Abstract

The Raman scattering of Cisplatin (the first generation of anticancer drugs) has been studied. In the presence of silver nanoparticles, strong modifications of Raman spectra have been observed. The Raman frequencies have been shifted and the line profiles are broadened. We develop a theoretical model to explain the observed features of the Raman scattering. The model takes into account self-consistently the interaction of molecules with surface plasmonic waves excited in the silver nanoparticles, and it provides a qualitative agreement with the observed Raman spectra. We have demonstrated that the using silver nanoparticles can increase sensitivity of the technique, and potentially it has a broader range of applications to both spectroscopy and microscopy.

Abstract

We consider the motion of a quantum particle in a free space. Introducing an explicit measurement procedure for velocity, we demonstrate that the measured velocity is related to the group and phase velocities of the corresponding matter waves. We show that for long distances the measured velocity coincides with the matter wave group velocity. We discuss the possibilities to demonstrate these effects for the optical pulses in coherently driven media or for radiation propagating in waveguides.

Abstract

We investigate cooperative emission from a rubidium vapor, and demonstrate a controlled transition from yoked superfluorescence to three-photon-induced superradiance by driving the medium with co-propagating ultrashort laser pulses. We study temporal emission profiles and time delays on a picosecond time scale and compare the measured pulse shapes with simulations. Our results suggest strategies to improve efficiency of mirrorless lasers and superradiant light sources.

Abstract

Qualitative model for hadroproduction in high energy collisions considering two components ("thermal" and "hard") to hadroproduction is proposed. Inclusive pseudorapidity distributions, $d\sigma/d\eta$, and transverse momentum spectra, $d^2\sigma/(d\eta dp_T^2)$, measured by different collaborations are considered in terms of this model. The shapes of the pseudorapidity distributions agree with that one can expect from the qualitative picture introduced. Finally, the differences between charged particle spectra produced in inclusive and diffractive events are discussed and the absence of the "thermal" component in the latter is observed., Comment: More data on diffractive events has been considered, two plots added, new conclusions are made

Abstract

Magnetic monopoles are predicted in various unified gauge models and could be produced at intermediate mass scales. Their detection in a neutrino telescope is facilitated by the large amount of light emitted compared to that from muons. This paper reports on a search for upgoing relativistic magnetic monopoles with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using a data set of 116 days of live time taken from December 2007 to December 2008. Abstract

The spectra shape of produced charged hadrons on the size of a colliding system is discussed using a two component model. The hierarchy by the system-size in the spectra shape is observed. Next, the hydrodynamic extension of the model is suggested to describe the spectra of charged particles produced in heavy-ion collisions in the full range of transverse momenta, p T . Data from heavy-ion collisions measured at RHIC and LHC are analyzed and combined in terms of energy density.The observed regularities might be explained by the formation of QGP during the collision.

Inclusive charged hadron cross sections, d σ / d η , and d 2 σ / ( d η d p T 2 ) are considered within the two component model, which combines the power-like and the exponential terms in p T . The observed dependences of the spectra shape on energy and pseudorapidity qualitatively agree with the proposed model for hadroproduction. A short overview of the results published recently is presented.

Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is a large photomultiplier array designed to detect neutrino-induced upward-going muons by their Cherenkov radiation. Understanding the absorption and scattering of light in the deep Mediterranean is fundamental to optimising the design and performance of the detector. This paper presents measurements of blue and UV light transmission at the ANTARES site taken between 1997 and 2000. The derived values for the scattering length and the angular distribution of particulate scattering were found to be highly correlated, and results are therefore presented in terms of an absorption length lambda_abs and an effective scattering length lambda_sct^eff. The values for blue (UV) light are found to be lambda_abs ~ 60(26) m, lambda_sct^eff ~ 265(122) m, with significant (15%) time variability. Finally, the results of ANTARES simulations showing the effect of these water properties on the anticipated performance of the detector are presented., Comment: 40 pages, 23 figures (including 4 available as separate figures), to be published in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

