.35 in 2010 and 2014. We show the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these two phases under the null and ALP hypotheses, and set the combined limit on the ALP parameter space. The 95% $\rm C.L.$ combined limit set by the FSRQ 4C+21.35 observations measured by MAGIC, VERITAS, and Fermi-LAT in the $m_a-g_{a\gamma}$ plane is roughly at the photon-ALP coupling $g_{a\gamma} \gtrsim 8\times 10^{-12} \rm \, GeV^{-1}$ for the ALP mass $[\,2\times 10^{-10}\, {\rm eV} \lesssim m_a \lesssim 2\times 10^{-8}\, \rm eV\,]$. Compared with the constraint of NGC 1275 set by Fermi-LAT, no stringent limit result is derived with the photon-ALP coupling $g_{a\gamma}$ from the FSRQ 4C+21.35, while this result could slightly broaden the ALP mass $m_a$ limit at the low-mass region., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. A generalized fluid-particle hybrid model for collisionless plasmas under the assumption of quasi-neutrality is presented. The system consists of fluid ions and electrons as well as arbitrary numbers of species whose dynamics is governed by the Vlasov equation. The proposed model is thus a generalized version of the well-known standard hybrid plasma simulation model, in which the ions are fully kinetic whereas the electrons are assumed to be a fluid. Since the proposed model employs the exact form of the generalized Ohm's law, the mass and energy densities, as well as the charge-to-mass ratio of the kinetic species, are taken to be arbitrary. In the absence of the kinetic species, it reduces to the quasi-neutral two-fluid model (Amano, 2015, JCP). In the opposite situation where the mass and energy densities of the kinetic species are much larger than the fluid ions, it is nothing more than the standard hybrid model with finite electron inertia effect. If the kinetic species is an energetic particle (EP) population having negligible mass density but substantial energy density and the scale size is much larger than the ion and electron inertial lengths, it describes the self-consistent coupling between the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and the EP dynamics. The energetic-particle-magnetohydrodynamics (EP-MHD) hybrid model is thus a special case of the more general model described in this paper. Advantages of this approach over the existing models are discussed. A three-dimensional simulation code solving the proposed set of equations is described. The code combines the Particle-in-Cell scheme for solving the kinetic species and a Riemann-solver-based code for the two-fluid equations. Information on cosmic-ray (CR) composition comes from direct CR measurements while their distribution in the Galaxy is evaluated from observations of their associated diffuse emission in the range from radio to gamma rays. Even though the main interaction processes are identified, more and more precise observations provide an opportunity to study more subtle effects and pose a challenge to the propagation models. GALPROP is a sophisticated CR propagation code that is being developed for about 20 years. It provides a unified framework for interpretations of data from many different types of experiments. It is used for a description of direct CR measurements and associated interstellar emissions (radio to gamma rays), thereby providing important information about CR injection and propagation in the interstellar medium. By accounting for all relevant observables at a time, the GALPROP code brings together theoretical predictions, interpretation of the most recent observations, and helps to reveal the signatures of new phenomena. In this paper we review latest applications of GALPROP and address ongoing and near future improvements. The High-Energy Lightcurve Generator (HILIGT) is a new web-based tool which allows the user to generate long-term lightcurves of X-ray sources. It provides historical data and calculates upper limits from image data in real-time. HILIGT utilizes data from twelve satellites, both modern missions such as XMM-Newton and Swift, and earlier facilities such as ROSAT, EXOSAT, Einstein or Ariel V. Together, this enables the user to query 50 years of X-ray data and, for instance, study outburst behavior of transient sources. In this paper we focus on the individual back-end servers for each satellite, detailing the software layout, database design, catalog calls, and image footprints. We compile all relevant calibration information of these missions and provide an in-depth summary of the details of X-ray astronomical instrumentation and data., Accepted for publication in Astronomy&Computing