The inclusive production of D*(+/-)(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic e(+/-)p scattering is measured in the kinematic region of photon virtuality 100 1 5 GeV The data were collected by the H1 experiment during the period from 2004 to 2007 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 351 pb(-1) The charm contribution. Abstract

A measurement of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering gamma*p --> gamma p using e(+) p and e(-) p collision data recorded with the HI detector at HERA is presented. The analysed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 306 pb(-1), almost equally shared between both beam charges. The cross section is measured as a function of the virtuality Q(2) of the exchanged photon and the centre-of-mass energy W of the gamma*p system in the kinematic domain 6.5 < Q(2) < 80 GeV2, 30 < W < 140 GeV and |t| < 1 GeV2, where t denotes the squared momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The cross section is determined differentially in t for different Q(2) and W values and exponential t-slope parameters are derived. Using e(+) p and e(-) p data samples, a beam charge asymmetry is extracted for the first time in the low Biorken x kinematic domain. The observed asymmetry is attributed to the interference between Bethe-Heitler and deeply virtual Compton scattering processes. Experimental results are discussed in the context of two different models, one based on generalised parton distributions and one based on the dipole approach. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Inclusive non-diffractive photoproduction of rho(770)(0), K*(892)(0) and phi(1020) mesons is investigated with the H1 detector in ep collisions at HERA. The corresponding average gamma p centre-of-mass energy is 210 GeV. The mesons are measured in the transverse momentum range 0.5 < p(T) < 7 GeV and the rapidity range vertical bar y(lab)vertical bar < 1. Abstract

The first measurement of diffractive scattering of quasi-real photons with large momentum transfer γ p → γ Y, where Y is the proton dissociative system, is made using the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is performed for initial photon virtualities Q 2 < 0.01 GeV 2. Abstract

We have studied the intensity correlations between two orthogonally linearly polarized components of a laser field propagating through a resonant atomic medium. These experiments have been performed in a rubidium atomic vapor. We observe that the correlations between the orthogonally polarized components of the laser beam are maximal in the absence of a magnetic field. The magnitude of the correlations depends on the applied magnetic field, and the magnitude first decreases and then increases with increasing magnetic field. Minimal correlations and maximal rotation angles are observed at the same magnetic fields. The width of the correlation function is directly proportional to the excited state lifetime and inversely proportional to the Rabi frequency of laser field.

It is based on inclusive deep inelastic e(+)p scattering cross section measurements with a positron beam energy of 27.5 GeV and proton beam energies of 920, 575 and 460 GeV. Abstract

A FORTRAN 77 program is presented which calculates with the relative machine precision potential curves and matrix elements of the coupled adiabatic radial equations for a hydrogen-like atom in a homogeneous magnetic field. The potential curves are eigenvalues corresponding to the angular oblate spheroidal functions that compose adiabatic basis which depends on the radial variable as a parameter. The matrix elements of radial coupling are integrals in angular variables of the following two types: product of angular functions and the first derivative of angular functions in parameter, and product of the first derivatives of angular functions in parameter, respectively. The program calculates also the angular part of the dipole transition matrix elements (in the length form) expressed as integrals in angular variables involving product of a dipole operator and angular functions. Moreover, the program calculates asymptotic regular and irregular matrix solutions of the coupled adiabatic radial equations at the end of interval in radial variable needed for solving a multi-channel scattering problem by the generalized R-matrix method. Potential curves and radial matrix elements computed by the POTHMF program can be used for solving the bound state and multi-channel scattering problems. As a test desk, the program is applied to the calculation of the energy values, a short-range reaction matrix and corresponding wave functions with the help of the KANTBP program. Benchmark calculations for the known photoionization cross-sections are presented.

Abstract

We have theoretically studied the effects of quantum coherence in a driven quasi-degenerate two-level atomic system. We have shown that the quantum interference, which can be destructive or constructive, can be controlled by an externally applied magnetic field allowing one to implement both electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption in the same atomic system. Determined by frequency dispersion of the index of refraction of the system, the group velocity of light pulses ranges from ultra-slow to superluminal with changing of the magnitude of the magnetic field.