The production spectrum of high-energy muons as a function of depth in the atmosphere is relevant for understanding properties of event rates in deep detectors. For a given atmospheric profile, cascades of heavy nuclei develop at higher altitude than proton showers, giving rise to larger separation of muons at depth. For a given type of primary cosmic ray, seasonal variations in muon rates reflect the fact that higher temperatures correspond to lower densities and to a relative increase in the ratio of decay to re-interaction of the parent mesons. In this paper, we present a generalization of the Elbert formula that tracks meson decay to muons along the trajectory of the primary cosmic-ray nucleus. The convolution of the production spectrum with a changing atmospheric profile provides the dependence of event rates and sizes of muon bundles on temperature and primary mass. We consider applications to IceCube and also to multiple muon events in the compact underground detectors of MINOS and the NOvA Near Detector., 22 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. In this paper, we study the polarization of a gravitational wave (GW) emitted by an astrophysical source at a cosmic distance propagating through the Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walk universe. By considering the null geodesic deviations, we first provide a definition of the polarization of the GW in terms of the Weyl scalars with respect to a parallelly-transported frame along the null geodesics, and then show explicitly that, due to different effects of the expansion of the universe on the two polarization modes, the so-called "+" and "$\times$" modes, the polarization angle of the GW changes generically, when it is propagating through the curved background. By direct computations of the polarization angle, we show that different epochs, radiation-, matter- and $\Lambda$-dominated, have different effects on the polarization. In particular, for a GW emitted by a binary system, we find explicitly the relation between the change of the polarization angle $|\Delta \varphi|$ and the redshift $z_s$ of the source in different epochs. Single-stage or single-step high-order temporal discretizations of partial differential equations (PDEs) have shown great promise in delivering high-order accuracy in time with efficient use of computational resources. There has been much success in developing such methods for finite volume method (FVM) discretizations of PDEs. The Picard Integral formulation (PIF) has recently made such single-stage temporal methods accessible for finite difference method (FDM) discretizations. PIF methods rely on the so-called Lax-Wendroff procedures to tightly couple spatial and temporal derivatives through the governing PDE system to construct high-order Taylor series expansions in time. Going to higher than third order in time requires the calculation of Jacobian-like derivative tensor-vector contractions of an increasingly larger degree, greatly adding to the complexity of such schemes. To that end, we present in this paper a method for calculating these tensor contractions through a recursive application of a discrete Jacobian operator that readily and efficiently computes the needed contractions entirely agnostic of the system of partial differential equations (PDEs) being solved.

The polytropic hydrodynamic vortex describes an effective $(2+1)$-dimensional acoustic spacetime with an inner reflecting boundary at $r=r_{\text{c}}$. This physical system, like the spinning Kerr black hole, possesses an ergoregion of radius $r_{\text{e}}$ and an inner non-pointlike curvature singularity of radius $r_{\text{s}}$. Interestingly, the fundamental ratio $r_{\text{e}}/r_{\text{s}}$ which characterizes the effective geometry is determined solely by the dimensionless polytropic index $N_{\text{p}}$ of the circulating fluid. It has recently been proved that, in the $N_{\text{p}}=0$ case, the effective acoustic spacetime is characterized by an {\it infinite} countable set of reflecting surface radii, $\{r_{\text{c}}(N_{\text{p}};n)\}^{n=\infty}_{n=1}$, that can support static (marginally-stable) sound modes. In the present paper we use {\it analytical} techniques in order to explore the physical properties of the polytropic hydrodynamic vortex in the $N_{\text{p}}>0$ regime. In particular, we prove that in this physical regime, the effective acoustic spacetime is characterized by a {\it finite} discrete set of reflecting surface radii, $\{r_{\text{c}}(N_{\text{p}},m;n)\}^{n=N_{\text{max}}}_{n=1}$, that can support the marginally-stable static sound modes (here $m$ is the azimuthal harmonic index of the acoustic perturbation field). Interestingly, it is proved analytically that the dimensionless outermost supporting radius $r^{\text{max}}_{\text{c}}/r_{\text{e}}$, which marks the onset of superradiant instabilities in the polytropic hydrodynamic vortex, increases monotonically with increasing values of the integer harmonic index $m$ and decreasing values of the dimensionless polytropic index $N_{\text{p}}$., 13 pages

Non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) affect both their propagation through matter and their detection, with bounds on NSI parameters coming from various astrophysical and terrestrial neutrino experiments. In this paper, we show that NSI can be probed in future direct dark matter detection experiments through both elastic neutrino-electron scattering and coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering, and that these channels provide complementary probes of NSI. We show NSI can increase the event rate due to solar neutrinos, with a sharp increase for lower nuclear recoil energy thresholds that are within reach for upcoming detectors. We also identify an interference range of NSI parameters for which the rate is reduced by approximately 40\%. Finally, we show that the "dark side" solution for the solar neutrino mixing angle may be discovered at forthcoming direct detection experiments., 12 pages, 5 figures

Recently, the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) reported two new interesting results for a gamma-ray emitting supernova remnant, RX J1713.7-3946 (G347.3-0.5). The first result is the establishment of a broken power-law spectrum of GeV-TeV gamma-rays. The other is a more extended gamma-ray spatial profile than the one in the X-ray band. In this paper, we show both of these results can be explained by inverse Compton emission from accelerated electrons. If the maximum energy of electrons being accelerated decreases with time, the broken power-law spectrum can be generated by accumulation. IceCube observed high-energy neutrino flux in the energy region from TeV to PeV. The decay of a massive long-lived particle in the early universe can be the origin of the IceCube neutrino events, which we call an "early decay scenario." In this paper, we construct a particle physics model that contains such a massive long-lived particle based on the Peccei-Quinn model. We calculate the present neutrino flux, taking account of realistic initial energy distributions of particles produced by the decay of the massive long-lived particle. We show that the early decay scenario naturally fits into the Peccei-Quinn model, and that the neutrino flux observed by IceCube can be explained in such a framework. The field of gamma-ray astronomy has experienced impressive progress over the last decade. Thanks to the advent of a new generation of imaging air Cherenkov telescopes (H.E.S.S., MAGIC, VERITAS) and thanks to the launch of the Fermi-LAT satellite, several thousand gamma-ray sources are known today, revealing an unexpected ubiquity of particle acceleration processes in the Universe. Major scientific challenges are still ahead, such as the identification of the nature of Dark Matter, the discovery and understanding of the sources of cosmic rays, or the comprehension of the particle acceleration processes that are at work in the various objects. It has recently been shown that the Hawking evaporation process of $(3+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes is characterized by the dimensionless ratio $\eta\equiv\tau_{\text{gap}}/\tau_{\text{emission}}\gg1$, where $\tau_{\text{gap}}$ is the characteristic time gap between the emissions of successive Hawking quanta and $\tau_{\text{emission}}$ is the characteristic timescale required for an individual Hawking quantum to be emitted from the Schwarzschild black hole. This strong inequality implies that the Hawking cascade of gravitons from a $(3+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole is extremely {\it sparse}. In the present paper we explore the semi-classical Hawking evaporation rates of {\it higher}-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. We find that the dimensionless ratio $\eta(D)\equiv{{\tau_{\text{gap}}}/{\tau_{\text{emission}}}}$, which characterizes the Hawking emission of gravitons from the $(D+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes, is a {\it decreasing} function of the spacetime dimension. The well-known superradiant amplification mechanism allows a charged scalar field of proper mass $\mu$ and electric charge $q$ to extract the Coulomb energy of a charged Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole. The rate of energy extraction can grow exponentially in time if the system is placed inside a reflecting cavity which prevents the charged scalar field from escaping to infinity. This composed black-hole-charged-scalar-field-mirror system is known as the {\it charged black-hole bomb}. Previous numerical studies of this composed physical system have shown that, in the linearized regime, the inequality $q/\mu>1$ provides a necessary condition for the development of the superradiant instability. In the present paper we use analytical techniques to study the instability properties of the charged black-hole bomb in the regime of linearized scalar fields. In particular, we prove that the lower bound ${{q}\over{\mu}}>\sqrt{{{r_{\text{m}}/r_--1}\over{r_{\text{m}}/r_+-1}}}$ provides a necessary condition for the development of the superradiant instability in this composed physical system (here $r_{\pm}$ are the horizon radii of the charged Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole and $r_{\text{m}}$ is the radius of the confining mirror). This {\it analytically} derived lower bound on the superradiant instability regime of the composed black-hole-charged-scalar-field-mirror system is shown to agree with direct {\it numerical} computations of the instability spectrum., Comment: 9 pages