Abstract

Inclusive jet production is studied in neutral current deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at large four momentum transfer squared Q^2>150 GeV^2 with the H1 detector at HERA. Single and double differential inclusive jet cross sections are measured as a function of Q^2 and of the transverse energy E_T of the jets in the Breit frame. The measurements are found to be well described by calculations at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The running of the strong coupling is demonstrated and the value of alpha_s(M_Z) is determined. The ratio of the inclusive jet cross section to the inclusive neutral current cross section is also measured and used to extract a precise value for alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1193+/-0.0014(exp.)^{+0.0047}_{-0.0030}(th.)+/-0.0016(pdf).

Abstract

A search for a narrow baryonic resonance decaying to K(s)(0)p or K-s(0)(p) over bar is carried out in deep inelastic ep scattering with the H1 detector at HERA. ss Such a resonance could be a strange pentaquark Theta(+), evidence for which has been reported by several experiments. The K(s)(0)p and K-s(0)(p) over bar invariant ss mass distributions presented here do not show any significant peak in the mass range from threshold up to 1.7 GeV. Mass dependent upper limits on sigma(ep -> e Theta X+) x BR(Theta(+) -> K(0)p) are obtained at the 95% confidence level.

We have determined the absorption coefficients of the IR-active vibrational modes in solid dipicolinic acid (DPA) at 300 K and observed, for the first time, the DPA absorption lines corresponding to vibrational overtones. Applications of obtained results to coherent Raman spectroscopy are discussed.

Abstract

Szilard [L. Szilard, Zeitschrift fur Physik, 53 (1929) 840] made a decisive step toward solving the Maxwell demon problem by introducing and analyzing the single atom heat engine. Bennett [Sci. Am. 255 (1987) 107] completed the solution by pointing out that there must be an entropy, Δ S = k ln 2 , generated as the result of information erased on each cycle. Nevertheless, others have disagreed. For example, philosophers such as Popper “have found the literature surrounding Maxwell's demon deeply problematic.” We propose and analyze a new kind of single atom quantum heat engine which allows us to resolve the Maxwell demon paradox simply, and without invoking the notions of information or entropy. The energy source of the present quantum engine [Scully, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 22601] is a Stern–Gerlach apparatus acting as a demonesque heat sorter. An isothermal compressor acts as the entropy sink. In order to complete a thermodynamic cycle, an energy of Δ W = kT ln 2 must be expended. This energy is essentially a “reset” or “eraser” energy. Thus Bennett's entropy Δ S = Δ W / T emerges as a simple consequence of the quantum thermodynamics of our heat engine. It would seem that quantum mechanics contains the kernel of information entropy at its very core. That is the concept of information erasure as it appears in quantum mechanics [Scully and Druhl, Phys. Rev. A 25 (1982) 2208] and the present quantum heat engine have a deep common origin.

Abstract

We present a negentropy quantum heat engine [M.O. Scully, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 220601] which uses a Stern–Gerlach apparatus as a quantum sorter and a pair of Raman pulses in order to adiabatically transfer population from one hyperfine ground sublevel to another. Work is produced in a microwave cavity by exploiting the energy of an atom's internal degrees of freedom. Such a scheme may be possible to implement under realistic experimental conditions.

Abstract

We present an analytical calculation to determine the atomic injection time effects on lasing without inversion (LWI) in a three level lambda system with its ground state driven by an arbitrarily strong classical microwave field. We systematically take into account subtle effects associated with the injection times. We derive an expression for the optical coherences and show that one gets amplification of the field without population inversion which is governed by a temporal phase, in addition to the initial (random) phases of the ground state coherence.