Comparing the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$ values for different types of particles, or the same type of particles with different energies is an important method to test the Einstein Equivalence Principle (EEP). Assuming that the observed time delays are dominated by the gravitational potential of the Laniakea supercluster of galaxies, better results of EEP constraints can be obtained. In this paper, we apply photons from three kinds of cosmic transients, including TeV blazars, gamma-ray bursts as well as fast radio bursts to constrain EEP. The WT scheme, a piecewise polynomial force interpolation scheme with time-step dependency, is proposed in this paper for relativistic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The WT scheme removes the lowest order numerical Cherenkov instability (NCI) growth rate for arbitrary time steps allowed by the Courant condition. While NCI from higher order resonances is still present, the numerical tests show that for smaller time steps, the numerical instability grows much slower than using the optimal time step found in previous studies. Precision measurements of charged cosmic rays have recently been carried out by space-born (e.g. AMS-02), or ground experiments (e.g. HESS). These measured data are important for the studies of astro-physical phenomena, including supernova remnants, cosmic ray propagation, solar physics and dark matter. Those scenarios usually contain a number of free parameters that need to be adjusted by observed data. Some techniques, such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo and MultiNest, are developed in order to solve the above problem. However, it is usually required a computing farm to apply those tools. In this paper, a genetic algorithm for finding the optimum parameters for cosmic ray injection and propagation is presented. We find that this algorithm gives us the same best fit results as the Markov Chain Monte Carlo but consuming less computing power by nearly 2 orders of magnitudes., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, to appear in Computer Physics Communications

Hubble Space Telescope observations show bright knots of H$\alpha$ emission within outflowing young stellar jets. Velocity variations in the flow create secondary bow shocks that may intersect and lead to enhanced emission. When the bow shocks intersect at or above a certain critical angle, a planar shock called a Mach stem is formed. These shocks could produce brighter H$\alpha$ emission since the incoming flow to the Mach stem is parallel to the shock normal. In this paper we report first results of a study using 2-D numerical simulations designed to explore Mach stem formation at the intersection of bow shocks formed by hypersonic "bullets" or "clumps". Our 2-D simulations show how the bow shock shapes and intersection angles change as the adiabatic index $\gamma$ changes. We show that the formation or lack of a Mach stem in our simulations is consistent with the steady-state Mach stem formation theory. Our ultimate goal, which is part of an ongoing research effort, is to characterize the physical and observational consequences of bow shock intersections including the formation of Mach stems.

Variability classes in the enigmatic black hole candidate GRS 1915+105 are known to be correlated with the variation of the Comptonizing Efficiency (CE) which is defined to be the ratio between the number of power-law (hard) photons and seed (soft) photons injected into the Compton cloud. Similarities of light curves of several variability classes of GRS 1915+105 and IGR 17091-3624, some of which are already reported in the literature, motivated us to compute CE for IGR 17091-3624 as well. We find that they are similar to what were reported earlier for GRS 1915+105, even though masses of these objects could be different. The reason is that the both the sizes of the sources of the seed photons and of the Comptonizing corona scale in the same way as the mass of the black hole. Rotating black holes can support quasi-stationary (unstable) bound-state resonances of massive scalar fields in their exterior regions. These spatially regular scalar configurations are characterized by instability timescales which are much longer than the timescale $M$ set by the geometric size (mass) of the central black hole. It is well-known that, in the small-mass limit $\alpha\equiv M\mu\ll1$ (here $\mu$ is the mass of the scalar field), these quasi-stationary scalar resonances are characterized by the familiar hydrogenic oscillation spectrum: $\omega_{\text{R}}/\mu=1-\alpha^2/2{\bar n}^2_0$, where the integer $\bar n_0(l,n;\alpha\to0)=l+n+1$ is the principal quantum number of the bound-state resonance (here the integers $l=1,2,3,...$ and $n=0,1,2,...$ are the spheroidal harmonic index and the resonance parameter of the field mode, respectively). As it depends only on the principal resonance parameter $\bar n_0$, this small-mass ($\alpha\ll1$) hydrogenic spectrum is obviously degenerate. In this paper we go beyond the small-mass approximation and analyze the quasi-stationary bound-state resonances of massive scalar fields in rapidly-spinning Kerr black-hole spacetimes in the regime $\alpha=O(1)$. In particular, we derive the non-hydrogenic (and, in general, non-degenerate) resonance oscillation spectrum ${{\omega_{\text{R}}}/{\mu}}=\sqrt{1-(\alpha/{\bar n})^2}$, where $\bar n(l,n;\alpha)=\sqrt{(l+1/2)^2-2m\alpha+2\alpha^2}+1/2+n$ is the generalized principal quantum number of the quasi-stationary resonances. This analytically derived formula for the characteristic oscillation frequencies of the composed black-hole-massive-scalar-field system is shown to agree with direct numerical computations of the quasi-stationary bound-state resonances., Comment: 7 pages

Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs) are HMXBs with OB supergiant companions. I review the results of the Swift SFXT Project, which since 2007 has been exploiting Swift's capabilities in a systematic study of SFXTs and supergiant X-ray binaries (SGXBs) by combining follow-ups of outbursts, when detailed broad-band spectroscopy is possible, with long-term monitoring campaigns, when the out-of-outburst fainter states can be observed. This strategy has led us to measure their duty cycles as a function of luminosity, to extract their differential luminosity distributions in the soft X-ray domain, and to compare, with unprecedented detail, the X-ray variability in these different classes of sources. I also discuss the "seventh year crisis", the challenges that the recent Swift observations are making to the prevailing models attempting to explain the SFXT behaviour., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Non extensive statistical physics has been applied to various problems in physics including astrophysics. In this paper we explore the possibility of using non extensive approach to explain the recently observed pulsed $\gamma$-ray from Crab pulsar above 100 GeV observed by VERITAS $\gamma$-ray telescope.

Cherenkov telescopes have the capability of detecting high energy tau neutrinos in the energy range of 1--1000 PeV by searching for very inclined showers. If a tau lepton, produced by a tau neutrino, escapes from the Earth or a mountain, it will decay and initiate a shower in the air which can be detected by an air shower fluorescence or Cherenkov telescope. In this paper, we present detailed Monte Carlo simulations of corresponding event rates for the VERITAS and two proposed Cherenkov Telescope Array sites: Meteor Crater and Yavapai Ranch, which use representative AGN neutrino flux models and take into account topographic conditions of the detector sites. The calculated neutrino sensitivities depend on the observation time and the shape of the energy spectrum, but in some cases are comparable or even better than corresponding neutrino sensitivities of the IceCube detector. For VERITAS and the considered Cherenkov Telescope Array sites the expected neutrino sensitivities are up to factor 3 higher than for the MAGIC site because of the presence of surrounding mountains., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1308.0194

The existence of the cosmic ray Halo in our Galaxy has been discussed for more than half a century. If it is real it could help to explain some puzzling features of the cosmic ray flux: its small radial gradient, nearly perfect isotropy and the low level of the fine structure in the energy spectra of the various particles. All these features could be understood if: (a) the Halo has a big size (b) cosmic rays in the Halo have a unform spatial distribution and (c) the cosmic ray density in the Halo is comparable or even higher than that in the Galactic Disk. The main topic of the paper concerns the present status of the anisotropy and a model for its formation. In our model the extremely small amplitude of the dipole anisotropy is due to the dilution of the anisotropy in the Disk by the dominating isotropic cosmic rays from the Halo. Some minor deviations from complete isotropy in the sub-PeV and PeV energy regions point out to the possible contribution of the Single Source with the phase of its first harmonic opposite to the phase produced by the Disk., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Astroparticle Physics