Abstract

A search for gravitinos produced in e±p collisions is performed using the H1 detector at HERA. The data were taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 64.3 pb -1 for e+p collisions and 13.5 pb-1 for e -p collisions. If R-parity is not conserved, the t-channel exchange of a selectron can produce a neutralino, which, in models where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle, subsequently decays into a photon and a light gravitino. The resulting event signature, which involves an isolated photon, a jet and missing transverse energy, is analysed for the first time at HERA. No deviation from the Standard Model is found. Exclusion limits on the cross section and on R-parity-violating Yukawa couplings are derived in a Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking scenario. The results are independent of the squark sector. Neutralinos and supersymmetric partners of the left-handed electron with masses up to 112 GeV and 164 GeV, respectively, can be ruled out at the 95% confidence level for R-parity-violating couplings λ′ equal to 1, in some parts of the parameter space of the considered model. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Maximizing the molecular response to coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) requires optimizing the preparation of a vibrational quantum coherence. We simulate the amount of laser-induced coherence prepared in a three-level system modeled after dipicolinic acid (DPA), a marker molecule for bacterial spores. The level spacings and decoherence times were chosen to agree with experimental data observed from DPA. Nearly-maximal vibrational coherences can be induced for 150 fs optical pulses, despite the very fast dephasing rates of the electronic transitions. It is also shown that pulse propagation effects play an important role in the development of coherence throughout an extended sample, due to nonlinear index effects of the molecule at the laser frequencies.

Abstract

A search for scalar top quarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry is performed in e(+)p collisions at HERA using the H1 detector. The data, taken at roots = 319 GeV and 301 GeV, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 106 pb(-1). The resonant production of scalar top quarks t in positron quark fusion via an R-parity violating Yukawa coupling lambda' is considered with the subsequent bosonic stop decay t --> BW. The R-parity violating decay of the sbottom quark b --> dv(e) and leptonic and hadronic W decays are considered. No evidence for stop production is found in the search for bosonic stop decays nor in a search for the direct R-parity violating decay t --> eq. Mass dependent limits on lambda' are obtained in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. Stop quarks with masses up to 275 GeV can be excluded at the 95% confidence level for a Yukawa coupling of electromagnetic strength. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The proton structure function F-2(x, Q(2)) is measured in inelastic QED Compton scattering using data collected with the H1 detector at HERA. QED Compton events are used to access the kinematic range of very low virtualities of the exchanged photon, Q(2), down to 0.5 GeV2, and Bjorken x up to similar to 0.06, a region which has not been covered previously by inclusive measurements at HERA. The results are in agreement with the measurements from fixed target lepton-nucleon scattering experiments. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Cross sections for the production of two isolated muons up to high di-muon masses are measured in ep collisions at HERA with the H1 detector in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 71 pb-1 at a centre of mass energy of √s=319 GeV. The results are in good agreement with Standard Model predictions, the dominant process being photon-photon interactions. Additional muons or electrons are searched for in events with two high transverse momentum muons using the full data sample corresponding to 114 pb-1, where data at √s=301 GeV and √s=319 GeV are combined. Abstract

Deep-inelastic e^\pm p scattering at high squared momentum transfer Q^2 up to 30000 GeV^2 is used to search for eq contact interactions associated to scales far beyond the HERA centre of mass energy. The neutral current cross section measurements d sigma / d Q^2, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 16.4 pb^-1 of e^- p data and 100.8 pb^-1 of e^+ p data, are well described by the Standard Model and are analysed to set constraints on new phenomena. For conventional contact interactions lower limits are set on compositeness scales Lambda ranging between 1.6 - 5.5 TeV. Couplings and masses of leptoquarks and squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry are constrained to M / lambda > 0.3 - 1.4 TeV. A search for low scale quantum gravity effects in models with large extra dimensions provides limits on the effective Planck scale of M_S > 0.8 TeV. A form factor analysis yields a bound on the radius of light quarks of R_q < 1.0 x 10^-18 m., 15 pages, 5 figures and 5 tables

Abstract

We have shown that quantum interference in a driven quasi-degenerate two-level atomic system can be controlled by an externally applied magnetic field. We demonstrate that the mechanism of optical control is based on quantum interference, which allows one to implement both electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in one atomic system. The experimental realization is suggested.

Abstract

We introduce the scattering problem in the case of one-dimensional space. The transmission factor is calculated for the whole domain of the potential energy. Connection with a field in interaction with a two-level quantum system is established for which the coupling parameter is considered to be explicitly time-dependent.