Context: Blazars are a remarkable type of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) that are playing an important and rapidly growing role in today’s multi-frequency and multi-messenger astrophysics. In the past several years, blazars have been discovered in relatively large numbers in radio, microwave, X-ray and γ -ray surveys, and more recently have been associated to high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and possibly to ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Blazars are expected to dominate the high-energy extragalactic sky that will soon be surveyed by the new generation of very high-energy γ -ray observatories such as CTA. In parallel to the discovery of many blazars at all frequencies, the technological evolution, together with the increasing adoption of open data policies, is causing an exponential growth of astronomical data that is freely available through the network of Virtual Observatories (VO) and the web in general, providing an unprecedented potential for multi-wavelength and multi-messenger data analysis. Product: We present VOU-Blazars, a tool developed within the Open Universe initiative that has been designed to facilitate the discovery of blazars and build their spectral energy distributions (SED) using public multi-wavelength photometric and spectral data that are accessible through VO services. The tool is available as source code, as a Docker container, and as a web-based service accessible within the Open Universe portal. Methods: VOU-Blazars implements a heuristic approach based on the well known SED that differentiate blazars from other astronomical sources. The VOU-Blazars outputs are flux tables, bibliographic references, sky plots and SEDs. Results: This paper describes the working mechanism of the tool, gives details of the catalogues and on-line services that are used to produce the output, and gives some examples of usage. VOU-Blazars has been extensively tested during the selection of new high-energy peaked (HSP) blazars recently published in the 3HSP catalog, and has been used to search for blazar counterparts of Fermi 3FHL, Fermi 4FGL, AGILE γ -ray sources, and of IceCube astrophysical neutrinos.

One of the most exciting discoveries of recent years is a pair of gigantic gamma-ray emission regions, the so-called Fermi bubbles, above and below the Galactic center. The bubbles, discovered by the Fermi space telescope, extend up to $\sim 50^\circ$ in Galactic latitude and are $\sim 40^\circ$ wide in Galactic longitude. The gamma-ray emission is also found to correlate with radio, microwave and X-rays emission. The origin of the bubbles and the associated non-thermal emissions are still not clearly understood. Possible explanations for the non-thermal emission include cosmic-ray injection from the Galactic center by high speed Galactic winds/jets, acceleration by multiple shocks or plasma turbulence present inside the bubbles, and acceleration by strong shock waves associated with the expansion of the bubbles. In this paper, I will discuss the possibility that the gamma-ray emission is produced by the injection of Galactic cosmic-rays mainly protons during their diffusive propagation through the Galaxy. The role pulsar wind nebulae play in producing our locally observed cosmic ray spectrum remains murky, yet intriguing. Pulsar wind nebulae are born and evolve in conjunction with SNRs, which are favored sites of Galactic cosmic ray acceleration. As a result they frequently complicate interpretation of the gamma-ray emission seen from SNRs. However, pulsar wind nebulae may also contribute directly to the local cosmic ray spectrum, particularly the leptonic component. This paper reviews the current thinking on pulsar wind nebulae and their connection to cosmic ray production from an observational perspective. It also considers how both future technologies and new ways of analyzing existing data can help us to better address the relevant theoretical questions. PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 is a very high energy (VHE; $E > 100$ GeV) {\gamma}-ray emitting binary consisting of a 48 ms pulsar orbiting around a Be star with a period of $\sim3.4$ years. The Be star features a circumstellar disk which is inclined with respect to the orbit in such a way that the pulsar crosses it twice every orbit. The circumstellar disk provides an additional field of target photons which may contribute to inverse Compton scattering and {\gamma}{\gamma}-absorption, leaving a characteristic imprint in the observed spectrum of the high energy emission. At GeV energies, the source was detected for the first time during the previous periastron passage which took place on December 15, 2010. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) reported a spectacular and unexpected {\gamma}-ray flare occurring around 30 days after periastron and lasting for about 7 weeks. In this paper, we study the signatures of Compton-supported, VHE {\gamma}-ray induced pair cascades in the circumstellar disc of the Be star and their possible contribution to the GeV flux. We show that cascade emission generated in the disk cannot be responsible for the GeV flare, but it might explain the GeV emission observed close to periastron. This paper summarizes the status and the recent measurements from the Pierre Auger Observatory. The energy spectrum is described and its features discussed. We report searches for anisotropy of cosmic ray arrival directions on large scales and through correlation with catalogues of celestial objects. We also present the search for anisotropies in the data without the use of astronomical catalogues. The first measurement of the proton-air cross section around 10^{18} eV is discussed. Because the production cross sections of gamma-rays, electrons, and positrons made in p-p collisions, $\sigma_{pp\rightarrow \gamma}$ and $\sigma_{pp\rightarrow {e}^\pm}$, respectively, are kinematically equivalent with respect to the parent pion-production cross section $\sigma_{pp\rightarrow \pi}$, we obtain $\sigma_{pp\rightarrow {e}^\pm}$ directly from the machine data on $\sigma_{pp\rightarrow \gamma}$. In Sato et al. (2012), we give explicitly $\sigma_{pp\rightarrow \gamma}$, reproducing quite well the accelerator data with LHC, namely $\sigma_{pp\rightarrow {e}^\pm}$ is applicable enough over the wide energy range from GeV to 20\,PeV for projectile proton energy. In this manuscript we present a new approach for the numerical solution of the Galactic Cosmic Ray propagation problem. We introduce a method using advanced contemporary numerical algorithms while retaining the general complexity of other established codes. In this paper we present the underlying numerical scheme in conjunction with tests showing the correctness of the scheme. Finally we show the solution of a first example propagation problem using the new code to show its applicability to Galactic Cosmic Ray propagation.

The possibility of detecting Ultra-high energy (UHE from now on) neutrinos due to superheavy dark matter are considered by the neutrinos interaction with the nuclei in the air in the present paper. To reject other standard model particles, UHE neutrinos, from superheavy dark matter and astrophysical sources, skimming the Earth are detected at JEM-EUSO. Then the numbers of UHE neutrinos detected by JEM-EUSO are evaluated at different energies (1 EeV < E < 1 ZeV) in 5 years. If the energy thresholds are taken to be 100 EeV, the astrophysical neutrino contamination could be negligible in this detection. It is possible that UHE neutrinos from the decay of superheavy dark matter are detected at JEM-EUSO when $O(10^{27})s < ��_��< O(10^{31})s$. For example, O($10^4$) UHE neutrino events could be detected by JEM-EUSO at 30 EeV in 5 years when $��_��=O(10^{27})$s. Recently, the nine-year data release of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP9) found that the inflationary models with the scalar spectral index n_s \geq 1 are excluded at about 5\sigma confidence level. In this paper, we set the new limits on the scalar spectral index in different cosmological models combining the WMAP9 data with the small-scale cosmic microwave background measurement from the South Pole Telescope, baryon acoustic oscillation data, Hubble Telescope measurements of the Hubble constant, and supernovae luminosity distance data. In most of extended cosmological models, e.g. with a dark energy equation of state, the constraints on n_s do not change significantly. The Harrison-Zel'dovich-Peebles (HZ) scale invariant spectrum is still disfavored at more than 4\sigma confidence level. However, when considering the model with a number of relativistic species N_{eff}, we obtain the limit on the spectral index of n_s=0.980\pm0.011 (1\sigma), due to the strong degeneracy between n_s and N_{eff}. The Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) intensity has been postulated by others to vary cyclically with a peak to valley ratio of ~3:1, as the Solar System moves from the Spiral Arm to the Inter-Arm regions of the Galaxy. These intensities have been correlated with global temperatures and used to support the hypothesis of GCR induced climate change. In this paper we show that the model used to deduce such a large ratio of Arm to Interarm GCR intensity requires unlikely values of some of the GCR parameters, particularly the diffusion length in the interstellar medium, if as seems likely to be the case, the diffusion is homogeneous. Comparison is made with the existing gamma ray astronomy data and this also indicates that the ratio is not large. The variation in the intensity is probably of order 10-20% and should be no more than 30% as the Solar System moves between these two regions, unless the conventional parameters of the GCR are incorrect. In addition we show that the variation of the GCR intensity, as the trajectory of the Solar System oscillates about the Galactic Plane, is too small to account for the extinctions of species as has been postulated unless, again, conventional assumptions about the GCR parameters are not correct., Tex file only
